Start with Help, Not Just an Airplane

Ron and Tom recommend contacting a local RC flying club before making a large financial commitment. Many clubs have instructors, buddy-box equipment, or a club trainer that lets a newcomer experience the hobby with an experienced pilot nearby. If local help is not available, videos, podcasts, and careful research can help—but a flight simulator should still be near the top of the shopping list.

A simulator lets a student practice orientation, approaches, takeoffs, landings, and recovery without repairing an airplane after every mistake. It is also useful when weather or available time makes a trip to the flying field impractical. The hosts caution that simulator success does not guarantee that a maneuver will work exactly the same way with a real airplane.

Understanding RC Airplane Package Types

RTF (Ready to Fly) packages generally include the airplane, installed electronics, transmitter, and most or all of the equipment needed to get airborne. They normally require only basic assembly and battery charging.

BNF (Bind-N-Fly) airplanes include the installed electronics but require a compatible transmitter. Batteries and chargers may or may not be included.

PNP (Plug-N-Play) airplanes normally include the motor, speed controller, and servos but require the pilot to install a compatible receiver and use their own transmitter.

ARF (Almost Ready to Fly) models require considerably more completion than the name may suggest. The airframe is largely constructed, but the builder generally supplies and installs the radio equipment and power system and may need to glue or hinge major components.

Traditional kits provide wood parts, plans, and instructions, sometimes with selected hardware. They offer the full building experience but are not the quickest or easiest route to a beginner’s first flight.

What Makes a Good First RC Airplane?

For most beginners, the hosts favor an electric, foam, four-channel trainer. Foam airplanes are generally affordable and easy to repair with common field supplies. Electric power avoids the fuel, tuning, and additional operating knowledge associated with nitro and gasoline engines.

Ron recommends looking around the 36- to 42-inch wingspan range because the additional size and weight generally make the airplane easier to see and less easily disturbed by wind than a very small model. Dihedral—the shallow V shape formed by the wings when viewed from the front—also helps a trainer return toward level flight.

They recommend starting with four channels rather than three. A four-channel airplane adds ailerons and lets the student learn the control arrangement commonly used on more advanced models, avoiding the need to relearn rudder-stick habits later.

Stabilization and Training Technology

AS3X uses gyros to reduce the effect of outside disturbances and make an airplane feel smoother. SAFE can add bank-angle limits and self-leveling behavior. Some trainers also offer geofencing or a holding pattern that can give the pilot time to hand the transmitter to an instructor. These systems are valuable training aids, but Ron and Tom encourage pilots to work toward confidently controlling the airplane themselves.

A buddy box connects a student’s transmitter to an instructor’s transmitter. The instructor grants control while the student is flying and can immediately take it back if the airplane gets into trouble. This provides real-airplane experience with a safety net that electronics alone cannot completely replace.

Budget, Equipment, and Safety

A first trainer does not need to be the airplane a pilot owns forever. It may eventually be passed to another beginner, replaced as skills improve, or accumulated enough repairs to retire. That makes a reasonably priced RTF trainer a sensible way to learn whether the hobby is a good fit.

The hosts distinguish between saving money on a first airframe and cutting corners on critical control equipment. Transmitters, receivers, servos, and batteries directly affect control and reliability. Name-brand equipment can fail too, but established manufacturers may provide diagnostics, repairs, warranty service, and useful answers after a problem.

Ron: that happens from time to time it does not a plan but we’ll see how it goes yeah okay on today’s episode we’re going to be talking about rc planes for beginners so let’s talk about what do you need to fly an rc airplane you know there’s a few things you’re going to need obviously you’re

Tom: going to need a transmitter in an airplane probably going to need a place to fly them right depending on the type of airplane you’re going to need a battery a battery charger uh maybe some fuel if you if you choose to go the the gas powered or nitro powered route and probably you know would be really helpful to have somebody to help you uh with the hobby yeah i think that would be a good place for

Ron: people to start actually right reach out to your local your local flying club most of the time a club will actually get you out let you fly an airplane before you make any kind of financial

Tom: commitment right for example our our club we have a dedicated trainer that the club owns and that we use to then introduce people to the hobby so most clubs have something i think similar to that yeah

Ron: because this can be fairly expensive to get into can be doesn’t have to be doesn’t have to be no right but it’s it’s it’s good to kind of dip your toe in the water before you uh you dive in i guess yeah to see if it’s something that you really want to want to try it’s fun once you get started and i think most people that do will kind of be taken by it and want to buy their own airplane and then another airplane right and then another airplane and then another airplane yeah and then another

Tom: right right um so so for everybody listening the the perfect number of airplanes that you should own is actually a formula really yeah and the formula is n plus one whereas n is the number of airplanes that you currently own i like that so that is the perfect number of airplanes yeah because

Ron: oddly enough you can always find room for another one yeah it’s weird how that works but but yeah

Tom: someone someone to help them in the hobby i think is uh is definitely a uh an instrument for success

Ron: yeah and you can do it you know you can get started on your own if you don’t have a club around you can um there’s a lot of good youtube videos on how to get started um there’s a lot of good podcasts out there well at least one good one that we know of i hope you’re talking about this of course i am okay good shameless plug but no like seriously though if you can talk to somebody local i would recommend doing that first if you can’t do some research you know kind of look up how to fly

Tom: right uh buy a simulator oh gosh yes i mean i’m glad you said that because i was i was hoping we were going to get to that soon because uh as some of you know us know um simulators when you crash are really cheap to repair yeah you just hit reset and you go again like magic yeah so i actually bought

Ron: a simulator after i bought an airplane okay and had a couple flights on under my belt before i bought the simulator and it it made uh it made learning much much quicker much easier and much cheaper much

Tom: cheaper yes so i i i would recommend doing that first when i when i was working you know back in the hobby shop part-time uh there was many times where i would actually recommend uh buying a simulator to customers before they bought their first airplane yeah well number one i mean it’s great entertainment i mean regardless of what the simulator costs i mean even if it’s 100 bucks or whatever it’s great entertainment you know on a rainy day when you can’t fly or can’t really do anything outside you fire up a simulator and learn a new skill yeah uh so yeah simulators are definite definite plus

Ron: yeah i actually the first time i went in to buy an airplane the gentleman that owned the hobby shop had a a nitro plane hanging up and that’s what i wanted first and he told me buy this uh rtf kit and get yourself comfortable with that and then come back and see me in a couple months and we’ll get you something different which is what i did but before i bought the the nitro plane i ended up buying a simulator to practice up first yeah um i noticed i said rtf some people might not know what that means so why don’t we let’s cover a few terms okay let’s start with rtf would you like to uh define

Tom: it for me sure uh so rtf means ready to fly uh and generally speaking it’s it’s just like the name uh suggests you uh you buy a box uh with an airplane in it and it has everything in the box to make it ready to fly uh that means uh it has the transmitter has the airplane has all that other stuff that we said you might need to go flying already in the box uh you you know put a few things together really really quick assembly charge up some batteries and you go fly yeah normally

Ron: it’s a couple hours put it together right uh put the tail on put the wings on usually some decals charge a battery sometimes you have to bind sometimes you don’t i think it depends you probably do it’s probably a good idea to rebind anyway but the instruction manuals are usually really

Tom: really good about yeah that’s like a step step step by step what to do so um but that’s an rtf so what about an arf or an arf so that is an almost ready to fly it’s a bit of a misnomer uh so it’s it’s it’s kind of almost ready to fly it’s uh most of the construction has been done for you uh so there’s some minor assembly usually required that requires glue usually you know gluing wing halves together uh gluing the tail together hinging the control surfaces gluing them on things like that uh and usually some bolt-on type stuff you bolt the landing gear on or the motor or what have you um but generally speaking an arf will not include any electronics uh and more often than not it won’t include any kind of power source either electric or nitro or gas okay what about uh you might see bnf

Ron: on a box at the hobby shop what does that mean yeah bind and fly that’s what that stands for and

Tom: that means everything in the box is usually kind of included uh including the electronics uh that you will then bind to your existing transmitter so that sort of implies that you already own a compatible transmitter with that particular platform and so servos are installed already on

Ron: those or okay so it’s pretty much ready to go it’s pretty much a ready to fly minus your

Tom: transmitter minus your transmitter and sometimes they come with the batteries and chargers if they’re smaller airplanes and if they’re larger airplanes they usually probably don’t come with that or maybe they’re available with that you just have to check what’s on the you know on the end of the box to see what’s included but okay almost almost a ready to fly minus the transmitter okay what about a pnp a pnp stands for plug and play and it is basically like a ready to fly minus your receiver so this implies that you already have a radio system of your own transmitter and receiver that you then take your receiver that you already own and you plug it into the airplane and then it becomes

Ron: a ready to fly so with the pnp it doesn’t matter what kind of radio system you have as long as you have a receiver you can plug it in and you’re good to go generally speaking that’s correct okay so for the next one we don’t see very often anymore what about my favorite yeah what about a kit

Tom: yeah so a kit is basically just a box of wood right uh generally speaking it was a box of wood uh sometimes those you know parts were die cut sometimes they were pre-machine cut and sanded but they were wooden parts that you glued together to make an airplane that you then covered with a covering of some kind and um yeah no electronics or anything like that it was just literally a box of wood uh a set of plans and an instruction manual well and sometimes it would include uh like maybe

Ron: push rods or landing gear if that’s made of metal sometimes right right yeah uh or wire sometimes

Tom: there was uh there was a sometimes a hardware packet in the kit that would include like landing gear wire or push rods like you said or uh engine mounts things or a cowl or a cowl might have

Ron: might have some yeah pre-formed parts in there also yeah yeah that uh that’s the way i that’s

Tom: the way i got in and i don’t regret doing it that way at all yeah it’s good to build i enjoy building

Ron: but i i don’t know if i’d want to start out that way right well i mean and the stuff that’s out there

Tom: today is is super super convenient and you can get flying so quickly now it just it still amazes me even to this day you know from where i came from you know the the options that people have now to get in the

Ron: hobby are almost endless well not only that but there’s a lot of uh uh technologies out that help you fly um also if you’re in the hobby shop looking at airplanes you might see something on the box

Tom: that says as3x yeah uh as3x is a is an uh i active stability on three axis thank you yeah i always get the get the acronym uh messed up but basically what it is it’s a receiver with three gyros in it that sort of correct automatically without any pilot input um flight conditions so it makes for a smoother flying airplane and easier to fly airplane and it is a tool that uh that helps people learn to fly that i think along with some of these other technologies that we’ll eventually get to

Ron: um could also be a crutch yeah as long as you’re using it right it’s it’s not made to be flown with forever you know it’s made to be a training aid right normally right and normally there’s three modes on it i think right most of the time so you’ll have one where it’s got full control over the airplane you’re telling it what to do but it’s not going to let you roll it’s not going to let you go you know climb too high it’s not gonna let you dive too fast right um second mode is going to give you a little bit more freedom but it’s still going to kind of be there in case something happens it’s gonna uh it will help with wind and and all that it’ll keep you level when you’re supposed to be flying level and then you can turn it off completely and that’s when you’re actually flying the airplane right uh which is what your your goal should be right your goal your goal should be to be the pilot in command right yeah you don’t pilot in command you can use you can use those for help right when you’re learning but once you’re past that you you shouldn’t necessarily need to be using that at all exactly and it’s the same with the the safe technology that’s on some of these other ones

Tom: right which is yeah that’s another that’s another um auto sort of correcting technology and i think they’ve even taken it i haven’t explored it fully but i think they’ve they’ve taken the safe technology now to where i think when it’s on its full control i think it will like only let you even bank just like 15 degrees or i’m like it it’s amazing how much control these things can actually take away

Ron: from a pilot yeah there’s actually some out now two trainers and such that will have a geofence which is just an invisible boundary and if it goes too far away it will come fly back to you yeah you can even you can even like for people learning to fly if you don’t have the buddy box system with that plane you can actually push a button and it will just sit there and fly in circles on its own so you can hand it over to somebody else you know if you’re diving or something like that it will actually go into level flight and just fly in circles until you can hand the transmitter over to somebody else to

Tom: to fix it for you that’s oh and for anybody listening a buddy box is a a system that we use um experienced pilots use to train new pilots where we we actually tie sort of two transmitters together electronically via accord or or new ones are wireless even yeah bluetooth um and we can take control of the airframe or the airplane whenever the student gets in trouble that’s a

Ron: buddy box yeah so you push a button you know when you’re the one when you’re the the trainer um you push a button and then that gives the other person control you have to hold the button down the whole time or else uh you get control back so they have control when you have the button pushed down and you let go if they get in trouble you can just let go and take over and that way you don’t uh have any

Tom: bad endings yep yep yeah so i mean um did you want to you know maybe maybe touch on the different types

Ron: of construction yeah so biggest differences you’re going to see is foam and like a built-up model which is usually uh balsa right a wooden type model my favorite mine too for for getting in though i think

Tom: you ought to look for a good ready to fly kit made of foam yeah and and you know i’m i’m the old guy in the room uh old school guy loves kits loves wooden airplanes and even well i do too even with all of that and and coming in the hobby how i got in the hobby you know many many years ago building my first airplane and such even today i it’s hard for me not to recommend you know kind of what you’re talking

Ron: about well it’s just so much easier yeah uh it’s so much cheaper cheaper that’s really that’s the thing and when you get the wooden built-up kits you don’t get the the stability control the as3x the safe technology you know those are those are made for beginners right and most of the time beginners just

Tom: start with foam airplanes and there’s there’s lots of options out there with with the foam

Ron: oh yeah and they change yearly they do it’s hard to keep up with what’s new and what’s good you know

Tom: technology moves so fast i agree i got online the other day uh just to do a quick kind of search because i knew we were going to talk about this and uh man the options that are out there just it’s staggering yeah it’s hard it’s honestly there are so many options out there without somebody you know giving you their recommendations it’s actually kind of i would think for for a newcomer to the hobby would be almost intimidating yeah would you would you say would you have a uh like a recommended size airplane that you would recommend to to somebody just getting in see i i prefer going a little bit

Ron: bigger i know they have some small 12 even 24 inch wingspan but to me 36 to 42 is a good wingspan yeah uh it handles the wind better right you’re gonna have a little bit of weight to it so it’s going to fly a little bit better um i think more important than size though is going to be wing configuration most of your your trainers will have dihedral built in right uh for those that

Tom: don’t know what dihedral is if you want to tell us yeah sure uh so a dihedral is the it basically if you if you look at the the leading edge of the wing you know head-on you’re looking right at the wing dihedral is a reference to the angle that the wing makes towards the center so if you can imagine you take half the wing lay it flat on a table and the opposite wing tip is probably going to have some sort of gap under it under a flat surface if that makes sense yeah so if you’re looking at it it’s going to be a very shallow v exactly exactly and generally speaking the more um the more dihedral or the more v-ish the shape generally speaking the more stable the airplane itself is yeah and that

