[00:00:04] Hello everyone and welcome to the rc plane lab podcast i hope you enjoy our bonus episode this is being released as soon as we can get it out because we had the occasion while tom and i were at joe and all to sit down and record with fitz and lee from the rc roundtable podcast we had a really good conversation that was recorded outside so there's gonna be a lot of background noise that i hope adds to the ambiance and doesn't distract from the show but we had a very good time sitting down recording with them fitz and lee it was wonderful to meet
[00:00:39] You guys you guys are a class act i am privileged to be able to present to you guys the rc plane hold on let me think about this how's it going to be the r the rc round plane table lab cast without further ado please enjoy welcome to joe and all 2023 we are sitting here with lee and fitz
[00:01:04] From the rc roundtable podcast hey guys welcome gentlemen hello there hello this is lee ray and fitz walker with the rc roundtable podcast we're here at joe and all 2023 we're here with ron and tom from the rc plane lab perfect how's that hello now we have a mixed intro we are wonderful now you
[00:01:22] Can cut and splice to your heart's desire so which runs out of practice by the way yes i have not edited
[00:01:29] Anything anymore time that's that's how it should be well once again when you're all together and you don't care what the actual audio sounds like at this point well we used to we used to do that we
[00:01:38] Used to edit like so hard to make oh my gosh and now that we've gone to youtube to record all our audios we just like that's it it's raw it's what it is that's what you get and that's the same with us
[00:01:48] Like i i used to take out every every every cough everything and oh like our episodes would have
[00:01:55] He would turn a three hour no kidding a three hour recording into about a 25 minute show no not that
[00:02:03] Bad but i will say like an hour episode would take me three hours to edit i mean it was usually three times and yeah so we we now we just sit down and say you get what you get if you don't like it well that's still what you get and you don't throw it right up after that so so for those of you listening
[00:02:24] We're we're in the middle of the electric flying area we actually moved our table and we're sitting on the grass we have this table set up and ron has all his equipment this is great but we're looking at the night flyers right now well that plane has no lights on it so we don't know what he's doing about to crash it looks 3d flying about 400 yards away from us so if you hear noise and stuff guys this is live it's real at joe no and we are having a blast it is amazing it's it's sad though
[00:02:52] It's the last night but for us ron and i's our first joe noll and we're actually really sad that we as we were packing up today we were very mopey i i shed a little bit of a tear to be honest yeah it was it was hey only 360 some days left until next year right and crashes happen too
[00:03:13] Folks that guy just live right into the pilot station so fitz you're quiet what's up man oh i'm just
[00:03:23] Entertained by all you guys that's weird because i'm usually entertained by you guys except for tommy but you guys usually bring me quite a bit of joy i'll take that oh i appreciate that i gotta
[00:03:35] Tell you though we've had this on our show before but so many people came up to fitz today i know you this i swear i don't and i don't know who's listening to the show but there's a guy who watches fits on youtube and he's a kind of youtube channel and and he was just fanning this guy poor fits i mean he was mobbed by people today and bless his heart we've always talked about on our show i need to get a shirt that says i know fitz watcher yes to get more attention but
[00:03:59] Darn fits well many people you by join having us join you you've gained five more
[00:04:04] Listeners all right money well spent yeah well here's the funny thing though so reggie one of our friends that we fly with we told him we were going to be sitting down with you guys and recording actually getting to meet you here too and he was super excited that we got to meet not you lee sorry i know sorry but fits like he loves watching you he is just a huge fan and if you would say hi to reggie he would be like happy right now well hello reggie thank you for your patronage it's much
[00:04:32] Appreciated i i am honored so there you go he will cut that out and that will be his ringtone you are
[00:04:50] Well we have made his year so that's that's all it took so a lot of fun other thing today that i was excited about we got to fly our trash can telemaster with plywood overcast that was awesome like i know
[00:05:05] I know it was a really slop and i use this term formation lightly but it was a really really sloppy i'm not sure you'd use that word at all they were all they were in the air at the same time
[00:05:16] On the main line at jonal i know there are some guys back there going what the heck are these guys doing up here they don't that's not worth anything it's like one of these things not like the other yeah we were saying like our planes combined and their value is like one tank of fuel
[00:05:31] Maybe well ours was free because it came out of a trash can so and it was cobbled together with stuff we had laying around four or five engines later but yeah and and yours seems like
[00:05:43] It did pretty well i thought it's just like i like what excuse me fitz said it's a lazy elephant in the sky and everybody who had their hands on it had a good time i only had to rip the transmitter away from one person oh really yeah a fellow co-worker he won't be named but he got it into a little death spin and i pulled it out but what that was just that was so much fun to have that and this is a shout out to terry hopefully he's listening terry your work your progress to get that sucker in the air is a success who'd have thought that that thing would be at jonal on the main
