Ep 213: New OV-10, Rock Crawlers, Fly-In Recap, and Our RC-Ready Rigs

[00:00:08] Hello everyone, welcome to the RC Plane Lab podcast. I’m Ron, I’m Tom and I’m dave. Tom is with us from afar, so there might be some delays or something. We’ll see how this goes. Yeah, we will make it work. Give the old college a try. What’s new?

[00:00:30] Well that’s on my end it’s been hot like too hot to fly we have had nice weather here.

[00:00:40] And then storms, and then next week we’re getting your weather excellent. Yeah, with humidity we’re supposed to be. I think the actual temperature is supposed to be mid 90s and I think, with the humidity, whatever they call that, it’s supposed to be up to like.

[00:00:56] 115 Is what I’ve said. Oh man, ouch. Yeah, all right, yeah, that’s going to be miserable. It is shop time. Inside weather, inside weather, yeah, for sure, it was 105 today here, that’s, but it’s a dry heat, but I don’t. Yeah, yeah, sure. And then it rained.

[00:01:21] That sucks. I definitely don’t want to deal with that heat like that just doesn’t sound fun, it’s not. But what’s funny is you do actually acclimate, like I’ve been trying to like spend more time outside to try to acclimate, and you actually do like. When the temperature drops into like the 90s in the evening, especially when the sun is not beating down on you directly, it actually feels kind of pleasant. And I know 90 plus degrees should not feel pleasant, but it does.

[00:01:52] Well, don’t get too used to it, because you’re going to hate coming here. Why is that no like in my house? Oh yeah, if you get so used to the 90 degree temperature because it’s a balmy 64 in here right now, I think, oh my gosh, yeah, it kind of feels nice.

[00:02:12] It’s funny. I have the thermostat, I programmed it and I’ve been slowly, a little bit at a time, a degree at a time, just like ramping it up to try to acclimate, like you’re boiling frogs. Yeah, exactly, and like right now it’s set at 76. Oh, that’s 77 all the time. Well, you guys are older too, so and I’m cold. Actually, I could, I could actually have a blanket right now I’m. I’m actually kind of chilly sitting here at the table, oh my.

[00:02:41] Goodness, you guys are weird. Right, I’m weird. I don’t care. Well, somebody is. I do enjoy soaking up Ron’s air conditioning when I am here. See, whenever time is here, you guys have a blanket, but I do it’s.

[00:02:56] Okay, it’s true I was gonna say I forgot we talked about a couple things before we got started. I forgot one of the things I did a couple weeks ago. We went camping and I actually it wasn’t rc plane related, but I took my rock crawlers and place we went was actually perfect for those. I’ve never been to a camping place to where there was like no grass, it was all rock. It was weird and it was very hilly and there were some very good spots for running the rock crawlers. So I

[00:03:32] Had a lot of fun with them where’d you go last aren’t they yeah we went to.

[00:03:38] What’s the? That was the jelly stone camp place by, or in eureka, missouri, the one that’s right by six flags down by? Yeah, oh, my goodness it was, and they don’t let you bring your own golf cart. So it was a hundred and one hundred and sixty five dollars, I think, for two days for a golf cart. What a that’s dumb. But anyway, just hope. Yeah, well, I mean, we like to take mom out and take her on the car, right? Yeah, so, but no, like I said, it was perfect for that down there, and I actually think I got my

[00:04:13] Brother-in-law, kind of. Really. He was asking more about like after we did the first time. Then I kept hearing: hey, you want to go get those out and find other places. So nice, he’s talking about wanting to find some, so I think that’ll be fun. Yeah, that’s how you get them hooked. I know right. Yeah, now you need to get hooked on airplanes. He’s been asking. So I think we just need to make a trip out there sometime when everything calms down with everything else going on. But, yeah, take the aero scout and let him fly it. Yeah, he’ll have no problem with it. I don’t think, although

[00:04:48] He was. He might now that I think about it because he was. He was commenting on how, every now and then, when he was driving to him with the rock crawlers, he would get it backwards on the on the steering.

[00:04:59] Yeah just let him drive around a while exactly I mean that’s what he did he went through a couple.

[00:05:03] Batteries and stuff on it and, yeah, it worked out well, that’s. The best way to learn is just to mess around, especially with car like that, to where it’s not fast, so you’re not worried about crashing.

[00:05:13] In anything and if it rolls so what yeah cool hopefully another pilot in the in the group.

[00:05:22] Soon I bet we’d be able to get him especially once he retires yeah I think he would be a good.

[00:05:30] One for them anyway, and then, and then you could talk him into building an airfield out there at his place he’s already offered oh. So haven’t you done it yet, because it’s a farther drive out there than.

[00:05:44] It is to the field, yeah, but it’s almost as long free, well, I mean it’s almost as long, no, because then you have to upkeep on it. It’s almost as long for me to get to his house- or not his house, but the farm from our house- than it is to get to eli. Oh so, yeah, but not for me, and that’s all that matters. Oh so you guys see, e-flight came out with a new airplane today. Yeah, it looks pretty cool.

[00:06:17] Yeah about the probably about the only way I’m going to be able to afford to jump into an ov10.

[00:06:22] I know I was thinking the same thing like this is still expensive but I can handle this one.

[00:06:27] Right exactly it does look cool it looks like it flies really nice yeah it does from everything.

[00:06:32] We’ve seen, of course, really nice details on. It looks really good, and what dave likes is clear canopy, and pilots and pilots, pilots, do it for me. If you have a clear canopy, you have to have.

[00:06:46] Pilots: yeah, an empty canopy just doesn’t get it. And it’s two pilots. Yeah, they do that a lot. They short tandem canopies. They put one pilot in it. They have the t-28s, that f-18 I gotta do. It’s not theirs, but it’s got a hole in everything in the canopy for the second pilot. Yeah, no pilot, I know I.