Ron: so the reason for that is when a when a wing is flat it creates more lift than when it’s not flat so it’s going to level itself out as that is that one wing you know when you’re banking in a turn is that one wing is is uh more level with the horizon it’s going to create more lift than the wing that’s kind of up in the air and so they will kind of equalize themselves out in order to fly um straight

Tom: and level yeah so i’d say that’s a fairly accurate easy description yeah yeah i mean there’s a lot of there’s a lot of other factors you know well on aerodynamic factors things like that but yeah that generally speaking yeah um if you can imagine a flat uh wing gliding through the air just a completely flat one it’s going to produce the most lift when it’s kind of horizontal to the surface in the vertical axis right that makes sense yeah yeah without getting into it too much so

Ron: exactly without the dihedral you know when you’re flying at 30 degrees or whatever you’re going to stay at that angle it’s not going to be self-correcting right exactly which is what makes it so much easier for a beginner when you have that dihedral built in because you don’t have to worry as much

Tom: about what angle you’re at and um i could be wrong but most of the most of the airplanes i looked at online the other day when i was looking uh most of those you know they all had a fair amount of dihedral yeah trainers that are designed to get people in the hobby are gonna have a lot of that

Ron: yeah trainers do yeah and that’s i mean that’s just easy for somebody to get started with without

Tom: having to worry too much about their attitude in the air right what would you say to uh newcomers about airplanes that really look cool and look like airplanes i would say those are

Ron: awesome but don’t begin with them yeah yeah i mean trainers are made as trainers for a reason you know they’re made to fly well they’re made to be forgiving they’re made to be easy and quick to get in the air um they don’t necessarily look like well i shouldn’t say that it’s possible they don’t look like real airplanes they won’t look like a cessna they won’t look like you know a jet fighter or even an old uh like world war ii bomb or anything like that right and the reason is those are harder to fly yeah generally speaking they are yeah so stick with the trainer that’s what it’s made for exactly you know save that for your third or fourth or fifth plane you know that’s when you can kind of get into what what kind of airplane uh when you that’s when you can buy what you like

Tom: the looks of right yeah so so you’re talking about dihedral and and you know usually scale or real looking airplanes that you would see out on a you know on air on a ramp somewhere are going to be lacking that that dihedral uh function that you were talking about um i think dihedral also plays into to one of these other topics we wanted to cover um about how many channels would you would you say

Ron: um you should begin with yeah i’d skip right past the three channel and go to four channel yeah why is that well so my first plane was a three channel i i happen to agree by the way but yeah explain that yeah so my first plane was the three channel it had a lot of dihedral built in the wing it was self-riding because of the wing but it did not have ailerons right so that’s all you know it flew well sure you can get three channels that fly okay but the difference between that is when you’re going to a four channel your your rudder control changes hands so i’m gonna pause that

Tom: for just a second i’m sure for our listeners i’m gonna channels we’re referring to the number of functions that the airplane can uh accept from the transmitter yeah it’s how many separate lines of

Ron: communication there are between the receiver and the transmitter so a three channel has what three

Tom: channels then three channel has your throttle right has your elevator and has your rudder and then so a fourth channel adds what ailerons which those are the ones that are on the wing correct that’s what controls your role controls the role about the longitudinal yeah right um yeah i just wanted to make a quick note of that because there is a difference yeah three channel versus four channel so you know usually uh when when new folks come into the hobby and if they really do enjoy it and they have a successful entry let’s say into the hobby they’re going to graduate to a four channel or more airplane right yeah so yeah i think i think you and i think pretty much along the same lines here just just go ahead and avoid the three channel type airplanes right off the bat yeah because you don’t

Ron: learn bad habits like i said switching the the rudder from thumb to thumb is something that you don’t want to have to relearn when you’re going from a three channel to a four channel it just makes it more difficult taxing on the ground it makes it more difficult when you’re trying to take off just stick with the four channel begin with and you’ll be fine right so yeah so we we kind of covered

Tom: the the you know the construction you know different types of airplanes things like that um you know one thing maybe we could we could talk about is the the difficulty should the need arise to repair an airplane and there’s different types of repair techniques for different types of airplanes um i’ll say that uh you know repairing a wood airplane is going to be more time consuming and uh if it can

Ron: be repaired yeah it’s going to be much more difficult um foam is nice because usually you can tape it usually you can throw some popsicle sticks on it maybe some uh some bamboo skewers just kind of get it put back together and you’re flying again when foam breaks it’s not difficult to rig it up and make it fly right whereas that’s not something you’re going to do with a covered up wood airplane right well and

Tom: then you’ve got you know on a balsa airplane or a wood construction airplane you’ve got the like you mentioned that the covering that is also then going to need patched even after your perform the repair so that adds a whole another level of complexity so the foam airplanes are great for beginners because should the need arise they are much easier to repair yeah like i said if you take some tape with

Ron: you take some skewers and stuff you most of the time will be able to just kind of put it back together and get back up flying um really the extra weight that glue adds and tape adds is not going to make any difference to how it flies when you’re first getting into it so right you know you’re fine just taking stuff like that for a hard landing right if you crash anything too much you know you’re not going to be able to fix it whether it’s wood or foam right which which kind of which kind of ties

Tom: into my the thing i’d like to talk about next you know how much should somebody spend on their first airplane i mean if you crash it to the point where you can’t repair it hopefully you’re not out a whole lot of money so how much should somebody expect to pay or could they expect to pay depending on how

Ron: they choose to get in the hobby yeah so there’s a lot of different uh manufacturers out there that that make radio equipment when you buy uh like an rtf kit like okay so the first rtf kit that i bought or airplane that i bought i have nothing left of it the airplane like i said it flew well sure but it outlived its purpose right now i wasn’t gonna fly a three channel and there was no reason because i after buying it i knew i wouldn’t recommend anybody else start off with one so i didn’t want to give anybody else the bad habits by learning how to use it also the transmitters that come with them don’t always come with full-fledged transmitters and i was going to

Tom: say that generally speaking even if you had started with a with a let’s just call it a foamy four channel airplane as a beginner even even if you had started that way chances are if you stay in the hobby eventually you’re not going to own that airplane anymore either because you’ve passed it on to maybe somebody else to get into the hobby or you’ve crashed it to the point where you don’t want to repair it anymore right where you’ve outgrown the um the transmitter yeah the transmitter so i i would say even even had they started with a four channel foamy eventually you’re

Ron: going to outgrow it right and you’re going to want something else so you’re going to want like a modern computer type radio to where you can have multiple models on it uh we both fly dx8s which are actually outdated they’re a little older but they still work they yeah they hold what 30 models i think something like that yeah so as long as you don’t have 30 airplanes right i think

Tom: you can hold more if you’ve got the cool little oh that yeah you’re right you can put an sd card in

Ron: there but i’m not either way i’m not quite there yet i think i’m at what 22 slots filled or something

Tom: like that i so yeah i mine’s full but i have a lot of profiles in there that are of you know club members you know when i’m right helping them fly their airplanes or whatever so yeah mine’s full and but i mean i have the sd card that i can you know but yeah like you said you’ll you’ll outgrow the the the airframe and um and the transmitter that comes with it usually so but i mean getting back to the cost

Ron: that’s such a you can spend as much as you want to spend i mean you can you can you can go into it and and get cheaper equipment and they usually work just fine um most of the time you’re not going to have that for the long run so you know start off really as cheap as you can go if you want to just if you’re not going to go fly with somebody to field you know get your own airplane try it just try it out see if you like it i would still go with something in the 36 to 42 inch wing spanish just because that like i said flies better than the small one right they fly very well you can get they get a little twitchy when you get down to that like 12 18 24 inch wingspan they don’t fly nearly as

Tom: well they’re a lot lighter they’re affected by wind yeah yeah i was going to say uh the the bigger airplanes um and by bigger i mean the ones you’re talking about you know 36 to 42 inch or so uh they’re a little bit heavier so they’re not as they don’t get thrown around like a smaller airplane does yeah and

Ron: just like you said yeah it flies a lot better and the other thing too though if you do decide to go that route and not fly at a field uh like an ama sanctioned field be very careful where you fly uh don’t fly over people don’t fly around people you know just make sure you’re not uh being a bad steward to the hobby right you know don’t give everybody else a bad name because a lot of people overlook that yeah you know don’t get permission before you fly somewhere don’t assume that you can go to your local church and just fly out of their parking lot or you know the local walmart or even

Tom: parks and you’ll find most most places uh you know i can’t generalize but uh most places that i have ever asked you know to fly a little electric airplane in the parking lot or whatever have never had a problem with that yeah but it’s always better to ask it it’s definitely better to ask

Ron: and you should absolutely yeah especially if it’s not your property you know exactly you just kind of have to make sure that they’re okay you’re trespassing yeah that’s true i mean and you know just remember these these are toys but they can hurt you sure they can you have to be careful the propeller spins very fast you know it can cut you it can it can be it can cause harm not only to you

Tom: but to property so i mean even these even these uh smaller foamy trainers that are let’s say 32 inch wingspans you know they weigh what a couple of pounds three pounds let’s say you know something like that traveling at 40 mile an hour you know hits something it could definitely do do some damage

Ron: yeah it can don’t want that break a window dent a car yeah yeah there’s just a lot of stuff that you have to be careful with right um but yeah as long as you’re careful you know know where you’re flying

Tom: get a good trainer airplane get something that uh they can grow with you a little bit yeah but just don’t expect to have it forever i don’t think right and that’s i think that’s a i think that’s a uh a fair trade-off you know for for learning you know because you know i suppose there’s somebody out there that will will try the hobby you know and they’ll do it you know the right way and they’ll they’ll have the right equipment and they’ll have help from a friend or an experienced pilot and they’ll decide

Ron: they don’t like it i can’t imagine anybody coming to that conclusion yeah but it could happen sure and

Tom: better to have gone in and spent the minimum amount possible to determine that yeah get in cheap but that’s a that’s a cheap um a cheap price or a fair trade-off if you ask me you know should you decide to continue in the hobby because you did it the right way yeah and then you know if you go spend

Ron: a bunch of money on your first airplane and you crash it you’re going to be upset and you’re really going to be um most of the time you’re not going to want to go back right you’re going to take some time to kind of think about what did i do right how much did i just waste yeah you know how much

Tom: money just did i throw to throw away because i it’s easy to to go you know to think those things you know upon your first crash yeah but i’ll say that uh every time i’ve crashed on a simulator i’ve

Ron: never had that thought no strange and you can fly a lot of different airplanes on a simulator yeah

Tom: yeah learn a lot of different tricks too yeah i do want to say one more thing you mentioned just a little bit ago um that you could go cheap on the equipment i just want to i just want to make a quick comment about going cheap on equipment i’ve learned this lesson unfortunately more than i care to admit um you get what you pay for i’m going to say that so yes there are um places out there that you can order stuff uh for instance i’m going to say i’m not just going to say electronics let’s say eventually if you decide to stay in the hobby you’re going to want more airplanes because remember like i said the perfect number of airplanes and plus one plus one so the more airplanes you have the more electronics you’re going to need you’re you’re going to need servos and a receiver and batteries for each airplane you don’t want to have three airplanes and only one set of electronics for each one or for one and then be switching it you know that’s just no fun and time consuming right sometimes you know the way we install the electronics that’s just not feasible so you’ll want electronics for each airplane and like you said you know there’s cheap equipment out there um but don’t please don’t skimp on the control uh portions of your electronics for instance the receiver uh transmitter servos these days i mean let’s be honest depending

Ron: they’re all made kind of in the little nine gram ones that you get for three bucks a piece

Tom: i fly with those on smaller airplanes i’ve never had a problem i do too but i have had problems with with the uh chinese knockoff i’ll just say it uh receivers i’ve had a couple of them you know cause some some nicer airplanes uh to meet their demise and i just i want other people to learn from sort of not that it was a mistake but my lesson that i learned uh don’t skimp please don’t skimp on

Ron: the on the receivers especially my only thing with that and i i know the receiver brand you’re talking about and i’m not gonna i’m not gonna name it right um because i have flown with them also right and they have been great for me right i’ve never had a problem with one of those name brand ones i have had a problem with i have lost at least one maybe two planes that had the name brand receiver and i had the same problems with those that you had with the knockoff brand no kidding so i mean it does happen i guess yeah um that’s that’s the unfortunate part of flying like if i crash because i did something i’m okay with that because i can learn from it yeah if i crash because i lose signal if i crash because a servo locks up if i crash because any other reason that’s not in my control then that’s when i i really

Tom: get discouraged and have a have issues yeah well that’s understandable um but uh okay well i mean i guess if there’s an upside to to that whole debate um at least a if there is an upside at least because there’s never an upside to crashing an airplane no um but if there is an upside to owning name brand equipment that fails at least you know you have some sort of factory support usually fairly close by because they’re all located in champagne you know the headquarters for most of them are in champagne and and the customer service that’s where they run out of even if the product comes from somewhere else yeah um at least you have that’s illinois right yeah at least you have that right so you know these other ones that uh the ones that i’m talking about um that we won’t name uh there there is no there is really no support like even even in in in my example i called the place where i bought it and their answer was uh basically sorry yeah i mean in that when it was a translation from

Ron: another language that i got okay well then say i’ve never called a place and had uh because of an issue like that what what what should i have done then when i lost an airplane because of um a name brand

Tom: sure yeah a failure well i mean first of all i mean if you can not now we’re hopefully a beginner will never have to we’ll never have to deal with this yeah we’re probably getting off topic but i’m i’m curious so enlighten me please but yeah um in your troubleshooting post crash or post incident we’ll say uh if in your troubleshooting you have have definitely narrowed it down like you’ve you’ve taken your servos and plugged them into another system and all the servos are perfect and the battery pack you you hook it onto your uh voltage your volt meter or your your load meter what what have you and it checks good if you can ultimately narrow it down to the transmitter or receiver then me personally i’m calling the company and saying hey listen i had this issue um everything you know i’ve flown this system before no problems usually it’s been my experience they’re i’ll just go ahead and say uh horizon customer service in this case were very very helpful to me uh and they they offered to hey send us the stuff we’ll uh you know we’ll run it through our diagnostics whether they did or not who knows but they at least they offered and and i went ahead and i did that this has been you know a few years ago but i sent them my dx8 and i sent them the receiver that had failed or at least that i thought had failed and the two satellites that were in it or were with it and they had it for i mean it was really quick turnaround i think it was like a week and a half i had it back in two weeks and uh i had a brand new receiver and three new brand new remotes and they said that they ran a diagnostic on the transmitter and the transmitter was fine and then they also told me what was wrong with the original receiver wasn’t kind of recovered under warranty because unfortunately it was a voltage spike that this is what they attributed it to but at least at least i got something back and i got an answer yeah and someone willing to help when you

Ron: say remotes for those that don’t know because that might be this is a beginner episode so right so uh

