Ep138: A Dynamic Balsa trip, and the Illini Jets fly in

[00:00:11] Hello, everyone, and welcome to the RC Plane Lab podcast. I'm Ron. I'm Dave. And I'm Reggie. Welcome to episode 138, I think. Pretty sure we're 138. I have no clue. Good enough. We'll call it 138 and fix that later. What have you guys been up to?

[00:00:30] Getting photographed in a car, rushing back from the East Coast to make the podcast, Jet Fest. There's been quite a few things. So we have something to talk about, at least. Well, at least you and I probably do.

[00:00:43] Oh, boy.

[00:00:44] Dave?

[00:00:45] Welcome to another Reggie and Ron episode. Why, Dave? What has gone on? Well, you guys went and played. We did. I had a prior commitment with the AKC Canine Agility at the State Fair and had to run the timing equipment and pull all the equipment out there on the big trailer. So while you guys went and played, I was at the fairgrounds. Well, how'd that go? Horribly. Why horribly? Okay. So I was out there last weekend. It was Friday and Saturday.

[00:01:19] Last Friday, we had a major rainstorm come through and it dumped a lot of water. So there's a lot of flooding.

[00:01:28] It was very fast. Yes. No time to soak in.

[00:01:31] So a couple of things. I was a little worried about pulling this massive trailer onto the fairgrounds because there's a lot of mud. Yeah. So my truck is still covered in mud. I went mudding at the fairgrounds is what I demanded to. The trailer is also caked in mud, which I'll have to deal with at a later date. But that's not the major point. So we had all this rain. We got flooding. Okay. Yeah. And so we had the big coliseum at the fairgrounds, the big enclosed arena.

[00:02:04] This is a fairly large show I'm working. And so I'm going to be behind the desk running the timing equipment for several hours straight. So need to go to the restroom before we get started.

[00:02:15] Need to evacuate before it's time to sit.

[00:02:18] Yes. We need to run off the checklist and make sure everything's good to go. Go to the brick outhouse that they use. Actually, it's a pretty nice facility. For what it is. Yes. Yeah. For state. For what it is. Yeah. Yeah. It's pretty nice. But because we had so much rain and it's got an open door to it, there was about a quarter inch of water flooding the entire restroom.

[00:02:45] Okay.

[00:02:46] Fine. Standing up. Not worried about it. Wash my hands. Head back out towards the door. I get about 10 or 15 foot from the door and my foot goes out from underneath me. And I'm laying flat on my back. Oh, no. In a quarter inch of men's room water. At the state fair. It's bad enough. Oh. Normally. But you had that state fair stank to it. And I'm covered in water, which I'm hoping is just rainwater. It's just rainwater. It's just rainwater. And what I'm hoping is mud.

[00:03:34] Here's the thing. I'm not getting back in my truck to go home and change soaked in this stuff. Right. I have fabric seats.

[00:03:41] And you probably don't have time. And I don't have a towel. I don't have time. Someone has to run the timer.

[00:03:46] Ironic. Ironic. Yeah. So for the next six plus hours, I'm stewing.

[00:03:53] No.

[00:03:54] Just rainwater. Let's just go with rainwater. State fair men's room. Rainwater. Floor.

[00:04:00] Yeah.

[00:04:01] Did you have a white t-shirt on or anything?

[00:04:04] It was tan. That's not good. Poor Dave. How did you get up? Quickly.

[00:04:11] I mean, you had to put your hands in it then. You had to put my hands in it. Yeah. I mean, luckily I can wash my hands again. But then I have to touch my crutches. Which are laying in the water. It's never ending. Yeah. My cup. It went flying. I got my metal cup I carry with me all over the place. It went flying. It has a big dent and a crack in it now.

[00:04:33] Oh. And you washed that since you brought it here, though, right?

[00:04:37] Yes. It's been washed since. Yes. It's been washed thoroughly. Also, there was a young child walking to the restroom as I'm hitting the floor. He goes screaming out of the restroom, never to be seen again.

[00:04:49] Aw. I guess he just assumed you were okay.

[00:04:53] Maybe he was running to get help. That's what I thought.

[00:04:55] No one ever showed up.

[00:04:57] From the other side of the fairgrounds.

[00:04:58] I was there for a while, scraping off the, hopefully, mud.