[00:07:08] Know, I know, I know, but it’s a, if you haven’t seen it yet, 645 millimeter wingspan, which I don’t know why they don’t tell us in inches. But it ends up being- what did I say? Like 25 ish, a little over 25 inch, yeah.

[00:07:22] That’s a twin brushless motors. Yeah, it is actually. It’s it. It’s and it’s a bigger airplane. Like, looking at it, like because of the tail booms and stuff, it’s a physically like the presence is bigger than like the turbo timber revolution and that kind of stuff, even though they’re roughly the same wingspan, so it looks like a bigger plane when you see the picture of somebody holding it has leds, has the detail, the scale, stuff on it, the gear is removable. I mean, yeah, whatever, but

[00:07:55] I would like, I would like to see it land with the gear off. That’s one thing they don’t show you in the videos because I mean, are they magnetized? Are they because it’s gonna tear off? Oh yeah, I would think, especially because the mom’s hanging so low and stuff. Yeah, with grass and all that. But it comes with pretty much everything you need to fly and it is what, was it? 219 Dollars?

[00:08:26] Well 220 dollars what battery does it or batteries I can’t I don’t remember looking 3s 600 to 3s 850.

[00:08:34] So I already have four yeah it’s the same battery that the umx viper uses right no her viper is.

[00:08:44] 4S 450- yeah, that’s right, okay- of which I have nothing else that uses those batteries. So it would have been cool if they would have. Maybe they’ll come out with something else that I use those. Sorry, it’s okay. Internet lag, yeah, yeah, we’ll see. So what else do you have that uses the batteries that the ov10 uses? So I have the umx a10 uses the same one. Oh, that’s right, okay. And then when I had it, the erratics, the flat foamy one, the full-size one, flew on that, so cool. So you already.

[00:09:26] Got batteries did you get it backward or pre-ordered yet I haven’t I thought about it but.

[00:09:31] I haven’t yet maybe we’ll make a trip up to brian’s once it’s released and pick up some because we.

[00:09:37] Haven’t seen him for a long time yeah you should go check in and say hello tell him I said hi.

[00:09:42] Yeah, I will just drag your computer up and yeah, we’ll just take the computer up and maybe put you on a, I don’t know, maybe I’ll put you on my shoulders or something, and it looks like you’re. I’ll just put you in front of my face. How’s that? There you go. There you go. Perfect, that’d be an.

[00:09:58] Improvement which thank you that’s a good thing he’s a few hundred miles away I know right gosh.

[00:10:06] Click. So next thing, we went to our local clubs flying last weekend a little open house, yeah, dave and I went with daniel and I watched pictures, made it onto facebook and I was looking.

[00:10:24] At the pictures look like look like it was a pretty good turnout yeah it was pretty busy I think.

[00:10:30] I saw 45 registered pilots. I thought I saw 39, but that’s still pretty good. Yeah, for our little club that’s pretty good. Yeah, but that’s about all. I mean, like I said, I didn’t bring anything to fly. I.

[00:10:44] Didn’t do anything so I’m trying to get him to bring stuff but no oh I was that’s what it was that was.

[00:10:49] The weekend we went camping. We had just gotten home. Was it too windy? No, it’s not. No, that was a weekend before I think I don’t know what it was- we did something. I know you said you had house projects. I was working on that too, but I’m talking about like the days leading up to it. I felt like I was doing.

[00:11:05] Something that prevented me. Anyway, it doesn’t matter. I mean really, it’s just excuses: 70 millimeter viper in there and flown that probably could have. Yeah, yeah, thanks for making me feel bad. That’s what I do.

[00:11:19] I know, I know my self-esteem has gone up so much since you’ve been gone. I gotta get home and beat that back down. But anyway, dave, tell me all about what you flew and what you did.

[00:11:33] Oh I forgot what I took.

[00:11:37] He didn’t see this coming like we yeah.

[00:11:39] He didn’t know. You’re recording or didn’t know. I just completely forgot about the inventory of what I took, took an assortment of things. I know I took the piaget. Yeah, what else did I take? I took stuff.

[00:11:55] God I remember daniel had the big horn and that’s all I can remember so I took.

[00:12:06] The twin triangle shape thing gosh I’ve had a stroke oh the mctwist I took the mctwist yeah this is stupid.

[00:12:22] What oh you took the oh what was the one you got from terry oh the xb-70 xb-70.

[00:12:28] Which I’m really loving that thing I thank you so much for terry giving that to me I.

[00:12:32] Now that I’ve converted over to three cell. I love flying. I was just getting ready to ask you what you did to make it flyable, because the last time I saw that thing attempt to fly, it wasn’t so much, it was also 104 degrees, so that we have to do it was a little off. But three cells, it is a completely different animal. Yeah, it flies like 15- 16 miles an hour full throttle.

[00:12:56] It is, it’s quick. Oh my god, don’t blink. And then the first time he tried to land, he kept coming in. Now there was a crosswind on the runway.

[00:13:10] And he kept coming in. It just kept getting closer to us and closer to us and closer to us and he’s like: I forget, I keep trying to use the rudder but there is none. Yeah, there’s no rudder, and I think he landed like three and a half feet in front of us. Yeah, perfect. Yeah, I mean it worked out fine, but I took a step back. Honestly, it weighs an entire 20 grand, flies and walk 10 mile an hour. I don’t run, so I was swiftly walking or shuffling out of the way. I guess there you go.

[00:13:41] Yeah there you go.

[00:13:43] So I had a lot of fun, yeah really met up with a bunch of guys that I haven’t seen as a group for a while.