Tom: some of the some of the if you stay in the hobby some of your more complex airplanes will have a more complex control system so uh spectrum in this case uh it was a uh i think it was an ar8000 i think it’s forgive me i don’t know for exactly what the model number was but anyway it was a receiver and it used two what we call satellite receivers so spectrum you know they use really really short so satellite receivers the same as remotes when you say it that way i’m sorry yeah yeah satellite and remote are kind of uh interchangeable terms when it comes to radio equipment and airplanes uh but anyway this one had two satellite receivers and they use these so that we can plug them into different or route them into different areas of the airframe to get a maximum exposure to the signal from the transmitter so they’ll use a main receiver and then there’ll be two remote or satellite receivers that you know plug into the receiver and you stretch them out into the airframe so they can get a better look at the

Ron: signal from the transmitter and normally you face those different different directions uh so pretty much it’s just a different antenna like more antenna coverage is what they’re going for in the airplane yep easy to think of it that way yeah yeah so okay but anyway that i just wanted to touch on the on

Tom: the cheap equipment it is out there and um even though we have differing opinions i i would say that even even if you’ve had trouble with domestic you know real i don’t want to say real but the name brand stuff um at least you do have that customer service that you can call yeah if you have an issue whereas

Ron: the other stuff one and done kind of a thing and you’re right i forgot i did send in i had some uh high dollar servos and i sent a bunch of them back to them and they rebuilt them for me no charge and you’re i think it might have been a month uh i did it in the winter time so it really didn’t matter that much but i had i think i sent in eight servos or something like that they they went through them all and cleaned them and and fixed anything that would have been wrong with them that way i knew when you’ve installed them you know when it was time for the next season of flying that they were not going to give me any issues yeah so that you’re right that’s something that’s nice too and i think if they’re out of warranty they they charge you for that but under warranty i didn’t get charged anything yeah they even covered shipment back something we really didn’t cover yet um electric

Tom: versus nitro versus gas do we want to kind of just go over that real quick i would stick with electric yeah and i have to agree with uh with the the quality of of stuff that’s out there and the cost it just makes sense it’s easy it’s inexpensive there’s a very small learning curve right you know you turn it on maybe you have to make an adjustment in the transmitter but the instructions tell you how yeah and then you’re ready to go um nitro uh used to be my go-to you know for for getting new folks into the hobby um but it’s expensive you know because you have to buy the fuel and then 30 bucks a gallon or so there’s a definite learning curve you have to know how or know somebody that knows how to tune them you know because they usually you know they require kind of constant attention you know they tune changes with weather or things like that and then the gasoline powered airplanes those are usually bigger airplanes that a beginner just i don’t want to say out of their price range but

Ron: yeah even if it’s in their price range i wouldn’t start with anything like that yeah yeah you’re better off like i said i think you’re better off sticking with an inexpensive electric just to get into it make your mistakes on that one and then you know as you learn more you can get into nitro you can get into gas they all have their pros and cons to them um so just stick with inexpensive first you know get into it more learn some more um and if you ever if you’re ever out and you’re getting ready to fly if you have any issues whatsoever if you see anything that’s wrong if there’s anything that makes you go like you know what i don’t know about that just don’t go home and fly your simulator yeah that you purchased first figure out what’s going wrong you know if if anything is off just do not fly yeah so so many times we’ve

Tom: we’ve seen friends uh pile in an airplane just because that something wasn’t right yeah that if you

Ron: would have done a good pre-flight check you would have noticed in you know a couple seconds that

Tom: something was off right let’s figure it out yeah we’ll talk about pre-flights and you know in another episode at some time but yeah uh so many so many crashes can be avoided by just using sound judgment

Ron: yeah and and don’t be too excited to do something if something is off right that sort of ties into this

Tom: next thing i want to talk about um just because you can do something we’re talking about the simulator you know using your judgment just because you can do something cool on the simulator it doesn’t necessarily translate to the you know the real airplane yeah i’ve i’ve lost airplanes

Ron: because of that uh really airplane one airplane shouldn’t say airplanes i’ve lost one airplane because of that um i would love to hear that story well the the long story the long story short of that one practice on the simulator doing flat spins worked perfectly on the simulator you know i had it down i could easily go up get into one get out of one pull out of it and come land next day i went out to the field with uh my little nitro katana and got it into a flat spin it wasn’t as flat as i would like it on the on the simulator but got it into a flat spin and it did not recover at all the way it did on the on the uh on the simulator which is to say that it did not recover at all it lawn darted right you know like head first straight down into it it split it into uh it was it was not pretty uh i will say however right i went home that night i put it back together you did and went out the next day and flew it uh and it crashed and that was one that getting back to what we were talking about before that one bothered me more than the first one because it was not something that i you know i had done right i mean i guess technically it was my fault because i didn’t recharge the battery but i would expect to be able to get more than you know 10 minutes flight out of a out of receiver or out of a receiver battery so once again if i had done a plea or a pre-flight check on that i would have probably noticed that the battery the cells were not up to up to snuff so yeah pre-flight yeah if there’s anything wrong we’ll we’ll cover a proper yeah we will pre-flight in another episode yeah but because it’s important oh very important so yeah if you see anything wrong like i said just don’t don’t fly right yeah so reach out to us you know if you have show ideas questions anything like that yeah my email address is ron at rcplanelab.com and and

RC Plane Projects and a Ford Trimotor Scratch Build – Episode 2

Ron: Hello everyone and welcome to the RC Plane Lab podcast. I'm Ron.

Tom: Hi, I'm Tom.

Ron: So what we wanted to do was actually start releasing episodes early. Our plan originally was April 7th was going to be our launch date. However, due to the coronavirus, everything is kind of getting closed down. So we wanted to give all the folks at home something to listen to, some new episodes. So we are going to be releasing now on a weekly basis. Um, our first episode that we planned on releasing on the 7th is going to be released today also. So today you'll actually get two episodes. Um, so this episode is kind of just BS talking. We're not going to really get into anything too, uh, too planned or too serious. So my wife and kids are home now. Um, our state has pretty much closed down. Um, as of today, uh, we live in Illinois. Illinois, our governor has closed, uh, pretty much all non-essential businesses and has enforced a, uh, what's it called Tom? Like a, a stay at home.

Tom: Uh, yeah. Shelter in place.

Ron: Yeah. Shelter in place, uh, for all of the, the residents of Illinois. So due to that, uh, like I said, my wife and kids are at home. School has been canceled at least till April 7th is when they're saying, uh, it is the, the end of this unless they extend it. So, uh, I will still be going to work because, uh, well, so they say those, so yeah, the business I'm in is considered essential. So I, I, uh, I won't have as much time at home as, uh, as Tom does. He will be working from home. Um, but with everything that's being closed, it kind of clears up our evenings. It clears up our weekends where we don't have as much, uh, as much going on really. So we figured we'd do a few more extra podcasts if we could kind of throw some in here and there, just kind of give you updates on what we're doing, what we're working on, on our time off. Um, with my wife being home, uh, she is, you know, she's a wonderful woman and she, she's going to be doing the things that, uh, you know, she's going to get things done that she's been wanting to do. Um, and that will also free up some time for me to do things that I wanted to do. So I will have more time, like I said, for working on RC planes for doing this podcast. Um, and so we, we just wanted to kind of give back, give you guys something to listen to while you're hopefully working on your, uh, RC airplanes, building your kits, building your ARFs or, you know, doing whatever you're, you're working on.

Tom: Right. A little backwards points.

Ron: Yeah. So just something to, uh, to, you know, hopefully help get everybody through this. So you, you got to take the good with the bad. Ron: Okay, everybody, welcome back. So let's talk about things we're going to be doing in our downtime. Uh, things that we plan on accomplishing things that we, uh, we want to get done that we haven't had the chance to get done lately. So Tom, what, what have you been working on?

Tom: Well, I've been working on this, uh, Horton HO229 project that, uh, you know, we mentioned before. Uh, also probably going to try to maybe finish up some other projects that I've had started for a long time.

Ron: Uh, Sopwith Camel and a few other things.

Tom: Um, hopefully if time allows and, um, we can get together, I can finish the stick and, um, get a lot of these projects done. And hopefully, uh, with the time that we're going to have off.

Ron: Yeah. Yeah. That'll, that'll be a good thing to kind of reset. And, you know, I'm looking forward to spending more time with family and that kind of stuff too. It's not all going to be RC airplane stuff. Really? Uh, a lot of it will be.

Tom: Oh, mine's going to all be RC.

Ron: Well, yeah, I know. Well, I still have young kids. So, you know.

Tom: Well, my wife is essential where she works, so I'm kind of home alone. Um, so, I mean, once the chores are done with the house, I have nothing left but to work on airplane.

Ron: You're lucky. That's awesome.

Tom: Yes, I am.

Ron: But, so, yeah, I've, uh, I've been working on the, uh, the senior telemaster. I, uh, I got stuff done on it. I got the elevator covered and, uh, installed. So, the, um, it's been glued on with the, uh, with the hinges and all that. So, it's on. Um, I went to put the rudder on, though. So, okay. And we took that airplane apart. I really did not like the shape of the rudder. Right. Like, for some reason, I, I, I'm a big fan of the, the Cavalier rudder. You know, it's got that nice rounded, rounded rudder on it. It's not just like a stick of balsa that looked like it was thrown on the back.

Tom: Yeah.

Ron: So, I, uh, I did make a new rudder for this one. And I didn't think, I guess, when I first did it about how the tail wheel would connect to it. So, when I went to put it on, uh, it wasn't low enough. So, I had it all covered, ready to go on, didn't fit right. So, I had to take all the covering off. And I, I added another, oh, I don't know, three-eighths of an inch or so to the bottom of it. That way, I could get the tail wheel on. So, I did get that redone. I got that recovered.

Tom: Well, you needed room for the, for the control horn, too, right? Correct.

Ron: Yeah. Yeah, because I really wanted to be able to run that underneath the stabilizer as opposed to over it. I just think it looks better if you don't see it as much when it's sitting on the ground. Okay. So, that will allow me to, uh, to do it that way also. So, I can run it underneath and kind of hide it. So, um, yeah, we threw those, uh, the servos in the tail so it's as far back as we could get them just because the, the engine that's going on there is pretty heavy. And I wanted to have, uh, a better chance of getting it bounced without using extra weights. So, yeah.

Tom: It's always better when you don't have to add weight.

Ron: Yeah. So, that's about where I, I stand on that one. Um, I have the engine mounts on, so they're ready to have the engine installed. Actually, the engine that I'm putting on there, I'm going to switch it over to, uh, to be a gas airplane. And actually, the motor I'm putting on is a 30cc, uh, Ryobi, actually, that, uh, you converted from, uh, what did it come off of?

Tom: Uh, yeah. So, it's a, it's a Ryobi. Uh, it was a weed eater at one time. Weed eater. Okay. Yep.

Ron: And, uh, so, like, when it, when it comes to doing that, I've never converted one from, obviously, weed eater or chainsaw or anything like that to make them fit on this. I've heard of people doing it. What, what's involved in it?

Tom: Well, it's, it's, it's not too complicated. I basically hack off, uh, anything that's unnecessary. Um, and if you're going to convert it to electronic ignition, you can get rid of the flywheel and, uh, and basically, uh, figure out a way to mount it. And, uh, and that's really it. And I, I had the good fortune that at the time I was a machinist and, uh, I machined my own, uh, propeller hub and, uh, you know, put a magnet in it for the Hall effect sensor to pick up, uh, for the electronic ignition. But, uh, it's all in all, it's not too complicated. The most complicated part of it, it really is, uh, setting up the ignition, uh, you know, timing, so to speak.

Ron: Oh, okay. Yeah. I, I can understand that. And you said, um, like the magneto comes off too then, obviously.

Tom: So yeah, everything that, uh, yeah. If you're going to go with electronic ignition, which I highly recommend because those big flywheels are heavy and that's a lot of weight on the nose and it rotates, you know? So, um, torque and things like that come into, come into play. So if you can convert it to electronic ignition, uh, you're really kind of better off and it, and it really simplifies the installation too.

Ron: Yeah. I mean, the way this is all set up now, there's really not that much to do. But that you just have to hook up a, a couple of pieces of electronics to it. Um, and it's, it's pretty much done. So yeah, that should be easy. I hopefully will have that mounted, um, hopefully this weekend, but we'll see how things go. But, uh, yeah, other than that, I want to get some of the electronic running this thing next week.

Tom: It's going to be pretty quick. Yeah.

Ron: But yeah, I want to get some of the, the electronics in, uh, and kind of get that all buttoned up and done. It's probably going to be a little while till we fly it because we're going to have to wait for this whole, whole thing to, uh, to pass, if you will. Right. Um, cause this is when I'm probably going to want to go fly at the field for the first time. I don't necessarily think, uh, I wouldn't be comfortable doing it at home. Uh, just because it's not enough.

Tom: Not for the maiden anyway.

Ron: Yeah. Maybe after I see how it flies and how it handles, it might not be too bad. But for the, for the first time, just in case something happens, I always prefer to, to go to the field for maidens. Yeah.

Tom: Me too.

Ron: But, uh, a lot more room out there at the field. Yeah, that's true. And, and there's a lot less trees, a lot of houses. Um, you know, not, not that there's houses really close to where I am, but if something happened and you lost a plane, you know, it's possible it would be, uh, it's possible it would go somewhere you don't want it to go. And that does happen with planes. So unfortunately it's not unheard of to lose one.

Tom: Unfortunately, it does happen once in a while. Not nearly as often as it used to though. That's for sure. Thanks to 2.4.

Ron: Yeah. See, I never flew before the 2.4 was out, so I didn't have to deal with FM or AM or whatever they had before. Good times. I guess I'm kind of lucky in, in not knowing what that whole fiasco was about. Yeah.

Tom: It was good times.

Ron: Yeah. So after we're done with, with these, what, uh, what are you thinking about working on next?

Tom: Well, like I said, I gotta, I gotta finish up these projects on the bench before I start anything new on, on the Horton, um, you know, I'm making, making good progress, especially now that we have all this extra time.

Ron: Um, you know, I got the left-hand wing sheeted and, um, don't have to cut out the control surfaces and, um, hinge them.

Tom: This thing uses a, a unique hinging method. Um, they're Frise-style hinges, F-R-I-S-E. So we'll put a picture up on the website, maybe so people can see what I'm talking about. But, um, uh, still have all that to do. And then I still have to do the right-hand wing panel, install drag rudders and move on to the fuselage. So I have a lot of work to do. Hopefully I get it all done here with this, thanks to the coronavirus. But, uh, before I start anything new, I, I would like to get these things off my bench. You know, we kind of talked a little bit about maybe what we'd work on next. And I don't know, I, once these things are done, who knows? Maybe we'll, uh, we'll come up with something together we can work on.

Ron: You had said something about maybe doing a kit or something that you, uh, that you have. So I think that would be fun.

Tom: Yeah, a kit would be good. Um, I have, you know, I have a few to choose from. Um, we'll see. I mean, uh, a kit, you know, is, uh, is a lot of fun and you can, you know, you can usually frame up, uh, uh, an airframe depending on the complexity of the kit, you know, in a few evenings. But if you're really looking for a challenger, I've kind of got the itch to do maybe a scratch build, um, you know, this next time.