[00:05:04] Poor Dave.

[00:05:06] Well, I mean, not to rub it in, but Reggie and I had a much better weekend.

[00:05:10] I'm hoping you guys had a much better weekend. Well, I think so. Welcome to Dave's World. Yeah, we did. Okay. We compared to that, yes, we had an awesome weekend. So, if I come down with hepatitis in the next couple weeks, you guys know where that came from.

[00:05:25] Now we know where it came from. That's not contagious, is it? Do I have to worry? Yeah, it is. Oh, shoot. Wow. Wow. He, I mean, how nice of him. We should have a disclaimer for this episode. Everybody else is safe, just not us. Oh. Well, before we get in, so that was your weekend, then everything else went okay?

[00:05:43] Everything else went great. That's good. The event ran flawlessly, a really good time, but yeah, that kind of sucked.

[00:05:55] I fall, it happens, but men's room, state fair, really, in the water. You could have been outside and done it. Yeah.

[00:06:04] Not Dave. He picks the best places to do things. Yeah. True. Of course, not many people saw you other than the one child, so. And now everybody that's listening knows.

[00:06:14] Yeah, I'm pretty sure there's a good visualization.

[00:06:16] Picture this. Everybody thought I had sweated through my shirt. It was hot and humid, and everybody just thought I was a sweaty pig.

[00:06:22] Your sweat smells like urinal for some reason. Are you sweating mud?

[00:06:28] That gravy? Okay. Reel it back in. Put the train back on the track. So, what else is new, then? Anything?

[00:06:40] RC Jet Fest. Like I said, Brian's. Yes, we went to a very long car ride in the middle of nothing for the longest.

[00:06:49] Whatever. You slept.

[00:06:50] Anyway, so.

[00:06:51] I see that. Did you guys see the new E-Flight SR-71 that's coming out? I did not.

[00:06:56] Very interesting. Yeah. I have not seen that. Sort of. 40 millimeter fans, though? Yeah. That sounds kind of small. Small.

[00:07:04] So, I have the specs, because I knew I wouldn't remember it. Let me find that, though. Okay, so the E-Flight SR-71 Blackbird Twin 40 millimeter EDF BNF Basic with AS3X and Safe Select. Whew, that's long. Pre-order now, by the way, for delivery in October.

[00:07:20] For how much? $250?

[00:07:23] Yeah. So, the price isn't bad.

[00:07:25] I was surprised. I was expecting $299 or $350.

[00:07:31] Really? For that size?

[00:07:33] They've overpriced everything so much recently. I just was expecting the higher prices on it.

[00:07:37] I guess so. So, it's a 19.88 inch wingspan, which is sight. Like, we had to get down to the thousandth of an inch.

[00:07:45] Are we pushing, like, a UMX almost for this?

[00:07:48] It's falling between the UMX and the regular stuff.

[00:07:50] Yeah.

[00:07:51] It's falling in there with the F-14.

[00:07:54] Yeah, which that's not UMX either, but it's, it's, I don't know what you would call that. Like, I don't consider that, like, a… It's UMX Plus. Oh, that's, okay. I can see that. So, it's, it's almost 38 inches long. 37.6, which is 955 millimeters for our non-American speaking friends.

[00:08:11] That's you, Trevor.

[00:08:13] Ouch. 29.4 ounces, 834 grams. Runs on a 14.8 volt 4S 2200 milliamp hour battery. Wow. So, you could, you've got plenty of those. Battery must weigh as much as a plane. Probably so, to be honest. That probably doubles the weight. Apparently, it's almost ready to fly out of the box. So, that's going to be a long box. It's a very large pizza box.

[00:08:40] I wonder why they started to do this so small, though, for that model.

[00:08:44] I don't know. So, I'm going to be honest with you. The size doesn't bother me. Like, I, I'm fine with that. What I don't like is the non-retractable gear. It has the gear you pull off or put on, kind of like the A-10. You can throw it, basically. Yes.

[00:08:58] It actually has some sort of launch mechanism in the programming to make it much easier to launch.

[00:09:04] Much easier, yeah. Same as the F-14. Yeah. So, that's nice. That's all built into safe.