[00:13:49] Yeah, and dave doesn’t introduce people, by the way, like I was standing there with daniel’s day, was talking to all these people because everybody knows, dave, I mean like you can’t go somewhere and everybody’s like, hey, dave, oh, I haven’t seen you, whatever. And so we were walking up to go sign in as pilots and then he gets sidetracked talking to people. So daniel and I are just kind of standing there and I was asking daniel like who, who are those people that he’s talking to? He’s like, oh, I have no idea. And so dave’s just standing there talking and it’s like

[00:14:20] Oh hi we’re we’re just standing back here chopped liver I guess but that’s okay dave’s entourage.

[00:14:28] You would know these hair on.

[00:14:30] I like entourage better.

[00:14:36] I don’t know. I like it anyway. I used to have one of those. Anyway, you would probably recognize a bunch of these guys from the christian county prop busters. Did you ever fly with them? Much, Tom? Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. So. So bill actually was one that I’ve met the rest of the crew. From time to time, here and there I’ve ran across them, but I hadn’t seen bill for a really long time and I was thinking about him the other day. It’s like man, I haven’t seen bill for a long time.

[00:15:12] Come to find out he had moved out of the area and moved down to georgia. Oh really, yep. And then recently has moved back from georgia and he was talking to a friend of his on the phone and he just who happens to be a listener, and he was talking. I was like I’m right here with dave from the podcast and so we want to throw a real quick shout out to chris lowe from the cub county rc down in atlanta, georgia.

[00:15:56] Yeah, it does, I did. I don’t disagree with that statement, but anyway, yeah, when I learned to fly I was with the prop busters club.

[00:16:04] Yeah, so those guys are. The club is no longer around, but the guys are still hanging out and it was really good to see everybody together for a change.

[00:16:11] So where would that where that club have been then.

[00:16:16] Oh where’s the christian guy yeah.

[00:16:18] Yeah that’s they had a couple different places yeah we used to fly at the junior high and then.

[00:16:24] Can you back off the mic a little bit tommy you’re sure a little yeah better much better.

[00:16:29] So we used to fly at the junior high school.

[00:16:31] I like maybe just a little bit closer. I’m sorry because now it’s hard to hear, but you were if. If you see on your screen when you’re talking, you can see how the speech things are full. That’s when it’s clipping and that’s when it sounds bad.

[00:16:54] So it doesn’t pick that part up sorry.

[00:16:57] That’s right. So at any rate we used to fly at the junior high school there in taylorville- okay, taylorville is where, that is okay, yeah. And then, and then we had a field textile runway out by buckeye church which is kind of it’s been so long, I wouldn’t even I think it’s south of town- and then for a few years we used to fly at harold’s place, but I think harold passed away a few years ago, so at one point they were out at the airport.

[00:17:27] Or the county fairgrounds I can’t remember which it was well they did both.

[00:17:32] We flew to both places. Yeah, I don’t know, we seemed to move around a lot. Yeah, the prong busters always had a floating field. Yeah, until they moved out to buckeye church and then they were out there for a number of years before they, before they started flying out of harold’s place.

[00:17:50] And so how long ago would this have been then that you guys were doing that and that they disbanded.

[00:17:56] I don’t know when they disbanded, but I mean, I flew, I flew with the prop busters until I went to college, which would have been, oh gosh, 1989, I guess.

[00:18:08] I was flying with them in the early 2000s oh sorry.

[00:18:11] 89, Not 99. Oh okay, and then, yeah, I don’t I. After I went to college, I flew in college and then when I got back we moved to springfield and joined the club up here. So, or up in springfield.

[00:18:26] So that would have been a while ago.

[00:18:28] Yeah.

[00:18:29] So I gotcha really nice weekend though we were there way longer I expected.

[00:18:36] Yeah I, I jumped out of there right around noon and ended up talking to daniel after that and he’s like, no, we left at like 5: 30. I was like, oh my gosh, it was a long day.

[00:18:47] That’s a good thing.

[00:18:47] It was a decent day though.

[00:18:49] Yeah.

[00:18:50] Decent weather not too hot not too cold.

[00:18:54] Yeah.

[00:18:57] Was it windy at all.

[00:18:59] A little bit of cross breeze from time to time. We were actually trying to sort out daniel’s paramotor and it was a little too breezy for that, but everything else was fine, yeah.

[00:19:10] And I think you said on the last episode it’s beans this year.

[00:19:14] Beans this year yes that’s wonderful which means it’ll probably be corn next year.

[00:19:19] Oh definitely for the next two years it’ll be corn yeah probably.

Yeah, no, I don’t think I’ve seen it. It’s blue. It’s blue and white with some yellow on it. Oh, I bet it does look good. It does actually has a bigger wing than I remember, like I still. I think we talked about before, but he like pulled out and he handed me the wing. He’s like remember this one? I’m like no,

[00:21:05] Yes, well, when I yeah, that was the one I bought for okay at toledo and took down to joan all the first year for floats.

[00:21:14] Yeah so he has the floats for him he’s looking for a picture not that it’s going to do anybody else any good.

The xb70, that’s four, that’s four. I think it was a total six, if I remember right. Tell me out here on what else was there?

[00:22:23] Okay, did you bring your slow ultra stick? Oh yes, yes, I did have my slow ultra stick. I know, daniel. That’s five, one more, there’s one more. You can do it, dave. I’m trying to think how they’re laid out in the truck. That’s a good way to do it. Yeah.

[00:23:18] I hand launched for him and he excellent.

[00:23:22] Yes and you hand launched somebody else’s plane it brought up my successful hand launch percentage to 50 percent.

[00:23:31] And he threw the radjet and he threw the xb70.

[00:23:35] No I didn’t I didn’t do the radjet.

[00:23:38] You didn’t throw the radjet.

