An RC radio system is the communication link between the pilot and the airplane. A reliable setup begins with compatible equipment, careful installation, correct programming, and a range check before flight.
The main components
- Transmitter: The handheld radio that sends stick and switch commands.
- Receiver: The unit in the airplane that sends commands to servos and the ESC or throttle servo.
- Servos: Move the control surfaces and other functions.
- Power system: An ESC/BEC, external BEC, or receiver battery powers the airborne radio equipment.
Channels and controls
A basic airplane typically uses four functions: aileron, elevator, throttle, and rudder. Additional channels can operate flaps, retracts, lights, spoilers, tow releases, or multiple servo surfaces.
Binding the receiver
Binding pairs a compatible receiver with a transmitter. Follow the manufacturer’s sequence, keep the propeller removed on electric models, and confirm that every control responds correctly afterward. Rebinding is not a substitute for fixing power or signal problems.
Receiver and antenna installation
- Mount the receiver securely and protect it from vibration.
- Route antennas as the manufacturer specifies, usually away from batteries, motors, ignition systems, carbon fiber, and heavy wiring.
- Do not sharply bend, cut, coil, or modify antenna tips.
- Secure wiring so connectors cannot work loose or rub against moving parts.
Set a safe failsafe
Failsafe determines what the receiver does if it loses a valid signal. For most powered models, throttle should go to a safe low or off position. Set other controls according to the radio manufacturer and the model’s needs, then test failsafe with the propeller removed.
Range checking
- Inspect the model and verify battery condition.
- Place the transmitter in its reduced-power range-test mode.
- Walk the manufacturer’s specified distance while moving the controls.
- Repeat from different model orientations and with the motor running if the manufacturer recommends it.
- Do not fly if movement becomes intermittent, delayed, or erratic.
Model memory and programming
Confirm the correct model memory before every flight. Check servo direction, channel assignment, end points, rates, expo, mixes, and throttle cut. Use a model-match feature when available, but never rely on it instead of a control-direction check.
Before every flight
- Correct model selected
- Transmitter and receiver batteries healthy
- Antennas undamaged
- Controls move in the correct direction
- Throttle cut works
- Failsafe and range check completed when required