[00:09:09] I am impressed with one thing with them, and this is stupid. They painted the motors red, and they mounted them at the back of the plane. I know, right? So, it looks like afterburners. I have yet to see it, so. Unfortunately, afterburners on that are green, but close enough.

[00:09:26] But still, no, it's a, it's a good-looking airplane. It really is. I don't know about the price on it, though, for what it is. It's smallish. To me. Which means I'll probably get one.

[00:09:39] I'm trying to think of that one little jet that came out a while back. It started off at $200, and I can't think of it. One looked like a little airliner. Citation. The Citation UMX, I think, was like $199 or something like that when it first came out. Really?

[00:09:51] That is actually a UMX plane. Yeah. Those run on like 1 or 2S. I don't remember what that one was, but yeah.

[00:09:58] I would say the price is not too bad, then, for this.

[00:10:01] I was pleasantly surprised. Right, but I have to think about me. Is it worth that for what it is? Like, I love that airplane. Without having gear, you're going to be, well, it has gear, but I would prefer to not watch it fly with gear the whole time. So, it would be hand launch and then landing on grass.

[00:10:23] Oh, it would never roll on grass with those tiny wheels? No.

[00:10:26] Well, true, but if I was at the other field, it actually has the paved runway. Your paved runway, yeah. But, like, flying it around at our field, local one here, or at home.

[00:10:36] Well, maybe if it sells enough, it probably will push up to a larger size. I don't know. I don't know how any of that works, but that would be kind of cool.

[00:10:43] I've seen videos that fly. They have it on YouTube and stuff, and it looks like it flies well.

[00:10:48] I'll say, if I see one pop up at a swap meet sometime, I'd be interested in it. I don't think I'll buy one new.

[00:10:53] Yeah. It depends. Like I said, I can't tell you how I will change my mind in the next several months. So we'll see one next month. No, they're not out until October, so. And I won't pre-order. Where I get in trouble is where I'm walking through Brian's shop, and I see one sitting there, and it's like, oh. Mm-hmm. That looks better than I thought I was going to. And then I.

[00:11:16] I watched you do that this past weekend.

[00:11:19] No, you didn't.

[00:11:20] I watched you pick up quite a few things.

[00:11:22] Well, no, not really. But I planned on getting some of the stuff I went up there for. Mm-hmm. But, yeah, so that's E-Flight's new airplane. I kind of think it's cool. We'll see.

[00:11:33] And they've got the red fins with it for those that are visually challenged.

[00:11:37] Which would probably be me.

[00:11:39] You can change them out. They have black or red tail fins.

[00:11:42] Oh, nice. They're just clip-ins. Yeah.

[00:11:44] I wonder if it actually snaps in or if it's just like the way the Ultrixes work.

[00:11:51] Actually, it's a plastic clip. Oh, okay. This is what I saw. It looks very similar to the way the end plates on the Vertex work. Kind of a plastic spring-loaded clippy thing.

[00:12:03] Okay. That's kind of nice. You said 40 millimeter fans, right? Yes. Okay.

[00:12:07] You got two of them. That makes 80.

[00:12:11] Well, we're going to get it on the whole technical side of things. No, it doesn't. But anyway. It's fan-swept area. No, it doesn't. So, are you going to buy one?

[00:13:11] So the other thing I thought was cool, let's bring it back around. Real Flight, I don't know if it now has the MB339 on it. You can download that airplane.

[00:13:21] I have not been on a simulator for, I don't know how long. I don't even know what's out anymore. I got one. I got a brand new one at the house and have not used or even opened.

[00:13:28] Well, you should do that. And then you can fly the MB339.

[00:13:32] I'd actually have to buy a new laptop in order to put that on there.

[00:13:34] How old's your laptop? It runs on old laptops. Like my laptop's probably seven years old. I think mine's about 12. Oh. Well, it still might work. It doesn't take a lot of processing power for those.

[00:13:45] Windows 2010. Windows XP. Yeah. What mine runs on is 2010.

[00:13:54] What is 2010?

[00:13:55] Windows.

[00:13:57] What? I never even heard of that. Windows 10, I've heard of.

[00:14:00] Yeah, well, it's Windows 10.

[00:14:02] Oh, okay. Not 2010, right? Same thing. No, it's not the same thing. 2010's a long time ago. Windows 10 was, actually, it might have been the same.

[00:14:10] It's roughly 12 years ago.