[00:23:39] No, I did the xb70, but I think I threw that too hard because it’s like xb70, like it was a job. It slowed down after you let go of it. Well, it did actually. You could hear the motor like over spin as I threw it. And then no, the other one I hand launched was that piaget or whatever it was, oh, the piaget, and that was where I just held it and just let go. But that still counts as a success. I’m watching the xb70. Yes.

[00:24:08] So that’s funny well that took long enough didn’t it.

[00:24:13] God I’m dealing with a bunch of old people it’s okay I guess yeah I’ve been a little busy.

[00:24:18] I know.

[00:24:18] So that gets us through my first sheet of stuff then if we don’t want to talk about or if you’re done talking about that.

[00:24:23] Yeah we’re good.

[00:24:25] Nothing else you can remember from that day.

[00:24:28] Well there’s all kinds of stuff to talk about from that day but well then talk about it nobody wants to listen to it.

[00:24:36] Do tell just especially bill is underpowered electric.

[00:24:41] Extras and he’s a big fan of extreme flight apparently he had some very nice planes there that were a little short on power.

[00:24:48] Mm-hmm.

[00:24:49] Yeah I think it.

[00:24:51] If you want to launch them to the moon, yeah, gotcha, they would excel. They look like a look like the motor was going to leave the wings and tail in flight, just going straight up. Yeah.

[00:25:03] Had a couple jets there yep.

[00:25:06] One of the guys had a couple of his jets. Yeah, ironically enough he flew the mb339 and the same livery as Reggie’s that has not flown yet.

[00:25:20] Really.

[00:25:20] Yeah, hmm, interesting. I took a couple pictures of those flying and sent them to Reggie, but I forgot to because it’s going on, what three years now?

[00:25:30] Anyway yeah I’ve lost track actually.

[00:25:34] And his is in the alternate scheme which I kind of like yeah.

[00:25:42] I do too and that covering that printed or whatever it is doesn’t seem to like sag or wrinkle like the ultra coat does.

[00:25:52] Which is annoying yeah I get it’s in that much for it and it’s all saggy and okay.

[00:26:02] So let’s move on, because that’s fun. So one of the things that we talked about talking about was how we set up the vehicles for transporting planes, what we do to them, what we have done to them or what we plan on doing to them in the future.

[00:26:22] At some point.

[00:26:23] Yes, and I thought it would be kind of funny to- or not funny, but kind of good to also discuss how the hobby has influenced our vehicle purchases, because I think within the last several months we have all had a vehicle or vehicle purchased that was due to- well, not necessarily due to, but influenced by the hobby.

[00:26:46] Yes hobby in mind.

[00:26:48] Yeah yes.

[00:26:50] Our same considerations were factored into the purchase decision yes.

[00:26:55] Yep and all I can say is I think we all figure that bigger is better I.

[00:27:01] I just keep thinking about all the vehicles I’ve owned over the years and they keep swelling. They’re getting bigger and bigger and bigger every time I buy a vehicle.

[00:27:08] Yeah.

[00:27:08] I wish I could say the same I wish I could say the same.

[00:27:15] You shrunk actually from what you used to have.

[00:27:19] Kind of. I mean like the pickup is almost as big as the suburban was. Yeah, I can fit. I can fit almost as much into the pickup truck that I could the suburban, but it’s not exactly the same.

[00:27:34] Yeah I would say my latest one has downsized me a little bit I think I could get more in the expedition.

[00:27:39] I was thinking the same thing like you’re okay so they’ve you what did you buy and then we’ll.

[00:27:44] I have a 2012 tundra double cab which is the so-called long bed it’s six and a half foot bed.

[00:27:51] And so when you were over here the other day showing me some of the things you’ve done to it, I noticed it’s. It’s nice and wide, I mean because there’s not the electronics and all that kind of stuff that’s in the back like you get in suvs. So it’s definitely wider than what I would have in mind, but it doesn’t seem like you have the depth.

[00:28:12] Or the seats folded down always had the seats fold down the expedition.

[00:28:16] Well, that’s what I was going to say you. You lose access to the front of it, like you used to have in an suv, and that’s a that’s.

[00:28:23] That’s hurt me a lot not being able to access through the so-called back doors of the expedition right stuff so.

[00:28:29] To pull it forward or to store stuff from the front or to tie something down even that was up there.

[00:28:33] So I think I’m actually down a little bit in space with this one I mean it’s it’s close but I think I’m down.

[00:28:39] So what made you buy a truck as somebody that’s had an suv for ever since I’ve known you like five years.

[00:28:47] I’ve had expeditions for 20 plus years, so yeah, ford ticked me off. I’ve been a ford guy my entire life and I just could not bring myself by another ford. And there’s no way in the world I’m gonna buy a chevy. Sorry Tom, that’s okay. Dodge isn’t even a consideration with the stellantis group. An older dodge would probably be fine, but anything made by stellantis I have no interest in whatsoever.

[00:29:16] So that left toyota or nissan. My brother’s got a nissan nice truck. I got no problem with that. But I want toyota’s reliability and I’ve had so much bad reliability with the fords recently. It’s like I’m sick of this. Yeah, so I went to the toyota- toyota’s.

[00:29:32] So if I can ask why a truck over say the toyota highlander or the sequoia right that’s where I was going.

[00:29:40] Oh okay.

[00:29:41] So shut your mouth Tom.

[00:29:44] The toyotas are at a premium price. Especially I wanted a second gen toyota. I didn’t want one of the newer ones, I wanted an older one, once again for reliability issues, because the second gens are the ones that apparently don’t break Ron’s making faces.

And I went looking for sequoia. I mean, the tundras are hard enough to find and I could not find a sequoia which is the full size suv within my price range. So that’s why we don’t have a sequoia, otherwise, if the right sequoia fell into my lap, I would have had that.