Ron: Okay. You got my attention on that. So I've never done a scratch build, but I actually have some plans that, uh, yeah, if you don't want to do a kit and you want to do a scratch build, I have some plans. It's an old, uh, a Ford, uh, tri-motor. Really? Yeah. You don't see very many of those. I think that would be fun to do. Oh, that would be a fun project.

Tom: I could, uh, I could definitely see working on, working on something like that next. It's a fairly simple airplane. Yeah. I, I think, um, yeah, maybe we'll, we'll look into that. Would you go electric?

Ron: I would like to do electric, but I, I would like to have, uh, you know, honestly, I'd like to have four strokes on it, but I don't know how well, how well, uh, that would work. It's only like a, I think it's a 78 inch wingspan. Again, if I remember the plans correctly. Um, so have you ever scaled up plans?

Tom: I have not, I've bought plans that have been scaled up and built from that before, um, but I've never actually scaled anything up myself.

Ron: Well, okay. So you've built from scaled up plans though. So I mean, like literally, does that just mean that they're, they're blown up a little bit?

Tom: Mm-hmm.

Ron: Cause I can, I can, I can blow them up. Um, depending on, I think if, if it's something, cause I'd like to do this towards, you know, a hundred inch wingspan or something in those lines. Um, so if you would like to teach me, if you'd like to teach me how to build off of plans that don't really match exactly, I would have no problem doing that. That would be fun.

Tom: Um, yeah, I, I think that would be, it would be, it'd be a good experience, you know, um, especially, you know, I'm, I'm old school, so I'm always, uh, recommending to folks who want to stay in the hobby and call themselves modelers. They should, they should build a kit at the very least, or if you really want to be a modeler, yeah, build something from plans from scratch. Um, that's, that's kind of my favorite. Uh, and I think if you've got a, if you've got a good quality set of plans that you can blow up, um, yeah, I think that'd be, I think that might be our next project. Yeah. When you're blowing up plans, you want to, you don't want to, you don't want to enlarge them such that all the dimensions are weird.

Ron: Yeah.

Tom: For example, you know, an airplane that uses a three, you know, quarter by three eighths spars, you don't want to blow that up. And then now you've got some weird size spar. That's not a, a standard size that you can go buy at their false supplier. Does that make sense?

Ron: Yeah. You do have to be careful about, about, you know, shrinking or, or enlarging plans. Yeah.

Tom: You know, you want to keep it even. Like, so if it's, if it's, you know, like quarter by three eighths and you blow it up, say. 50%, it doesn't necessarily mean then that it's going to be, you know, half by three quarter, you know what I'm saying? So you have to be careful with the, with the ratios and stuff. But I mean, as long as you, you know, as long as you blow it up when you can get close on, on some of the standard sizes, like, you know, you want standard size wing spars, you want kind of standard size, um, longerons and things like that. But you can modify, um, to some extent, as long as you're, you know, building to the outline, you're usually okay.

Ron: Yeah. Okay. Yeah. I understand what you're saying. So it'll, it'll take some work on the plans, obviously to, to blow them up, but maybe, uh, maybe we'll go over that. Cause like I said, I'd like to have one of those hundred inch or so. So actually it's been probably four, yeah, it would probably be about four years ago now that I think about it because, uh, it was before Piper was born. Um, so there was a, there's a Ford tri-motor that comes around the country, I guess. And, and you can ride on, you know, you can buy tickets. Oh, it takes the tour. Yeah. And so my wife and oldest kid and I, I did that and, uh, oh, it was a blast. They both got sick. Like my oldest was about ready to throw up by the time we landed. I mean, you know, I was, I was like a row ahead of them. Okay. Uh, and when I turned around to look, when I turned around to look at him as we were taken off, his hands were just like holding onto that chair, like for dear life. It was so funny. We have a picture that we took afterwards and, and both he and my wife kind of looked like they were a little bit out of it. They just, uh, you could tell it wasn't, it wasn't as fun for them as it was for me. Was, but I, was that the first plane flying? That was, no, um, we actually went up in a, a small, like seven aircraft. So something a lot smaller than that too, with, uh, my brother-in-law had somebody that had, uh, that had an airplane. We just kind of went up around our hometown and flew over our houses and that kind of stuff. And I enjoyed that too. And the same thing happened to both of them. Um, they were, uh, they were happier, I think, to get out than they were to get in. But yeah, no, it was a good time and I, they would enjoy it a lot more if it wasn't for getting sick. And I, I think, you know, my wife gets sick, I think more than my son did. I think he was more, uh, well, there was a little bit of that motion sickness. I think he was just not sure because you know, the airplane, oh hell, it was what? 90 years old or something by the time we flew in it. So it's, uh, it's an old airplane, but it was, it was still pretty cool. And then we actually saw another one of them. We went up, uh, with, uh, some friends of ours to the, the Henry Ford museum up in Michigan. It's been two or three, I'll probably four years ago, something again on that.

Ron: And, uh, yeah, so we saw one of those they had on display out there too. And it was like, Hey, we flew in one of those and I really liked that airplane. So I think that would be a great next airplane to build or first scratch build for me. So yeah, I'm looking forward to that.

Tom: Yeah. So let's clear off some of these projects, get them finished. And then, uh, yeah, we'll definitely get started on something like that. I think that would be a great project.

Ron: Yeah, I do too. The only thing I have that I actually need to do to get finished, to get out of the way, uh, is that senior telemaster. But like I said, that's, that's almost done. Yeah. It's, it's on its last leg. There's not much else to do.

Tom: I need to finish my stick. That's down there in your way.

Ron: And that's got less time on it than, than the, than the, than the telemaster does.

Tom: So I don't think that's going to be too bad. That thing can be finished up in an evening.

Ron: Yeah. The other thing, uh, I have that Cavalier I'm working on. That's probably one that I will continue on and start working on as time allows. Um, it doesn't have to be done anytime soon. Uh, I do have my yak downstairs though. My, my 40% yak that, uh, needs to get recovered. Yeah.

Tom: Um, yeah, that's a big project.

Ron: Yeah. And I think I'm okay. Uh, as time allows, I'm okay. I think if that waits till next year, I'm not in a huge rush to get that one recovered because that's going to take a lot of time, a lot of effort. Um, and I just want to make sure it's done right. I don't want to get halfway through on it and have something that big in the way. I mean, I can.

Tom: Right. Well, there's, there's stuff you can do in the meantime also. Like, you know, you, you're pretty much going to go through that entire airplane. You know, you can take the electronics out and, and send them off, you know, and have them checked over.

Ron: Yeah. I do plan on having all that. Um, I would be upset with myself. Yeah. I would be upset with myself if I flew that without having that checked and something happened. So I'd rather just do everything the right way and, and get it done correctly.

Tom: Yeah. Just so, so maybe, you know, we can let anyone who might be listening know, um, why, why are

Ron: we going through the yak?

Tom: I mean, it's not something, it's not something you wouldn't normally do to an airplane that's in your, in your stable, so to speak.

Ron: Um, right. I don't want to know.

Tom: Well, I understand, but I don't want our listeners to be confused and don't want anybody to think that you have to do this to your airframes every so often. And well, it's usually you have to do something like this because something happens.

Ron: Right. So I had it stored in, in my airplane trailer and it did spring a leak. So, uh, when I went, when I went out this spring, uh, and looked at it, so actually this airplane didn't get messed up, um, because of the, the water that came in the trailer, I did lose three airplanes because of it. Um, right. Two of which are probably fixable, but one I'm not even going to worry about or try. It's, uh, uh, uh, uh, a Piper Cub that, uh, that really, I mean, it just, it got the most wet out of all of them. Um, and it's warped. I mean, the, uh, skin has all come off. The monocoat is peeled off and wood underneath just looks terrible. So that, that's one that's just not even worth trying to do anything on. Um, the one I'm most upset about being out there getting messed up is my Sig Cavalier. Um, it looks like the fuselage is fine.

Tom: That was your first one too, right?

Ron: That was my first nitro plane. Yeah. And my really favorite one that I had, um, it didn't get flown as much because it was nitro. Most of the stuff I fly around, uh, my house at least is electric. So it, uh, I hadn't touched that one or seen it for a while. Um, but the fuselage, it's okay. The wing is toast, but I do have plans for building a new wing. So I can probably, I can probably work on doing that too sometime, but I'm the kit I'm building now is a Sig Cavalier already. So I will have that, uh, and you don't need two of them. So, and actually what I'm more excited about with the one I'm building, um, that's why I'm putting a retractable gear in it. Uh, that's one of the fun things you can do when you're building. You know, an airplane is made exactly how you want it. So, um, it's, you know, tricycle gear, just like a regular Cavalier is. Um, but yeah, so I went ahead and did retractable for gear and I'm going to change it for it's an electric airplane as opposed to a nitro. Uh, so yeah, it's going to be pretty cool when it's done. I'm, I'm excited about that part. I have all the electronics and stuff in, uh, and installed for the gear. So that part's all, all done. I just got to finish up on, uh, on the wing really, because everything else is, uh, is taken care of on the fuselage.

Ron: So that's one too, that shouldn't take too long.

Tom: But, but getting back to the Yak.

Ron: Oh yeah. I forgot about, I think I was mentally trying to not tell that story.

Tom: I understand. I really do. Um, but usually when something like that gets wet, um, and, and the high humidity, it, you know, that it gets everywhere to include your electronics.

Ron: Yeah.

Tom: So they really, you know, especially on an airplane that's that big and that, um, the electronics are that, um, that expensive, it's worthwhile to send the servos and the receiver and any sort of electronic gizmo that was in the airframe back to a manufacturer. And they'll, I know horizon, you know, does this, they'll provide a service, you know, they'll go through everything, make sure I think it's good to go because these were specifically the servos were, were fairly expensive servos.

Ron: Yeah. They were over a hundred bucks a piece and there's, I think eight of them in there. If I remember right.

Tom: So I think people, yeah, yeah. Um, so that's why, I mean, it's not something we would normally recommend somebody do every season, you know, go entirely through your airframe, but this particular, um, case, yeah, yeah. I think it warrants, you know, sending the electronics to the manufacturer. And taking all the covering off, inspecting the airframe, making sure, you know, all the, all the glue joints and all the, you know, the sheeted surfaces, make sure that's all still really solid. Cause, um, especially an airplane this large, it's not, it's not easy, uh, sometimes financially to acquire another one. If you, if you have to.

Ron: Right.

Tom: Yeah. If you know what I'm saying.

Ron: I really, I, I do, I get it. They're very expensive. Um, right. I planned on recovering this anyway. Uh, the color thing that's on it is nice, but it's not me. You know, I, I, I prefer, I prefer different colors. Um, so that was in the plan anyway. This just kind of pushes my, my timeframe for it up. Um, and like I said, if I don't get to it this year, I don't get to it this year. Uh, I did actually already buy a new cowl for it. Um, so it's a, it's an Aerotech yak. And apparently, uh, it's kind of hard to find out information on that company. Uh, from what I understand, it was a company in Florida. Um, and several years ago, like I'm thinking late, like 2009 ish, 2010 era. I think that's when it was. Um, that company had a fire or something and they lost all of their molds. They lost everything for building those big planes. Um, well, that's a shame. That's the story I heard now. How correct it is. Like I said, I, I, I can't tell for sure, but I was on flying giant several years ago when I was trying to research and find out, you know, more information on this airplane after I got it. Um, and there was a guy there that had, um, that had a cowl for it, but he said it was the last one. Apparently he worked for the company. Um, and he said it was the last one that they had. Okay. And luckily, and something I like too, it's a split cowl. So it has the top and the bottom, which the cowl that was on the original plane, um, was a single piece cowl. So it really made it a pain when you were trying to do anything, uh, tuning the engine, doing anything on that engine to have to take that whole cowl off. Because to do that, you had to take obviously the propeller off and, and it was just a pain, especially if you're just trying to adjust something. Cause it, it, it was hard, like where the, the set screws and stuff for the, the, what's it called for like the high, the high and low needles were hard to get to. Um, so you can just drill a hole in the, in the cowl. So it was something to where you had to literally take it off to adjust the engine. So it'll be nice. We get that all painted up. It'll be a two piece cowl. And then we can just take the top piece off. No problem. And then, uh, you know, do whatever adjustments need to be done. So I'm looking forward to doing that, but it, it, it probably won't be this year.

Tom: I'm excited.

Ron: I guess on the same kind of note, um, cause I know you've had a lot of planes, um, more so than, than me, but is there any, any airplanes you've ever wanted that you have not had yet?

Tom: Oh gosh. Um, well, sure. Um, you know, I'm, I'm sort of space limited where I, where I live. Um, you know, I can only fit a 50 CC size airplane is about as comfortable as I'm getting, um, trying to get in and out of the basement where I, where I keep all my airplanes. Uh, so I've, I've, I've wanted a, a big airplane, like, you know, like your yak for a while. I just, just don't have any place to store it easily. Um, but I think if I, you know, if I could figure out the storage situation and, and transportation, I think I'd really like to have one of those big, um, great planes, third scale, uh, Matt Chapman CAP 580s. I just think those are really cool looking, you know, the yellow one with the paint splats on it, you know what I'm talking about?

Ron: I don't know. Hold on. I'm bringing it up on Google like quick.

Tom: Okay. Uh, but for some reason, there's something, yeah, there's something about that airplane. I just like, I've worked on, uh, one for a club member. Um, and I liked having it here in the basement, which having it here in the basement is proof that I can get it in and out of the basement.

Ron: So true.

Tom: Hmm.

Ron: Yeah, that's a good size airplane.

Tom: And what, uh, you know, wingspan or anything like prime pulled up. I think it was, I think it was right at a hundred inches, maybe, maybe less.

Ron: Yep. That's what it says. Yeah. Uh, 80 to 100cc and then a hundred inches.

Tom: Right.

Ron: So yeah, it's not too bad. As long as you stand at 126 inch span, I'm good.

Tom: Why do I need to stay under that Ron?

Ron: That's, that's my claim to fame. I like the big planes and I want to have the biggest one. So none of my friends can have anything bigger. Yeah.

Tom: And I'm okay with that because I can't store anything that big.

Ron: Yeah. It is a pain, but it's, it's a, it's an impressive plane. I like the size of it. It sure looks, and I know there's some out there that are bigger. So that gets you right underneath the, the weight limit, you know, for having more restrictions put on you.

Tom: Right. Well, it used to be waivers and things like that with, uh, with AMA, which, you know, that may be changing here in the near future. Who knows?

Ron: We can talk about that. I will tell. Yeah. When we know more about it, I guess.

Tom: Right. But, uh, but yeah, I think, I think that, um, that's, that's an airplane that's on the list, you know, uh, by you.

Ron: Um, so I've always liked, uh, besides, besides the trimotor, I've always liked the, uh, the Piper, uh, Pawnees. Oh, okay. Yeah. I thought that that would be a neat one to have. I'd like to have a big one of those too.