[00:14:13] So, anyway, oh, and they also now have the Twimber on real flight.

[00:14:21] Well, of course, they're going to put all the new planes on the newer simulators.

[00:14:25] Yeah, there were.

[00:14:26] It's part of the download, isn't it?

[00:14:27] I didn't even, yeah, but it costs. I didn't even pay attention to how much.

[00:14:31] It costs now to download this stuff, the new airplanes and everything?

[00:14:33] Oh, yeah.

[00:14:34] It's a quarterly update. I think it's $20, $30, yeah.

[00:14:37] $20 for the quarterly update. You can, however, just buy airplanes individually, which is what I did with the last quarterly update when they had the erratics on there. Yeah, the erratics. So, I got that one. I think it was $2 or $3 just for one. It wasn't much.

[00:14:51] Okay, I am so far out of date. When I got mine was Phoenix 3.5.

[00:14:58] Okay, well, Phoenix is different than real flight. Mm-hmm. And when they changed out and ended it 5.5, that was the last thing I've seen. Well, Phoenix is no longer around. Exactly. That's when.

[00:15:09] Exactly. You see where I'm going with this?

[00:15:10] But I don't understand. You have the free real flight that comes with your e-flight, or not what's it, elite membership thing.

[00:15:18] Yeah, and it's sitting on the counter, or actually under the counter, still in the box, tucked away. Because I have nothing to play it on.

[00:15:24] Go buy a laptop. I mean, seriously. I bought one for my daughter.

[00:15:27] I'm not buying anything else.

[00:15:28] I'm good. Well, I like how you say you're not buying anything to save money. But you really should. Then you can, in the truck when you're gone all week, actually use a seatbelt.

[00:15:36] No, Ron. I think the words were a minute ago, no.

[00:15:39] I'm not buying anything else. No. Well, that is correct, and I agree with that sentiment. But sometimes rules need to be broken. Dave, where's your book so I can sign this amount? He changes things. Let me get this typed up. But anyway, so no, it's kind of cool. The sound on it sucks. It doesn't sound like a real turbine. It sounds like a bad EDF sound on the real flight. But flying it is pretty simple.

[00:16:03] If it flies like it flies on the simulator, it's going to maybe be kind of boring. Which is not a bad thing, I guess.

[00:16:11] No, not at all.

[00:16:11] Not as a beginner.

[00:16:13] Does that have the ability to become more than just a trainer? I mean, can you actually get into maybe aerobiotics for a little bit?

[00:16:20] It'll do mild aerobatics. Like, I've seen them do stuff with it that doesn't obviously hit the level of, like, elite aerosports or any of those type of airplanes. It's not as fast. It's not as strong. It should be scale-like. Yeah, and it's not what it's made for. it's made to get people into turbines, which is a good airplane for them.

[00:16:45] I don't remember seeing one flying.

[00:16:48] They didn't fly one of the JetMeet. But I've seen it fly several times.

[00:16:53] As a matter of fact, I don't remember seeing one when it first came out. Anybody flying one? I don't even remember seeing a video right now of seeing anybody flying one. I haven't.

[00:17:01] Of the 339? Yeah. It's not hard to find a video.

[00:17:05] No, not at all. I'm just saying I haven't seen one as of yet, more than I think about it. And, again, like when we was at the Fest, I don't remember seeing anybody taking one up.

[00:17:14] Well, they were flying at RC Fest. They flew it. I don't know if you were there for that or not. You might not have made it in time.

[00:17:20] No.

[00:17:21] At the JetMeet, I didn't see one fly, but they had one sitting out. I mean, we looked at it.

[00:17:25] Yeah.

[00:17:26] But I think they were flying other airplanes. But we'll get into that. So let's talk about Saturday then. I think we have all the preamble out of the way. Dave's falling. All that kind of stuff, right? In the poopy water? In poop water. Poop water. Yes.

[00:17:41] Backstroke.

[00:17:44] I couldn't get home and get a shower fast enough.

[00:17:49] Sorry.

[00:17:50] It evaporated off of you.

[00:17:51] Well, except the poop. Oh, or the residue was done. Really? Like, I shouldn't laugh at that. I'm so bad. I laugh at people falling. It's so funny.

[00:18:00] No. It's all good.