[00:31:27] No, I just took my socks off, so I he keeps throwing clothing across the room. Well, I found out both. Both of my socks, as I’m sitting here, had holes in the bottom of them, so I tore the holes bigger and took them off so I wouldn’t accidentally put them in the laundry.

[00:31:44] And then the power.

[00:31:45] So are they catholic or lutheran socks they are because they’re holy.

[00:31:51] Nice yeah.

[00:31:53] I saw that coming from a mile away but that was funny.

[00:31:55] Couldn’t resist mm-hmm so david what did you do to said to pick them up truck.

[00:32:05] So when I first got the truck, I had a tonneau cover on it, which I actually thought was going to be just fine, but as I used it more and more, I just realized that the tonneau cover has really limited me in space. The bed’s only 20 some odd inches deep and some of my airplanes, like the quarter scale d7, is taller than that, so I wouldn’t be able to close the lid on it and it just wasn’t ideal. It also leaked a little bit. We’re getting some water in there, mm-hmm. So the first thing I did was end up getting a used

[00:32:36] Fiberglass topper, for it spent a fair amount of time trying to find one of those. A local club member here found me one in iowa and we’ve talked about that in previous episodes where I had to go a little bit sketchy places to pick up a topper.

[00:32:51] You do what you gotta do for the hobby.

[00:32:53] Mm-hmm.

[00:32:54] So we got the topper.

[00:32:55] And the truck had a spray-in bed liner. When I got it. It was not a factory spray-in, but it was definitely done by an auto body shop or something along that lines it was. It was a well-done spray-in liner.

[00:33:08] Not great on the airplanes, and if they would slide a little bit- which I found out a way to keep them from sliding by just throwing moving blankets on top of them- but if they did slide or move around a lot, they were getting black marks on them from the spray-in bed liner. Not an ideal situation and it was really hard to clean. I just didn’t care for it. So I ended up finally breaking down and buying a bed rug for it, which is a bed liner that’s made out of carpet.

[00:33:38] And it’s got foam padding in it, so it’s much easier on your knees when you’re crawling around in it, which is nice. Aircraft don’t slide around on it. A little bit of velcro keeps them in place. Just a really nice liner. And then, since I was doing that, I decided to go ahead and do some extra things to it as well.

[00:33:58] The topper had blocked the light on the back of the cab for the cargo box, so there was no light in the bed of the truck in the dark. So I know I needed to run some power back there for some led lighting, which I ended up getting some really inexpensive ones off of amazon and they work really well.

[00:34:19] And then at the last minute I thought it’d be really nice to have 12 volt power in the back of this truck to charge off of. I mean, it’s not a big deal to pop the hood and hook to the battery and so forth, but it would just be really convenient to be able to just plug into something in the back of the truck. So I was having to run wiring for the topper first. I had to also run power for the brake lights that were built into it as well. So anyway, I was having a bit run power. Anyway, I decided to go ahead.

[00:34:49] And just run power from the battery all the way to the bed of the truck and put a 12 volt connectors in the in the bed. I got lucky right at the tailgate, right, right at the tailgate. Yeah, so the tailgate is now a nice little charging platform, which I’m not real crazy about putting LiPo on my very expensive bed liner. So now I put

[00:35:09] I need to get a.

[00:35:11] Baking sheet to throw in the bed.

[00:35:13] I got lucky with this truck, though the previous owner had some sort of large stereo system in it and left a good portion of the wiring to the back seats of the truck, so it had what did you? What size was that number four, about four, I don’t think. Yeah, about four gauge wire- really high end. Copper silicone jacket- really nice wire. And it ran all the way from the battery to the back seat of the truck so I was able to tap into that and then run.

[00:35:43] I ran. I’m not going to run that four gauge the rest of the way. I went ahead and just ran some eight gauge wire through the frame rails all the way to the back of the truck and up through the tail. Light nice little box right there.

[00:35:57] Yeah so it’s a slick looking setup actually.

[00:35:59] Yeah, I’m pretty happy with it. I used. One of our listeners recommended using some solar connectors. I found some. I don’t know exactly what they’re called. When I look them up on amazon they’re just called sae connectors. I don’t know if that’s what the solar industry calls them. Sae means something completely different to me, coming from the automotive world. But well, sae connectors- real nice. So I got, I put two connectors in a project box and bolted that to the side of the bed.

[00:36:29] I also got swing away toolboxes in the back of the truck as well and they mount right at the tailgate and they fill in the space between the wheel well and the tailgate, really in a space that you don’t use for much of anything, and I really like them. If you look them up, they’re called swing cases, but these are generic swing cases. They’re exactly the same as, from what I can tell, they just don’t have the swing case label on it and they were half the price.

[00:36:57] It’s an expensive label expensive label yes.

[00:37:01] They work beautifully and I really like those back there. So I’ve got the little storage area for charging cords and that type of thing right there at the tailgate and I got a project box from amazon that I mounted the connectors for the 12 volts in and mounted that on the side of the bed.

[00:37:20] Then I got thinking. After I did all that and I got everything mounted and made that box, I realized I didn’t put a cigarette lighter in it for anything that needs that type of connector or lighting cigarettes, or lighting cigarettes like yeah, I, I smoke so heavily chimney he is, I’m, I’m thinking more my air compressor so I can reach the trailer, but yeah,

[00:37:45] Forgot about that. So I ended up ordering another project box that I mounted a heavy duty cigarette lighter adapter receptacle into, and I also put two posts on it in case somebody doesn’t have a. I made adapters for my chargers so they can plug directly into the truck, but for, like guests who have just clamp on alligator clips, I’ve just made two screws sticking up where they can clamp onto it and that plugs into the truck.

[00:38:16] So kind of a kind of a guest receptacle and I put cigarette lighter adapter in there and that’s what I’ve done to my truck.