[00:06:14] Line and greatly appreciated yeah for sure yeah thanks terry because we let both of us fly it as well and man that was that was fun it's fun to fly you got to sign a good job on it yeah we put
[00:06:25] Our names on it so i don't know actually let's go above and beyond what you got to put on that's
[00:06:30] Right we got to put our rc plane lab sticker on because there was a hole that needed a patch and yes i mean and you're like do you have any kind of johnny on the spot sticker but i don't have any tape let's do it perfectly too and i did actually i'm so glad i put the hole where i put it because that is great on the rudder it looks wonderful sabotage yeah nice yeah so okay for those of us that don't actually know the history of plywood overcast give us a brief explanation
[00:07:02] I'm going to start by saying pause go to youtube type plywood overcast go look at terry's video he he made a wonderful video on how he got it what they where they think the origination started like someone who was building it for another hello again this is live folks we had noise behind this sexy car and i bullied terry into making it fly because i think what how cool is that the guy who designed it if he's with us or not has that plane that he never finished flying and having people
[00:07:34] Other people fly it like hopefully lots of people flying it so again it was just a barn i say barn find but this is a basement find and i think what was it cambridge university you think it came from where they were building it for cambridge i think so yeah so it's a big plane 10 foot wingspan as it's a t-tail you'll see it go on yeah pause go watch youtube video well he's about 22 pounds runs on 4s three 4s batteries 9 000 milliamp three and 232 e-flight motors having flown it it doesn't it doesn't fly
[00:08:06] Like a 22 pound airplane to me it really doesn't it's a real sweetheart i think yeah yeah it's a lot
[00:08:14] Of dihedral it does have well it doesn't have any ailerons well i know so but it's a lot of self centering on that one i really really wanted to try the spoilers i'll be honest okay see terry's
[00:08:26] Already made that complaint on our last show he said first off paint the darn piece of wood that holds the engine motors which i did it's black it's black and i like it thank you thank you ron yeah
[00:08:36] Appreciate that terry did you hear that he's okay with the black terry i think it would look better red
[00:08:41] God damn i am now punching tom i was wondering why it wasn't red red before oh so it was red before it was red but before but but terry took it so he took it with his motors so i digress so that was one number two was he wants the spoilers and i don't know if you notice
[00:09:03] It's top and bottom you yeah i heard you mention that i only saw the ones on the top but after after we landed we were chit-chatting you i remember you mentioned that there was spoilers on the bottom
[00:09:13] Too so best when best comes around in october i will see if i can do that in fact i'm actually toying with the idea of bringing it to camp ama at muncie in june so both of my kids have done camp ama it's teens for 14 to 17 they love it i mean it really is heaven for kids they get all these planes thrown at them some a lot of people donate planes and they just put them in a pile and say have fun trash can telemaster right and so i'm thinking of bringing plywood overcast have those kids sign it oh that would be awesome would be awesome yeah so maybe while i'm there while i have some other
[00:09:46] Tools i'll put the spoilers on for you tom cool and then next year and record it so i can watch it and we'll have to fly it again and see the difference yes okay for sure because i i want to come back that's for sure like joan all is definitely on my list of your trips right now well i regret you guys
[00:10:03] Didn't get to fly the telemaster though honestly you let us fly plywood overcast but we
[00:10:08] Didn't let you fly well that was more because tom doinked it into the ground i did and broke the propeller and it's hard to believe and it's on video too yeah but it's hard to believe there are no propellers for sale 16×8 in this place that we saw what well a bunch of vendors were propellers
[00:10:24] But not that size i know fair to be fair to be fair we didn't like spend a lot of time looking like i briefly looked at the the one place and then the extreme flight had their box of free well not free but ten dollar propellers but those were all electrics and i didn't spend a lot of time looking i'm sure i could have if i looked hard enough i could have found one but i honestly didn't think we would have another opportunity to fly it honestly like but tonight would have been perfect yeah see that's just negative thinking i know i i'm such a down negative nilly
[00:10:56] Ron tells me that all the time i do too
[00:11:02] So i'm gonna take over now yeah tell us about jonal tell us about your impressions like the first time you rode into the road and you saw the huge runway tell us your you saw the dancing ponies yeah
[00:11:16] Exactly wow yeah well i mean like that you can't describe it to people that have never been here without them being here and i i know that sounds like a cop-out but until you experience it i don't
[00:11:34] Think you can understand what this actually is yeah and obviously i'm not very good with words and i honestly don't think that you can put the correct words together to accurately describe well can you sign it the experience yeah can i say well sign language yeah i don't know i speak sign language with a lid i'm not a podcast i don't know where to be honest i only know one sign in sign language and i'm not going to share it with you guys so but anyway like when we pulled in and we saw the sign okay it's 12 hours of driving to get here with we didn't stop anywhere and i drove straight