[00:18:01] I laugh at myself. If it bothered you, you wouldn't have told us. No. Okay. So Saturday. Reggie. What did we do Saturday? We started off. Plans changed a little bit. So I ended up getting a text from Terry Dunn saying he was going to be going through the area and stopping at Dynamic Balsa. Correct. So we changed our plans a little bit and went up there first.

[00:18:25] Ron took me on some country roads I never knew existed. Every one part, there was just gravel and dirt. No.

[00:18:31] Yes, there was. There are some gravel roads in that general area. I've been on them.

[00:18:35] No, no, no. It was here. So I'm east of Springfield. And instead of going west to Springfield to hit 55 and go north, it takes me through some country roads.

[00:18:47] You went diagonal, didn't you?

[00:18:48] Pretty much. Diagonal. And Reggie was very concerned, I guess. I don't know why. I mean, it's the way I always take from here when I go up there.

[00:18:58] I asked Ron, where are we going? He says, I don't know. I'm just following this.

[00:19:02] Well, yes. I never know where I'm going because I just follow what the directions say on the GPS because I'm directionally challenged. You can ask anybody that knows me and they will tell you that.

[00:19:11] Had this been the Prius, we would probably still be out there.

[00:19:14] We would still be just driving and driving and have no clue where we are.

[00:19:20] Needless to say, we eventually made it some hours later.

[00:19:25] It's a two-hour drive. I mean, we know that.

[00:19:28] I think we were pushing three to four hours.

[00:19:30] We were not.

[00:19:31] Three to four. How would you slept? Exactly. I must have slept for easily an hour and we still wasn't there. You're just never happy. I'm happy. I just, the photos when I'm sleeping, however. I thought I was in a comfortable position. What's the matter? I'm surprised I didn't wake up with a hat, a big red nose, some face paint, and something else or something on the window written pointing toward me. I'm just shocked.

[00:19:57] I was driving, so I didn't have a lot of time. You were on autopilot. I was still driving, so I didn't have a lot of time. I was driving, so I didn't have a lot of time to mess with you. But, yes, I did take your picture. Oh, so you were planning. No. The thought might have crossed my mind. But, anyway, so you were apparently upset that you got your picture taken and posted on Facebook.

[00:20:19] I should have known better because when Crystal got hers done, I should have stayed awake the whole damn time, but I did not.

[00:20:24] I'm going to be honest. I didn't even think about that. Like, the two posts, almost back-to-back that I post, are people riding with me asleep. He's two for two.

[00:20:32] Don't go with him nowhere.

[00:20:33] What's he put through the events in that car?

[00:20:36] I am just that boring, I guess. Like, I am terrible to talk to or something because…

[00:20:41] We were doing fine. It's just once we got along straightaway and everything was fine, and I just kept drifting further and further toward the window and… From that professional truck driver can't stay awake.

[00:20:52] I know. That's scary.

[00:20:53] I'm not normally in the passenger seat. Well, I got nothing to do with my hands. I guess I'm just going to take a nap.

[00:20:58] Oh, no. No. I was comfortable. Your Tesla is very comfortable. I'll give you that.

[00:21:04] Anyway. So, we made a trip to Brian's, huh? It's quiet.

[00:21:08] It is.

[00:21:09] We made a trip to Brian's. In which case, it's always a candy store for grown adults. I know. So, we were there a little bit before Terry, so we had a chance to start walking around and making my pile of stuff.

[00:21:28] I didn't even walk around. I didn't even want to go upstairs. I was too scared to go upstairs. I could just feel my wallet starting to catch on fire, so I stayed downstairs.

[00:21:37] Well, what helped me is knowing that we had my car, which doesn't have a lot of room in it. That helps. So, knowing that even if there was something I really wanted, I wasn't going to be going home with it that day.

[00:21:47] Let's not forget we stopped and ate before we walked in there. Oh, we did.

[00:21:50] Yeah. So. That's a pretty good little eatery across the street from there. That's awesome. It's not very expensive. Thank you for lunch, by the way. I don't think I thanked you yet. No, you felt good. but yeah, so he recently got in a whole bunch of used UMX airplanes, stacks of them.

[00:22:07] Not UMX.