[00:38:27] It’s very nice and very handy. But here’s my question, because I’m a paranoid type person about this: how many batteries can you charge off of your 12 volt battery before you have to have a jump to start your car?

[00:38:42] Don’t know. I have only ran my truck battery down one time, charging off the under the hood, previously, and I jump-started it with a six cell LiPo.

[00:38:54] Oh okay this truck or a previous version.

[00:38:59] I’m sorry you blurred out.

[00:39:01] Oh sorry did you have to jump-start the current vehicle or was it one from previously.

[00:39:06] It was my second expedition okay all right because I.

[00:39:10] Think I remember that.

[00:39:11] Actually, and the battery was actually reaching the end of its life, it wasn’t a healthy battery, right? So yeah it. Just we had some alligator clips and we just jumped it. He said the wires got real hot, real fast, but on 22 volts the truck started right away.

[00:39:26] Oh my gosh, yeah, yeah, I just like I said, I don’t know- I’ve never done the math to figure out how many you can actually charge without killing your battery.

[00:39:36] Never really had a problem I’ve always had the jumper cables in the truck just in case we do run it down.

[00:39:41] Yeah.

[00:39:42] I’ve got a bump box at home. I really need to start just throwing in the truck. But yeah, I have to jump start my lawnmower all the time, so it lives in the garage.

[00:39:49] I mean the. The math should be fairly easy, right, like most, most automotive batteries are somewhere around 600 cold cranking amps or whatever. So yeah, but

[00:40:00] That’s how much it can put out not how much.

[00:40:01] Capacity it has. No, I understand, but like seems like the math ought to be. Like I’m not into math, but seems like the math ought to be.

[00:40:13] What? One to three amps. Well, unless we’re using our spectrum g2 batteries, which can take what? Up to 11, I think. Some of them or more maybe, I don’t know.

[00:40:30] I don’t know. Daniel and I have used his battery out of his boat a few times when we go up to like streeter just to charge right there where we’re sitting. Yeah, we’ve charged off that all day, both of us, and battery is fine. I mean, it starts the boat right up so, and I know that’s marine battery, so that’s.

[00:40:50] Yeah, but, yeah. But I mean, I mean, if you haven’t had problems, then there’s no reason to think about it. But that’s just something that goes through my mind.

[00:40:57] And I do consider that if I’ve been charging a lot I might go start the truck and let it run for a few minutes just cause, but I’ve never had an issue.

[00:41:18] One. There’s plenty of room under the hood to get one stuffed if need be. It wouldn’t probably be the full size, it would be. What I’d probably do is do a smaller, a large lawn tractor battery to actually use to jump start myself.

[00:41:42] But, like I said, it’s never really been a problem, except for the one time I had that battery that was on its way out anyway.

[00:41:52] Way back in the day when I used to race rc cars.

[00:41:56] Some tracks you would go to, the only way to charge your batteries was off the vehicle battery right. And this is back in the nickel metal hydride days or even nycads, when you were, when you were serious about racing, you would really, really hit those batteries, sometimes six, eight amps. And I, all those years of racing I never, never had any problem with having to have somebody give me a jump, and frequently I would run multiple classes, so that meant

[00:42:26] Multiple batteries being charged throughout the course of an event, so I think it would take a lot to run a battery down to a point where you needed a jump. But, like I said, the math is probably easy. I just don’t know what it.

[00:42:39] Is yeah I need to look into that because I’m sure that’s not difficult but anyway yeah.

[00:42:46] Okay, so dave’s setup’s pretty slick. I like I’ve seen the pictures of the of the finish. Well, I think it was the finished product and it looks, looks really slick. Oh yeah, I’ve.

[00:42:58] Not okay so I ended up building a wing rack to sit on the ledge of the camper shell oh yeah I.

[00:43:10] Right, yeah, it’s completely removable. No screws. No, I mean, it takes seconds to take it out, if ever needed to be. And that is like double the capacity of the truck. This last week it was the first time I was able to use that and it made a huge difference. Yeah, having

[00:43:41] Yeah, there was. There were some issues, but yeah, we won’t go into that. Issues with the truck: no, sitting on my stump, oh gotcha. So, tommy.

[00:43:54] So I actually have two vehicles that I consider. Well, I guess technically right now it’s three. No, there’s no dragon. Well, no, it’s kind of a long story, but anyway. So I had have a bmw x3, which is it’s like. I love that vehicle. It’s a small suv and up until what, a couple years ago, when I got the first jet and had some other larger airplanes-

[00:44:25] That just physically wouldn’t fit in the back of it. So I started looking around and I found an old 1994 chevrolet full-size pickup. So it’s a single cab, but it’s a long bed, it’s a true long, it’s an eight-foot bed, it’s a real truck.

[00:44:39] Yeah.

[00:44:41] And I actually.

[00:44:42] No air conditioning.

[00:44:42] No, I’ve actually grown quite fond of it actually, but anyway, it’s, in my opinion, the perfect local airplane hauler. It’s not something I would probably put on the road to champagne or any place longer, because it gets about eight miles to the gallon, but it’s like. The amount of stuff that it can haul is with that eight-foot bed. Is awesome. Those eight-footers are so hard to find anymore. Yeah, yeah, well, they don’t. I don’t think.

[00:45:13] They make eight foot beds anymore. My six and a half is considered a long bed. Yeah, anyway, my biggest airplanes would fit in it, no problem, but not, like I said, ideal for taking to monticello or any place much farther away than that. So started looking when I got to where I’m at now and I really, really like my x3. Like it’s. It’s like the perfect suv for me, it’s. I don’t haul kids around. Pretty much all I haul is airplanes and myself.