Tom: Um, oh, what else?

Ron: Oh, the, the Pilatus Porter, the PC six. That's another one that I've always liked. It's kind of an ugly airplane. Um, it is, it is actually an ugly airplane, but for some reason I really liked that one. Okay. There's something about the long nose on it that just, I think it's a, it's so odd that I like it. Yeah. I don't like, you know, everybody has Cubs. Everybody has all these, the, like a Mustangs. Everybody has the same airplanes. I like different airplanes. Um, you don't see a lot of the parts. Pawnees, you know, there are a few of them out there, but not, not many. Um, so yeah, I think I like things that aren't everywhere. And that's the other thing about the tri-motor. You know, I've never seen one of those in real life. Uh, even with all the fly-ins we've been to with all the different places we've gone. Oh, you mean a, you mean a model one? Yeah. Sorry. Yeah. I've never seen an RC, uh, tri-motor in real life.

Tom: So, you know, come to think of it, I don't think I've ever seen a model of it either.

Ron: Yeah.

Tom: I mean, other than maybe, uh, maybe one of those old, um, Gillows kits. I don't think I've ever seen an actual RC version. So there you go.

Ron: Yeah. That'll be fun.

Tom: Definitely a worthy project.

Ron: Yeah. So. Boy, we keep coming back to that. Yeah. I think that means we both want to.

Tom: I think, yeah. I think that means, uh, we're both excited about it. And I think that should definitely be, uh, be our next, once we've got these other ones finished, I think that should be our next project.

Ron: I'll try and dig out the plans and see what all goes into it. Maybe we can, uh, uh, look at them next time you're over in the next, you know, month or however long it is.

Tom: Yeah. Well, yeah. We'll see what, uh, what the governor says. Huh?

Ron: Yeah. I don't remember if I said earlier in this episode or not, but as of today, we're on the shelter in place or the lockdown or whatever it is. So, right. Yeah. We're, uh, not only are school closed or schools closed till at least April 7th, um, but same with shelter in place. So it, uh, it will definitely give us some more time.

Tom: Well, it's not going to last forever. I mean, you know, it'll, it'll pass in time and then we can get together and talk about that. Yeah.

Ron: So cool. Um, yeah. Do you have anything else you want to talk about?

Tom: Uh, no, no, not really. I mean, uh, I think we've, uh, I think we've covered everything we've been able to accomplish with our time off. So that's something.

Ron: Yeah. So, okay. Well, um, like I said before, then we are going to start releasing weekly. We are going to release this episode, obviously, if you're listening to it, uh, now, and we are also going to be releasing what was going to be our first episode, uh, today. So we will have our RC planes for beginners episode out today. Um, and then we're going to have, so like my plan is we'll, we'll do probably some more of these little, you know, updates, you know, how are things going, um, more so than like what our planned episodes were. Um, we did, and you know, we, we will still work on those because those are going to be more like the polished where we actually know what we're going to be talking about. So there's not, you know, they're more of an outline. So it's going to sound better. It's going to sound like we, you know, had a plan. Whereas with this one, you might be able to tell we didn't, this is just kind of a conversation. Right. Um, so we'll have both of them, you know, both types of episodes kind of scattered in together and we'll just kind of go and see how, how things go for the next several weeks.

From First Flights to RC Plane Lab

Ron and Tom begin by explaining why they wanted to create RC Plane Lab. Ron brought the production and technical interests, while Tom contributed decades of hands-on model-aviation experience. [00:40] Ron: Hello, everyone, and welcome to the RC Plane Lab podcast. This preview episode will help you get to know us. It's our way of introducing ourselves to you. We will tell you why we wanted to start this show and explain some of what you can expect from us after we officially launch the RC Plane Lab podcast on April 7th, 2020.

[00:57] Tom: We'll also give you some background on who we are and why we enjoy the hobby so much.

[01:02] Ron: So, first off, my name is Ron Hull, and I'm an RC Airplane Enthusiast.

[01:05] Tom: And my name is Tom Dale, and I love RC Airplanes, too.

[01:09] Ron: We will be releasing new episodes on a weekly basis starting on April 7th, 2020.

[01:41] Tom: So, hey, Ron, since I'm just kind of along for the ride on this, and you're the tech guy, can you tell me why you wanted to start this podcast?

[01:51] Ron: Well, I wanted to start it because it's something different. It's something fun. It's something neither one of us have done before. That's true.

[01:59] Tom: Definitely outside my comfort zone.

[02:01] Ron: Well, mine, too. So I came up with the idea about five or six months ago and have been mulling it over in my head whether or not it's worth bringing it up and asking you to be a co-host or not. But finally, about three weeks ago when you and your wife were over for dinner, I worked up the courage, if you will, to see if you'd be interested in it or not. And I was. Yeah, you said yeah. Yeah. So I ordered some equipment, and this is where we are now.

[02:30] Tom: Yeah, completely outside my comfort zone. I've never done anything like this before. And, of course, I jumped at the opportunity, and I'm flattered that you wanted me to join you on this journey. Would you call it a journey? Sure, why not? And so, yeah, of course, I said yes, and I'm not really sure what to expect. Neither am I. But I sure like talking about RC airplanes, and I sure like RC airplanes.

[02:54] Ron: So I knew I would not be able to do this by myself. While I can handle the technical side of things and making the podcast, editing it and doing all that, I don't have the knowledge that you would bring to the table. So I'm very happy that you agreed to join me on this.

[03:10] Tom: Well, I appreciate that. You know, yeah, I've been in the hobby a while, and, well, we both have, honestly. Me, not as long as you, but yeah. But, I mean, we've been in the hobby long enough to, certainly long enough to put something like this together. And, I mean, it seems like, I'm not a podcast listener, subscriber type. In fact, I, until you brought the idea up to me, I had never even listened to a single podcast.

[03:38] Ron: Which is funny to me, because I listen to podcasts all the time.

[03:42] Tom: Right. So I never, I didn't know what, you know, even really what a podcast was. I mean, I guess I kind of likened it to a YouTube channel, where you basically are just like a video minus the video, I guess, if that makes sense. Like a YouTube video minus the video portion of it. So you're just hearing the people, you know, I'm in the background. So that's, I guess, kind of what I envisioned. But, you know, after doing a little bit of research and looking around out there at other podcasts, and I downloaded a podcasting app, I guess is what they're called. And, yeah, you and I both sort of noticed that there's kind of a lack of RC airplane specific podcasts. There's a lot of, you know, other types of stuff out there, RC cars.

[04:28] Ron: And there's a lot of older versions of the podcast and stuff that people that I've noticed and actually that I've listened to over the years haven't stuck with it. And there's not a lot out there now to kind of fill the void. So, you know, hopefully we can do that. Hopefully we can give somebody something decent to listen to and teach them some stuff while we do it.

[04:46] Tom: Yeah, I think it'll be fun. Like you said, you know, you've got some experience, and I, you know, have many, many years of experience. Much more experience. It's hard to remember that first one, you know what I mean?

[04:59] Ron: Speaking of first times, do you remember the first time you and I met? I do. I think our memories of that event are a little bit different.

[05:08] Tom: A little bit different, but not too much. But not, yeah. Well, my first memory is I was outside my house, which happened to not be too far from your house at the time.

[05:18] Ron: About half a block.

[05:19] Tom: And I was out front playing with an RC car, probably a T-Max. And I remember having a conversation with you about nitro-powered RC cars. And that's my kind of first memory of actually talking to you.

[05:37] Ron: Right, that's pretty close to my first memory. However, mine was at my house. And actually, I remember, so you used to work with a guy that lived across the street from me. Actually, it was the dad, the father of a kid I used to run around with.

[05:54] Tom: Yeah.

[05:54] Ron: And you used to work with him, and he knew I was into the RC toys, cars and such. And he introduced us when you were over at his house. I don't know what you were doing up there, but you were, from what I remember, up at his house. And you were heading home or something when I was out, and he introduced us.

[06:12] Tom: Yeah, that makes sense. Because at that time, I would have been helping him with, it's been a long time ago, but I would have been helping him.

[06:19] Ron: He was rebuilding an old pickup, and I think I was helping him with the engine.

[06:23] Tom: And, yeah, so that makes sense. And that could be the more accurate memory, but either way, they're pretty close.

[06:30] Ron: So, maybe the first time I didn't stand out, and you just didn't remember, because, you know, whatever, who cares? That could be. I mean, I'm pretty old. This weird kid lives up the street from me, and, you know, he likes the same thing I do, but whatever. Because there is quite an age difference between us. There is. At the time, I would have been 21, and that was, so 2002, I think, is about the year it would have been. And so, I was 21 then, and you were?

[06:54] Tom: A lot older.

[06:56] Ron: Do you want to say?

[06:57] Tom: So, yeah, I mean, at that, you know, I would have been 41 at the time. Or, I'm sorry, 31. I was going to say, I didn't think there was that much difference. Math, obviously not my strong point.

[07:08] Ron: So, 10 years difference, not 20. Not 20. Okay. But, yeah, so I'm a little older. Right. And, actually, it's kind of funny, too, because I didn't put two and two together until years afterwards, after we actually became friends and were hanging out. I remember around that time frame, I went up to the hobby shop and bought a nitro-powered car. I couldn't even tell you what it is now.

[07:33] Tom: It was an HPI Nitro RS4.

[07:35] Ron: Okay. So, apparently, you know it. I remember it had a purple body on it. Right. And it was expensive. I want to say it was $300 or $400 at the time, maybe. Does that sound right?

[07:44] Tom: Yeah, that sounds right.

[07:45] Ron: Okay. So, I bought that. Super excited to get home. Got home. Started up. Ran great.

[07:53] Tom: Of course it did.

[07:54] Ron: Ran up and down the street. And, as I was coming back towards me, I did a speed run. See how fast it would go. Right. Which was very fast. Sure. I mean, I was impressed.

[08:03] Tom: Two-speed transmission.

[08:04] Ron: And hit the brakes, the brakes locked up, rear brakes only, the car spun around, hit a tire, and just exploded. It went into the garbage can because there was nothing. I mean, at the time, I couldn't figure out how to put it back. You know, Google wasn't around at that time.

[08:22] Tom: Right. So, it was just trash to me. Yeah.

[08:25] Ron: Now, you guys, we kind of met back up later in life. Right. We didn't stay in touch that time. It was probably, oh, give or take 2014, probably, where we started kind of becoming friends again. Yeah. I'd say that's about right. And I remember telling that story when you and your wife were over here for dinner and

[08:46] Tom: come to find out.

[08:47] Ron: And then I started thinking about it. Right. Come to find out that car was yours. Yep. And I bought it through the hobby shop when you were getting rid of it.

[08:53] Tom: So, why was it just the rear brakes? So, I had that car set up to race. We used to race nitro RC cars. This was a touring car for anybody listening that doesn't know. Touring cars, back then, they were nitro-powered, was four-wheel drive. Sometimes they had two-speed transmissions. Sometimes, you know, they didn't. But we raced them on parking lots that you just take a track and set it up with PVC pipe or whatever you had available. And we would spray, you know, grape soda, sugar water, whatever, on the track surface to make it sticky.

[09:29] Ron: Oh.

[09:29] Tom: And then we would buy tires that were very high grip and, you know, run these cars on that surface. And they actually had quite a bit of traction on these surfaces, so much so that it sometimes was hard to get the cars to turn. They would, you know, they would understeer terribly, especially four-wheel drive, you know, all-wheel drive, if you want to call it that, nitro-powered cars. So, to get them to turn, we would, on the nitro RS4, it had a, actually, it did have a front and rear brake. There was a disc in front of the center diff, and then there was a disc behind. To get the cars to turn, we would add brake to the rear more so than the front to try to loosen the car up a little bit. Well, it loosened up a lot. Apparently, because it ended up in a trash can.

[10:17] Ron: Yeah, that's kind of funny. So, it was, so that's kind of a funny story that I enjoy telling now to people about how it happened between us.

[10:28] Tom: And it's so bizarre, because who, like, who would have known then? That we would have that story so many years later. Yeah. You know what I mean?

[10:36] Ron: Yeah, because like I said, we didn't catch back up until, it was probably 2014 or so after I bought my first airplane. Right. We were friends with the hobby shop owner, the local guy that owned the hobby shop here. You actually worked at the hobby shop for a while.

[10:51] Tom: Part-time, yeah.

[10:52] Ron: Right. And that's kind of how…

[10:53] Tom: Expensive hobby, you know, so…

[10:54] Ron: Yeah, I know. Got to do what you got to do. That's why I spent many days in there buying parts to replace things. So, I think it was after I got the first airplane, you know, I would go in and buy parts, see you there a few times and say hi. And then I remember he would have all of us over to his house for dinners.

[11:11] Tom: Yep.

[11:12] Ron: Then we kind of started hanging out then. And then I at least have lost touch with him. I don't know if you have.

[11:17] Tom: Yeah, I have too. I think, you know, once he was done with the hobby business, he went and pursued some other full-scale aviation-type activities. Oh, okay. That's cool. Yeah, he was building, doing some contracting stuff for the government with drones. Oh, okay. Big drones, not the little electric ones.

[11:38] Ron: Well, because I haven't talked to him. It's been years. Right. So…

[11:42] Tom: Yeah, it's been a while for me, too.

[11:43] Ron: Yeah, but then after that, you and I kind of, you know, your wife would come out and we would have dinners on the weekends and stuff. And now it's probably once every couple weeks.

[11:52] Tom: Oh, yeah, at least a couple times a month. Sometimes it's every weekend. Well, you know. It just depends on what we all have to put together now.

[11:57] Ron: Well, that's true. Yeah, you'll be out here a lot more now. So, but yeah, that's a fun way to think about the first time we met. So, do you remember the first time we, or the first time you ever saw an RC airplane?

[12:10] Tom: I mean, my first memory is, you know, a memory of a neighbor of mine back in, it was 1978, 79, somewhere in that range. My dad had retired from the Air Force and we moved to a small town here in the Midwest. And I had a neighbor that had RC airplanes. And my first memory of an RC airplane is this shiny silver airplane that he was tankering with in his backyard. And I just thought it was so cool because, you know, I'd read about airplanes in books and, you know, we, you know, learned about, you know, World War II and things like that in school. And, you know, you see all the cool movies on TV, Tora, Tora, Tora, things like that. And you see all these cool airplanes. Well, here was this, this little, comparatively speaking, airplane and this guy standing over it and it was, it was making noise and smoke and he was controlling it with this weird thing he was holding in his hand. I'd never really seen an RC airplane before that. So that's my first memory, uh, of, of an RC airplane, uh, that really takes me back. So how old would you have been then? So I, I guess probably eight, nine, somewhere, somewhere in that range. Yeah.

[13:17] Announcer: Okay.