[00:22:08] Yeah. So, we started going through them to see what was actually in there, and we found out that there were a couple boxes that I was excited about that did not have what was advertised on the box inside of them. there was a flying ghost, quadro, or a quadcopter flying ghost. I'm surprised you didn't get that. I thought about it, but I mean, let's be honest. Why? Piper. That's, that was the whole thing that went through my mind. Piper. That was the reason.

[00:22:37] But it didn't have batteries. So, I don't want to put a bunch of money into something silly like that. So, saying that, I guess, if it's still up there next time I go up, I will probably end up buying it.

[00:22:46] I really believe if I would have took my Suburban up there, you would have came back with a lot more.

[00:22:51] No. No, because I could have fit more in the car.

[00:22:54] I think so. Oh, yeah.

[00:22:56] Oh. Oh, yeah. I thought you had the back pretty full. It was pretty full, but it wasn't stuffed. We could have gotten a lot more in there.

[00:23:03] Here, Reggie, hold this.

[00:23:04] Yeah, exactly. Like, it could have sat on your lap. Whatever it was. We would have had plenty of time.

[00:23:10] Somewhere in this pile is Reggie.

[00:23:11] Plenty of room. And then we would have taken pictures of you sleeping on the way home.

[00:23:17] Yeah, okay. There'd be no sleeping with a prop stuck in my jaw.

[00:23:22] I just hit the brakes to where it would just keep stabbing you and stabbing you. Thanks, Ron. Oh, so anyway, so I did buy myself another UMX Radian. I like the one I have, and I guess I'm stupid in that way that I bought another one. I do want to put the little lights on the wingtips and stuff so I can see at night. Not night, but dusk. Because that's a good flyer, and dusk is the best time to fly those. Ended up getting a UMX S2 Cub. It's a nice one. And the UMX Night Vapor.

[00:23:58] Another nice one. Good flying airplane. And I've not seen this one before, so it's a P-40 Warhawk, but it's like a 300 size. So it's not UMX. So it's not UMX, but it's not big. So it's pretty small.

[00:24:13] I'm trying to think if I've ever seen one of those. I want to say yes, but it's been a long time ago.

[00:24:19] Yeah, these are old. Like, we were looking at a lot of the dates on the boxes and stuff, and they're like 2010.

[00:24:24] I haven't seen one in just even a swap meet. It's been a while since I've seen one of those.

[00:24:28] A lot of that stuff wasn't on the market for more than eight, nine months and gone.

[00:24:33] Then they moved on to something else. Just didn't sell well.

[00:24:37] That and the technology changed so much in that time frame that it became dated quickly.

[00:24:43] I mean, yeah.

[00:24:44] Is it brushed or brushless?

[00:24:46] I don't remember. Like, I remember looking at that to see, but I don't remember what it was. I bet it's brushed. I kind of think it is. But, I mean, for what it is, it'll be a good little flyer just for funsies.

[00:24:59] It'd be nice if it could actually bring back a lot of the older stuff, whether it be with the newer technology or the old technology. And give you an option whether or not you want to put what in it, what you want, whatever.

[00:25:09] Oh, they're not going to do that. They're not going to give you the old stuff as an option still. Well, it's not even made anymore.

[00:25:13] Yeah, true. True.

[00:25:14] But it would have been nice if you think about it. Why? Why would you want the old stuff?

[00:25:19] You can fly it the way you used to. Guys that have been flying way longer than we have. So that it barely flew.

[00:35:02] They had one young man up there that was an incredible flyer. Found out he was only, what, 20 years old or something like that? I don't remember his age. I think it was 20, 21 or something like that, what the guy was selling me. But, oh, he was doing some stuff with the Jet that I haven't ever seen done. And some of the low passes when he was coming through with his flaps down, kind of grazing the grass, that was freaking awesome.

[00:35:27] Apparently, when you touch the ground doing that, you have to land and inspect your airplane. Apparently. I did not know that.

[00:35:33] He got away with it the first time or two, but that one time, that guy was out there pretty quick.

[00:35:37] Yeah, because I don't think anybody saw him the first time or two. But anyway, so that's more stuff to learn about what you're supposed to do with… I don't think we'll be trying that….turbines. No. Accidentally, you might. That might not be an accident. I'd end up as an accident. So anyway, what was your favorite airplane? This is going to be a weird one for me.