[00:45:49] And I really like the way the car drives and so that kind of led me down the bmw x5 road. It’s a bigger suv but still the bmw, all the bells and whistles that come with bmws, and I found one- not locally here, halfway between here and home- that I really liked and it’s. It’s actually set up very similar to my x3. It’s the same color, it’s it has all the similar kind of.

[00:46:19] Features plus a few extras that are that are really nice, but it was in dallas, texas. So the last time I was able to come home, on the way back on the flight back, I just hopped off and dallas went and picked it up and drove it.

[00:46:35] The rest of the way to where I’m at now.

[00:46:38] And it’s perfect. Like I’ve measured the back of it, my jet will fit in it. Actually, any of the largest airplanes that I’ve ever owned will fit in it and be able to close the hatch. So it’s like. It’s like the best of all the worlds. Right, it’s got. It’s the bmw that I like, with all the bells and whistles. It’s comfortable, it’s a really good ride and it fits all my airplanes. So

[00:47:00] For going to monticello and other plates like toledo or where maybe even joe noll- if we need to take it to joe noll, it’d be the perfect vehicle for that, because everything will fit in it and it’s a comfortable ride. The downside is that it was kind of expensive and it’s so nice on the inside that I don’t want to mess with it, like I don’t want to put a rack in it. I don’t want to mess with the electronics or anything like that. So probably on longer trips.

[00:47:31] I’ll: either, if there’s no power at the field, I’m going to I’ll throw a 12-volt battery in there to hook the charger onto or whatever, or I’ll be with you guys and you guys have really, really nice setups that I can borrow. But for local, that pickup truck is perfect. And what I did in the back of mine- I’ve not ran power to the back, but I think I dave- I may sort of copy some of your ideas, or maybe just outright.

[00:47:57] Plagiarize that’s what you’re nice for the power but what I did for a rack system is.

[00:48:04] I wish I had seen your setup before I built mine. But I just built a pvc framework with two levels, added a floor to each level, covered each floor with some of that outdoor type carpet. That velcro sticks really nice to, yeah, and it’s light enough to where fully assembled. I can slide it out of the back of the pickup, put stuff on it in the front or whatever, and then slide it back in and close the tailgate and then almost

[00:48:32] Functions like a giant drawer.

[00:48:34] Exactly, exactly, and then and then, like you, I went shopping for a camper top and had to drive to indiana because I found one that matched same color, same amount of patina and everything.

[00:48:49] Consideration. Yeah well, I mean it. You don’t want to put a brand new one on it? Yeah so, but it actually is like the perfect airplane hauler. I just wish it got slightly better mileage, otherwise I would. I would probably not have ended up with the x5. So, two vehicles, oh, the x3. Eventually we’re going to sell that to our, to our one of our children. He wants it. So yeah, currently I own three airplane haulers, but soon to be two, that’s.

[00:49:22] I got the santa fe too. So, yeah, dave has two as well. But like I said, I’m gonna, I’m gonna copy the power setup and then like, like, like what dave did in the bag of his, I think, when I get home someday, yeah.

[00:49:49] And then the other thing is: there is room, there is a spot for a second battery in the front of the of the pickup. So it was actually. It’s actually a 2500, it’s a heavy duty, one ton. So it’s got the dual battery. It didn’t, it didn’t come from the factory with it, but there is a provision in the front, it was an option, and so all I gotta do is drop the battery in there and run the cables, if I choose to do it that way. Nice, which I might. Yep. You got spot, make nice and easy.

[00:50:24] Well, so I was in a little bit of a different predicament because I already have the trailer but I was begging and borrowing and whatever, trying to find somebody to pull it because I didn’t have a vehicle to pull it long distances. Well, yeah,

[00:50:44] Like dave, I have sworn myself, I think, off of expeditions at this point, because I think between the two of us we’ve probably had what seven or eight that have gone.

[00:50:57] Had three of them too. So six or no, yeah, okay, six between the two of us, and so I’m just like dave too. I was, I’m a ford guy, I have always been ford, but this time I jumped ship and actually bought a gmc yukon xl.

[00:51:22] No, yeah, Reggie has a suburban, so that’s. It’s not a suburban, it’s a gmc yukon xl. They play with the names, it’s the same. I know that. Okay, but stop, I didn’t buy a suburban because Reggie had a suburban. Actually okay, although, but anyway. So I definitely knew I wanted something, I wanted something big, I wanted something that could pull my trailer and anything that I might get in the future.

[00:51:51] And a camper bigger trailer, who knows? So we found this one- so what? Three weeks ago now or something like that- and ended up buying it. So I’m kind of in the same spot as tommy, though I don’t really want to do much inside of it because I have the trailer, so I don’t necessarily need to, but it’s nice to have something I know I can pull wherever I want to go and handle it. That

[00:52:20] Way if you need to you can just fold the seats throw your stuff your head throw blankets over.

[00:52:24] And that’s the other thing, like the amount of room in the back of that is there’s a lot like it’s. It’s impressive what you can fit in there. And the other thing that I have noticed too, and I don’t know if it’s just I’m not good at packing or what, but

[00:52:42] Tommy, but anyway it seems like you can fit more in the back of a truck or like suburban whatever than I can in the trailer comfortably, really like it feels like with the trailer you can’t stack stuff as well.

[00:53:10] But it’s like with the trailer. When I load airplanes in there, I have to tie everyone down, whereas when I load them in the back of like expeditions or whatever stuff is, you just stack it on top of each other and wrap it with a blanket or something like that and it’s not going anywhere.

So I don’t know how I feel about that and I do, like the expedition or whatever, you can keep an eye on your stuff, right, if something slides and bangs into something, oh, I’ve got to pull off side of the road and readjust. Yeah, if it’s in the trailer or in the bed of the truck, it’s like out of mind what’s going on back there.

[00:53:46] Yeah so I mean I can see pro or pros and cons to both ways of doing it I myself.