[13:18] Ron: Well, so my first memory of an RC airplane actually would have been when I was about the same age as you were, uh, seven or eight, something in there. I remember we were at the park up the street from us about a block and a half away. And there was, uh, probably five or six guys out there with their own airplanes that to me, they looked huge, but I'm sure they were, you know, probably 40 size and something like that. Yeah.

[13:40] Tom: So that, so this would have been approximately when would you say?

[13:44] Ron: 80, 87 ish, 87, 88, something like that. Yeah. Time frame. Um, so to me, like I said, they, they were, they were jets, but most likely nitro or whatever in that time frame.

[13:59] Tom: EDFs and, and, uh, you know, real turbines, probably not, not a thing back then, huh?

[14:05] Ron: Yeah. I don't know when they came out. I didn't get into the hobby then. So that's just the first time I ever saw one. Gotcha. Um, but yeah, no, watched them fly around and I was, I was kind of taken by them and remember seeing them then and then didn't really do much with it till much, much later when I got into the hobby.

[14:19] Tom: But that's my, my first memory of a, yeah, I'm familiar with the, the park you're talking about it. Cause you know, I just happened to live pretty close to that park now.

[14:27] Ron: Yeah. About half as far as, uh, my parents do. Yeah. Yeah.

[14:31] Tom: So I know the park you're talking about and it's not a huge park.

[14:33] Ron: No. Three baseball diamonds is about all that fits on.

[14:36] Tom: Right. Right. So if I had to guess, you know, the 86, 87 timeframe, they were probably not even electric. I mean, cause electric didn't really, you know, take off till early two thousands. Take off. Yeah. It's like what I did there. Yeah, I did.

[14:49] Ron: Nice.

[14:49] Tom: Uh, so yeah, the probably, did, do you remember them? Were they making noise?

[14:54] Ron: Yeah. They, they had to have been nitro. Yeah. I'm sure they were.

[14:57] Tom: Yeah.

[14:58] Ron: But I remember one was a Hornet cause I love the Blue Angel at that time. Very cool. That was back when we still had the, uh, the full scale, uh, air show in our town.

[15:08] Tom: Oh yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I remember that fondly.

[15:10] Ron: Yep.

[15:10] Tom: Saw lots of airplanes out there at the air show over the years.

[15:13] Ron: Yep. That was, that was fun.

[15:15] Tom: So a Hornet, I'm guessing, I mean, you know, I've been doing a long time, uh, a Hornet and airplanes like that were probably what we would call it, you know, a tractor, probably not even a pusher back then. Uh, I probably had a nitro motor on the front of it, you know, spinning a regular propeller.

[15:33] Ron: Yeah. Most likely. It becomes mostly invisible when it's running.

[15:36] Tom: Right. So yeah. Very cool.

[15:38] Ron: Yeah. I thought it was cool. So when did you get your first airplane? It would have been, it would have been the Christmas of 79.

[15:44] Tom: It would have been the same, the same year that I had my first RC airplane memory. Uh, the guy next door that, uh, sort of introduced me to RC airplanes, his name was Mike, talked to my mom and dad and, uh, he actually convinced them to let me go with him a few times that summer to the, to the field to watch him actually fly that, that airplane. That was my first memory. Uh, great memory. Uh, anyway, that, so that would have been Christmas of, of 79 and he talked to my mom and dad and told him what to buy and, uh, all the other stuff that I was going to need for it. And under the Christmas tree in 1979 was, yeah, my, my first airplane and everything I needed to, to fly it.

[16:20] Ron: Nice. So where did they get it?

[16:22] Tom: So they got it, uh, you know, they talked to my neighbor and back then, you know, there was no, there was no internet, you know, you couldn't just fire up the computer and order it off of Amazon or, you know, horizon or tower hobbies or what have you. So they actually mail ordered it. That's back when you actually either called a phone number or you actually filled out an order form and mailed it in to the mail order company.

[16:45] Ron: And at that time it was, it was tower hobbies.

[16:47] Tom: That is before my time. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So they, you know, they, they filled out the order form and checked the boxes of each item that they wanted and, uh, wrote a check and sealed it up in an envelope and sent it in the mail to Champaign, Illinois. And, uh, you know, just before Christmas, I don't know when, but, uh, they got it and had it all wrapped for me under the tree.

[17:09] Ron: Wow.

[17:09] Tom: And what was it? It was a, uh, it was a Great Planes, uh, trainer 20 kit.

[17:15] Ron: So my, my first airplane was a kit. You had to put it together. I did. Yeah. Yeah.

[17:19] Tom: Mike, uh, the neighbor next door helped me and we built it over in his house and his shop downstairs over that winter. Yeah. And I actually, you know, had it ready to fly the following spring.

[17:30] Ron: Wow. That's a lot of work to do.

[17:32] Tom: Yeah. Yeah. It was, uh, you know, prior to that, all I had done was built plastic models and things like that, you know, built stuff out of Lego and whatnot. But, uh, yeah, that was a, that was a real learning experience for me. And it was very, um, in my opinion, it was very beneficial, uh, you know, cause you know, you're taking something that's in pieces and you have to follow directions and you have to do it in a certain order and you have to use a certain technique. And, uh, I, I've learned a lot from that, uh, from that experience actually. Not so much these days, you know, you, people buy an RF, they pull it out of the box, charge batteries and it's ready to fly. It wasn't, wasn't like that back then.

[18:10] Ron: So my first airplane was an RF. He pulled it out of the box and it was ready to fly. Uh, I don't know if I would've got into it if I had to build my first airplane. Like I would've been a little too scared.

[18:20] Tom: Yeah.

[18:21] Ron: Uh, putting that much work into something and then flinging around in the air, if you're not sure what you're doing and not sure if you can land would be a little, a little too nerve wracking for me. Yeah.

[18:30] Tom: That's why back then they, they always, and even in the, in the instruction manuals, I always told you, you know, have, have help from an experienced, you know, uh, somebody who already had experience in the hobby to, to get you started. Cause if you didn't, yeah, it was a guaranteed failure.

[18:43] Ron: Well, not well back then probably for me, it wasn't guaranteed. I was fairly lucky the first time I flew was by myself, uh, without an instructor or a trainer or anything like that. And I, I, I lucked out enough to where I was able to take off, fly around land and, and have no issues.

[19:00] Tom: And the only real experience you had with RC airplanes before that was that memory of them flying those jets in that field, right?

[19:06] Ron: Yeah. So for me, 2012, uh, I took my oldest kid to the hobby shop just because we were bored sitting around the house and it's like, well, what are we going to do? It's father's day. Let's, let's go out and see what they have in the hobby shop.

[19:17] Tom: That's a bad thing to do when you're bored.

[19:19] Ron: It was, uh, yeah. So we saw that there and it was, uh, a hundred bucks, something like that. Right. Included everything you needed. You just had to put the landing gear on, charge a battery. I don't remember, put the decals on. It was just a foam plane, little, uh, hobby zone, super cub. Great plane though.

[19:38] Tom: And it was a fun trainer. Yeah. Three channel, right?

[19:41] Ron: Yeah. Yeah. I would not buy a three channel to begin with anymore. Right. So going from three to four was a little difficult. Sure. Uh, your rudder's on the, the left, uh, left thumb, you know, when you're, when you're on a four channel and when you're learning on a three channel, the rudder's on the right. Sure. Because there's no ailerons. Exactly. No problem when you're flying, but when you're on the ground trying to taxi around and stuff and you need a steer when you're taken off.

[20:05] Tom: Usually.

[20:05] Ron: That changes things.

[20:07] Tom: Sure. Yeah.

[20:07] Ron: Sure. So it was actually harder for me to learn to fly a four channel after learning on a three channel than going to a three channel from nothing.

[20:15] Tom: Yeah. Well, and I was, I was going to say, I mean, this, this could be a subject all on its own, but you know, what's the best piece of advice you ever got? Well, for me that, you know, the best piece of advice I ever got was from that neighbor of mine, Mike. Like he, he said, uh, you're better off learning with four channels than, than learning with just three and then trying to transfer later for that. Exactly what you said. That very reason.

[20:35] Ron: Wish I had heard that first.

[20:36] Tom: Yeah. Right.

[20:37] Ron: But I mean, it worked out, so I can't be too, too upset about it. Yeah. Yeah. Now, when you started, did they have the, the buddy box system that they have now? No. No.

[20:47] Tom: No, there was no, there was no such thing as a trainer cords and buddy boxes. And, you know, with the, with the spectrum radios, you know, we have the, the slave and the master where the, you know, you can, you can hook up a transmitter and take control just with the flick of a switch. Yeah.

[21:01] Ron: No, we had, uh, we had the old, uh, hand the transmitter over method.

[21:05] Tom: That's what, uh, that's how we, how we learned back in the day.

[21:08] Ron: Yeah. And the few seconds of no control with nobody being in charge is what kind of scares me. Yeah. Cause usually you don't want to hand it back unless something is going on and you're afraid you're going to crash it. Exactly. And that's when you don't want to have hands off.

[21:20] Tom: And actually that, uh, you know, that crashes happened a lot during that, uh,

[21:25] Ron: transition from one person's hands to the other, you know, of the transmitter.

[21:30] Tom: Uh, but you know, we did what we had to do and, uh, I'm still in the hobby.

[21:34] Ron: So much easier to accept when you spent a hundred bucks on a piece of foam flying around than when you spent money and had to put hours and hours of labor into it.

[21:42] Tom: Sure.

[21:42] Ron: Sure.

[21:43] Tom: Uh, yeah, I crashed, I crashed a lot back then.

[21:46] Ron: Yeah. I think that's normal when you start. I actually, after I flew a few times, uh, I actually didn't start at the field when I, when I started flying, I just went out back here into the few acres we have and, and kind of flew around the house. After I did that a few times and knew I was kind of be into it. I, I bought a, um, a simulator for the computer.

[22:07] Tom: Yeah.

[22:08] Ron: That helped a lot. Sure. Um, but it does give you a false sense of security. Absolutely. They don't fly the same in real life as they do on the simulator. So it's good for taking off or flying around for landing, for getting the basics down, but don't expect everything.

[22:24] Tom: The whole, yeah, the whole, everything is reversed when it's coming at you.

[22:27] Ron: Yeah. Yeah. That's, that's, yeah, that's difficult to get used to if you're not used to it. But see, I started out with RC cars too. Sure. And if you, if you kind of get that with a car, you can get it with an airplane just

[22:36] Tom: as easy.

[22:36] Ron: Right.

[22:36] Tom: It's, it's almost like it's a, it's a trained, uh, reaction or, or switch in our brains. I think sometimes it like, especially with cars and boats that are sort of two dimensional.

[22:47] Ron: Yeah.

[22:48] Tom: You know, you're not worrying about the up, down so much. But yeah, once you get the left and right is backwards when it's coming at you. Yeah. That's a, that's a big hurdle to get over. I remember.

[22:55] Ron: Yeah. There's some people that can't.

[22:56] Tom: Yeah. When I, that's true. When I was learning to fly, I, uh, another great piece of advice I got also from the neighbor is that, you know, when the, when the airplane's coming at you, there's, there's just one thing you need to remember. Stick to the low wing. And I, I still remember that, you know, when the airplane's coming at you and you've got a wing low, if you move the stick in the direction of that low wing, it, it corrects, you know? Oh, okay. So that was a great piece of advice that I got, you know? Uh, unfortunately it didn't, uh, it didn't avoid all the crashes, but, uh, it was a great piece of advice.

[23:29] Ron: Yeah. Unfortunately, crashing is part of flying, uh, at times, but of the ones you have or haven't crashed, what is your favorite airplane? Oh gosh, that's a tough one.

[23:38] Tom: Uh, I've had so many, um, over the years. Uh. About how many have you had? Uh, I, I would say I've probably built from kits or scratch at least 50 over the years. Wow. Um, and I've had probably quite a few more with, you know, when you factor in ARFs and buying used ones and trading and whatever. But, uh, yeah, I don't know. I mean, I think, I think my favorite would depend on what type of flying we're talking about. You know, if we're talking about, you know, just, just going out, you know, on a relaxing Sunday afternoon in the summertime and not having to worry too much about putting on a show for anybody. Uh, I, I gotta say that my favorite is probably the, you know, the classic, uh, stick design, you know, the Great Planes big stick or the, I think Midwest called it the sweet stick or something like that. But, uh, yeah, I think that's, that's probably my, my go-to, uh, for just all around, you know, just going out and having fun without too much stress. Um, but you know, there's lots of different types of flying. What about you?

[24:37] Ron: Well, my favorite airplane, I would say is the SIG Cavalier. Uh, that would be. Yeah. That's my first nitro plane that I ever bought. Sure. It, uh, it just behaves well. There's no surprises with it. It's very nice, slow flying characteristics. Uh, doesn't take a lot of space to land, doesn't take a lot of space to take off. It's, uh, it's just a good flying little airplane. Yeah.

[25:00] Tom: And that's what I love about the stick so much too. It just, it just doesn't have any bad habits.

[25:05] Ron: Yeah. But the stick is ugly.

[25:07] Tom: Well, I mean, it's a matter of opinion, right? I mean, with the right, the right colors and the right covering and, you know. Yeah. Um, yeah, it's not an attractive airplane.

[25:15] Ron: It's not for everybody, but that's okay.

[25:17] Tom: But I mean, it's just such a sweet airplane. It just doesn't have any bad habits. It, it never surprises you.

[25:23] Ron: Well, same with the Cavalier.

[25:24] Tom: Right. But it looks a lot better.

[25:26] Ron: It is a good looking airplane. Although, although that's what, those are kits from when were they have been made?

[25:32] Tom: Oh gosh, the Cavalier, the SIG Cavaliers come from, well, early eighties probably, maybe even late seventies. I mean, it's a SIG kit. Yeah. It was probably a design by somebody else first from plans, you know, and the SIG probably got the rights to produce the kits from plans and stuff would be my guess. But yeah, I mean, we're talking, I mean, I remember the Cavalier from when I started flying. So, I mean, that was, you know, 79.

[25:56] Ron: So. So it goes back. You could, up until probably five years ago, I know for sure, still buy the kit. Yeah. It was hard to find, but I did find one because I wanted to build one after I, after I bought that one and flew it. So I did at least find a kit, you know, that I can start putting together.

[26:13] Tom: And you can always find, you know, not always, I shouldn't say always, but you can usually find, you know, through the secondary market, you know, used market or whatever, or collectors, you know, which is weird. There's, there's a collector's market for old kits, which is. Which you're part of. As much as I hate to admit it, yeah, I've got a stash of kits too, but I plan on flying them all. I'm not buying them to, for investments. I actually plan on someday. One day.

[26:40] Ron: Assembling them all. Right. Right. Filling up your shop.

[26:44] Tom: Well, the shop's already full, but yeah, I have to get rid of a few to, to make room. So getting, you know, back to the question, you know, favorite, favorite airplanes, and it depends on the type of flying and I'm not much of a 3D pilot myself, but you. Nor am I. Well, but you happen to have like the perfect airplane for that, which it's not my airplane, but it is one of my favorite airplanes.