[00:36:02] To be honest with you, out of all the jets, I really would like to say that guy that had the E-Flight 90mm Viper that he turned into an actual turbine and painted it up. With smoke. With smoke. It was probably the best. It was rock solid in the air, even with a little bit of breeze that was coming through.

[00:36:21] I could not believe how fast that thing was moving still. He was keeping up with everybody.

[00:36:24] I hate to say it, but I think that was probably my favorite one, too. That was the one I found myself being drawn to, like looking at and all that stuff, because it was unexpected. Exactly.

[00:36:34] I think I thought of you when I saw it. I was like, well, this would be something David would probably pull off.

[00:36:39] Oh, you as in Dave. It's hard to see who you is when you're talking on a podcast. I'm sorry, Dave.

[00:36:46] I thought of you, Dave. I thought of Dave when I saw it. He dressed it up pretty nicely. It was black and red, if I remember right. He made his own vinyl cutouts for it. He took basically a $660-some-dollar jet, turned into about almost a $1,400 jet with turbine and gyro and everything you put in that. Sorry. It was more than that.

[00:37:38] Yeah. True. I mean, it's cool. It was awesome. It's a side project. It was awesome. I got to give him credit. But he has done something I haven't seen done. Yeah. Especially with a Viper jet.

[00:37:50] Like I said, it flew well. I really like seeing the smoke. I don't know why. I just think that's kind of cool coming out of the jet like that. Yes. And that was one. So I saw that one flying before I saw it static, on the runway. And it presented in there bigger than I ended up seeing, or than I thought it was. So it looked like a big jet. And I was like, I wonder who makes that? What is it? And then he comes in and lands. I'm like, wait, this thing is, this is tiny.

[00:38:18] He had two other ones laying there that were still the electric versions. Mm-hmm. And he, oh, it was awesome. It was awesome. Outside of that, oh, I'm trying to think. There was a few others there that was actually pretty awesome. But I think we've seen those before.

[00:38:38] And it was a nice show. I have nothing to say. It wasn't a very nice show. And just some of the guys that was out there were doing some pretty nice stuff with them. It was coming through wide open, rolling Harriers and staying in a tight, well, not tight, but a pretty good-sized circle.

[00:38:53] And kept it level the whole time. It was nice.

[00:38:56] Yeah. I'm, it's always impressive watching people that know how to fly, fly.

[00:39:01] Yeah. They know exactly what they're doing, not just hoping for the best when moving sticks.

[00:39:06] And, and I don't know why it took me so long to realize, I don't remember if I've said this before or not, one of the things I like a lot about Eli Field, as opposed to our home field that we fly at, I guess I was going to say more often, but for me it really isn't, the, like if you pay attention to the layout, like when you're flying at Eli Field, all of the, the crops and stuff are low. The open field area is all soybean. What do you mean? Well, it's been corn before.

[00:39:36] And even when it's corn, the corn is lower than what you're flying at. So you're on top of a hill. Pretty much. Like it's, it just looks so much more open, even though you have crops around you, which we do at our other field, but our other field that is at the same height, or same ground level as where the corn is and you, you can't see past it. Nope. So if you go in, you have no clue where you went.

[00:39:58] Whereas as we watch the one gentleman with his jet flame out and go in, you could see exactly where it went.

[00:40:06] Exactly. And when he walked in, it went from being what looked like maybe knee high up to about almost chest high on him.

[00:40:12] Yeah, those were a lot. Yeah, they were taller than I thought the beans were, but still you could walk through and it was not impeding your view of flying. And so when you're flying, you can actually fly far away from you at eye level and just come nicely over those crops and stuff. And you don't have to worry about running into him.

[00:40:33] It's amazing how far out he actually had to go to get that though. Well, yeah, I mean, he was out there a ways and of course trying to carry it back was no joy watching him fall two or three times, but the jet was unscathed. No, it was not unscathed. It was unscathed. There's nothing wrong with the exterior of it other than when the turbine grenaded inside of it.

[00:40:54] Yeah. And then the side of it was melted and bubbly. That's from the turbine. Right. From the toy beans. So that's not unscathed.

[00:41:02] Unscathed from the soybeans.

[00:41:04] Oh, okay. I got what you're saying now. Yes, correct. The rough landing and the… The off-field landing did nothing to it. It was all… Correct. It was all whatever happened from the turbine failure.

