About Ron

Ron with big airplane
Ron with his 40% Yak 54

Ron is happily married to a wonderful woman and is a father of 2 terrific kids. He likes tinkering with stuff and likes to find out how things work. He built a 5’x10′ CNC machine in his home shop from scratch that he has found many uses for, including making furniture and making rc airplane parts. He started flying radio controlled models in 2012. He likes rc cars and quadcopters, but his main interest is radio controlled airplanes. He bought his first rc airplane on Father’s Day in 2012 when he took his oldest son to the local hobby shop to look around. It didn’t take him long to get the Hobbyzone Super Cub assembled, get the batteries charged, and get his first successful flight under his belt. The weekend after Father’s day, the local rc airplane club was hosting a fly in to raise money for charity. Ron’s entire family went and enjoyed their first experience with the hobby. After seeing all the different airplanes, and the skills of some of the pilots, Ron was hooked. He has learned a lot about building and flying from his friendships with Tom and Dave, along with many other people he’s met over the years. Ron wanted to start this podcast in the hopes of sharing their stories and experiences from the hobby and entertaining the audience while giving useful tips on how to enjoy one of the greatest hobbies on earth!

About Tom

Tom with his P-40

Tom has been an avid rc plane hobbyist since 1978 when he saw his neighbor tinkering with an airplane. Shortly thereafter, he built his first rc plane, a Great Planes Trainer 20. Since then, Tom has seen the hobby evolve from build your own balsa kits to the ready to fly planes that are prominent today. He mostly loves building the old school balsa wood kits. He believes there is nothing more satisfying than bringing the plane to life from a bunch of balsa wood and glue. Because of his decades of experience, Tom has become the “go to” guy for troubleshooting and repairing crashed airplanes! Tom has been married for over 25 years to an absolute saint of a woman who has understood his passion for rc planes. He and his wife have raised three wonderful children. Tom’s other hobbies have included rc cars, collecting vintage rc plane balsa wood kids, and collecting lego.

About Dave

Dave with his ElectroStreak

Dave has been building and flying RC aircraft since 1987, and has flown almost all types of aircraft. He enjoys building, and doesn’t favor balsa over foam. If you can build with it, it will be used. While he prefers scale/semi scale subjects over sport aircraft, that doesn’t keep the stray sport aircraft from venturing into his hangar. Dave worked in a hobby shop for over 17 years, and has since moved on to a career in the medical office field. He has been married for over 32 years.  He lost a leg after a bought with cancer in 2006, but is still going strong. He and his wife have a small craft business specializing in making wooden toys. Other hobbies include: training dogs, and competing in k-9 agility, racing RC cars, collecting and restoring vintage Matchbox cars, and building plastic models.