[00:53:57] Prefer the suv over to pickup. I mean, I’ve got a really nice setup, I like what I’ve got, same, but I would rather have the suv, yeah.

[00:54:07] Yeah, same, I mean one reason why I bought that. Another reason about the x5 and not an x7: the x7 is roughly just a little bit smaller than a suburban, but also about three times the price of a suburban. So that’s, yeah, I know what mean I. I would prefer an suv also. So what?

[00:55:13] Yeah, well, I mean it’s a physically bigger, the brakes are bigger, it’s got a little bit more power, a lot more power. It’s just a heavier vehicle so it can do a lot of the times. The towing is really limited by your braking ability, not so much by how much power it has. Yes, the braking, the suspension, not the power. Yeah, so

[00:55:32] That’s one, one thing I really like about the one I got. So it has an integrated brake controller so I can control the brakes and everything. It has the air suspension in the back so it self levels itself. For this week. Huh, for this week. Shut up, dave. And then what else? Oh, I think it’s rated for like up to nine thousand pounds, so it should do me well. It’s got the six two in it, which is quite a bit bigger than I guess most like suburbans and stuff have the five, three, five, three.

[00:56:03] Mostly not the five three. You can get the six liters in them, but they usually you have to go twenty five hundred for that. Okay, but

[00:56:11] Yeah well and I was surprised we took it up to well we took it on a trip our north our back it averaged.

[00:56:19] Bad right for a big.

[00:56:21] Much better than the expedition that was fifteen ish sixteen yeah so but that kind of like sixteen.

[00:56:31] Figured. Maybe mine, since it was having the timing chain issues, was getting worse mileage because of that, but if yours was doing the same, then maybe not. Yeah,

[00:56:39] My five four three valve was yeah sixteen seventeen I so I’ve got a quarter tank and I’ve gone 450 miles so.

[00:56:48] I’m. That is something I gotta complain about. The tundra. It’s got a tiny tank. Oh really, I’m at the gas station constantly. Yeah, I think this one’s a 30 gallon, maybe 32, I don’t know. Yeah, all my expeditions had to ride around 30 gallons, 28 to 32, somewhere in that range. Yeah, yeah, this thing, I don’t know. I don’t know exactly how big it is, but I know if I run it down to half a tank it takes 10 gallons.

[00:57:12] 22, 24, 18 To 20 gallon tank: yeah, but it’s and it gets poor gas mileage so I’m at the gas station all the time with this thing. Yeah, that’s too bad. Yeah, overall round trip, mostly in town, it gets 14.9, So I’m getting essentially 15 mile a gallon. Ouch on the highway it’ll pull down 21, 22. So it’s not awful. So that’s about average. Yeah, probably. Yeah, but yeah, the combined in town at 14 with that small tank, yeah, yeah, I.

[00:57:50] Get it that’s everything but a gas station so yeah.

[00:57:55] So that’s the, the vehicle I ended up getting solely because of the hobby. Like, honestly, if it wasn’t for that, we don’t need a big vehicle, we don’t really do anything else, that I have to pull things or go far, that our cars wouldn’t work for you’re.

[00:58:15] Can fit a lot in there yeah I mean you really can it’s true I can fit I can impresses me.

[00:58:31] Impressive? Yeah, I think so too, but to be fair to be fair, the jet does break down into quite a few pieces, like the. The horizontal stabs come.

[00:58:44] Well five yeah so I mean it helps it’s not like I’m breaking in half or.

[00:58:50] Anything, no, but I mean that does help because a lot of times it’s not a big jet with the vertical kind of limit you can. You can’t rotate it 90 degrees, so the tail’s sticking up or whatever. So that actually does help. You can lay it on its side or whatever. But yep, it is still. I’m not going to take that away from you, but it is impressive to how much

[00:59:08] Stuff with, with five gallons of fuel with the. I’m trying to think, oh, the, the big case I have right, fire extinguisher, a fire extinguisher, my big transmitter case, the charging or the chargers I have, which is a good size case, and the batteries and all that stuff, yeah, it fits.

[00:59:31] About how you can finagle things in. Yeah, but anyway, yeah, so whenever you get back and stuff and we start going places, we’ll have new ways of getting things there and then we can take the trailer, which will be very nice too. I have.

[00:59:52] Finished, so still have a few more things I need to do too. I still want to get solar for the top and all that. But we ended up taking it when we went camping the other day and I was able to run with the battery that I have in there and the inverter and stuff the refrigerator I ran. It was about 10 hours and I think it used like 13 of the battery. So sweet and that was. And that was running the starlink dish too. So, yeah, that’s awesome. It’ll be great when? So did you guys?

[01:00:21] Camp in the trailer or did you take the camper too we.

[01:00:25] Took the camper, but we crystalline piper actually slept in the trailer. Oh nice, and it was nice because I was able to set the air conditioner to 61. So it ran and it actually does a decent job of keeping up with the heat, obviously much better at night when it’s not in the sun and all that’s beating down on it, but it kept. I think we were at high 80s and it was low 70s in there during the day, so it’s

[01:00:57] Lighter color, yeah, and then the top is silver, so at least it’s not completely dark, but it’s going to definitely help. Yeah, so cool. Yeah, it was fun. I have to do that more often. I’d really like to make a couple trips out to the field sometime and just spend the night out there. Maybe we can do that. In this fall we can do a, a camp night or something, have a fire out there, something like that.

[01:01:19] Too. Yeah, that’d be awesome, considering my trailer hasn’t been anywhere in two years. That’s on you. That’s yeah. Yeah, brought it back from joe, now parked in the backyard and then moved since.

[01:01:34] Well, we’ll have to take it back to joe and all next year. There you go, hi gentlemen. I don’t think I have much anything else to talk about to you.