[27:07] Ron: It's that big yak of yours. It's a fun airplane to fly. Um, it behaves well most of the time when you're flying it, but I can't say I've flown it very much because it's still a little scary to, uh, to be flying.

[27:20] Tom: Well, no, the, the, the times that I've seen you fly it and the video, it seems like you're pretty comfortable with it. It seems like it has no bad habits to me.

[27:27] Ron: It doesn't when you're flying it. The, the first time I flew it, it was perfectly fine. I mean, there was no issues whatsoever. The second time I flew it, however, um, I was flying a little more aggressive than I was the first time. You know, the first time was just take off, fly around land and kind of see how it behaves. Second time I was doing more loops, barrel rolls and all that kind of stuff. And I think the draw from all of the servos kind of caused it to brown out. Oh. Uh, yeah. Not fun when you, when you're flinging that much around.

[27:54] Tom: So especially for an airplane that big to, to our listeners, the scale of the airplane is what, 40?

[27:59] Ron: It's a 40% yak, uh, 126 inch wingspan with 170, uh, CC twin DA, yeah, DA170. That's what powers it. Um, so I ended up after that cause it browned out and luckily within probably 50 feet from the ground, it connected back and I was able to very gingerly bring it back in for landing.

[28:21] Tom: What position was it in when it, when it finally came to?

[28:24] Ron: Well, it was facing straight down. Ouch. I mean, it was about to just like lawn dart right into the, into the field. So yeah, luckily it reconnected and everything came back to me just in the nick of time. So I, I brought it back and, and like I said, landed it, uh, were your knees shaking? Uh, that wasn't all. I, I literally put everything away right after that. I got it landed, brought it back to the table and shut it off. All the other airplanes I had with me just took them all apart, put them back in the trailer and brought them home.

[28:53] Tom: Yeah.

[28:54] Ron: You were done. I was done for quite a while. So there was a lot of research after that to figure out, you know, what happened. Cause you know, I just lost it, you know, lost signal law. I had no clue what was going on. Yeah. After playing around with, uh, electronics and stuff.

[29:07] Tom: That's a very eerie feeling.

[29:09] Ron: Yeah. Especially with playing that big. Yeah. Cause I'm not going to buy another one that size. Right. Yeah. Um, so yeah, but anyway, so I had to buy a, uh, I remember what it was called, but it was a whole, a whole different power supply system for it that runs the batteries in and actually it powers, powers things differently. And I, I'd have to look into it again.

[29:30] Tom: Like a smart board.

[29:31] Ron: Yeah.

[29:32] Tom: Right.

[29:33] Ron: Right. And that, that seemed to solve it, but I've only flown it a couple of times since then and don't know if I plan on it anytime soon. Oh, you're going to fly it this summer.

[29:41] Tom: Maybe. Maybe. Yeah. We got to recover it, right? I would like to very much. Yeah.

[29:46] Ron: Yeah. Actually, my favorite thing with that airplane is the, the prop sound when you're flying by is the, the, what's it called? When the ends kind of break the sound barrier. Supersonic. Yeah. Make the, yep. That popping noise. And that actually is in the intro. If you hear, uh, there's a prop sound and that's that plane flying by you. That's cool.

[30:04] Tom: Yep. So. Yeah. That thing, uh, it, like I said, it's not, it's not my airplane. It's yours. Uh, but that's, that's probably one of my favorites. And when, when the day gets here that you're really comfortable with it, that'll be a great 3d type of flying, you know, airplane.

[30:19] Ron: Yeah. It's, it's big and docile. Right. So, I mean, it really flies as well, if not better than most trainers. Right. Just because of the size.

[30:27] Tom: So it's not, it's not really the airplane itself that, that, uh, is, is so intimidating. It's the, it's the, it's all the stuff that's inside it. It's the cost of everything that's in it. Right.

[30:37] Ron: I mean, I'll crash a 40 size plane and not care about it because it's a couple hundred bucks. Right. The motor alone on this one was $1,800. Right. So.

[30:45] Tom: Yeah.

[30:45] Ron: I don't want to do anything to harm it. I totally get it. Servos are 150 bucks a piece and there's 10 of them on there and you know, there's a lot that goes into it and I don't want to have to deal with it. Yeah.

[30:55] Tom: No, I get it. I get it. So we're talking about our favorite airplanes. Do you have a favorite type of flying run? Yeah. I prefer sport flying.

[31:02] Ron: Just flying around, taking off and landing. I don't really care for 3d. I like watching 3d. Right. But I don't like flying 3d mostly because I can't. But it's more fun.

[31:12] Tom: I can't either.

[31:13] Ron: Yeah. Well, maybe one day, but it's more fun just to take off and land, practice landings. I think you can tell a lot about a pilot by how well they can land. Sure. You know, anybody can fly around in circles, but a nice landing with no bounds.

[31:26] Tom: Well, not anyone.

[31:27] Ron: Most anyone should be able to fly around in circles without any problems. Right. But yeah, a nice landing with no bounds, with a nice rollout, with a, you know, just a beautiful touchdown, I think tells you a lot about how good of a pilot somebody is. You know what kind of airplane does that really, really well? A stick. You make fun of my sticks. Only if you know how to fly. Right. Right.

[31:48] Tom: No, you're right though. I mean, somebody who can, who can grease a landing in no matter what they can do in the air.

[31:53] Ron: I mean, you still have to be able to, to land the thing. Yeah.

[31:57] Tom: So no, you're right. I, I, I totally get that. Uh, and I agree. My, my favorite type of flying is, is just, uh, going out there and just doing it for, for sport. You know, I'm, I'm not a 3d pilot. Uh, I don't really aspire to be, I think it's neat. You know, like you said, I like to watch people who are really good at it. Yeah. Uh, and I'm impressed at the talent that is out there, especially on YouTube. You, you know, if you ever watch YouTube videos with these, some of these guys are, what they can do with an airplane is amazing.

[32:24] Ron: Oh yeah.

[32:24] Tom: More like a helicopter. Yeah. Yeah. Um, but, uh, no, for me it's a sport flying and, uh, you know, that, uh, that seems to, I like going to the field and not having any pressure to like put on a show or anything like that, you know?

[32:39] Ron: So a little different than favorite airplane, what's your go-to airplane? Like if you're just going to fly somewhere really quick, what do you, what do you just pick up and throw in the truck?

[32:47] Tom: Well, it seemed the one, the one that I grabbed the most for just, you know, impromptu flying session is the little electric stick.

[32:55] Ron: Yeah.

[32:55] Tom: You know, the little red and white thing, I think it's an old hangar nine electric job flies on an 1800 three cell, you know? Um, but that thing, I mean, I can fly it anywhere. I mean, I can take it to the, to the park where you saw those jets fly so many years

[33:08] Ron: ago and fly it there with no trouble at all.

[33:10] Tom: It just seems to be my go-to. It's a one piece airplane that I can just throw in the back of the car and take anywhere. And it's always ready.

[33:18] Ron: Don't worry about taking the wing off. Nothing like that. It's just ready to go. It's always ready to go. Yeah. I mean, I can take the wing off. If it's a two piece, you know, airplane. Right.

[33:26] Tom: I mean, it hasn't always been my go-to though. I mean, back before we had electrics, um, you know, I had a go-to that was a sort of a similar style. Uh, Sig made a, uh, airplane called the Cobra and they made a couple of different versions of it. They made a big one and a kind of a medium size one, a King Cobra and the Cougars. Um, but it was a one piece airplane. It was powered by a little 25 size, uh, nitro motor and a same thing. You could just throw it in the back of the car. It was always ready to go. Always kept it on a trickle charger. So, you know, I could fly at a moment's notice. Um, but that seems to be my go-to is a small airplane that I can fly in a small space.

[34:05] Ron: Yeah. I think everybody needs one like that. That's the same with me. My go-to is a small, uh, edge 540.

[34:11] Tom: Oh, right. That I have.

[34:12] Ron: It's about the same size as that, uh, as your stick. Uh, where do you get your stick?

[34:18] Tom: Uh, so I think, I think the little electric stick that I have, I, I got it in some wheeling and dealing with, uh, with one of the club members, but I, I think ultimately it came from Horizon Hobby. It was a Hangar 9 airplane. Yeah. And where'd you get your…

[34:31] Ron: Yeah. So I don't know who made the one that I have. It's a, uh, it's a stick built balsa. I'm guessing it was, uh, uh, an R for, or something like that. Um, but anyway, so no, have you, I don't know if you ever heard of the, the Highway 127 sale?

[34:46] Tom: Uh, only because I know you go there.

[34:48] Ron: Yeah. Once a year. It's the world's longest garage sales, like 690 miles long or something like that. It starts somewhere up north and goes…

[34:55] Tom: That's a big garage sale.

[34:56] Ron: Yeah. It is. It goes all the way down through, uh, Tennessee and Georgia. Uh, but we stopped at one of the tents on the side of the road there and I saw a guy had, had this airplane for sale and it had been crushed a little bit on the fuselage and he, uh, he was asking 10 bucks.

[35:12] Tom: $10.

[35:12] Ron: Yeah. Ten whole dollars. Okay. So of course I can't pay what anybody's asking. So I asked him if he'd take five.

[35:19] Tom: Jeez. $5 airplane.

[35:21] Ron: $5 airplane. He said, yeah, you know, I explained to him that it was broke and I'd have to recover it and all that, which it, it needs it. Um, you know, I, I just kind of glued it to him. I put it together to see how well it flew before I spent the, the time and effort to cover it. Uh, which does need to be done now because I liked the way that plane flies. I had all the electronics here. Right. You know, so I, it wasn't like it was a fully ready to fly for $5. Still $5 airframe. Yeah. Airframe, $5. I was happy with that.

[35:48] Tom: And having flown it myself, it is, it is a good flying airplane. Yeah. Behaves well. We'll have to post a picture of it on the website or something.

[35:54] Ron: Yeah. We can put it in there shortly and maybe somebody will know what it is and tell me. Hey, there you go. That'd be good. Yeah.

[35:59] Tom: So yeah, that's, so that's your go-to. It's a one piece, you know, a little electric job.

[36:04] Ron: Yeah. I just take it out back, put it on the runway and go. So what, what's the last plane you flew?

[36:09] Tom: Well, so the last airplane I flew is actually over here on your bench, about half recovered. Imagine that it's a stick.

[36:17] Ron: Yeah. Go figure.

[36:18] Tom: I just thought, you know, we, you know, kind of a tradition here locally is January 1st. We always go out at the first of the year, you know, rain, snow, shine, you know, sunshine, whatever the temps are fly on that first day of the year to try to set the tone for the year. Cause we always say we want to fly more this year, right? Every year we do. Every year. So, um, so yeah, we, we flew out there on January 1st and it was, uh, actually turned out to be a pretty good day that day.

[36:44] Ron: A little wet, but not bad.

[36:44] Tom: Yeah. Right. Um, so I flew the stick over here and, uh, it's, it's looking a little sad. It's, you know, it's the covering is, uh, come off in places, got a few holes that are repaired with, you know, packing tape and this and that. So I felt like that airplane has been pretty good to me. So it deserved a, a new, uh, a new skin. So that's actually the last plane I've flown. Hopefully it'd be the next plane I fly. Hopefully.

[37:09] Ron: Well, after we get off this, we'll, we'll go start working on it some more. Sounds good to me. So the last plane I flew actually was that, uh, was that edge. Yeah. Like I said, that's a go-to plane. That's so easy. Yep. Just throw a battery in, go out back and, and run through it. So.

[37:23] Tom: Yep. I think, I think I flew it that day too.

[37:26] Ron: Probably did. Cause I don't think you brought anything out. Right. So yeah, we just ran a couple of batteries through that one. So with as fun as, as flying is, do you prefer to build or, or to fly?

[37:36] Tom: Well, I, I like to build. Um, I would have to say if I, if, if I had a choice to do one. One or the other, I would choose to go down in my, my little shop and just kind of get

[37:47] Ron: lost in whatever project I happen to be working on.

[37:50] Tom: Uh, I, I get a real satisfaction out of sort of bringing something to life from just a box of sticks. You know what I mean? It's a, it's a, I don't know if you want to call it a Zen or if it's just, you get in a zone, but I really, really enjoy the, the manipulation of, of putting pieces together and making something cool out of them. Uh, so I, I'd have to say I like building more than flying. I mean, I like them both. I'm not saying I don't like flying, but. Yeah.

[38:20] Ron: Uh, I gotta say I like building more. So you're a bigger fan of the, uh, the stick built planes than the ARFs?

[38:28] Tom: Yeah. I'm not, I'm not inherently opposed to ARFs. I mean, they have their place. They're, they're, they're great. You know, they're convenient. You pull them out of the box and just some minor assembly and you're, you got a really great airplane that's ready to fly. But, uh, I, I prefer, you know, building things out of, out of sticks. Uh, that's how I got in the hobby. That's how, that's how I got started. Um, it's a skill I think, I think everybody should know how to do. I think everybody who plans on staying in the hobby for a while should probably build a kid at least once in their, uh, in their hobby RC airplane career.

[39:04] Ron: Yeah. Just so you can appreciate it. Yeah. Appreciate all the work that goes into it and the skills and quality. That's right.

[39:09] Tom: Uh, and covering, you know, we, you know, in ARF you're sort of, not that you're tied down to, to what that airplane looks like. Cause you can always take the covering off and recover it, whatever color you want. You know, but, um, when you're building an airplane yourself, it is your airplane. You know, you can make it yours and, and make it look like no one else's. And I think, I think the individuality that you can get out of building your own airplane is something that satisfies me too on some level.

[39:39] Ron: Yeah. That's fun. I would say that it depends on the time of year for me.

[39:43] Tom: Sure.

[39:43] Ron: You know, summertime when it's warm out and, and light late, it's more fun to go out and throw a battery and, and fly through a, you know, a couple of batteries or something in a night. But wintertime is definitely when you kind of start to hibernate. It's dark early. Yeah.

[39:58] Tom: Oh, I definitely do most of the building in, in wintertime. Yeah. Summertime is, it's hard to make time to, to spend three or four hours downstairs in the, in the shop building an airplane.

[40:09] Ron: But yeah, a lot more going on in the summer, so wintertime is nice to just kind of hibernate and, and get your stuff built to fly, uh, when it warms up.

[40:16] Tom: And you've built your first kit here just, you know, over the last year or so.

[40:20] Ron: Almost. Not finished yet, but it might be, it might be by the time that's, it's time to get out and start flying this year. It's close.

[40:25] Tom: And you got some good, uh, experience, you know, recovering this old airplane over here.

[40:29] Ron: Yeah. That's another fun one.

[40:32] Tom: That's an interesting story right there.

[40:33] Ron: How'd you get that airplane? Uh, well, you can tell the story cause you got it for me.