[00:41:15] He did a really nice job.

[00:41:17] I have to say. Because once he saw it going down, he gave it some elevator at the last possible second to get to… Yeah, he flared it to slow it down as much as he could. But it was nice. And then they had, of course, they had a couple L-39s there that were kind of big. They had a couple actual Viper jets that were nice big ones, too. Some Migs. Yeah.

[00:41:44] I don't know what the one was. It was the E-Flight. Was it green and white or red and white or whatever it was that sat right in front of us? It was a pretty good size.

[00:42:46] Yeah, they got quite a few going. I think it was doing pretty good. Everybody kept their space. Mm-hmm. Like I said, a couple guys were coming through wide open every time, and they still kept their space. Yeah. They sounded really good, except for the one you were saying, it sounded like something was wrong with it, but…

[00:43:00] No, I was trying to describe the sound. It didn't sound like there was anything wrong with it, but it had a weird hum to it that almost sounded like, when you get a motor that's a little bit out of balance, and it kind of gives you that…

[00:43:12] Yeah. That's kind of what it sounded like. Like, a turbine would not run if it was that far out of balance, but there was something making a noise on it that sounded cool.

[00:43:21] A lot of times, it's just the aerodynamics of the air passing through the ducts, and you get those different screeches and screams.

[00:43:28] Yeah. That could have been it. I don't know.

[00:43:30] Yeah, they all sound great to me. I was definitely enjoying it.

[00:43:33] Not all of them. Really? There are some of them that I've heard. There was none at this meet that I remember hearing, but there's been a couple that are just like ear-piercing, smaller ones especially, that just sound terrible.

[00:47:33] Well, I'm going to be honest. So, I don't know what I had in my mind. Like, to me, five gallons is going to last a long time. Like, that should last me a long time. Then I was on Facebook. I saw one of the guys that was there posted that he went through 45 gallons of fuel just

[00:47:49] In that weekend. 45 gallons of fuel just in that weekend. It's more my expedition carries.

[00:47:58] But not of the oil, just fuel. You're using only how many ounces of that oil toward…

[00:48:04] So, it's one quart of oil from what I remember reading. I will have to verify before I mark it up. Wow. One quart of oil for five gallons.

[00:48:19] Maybe I did the math wrong. Why did I have it with 40 gallons with one? Maybe two gallons is 40. Two gallons of oil was 40 gallons. That's what it was. Because if you buy them, you can't buy a single gallon. You have to buy two gallons at a time. And it's $110, I think, for two gallons.

No. Provide your own battery. Which, like I said, I like that better than the one that came with the battery when I was looking at other companies. Because I would prefer just to be able to throw a lipo in there and be done.

[00:51:40] I've got to get a new cast can. My outboard boat primer is starting to leak. So, I've got to come up with something. I've been dragging that boat primer around for the last 25 years.

[00:51:51] It might be time to upgrade.

[00:51:53] It's just when I look at the big picture of this whole thing, I was thinking, okay, $4,700 is what I'm going to begin. But it's still going.

[00:58:22] Okay, so on the Skywarden, I've got lots of holes to put in it, in the covering, for nuts and bolts and fittings and so forth. And I've been doing this for a long time. But it just came to mind on this one, because there are so many holes I have to open up in the covering. Get yourself a cheap old, or an old soldering iron with a pointy tip on it. Crank it up. You can touch that right in the hole. Melts that covering. Seals it. Don't have to worry about it being pulled off.

[00:58:50] I had, like, a square I had to open up. Just run it around the edge. Seals it right off. Cuts it and seals it at once. Yep. All your screw holes for your landing gear brackets and all that. Just touch the hole and boom, done. Now, this is not a siren iron you want to use for soldering, because you'll have to clean the tip and re-ten it. So I'll be honest, that's what I do.

[00:59:12] I have to clean it every time I do that, but that's okay.

[00:59:16] I use the same soldering iron. I just switch tips.

[00:59:18] That's a good idea. That's a good tip. I get it. Yeah. Switch tips. Anyway. I need to get more tips for mine so I can do that, I guess, because I just use the same one and poke it in.

[00:59:28] Yeah. I don't know how it works, but all that cleaning and re-tenning. Yeah. And I'm really sensitive about that.