[40:38] Tom: Well, I mean, it sounded like I was trying to feed my own intro there, but yeah, that's a, that's an interesting story. So a club member, you know, uh, uh, uh, passed away recently and, uh, the club offered to help the family by, uh, you know, liquidating, it was, he had a lot of airplanes, uh, this individual. And, uh, so the club offered to help and, uh, I provided a couple of tables, you know, for them to display the stuff so they could get the stuff sold. And, uh.

[41:06] Ron: Oh, was it like an auction or? Yeah. It was like just a garage sale type thing.

[41:09] Tom: And we invited, you know, a couple other clubs, you know, from the area and, you know, tried to get the word out so she would, you know, get the maximum value she could out of the stuff that was left.

[41:18] Ron: Mm-hmm.

[41:19] Tom: Um, anyway, that, you know, when the, when the sale was over, you know, there's, there was always, you know, there's always stuff left over that nobody wants. Right. So what she did was, you know, she put it all in a big old trash can. And, uh, so yeah, sun, the, the Sunday following the, the sale, I went to go pick up my tables and I happened to see this trash can, a couple of trash cans actually full of airframes, you know, in different states of repair and covering and whatnot. And in this, in these trash cans was a, was a, uh, a Hobby Lobby senior telemaster, which for our listeners who don't know what that is, it's a really, really large airplane, but it also happens to be a really, really good flying airplane. It's a great trainer. Uh, it's a good heavy lift airplane. You know, a lot of, uh, competitions are, are, you know, use this airplane for lifting

[42:08] Ron: heavy objects and, you know, see how far they can fly with it and whatnot. A vintage airplane.

[42:14] Tom: It is a vintage airplane. Yeah. We're talking, you know, eighties, mid eighties, something like that. And you could buy these as kits and ARFs and all that from a, uh, a vendor that was, you know, Hobby Lobby. I don't think they're in business anymore, but. No, they, I've looked them up. They're not.

[42:29] Ron: Yeah. And this was not the kit. This was the ARF version. Yeah. Yeah.

[42:34] Tom: Um, but anyway, in this trash can was this airplane and upon, you know, just a kind of a brief look at it, it looked like it was in pretty good shape. I, uh, I didn't attend the sale, so I didn't really get a chance to, to look at all the airplanes that were there for sale. But, uh, so anyway, I went up to the, to the door and I knocked on the door and I asked her, I was like, Hey, what, uh, are you, are you throwing these, these old airframes away? She's like, yeah, I don't know what else to do with them. And, uh, you know, I just, I just want to be, you know, done with this. And so I can, you know, move on. And I was like, well, would you mind if I took them? She's like, no, I don't mind at all. You know, saves me from having to have our garbage man take them, you know, and, uh, put them in the truck. So I, so I took everything that was in the, in the cans home and of everything that was in there, the, the senior telemaster was the only airplane that was really salvageable. Most of the other ones that had either been crushed or, or crashed, you know, or just otherwise too much work to, to bring back to life, except for this airplane that is

[43:38] Ron: now sitting on your bench over there. And yeah, 30 feet from us, whatever it is. Right, right.

[43:43] Tom: So yeah, all it really needed was some minor repair and some, uh, covering. Uh, so you stripped off most of the covering and are in the process of finishing up the covering.

[43:54] Ron: Starting from scratch. Yeah. Yeah.

[43:55] Tom: I think it's going to be a good flying airplane though.

[43:57] Ron: Yeah, I like the, the red and black color scheme a lot better than the yellow.

[44:00] Tom: Yeah. So anybody that's, uh, familiar with an airplane called the Beast, which was a, a biplane

[44:06] Ron: Hangar 9.

[44:06] Tom: Hangar 9 produced, uh, it's kind of a similar color scheme and it's actually going to look

[44:11] Ron: really good on this airplane. Yeah. Instead of gold, it'll, it'll have silver, but yeah, the same pretty much design. Yeah.

[44:17] Tom: Yeah. So I'm going to make a builder out of you yet.

[44:19] Ron: I could see that happening. It's fun.

[44:22] Tom: Right.

[44:23] Ron: It does give you, it gives you a sense of satisfaction. When you see something that you built, you know, covered and flying around in the air. However, it's a lot more scary doing it that way than flying an ARF.

[44:37] Tom: Well, you do have a lot of, of time invested.

[44:39] Ron: Yeah.

[44:40] Tom: Um, and that's, but, but to me, um, it's not really an investment of time. It's, uh, I don't know. It's hard to explain. Uh, like it's therapy almost. I can get away. I can go downstairs in my workshop and, you know, work on covering an airplane or come out here and work on covering airplanes with you. And it's, to me, it's, it's not an investment. It's, it's quality time.

[45:02] Ron: It's, it's time away from the, you know, the rat race, the grind of going to work and whatever.

[45:08] Tom: So I don't really consider it a, an, uh, you know, an investment so much as it is just a, uh, it feeds me, not me feeding it, if that makes any kind of sense.

[45:19] Ron: No, I can understand that once, once I have more time, you know, I still have young kids. So that takes up most of my time now.

[45:26] Tom: Sure.

[45:27] Ron: Uh, once, once she gets a little bit older, it'll be a lot easier to spend more time building and have the extra time to do that. So yeah, I definitely like to get in the building from gets more or from scratch even.

[45:38] Tom: Yeah. And that's, and that's something that, uh, that I would also like to do more of. I've, I've got a few sets of plans at home that I would like to build, uh, airplanes off of that they just don't offer kits for anymore. Um, and, and that's something I'd like to do more of over, you know, over the next few years is now that my kids are older, I don't have the, I don't have the distractions like I used to. I can, I can devote a little more time to cutting out parts and gluing them together.

[46:05] Ron: Yeah. I'm not there yet, but I'll get there. So what are you working on now?

[46:09] Tom: So I'm, you know, aside from the airplane that I'm recovering here at your house, uh, on my workbench at home, I've got a, uh, uh, it's a project for one of our club members, uh, that I agreed to take on. And it's a, it's a Horton, um, a scale model of a Horton 229, which was a, uh, World War II, uh, German airplane, uh, that they were developing a jet fighter, um, to sort of come online at about the same time that ME 262, which was their first operational, actually the world's first operational jet fighter. Uh, so it's an, it's a flying wing, uh, no tail, uh, no fuselage. It's a, it's what we would call a blended wing these days, but it's all wing and it's a big airplane. It's going to be an electric ducted fan has two, two, uh, I think 110, 110 millimeter fans in it. It's a, it's a big one.

[47:01] Ron: Yeah.

[47:01] Tom: It's a big airplane. Retractable gear, flaps, uh, slats, drag brakes, which are similar to spoilers, except there's one on the bottom and the top of the wing, uh, to help control yaw because there is no vertical, you know, there's no tail on the airplane.

[47:17] Ron: So is that kind of like a B2 bomber? Is that the B2 that's the flat wing? Yep. Okay. Yep. Pretty, pretty much exactly same idea, except not as angular. You know, radar wasn't as big a deal back then, so they didn't have to be as stealthy.

[47:31] Tom: Although this airplane was about as stealth as you could get back then because the cross sectional area was just very, very small compared to everything else that was produced at the time. So it would have been nearly invisible on radar at that time. So, so that's what I'm working on now. It's a, it's a complicated project. Um, it's a, like I said, it's a big airplane. I think that it's a 92 inch wing. Um, you can get on a Google and look up Horton 229 and give you an idea of what this

[48:01] Ron: airplane looks like. Uh, yeah, we can post a link in the show notes too.

[48:05] Tom: Sure. Uh, but the, uh, it, it, yeah, it's, it's, uh, I mean, you would think you're just building a wing, right? It shouldn't be that big a deal, but there's a lot of stuff that goes inside, uh, this particular wing with the, with the drag rudders and the, and the flaps and the slats and all this other stuff that's, that's going to be incorporated into the wing. Uh, it was a, it's a, it's one of the more complicated builds I've, I've actually tried to tackle here, at least in the last few years, uh, because of the, the mechanics, you know, they, it's a, it was a kit that, uh, the club member brought in from, uh, Europe somewhere, uh, cause you couldn't get it here in the States. And, um, so it has plans and it has, you know, the kit parts, but they don't give you anything really for the, like the mechanical aspects of it. So they tell you where to cut everything for, to make the flaps and the ailerons and all that, but they don't tell you how to hinge them or how you want to actually build log or anything like that. Nothing like that. So it's been, it's been quite a project.

[49:08] Ron: Who's going to fly it first?

[49:10] Tom: That's a good question.

[49:12] Ron: I'll tell, I guess.

[49:13] Tom: Well, because it's such a unique airplane and big and expensive, he's spent quite a, quite a bit of money on the, on, well, 110 millimeter fans. And he didn't buy the cheap ones. These are like the cool machined aluminum anodized. They're like red and gold. If anyone knows what that is, they can chime in or call us and let us know. But, um, so I would be nervous to fly it myself, even though I consider myself a fair test pilot. Uh, I usually I'm okay with flying airplanes for the first time, but I.

[49:48] Ron: Well, there's a lot of people that come to you to, to maiden their planes. So, yeah.

[49:52] Tom: Yeah.

[49:53] Ron: You've actually made more of mine than I have.

[49:55] Tom: Well, I mean, I know my limits, right? So, um, if, if the CG looks about right, I'll, I'll usually, you know, attempt it. But this thing is, uh, is so, so unusual compared to most other airplanes that, uh, I'm, I'm, I'm hoping that I, that I don't get tapped to, to fly this one the first time. Hopefully the owner of the airplane will either fly it or have someone else fly it. Or maybe I'll be, you know, uh, conveniently sick the day he needs to fly it.

[50:26] Ron: Oh no. You want to be there for it.

[50:28] Tom: I would like to see video. Cause I think it's going to fly well. I do. But, uh, yeah, just, uh, I think I'd rather see someone else test fly it. But, you know, if it comes down to it and he really wants to fly it and there's nobody

[50:40] Ron: available, then I guess, I guess I'll be it. And then make sure I'm there when that happens. Yeah. You'll hold the camera. I'll hold the camera.

[50:48] Tom: What about you? You got any projects going on right now? Uh, just. Aside from the old telemaster over here?

[50:54] Ron: Recovering that and the Cavalier I'm working on. That's about all right now.

[50:58] Tom: Cavalier's close though.

[50:59] Ron: Cavalier's probably got another couple months in it and it should be able to be maiden. Um, yeah. After we do that and then we get the, uh, telemaster covered, I'll probably bring the big plane in and get that one torn apart. We'll, we'll have to see how that goes though. Depends how much time we have.

[51:16] Tom: Yeah. That won't be the only big airplane we've covered down here.

[51:19] Ron: No. No. The other one was a little bit smaller than that, but what was it? It was 150 CC, uh, oh, extra.

[51:27] Tom: I believe it was an extra. Yeah. Extra 300. Yeah. With the Red Bull colors. Yeah.

[51:31] Ron: I think 118 inch wingspan.

[51:33] Tom: That sounds right. So I was eight inches bigger. Yeah.

[51:37] Ron: Wider.

[51:39] Tom: Right.

[51:40] Ron: Where it counts.

[51:40] Tom: It's not a competition, Ron. No, it sure is. That's a little awkward.

[51:46] Ron: Yeah. Okay. So let's move on. Um, so what do you prefer to fly with? Do you prefer, uh, nitro gas or, or electric?

[51:56] Tom: Uh, I'm old school. I got started by building my own airplanes and back then the only way to power them was with nitro, right? Yeah. You know, electrics didn't really come on strong until 2000s, early 2000s, uh, with, you know, the advent of brushless motors and lipo batteries, um, and, you know, gasoline powered engines weren't real, they weren't as mainstream as they are now, especially for big airplanes. So the only way to, to do it back then when I started was nitro and, uh, and, and because I think I also built my first airplane, uh, that's probably why I like to build because my first airplane was nitro powered. That's probably, I would have to say that's my favorite. I like the smell. I like the sound that they make.

[52:42] Ron: Um, I like the, um, yeah, the smell is definitely unique to nitro.

[52:46] Tom: Sure. Sure. I mean, I know there's disadvantage, you know, they make a mess and they can be kind of finicky, you know, depending on weather and they're hard to run in cold weather or whatever. But, um, for me, it's, it's, uh, it just takes me back. You know, it's, it's what I've always done. Uh, I'm a very hands-on type of individual. So I like to, I like to tinker with my hands. I like to tune them. You know, I, you know, frequently at the field, you know, somebody, Hey Tom, can you help me tune this, you know, tune this airplane? It's, I just really, really enjoy that. Um, not that I'm saying the electrics aren't fantastic and the gas powered stuff is great too. Uh, but I would have to say that my favorite, my go-to is, is going to always be nitro four strokes or two strokes.

[53:32] Ron: They all have their place. Sure. So the, the electric is where, where I would go. Right. Solely because I like the simplicity of it.

[53:39] Tom: Yeah.

[53:40] Ron: But when it comes obviously to bigger planes, I prefer gas, uh, a lot easier to work with than the nitro is a lot cheaper to run. It's cheaper to run for sure. Yeah. And there's just, uh, there's, there's something to having an actual small engine with a spark plug that I like. Right. I don't know.

[54:01] Tom: Well, and, and you get into the, to the really big airplanes, like let's say your Yak, for example, you, I don't, I mean, I think it would be hard to power that airplane with a nitro or with something nitro powered.

[54:12] Ron: Yeah. I don't know if you could or not.

[54:14] Tom: Electrics are coming on.

[54:15] Ron: They, they have some 170 CC equivalent electrics, but the batteries are huge.

[54:22] Tom: Yeah. Yeah. And that amount of, that amount of juice in one small area really makes me nervous. Electricity scares, scares me to death. I don't even touch electricity in my own home. So I'll go with nitro.

[54:36] Ron: Yeah. Yeah. I can see that, but I, I do like battery just for the simplicity of it. Yeah.

[54:41] Tom: How about, uh, do you have a, an opinion on two strokes or four strokes?

[54:46] Ron: Uh, four strokes sound a lot better. Right. Right. So I would prefer that over two stroke. But once again, you get more power out of a two stroke. So that's true. There's pros and cons to everything.

[54:57] Tom: Right. It's whatever you, you value most.

[54:59] Ron: Right. Right. You know, if you want to go with a bigger engine that's going to weigh more, that sounds better, you can do that or go with a smaller one that puts out the same amount of power, but doesn't quite sound the same. Right. Boost the performance though, because it's lighter weight. Yeah.

[55:11] Tom: I'd have to say, I like the four strokes. Yeah. You know, they, the sound and the, and it adds another level of, of complexity to the engine that, you know, you have to stay on top of adjusting the valves and I'm just that, you're the tinkering with the hands. I think that's what, uh, really kind of makes me tick.

[55:31] Ron: Yeah. So our, our new tinkering project is going to be this podcast. Um, so I think, I think we'll end it for this one. Yeah. Yeah.

[55:40] Tom: I think so.

[55:41] Ron: Yeah. I think that was pretty good. Uh, I actually didn't know all that about you, so that was fun.

[55:45] Tom: Yeah, it was fun.