[00:12:12] Through and i slept about 10 of those hours i approve that message so when we pull in we're about half loopy well i'm about half loopy anyway so i'm already ready to be done driving so i saw the sign and the first thing i felt was relief right i was like finally i can get out of this car and but then we came in and we hit the visitor center got our stuff and then yeah the drive back here looking at the flight line and that's just the first one you see it's like okay this this is
[00:12:43] Serious like this is this is a real facility and then you pass the the float line it's like okay there's another like class facility to fly float planes and then you pass the electric line it's like okay when does it like how many of these am i going to go past that i'm just blown away by how well kept it is and how just like i said it's a class facility like the amenities are i mean there's we want we've wanted for nothing as far as amenities go here yeah i would concur if
[00:13:18] You don't have something somebody else does everybody's friendly right my hand hurts from waving to everybody as you drive by them and people give you like i said a genuine smile when they're coming by and i have noticed by the way that that genuine smile at the beginning part of the week is fading on almost everybody that you drive by as the week somebody's tired probably but well and they have to leave well that and they need showers
[00:13:43] Well i'll be honest the shower house that we're we're using over here no problems with that at all
[00:13:48] Oh i didn't say that they weren't available i'm just saying some people fail to use oh yeah understood but what what are your guys's thoughts on this is your two right this is your two fits you start you've been kind of quiet sitting over there yeah wake up wake up we came we saw we
[00:14:07] Flew got a t-shirt really that's your description i guess we should phrase it in the sense that last time we were here we were in the beginning part of the week and it was sort of the slow we didn't realize it what that it was but it was sort of the kind of the gearing up slow part of the week and so we were leaving just as all the vendors were showing up and all we didn't see any of the new time shows or anything like that because it didn't happen oh yeah it was kind of weird so this time we made a point to come back for later yeah like the last half yeah so there's definitely a
[00:14:41] Much more of a jamboree now with at later in the week we actually saw more vendors the last time we got to enjoy some of the meals they had the steak dinners and the barbecue dinners because we missed those because they didn't happen also we get to see more shows like the half-time shows some from a distance some from close up noontime shows and that kind of stuff so there's more entertainment value i guess as a spectator right so it was interesting that as we actually really didn't fly all that much so far i don't think we heavily it's kind of been
[00:15:13] We've flown a little bit here and there i don't know not as much as we planned every time we've driven
[00:15:18] By the electric line i've seen lee at one of the stations with a transmitter in his hand
[00:15:22] Yeah i mean he's flown a fair amount i think well definitely more than the first time well yeah we hauled the trailer and yes made the arrangements to stay here on with an rv
[00:15:33] Yes because last time we flew in and so we pretty much couldn't take hardly anything with us and we actually ended up borrowing a few planes from a friend of mine that lives in the area and so this time we can bring all our planes we have much more things to fly and we've partaken in that but i think we've also been there's so much going on that it's also just sometimes just as entertaining just to kind of walk around and look at things and see what's what's some really unique aircraft are flying here that one-to-one scale a dimisail yeah isn't that cool did you see it fly yes i did oh we missed it
[00:16:05] Well fly in that it made a hop it didn't make a complete circuit oh okay yeah the word was it was too windy okay and so he flew it he ran it down the runway hopped up in the air flew maybe a hundred or so feet in the air and then brought it back down and it looked like it was a good reason he brought it down because it looked very unstable in the way okay everything on that airplane looked
[00:16:28] Loose probably what i love most about that particular airplane is the pilot like i don't know if you it moves it moves and his arms move yeah arms i guess it was arms move head yeah and so i will not
[00:16:45] Be sleeping very well tonight after watching that pilot that thing was creepy it was kind of scary i will give you that but it was pretty cool but it was a full scale i asked the guy say well have you do you have to urge you just jump in it yourself and fly and he gave me that look like no way in hell am i kidding no way but the first time i've seen a one-to-one scale rc airplane that was
[00:17:05] Pretty amazing yeah me too that's the first for me too yeah and i had no clue they were that small
[00:17:10] Oh yeah yeah in real life like i i assume that was like a half scale or something like that but no those that was one-to-one and to think people actually got in that to fly imagine the crazy
[00:17:24] That's true it was 1909 they didn't know any better yeah
[00:17:28] Fitz you mentioned how so you've got two experiences at joe knoll one of them the second half and one of them the first half so ron and i our experience for first-timers is probably unique i guess because not everybody probably comes to joe knoll their first time and stays the entire time the first couple of days exactly like you described kind of slow it was like oh this is really the facility is is class but okay i was expecting more people but then
[00:18:00] Wednesday hit and it was like somebody opened the gates and just people that was when we arrived you guys brought them all with you i got it okay that's the reason to be here how many buses did that take i bet that was a bunch well we've seen them going back and forth that's true empty mostly
[00:18:23] True so anyway yeah the the the first week the first few days anyways it's really slow and like you said the vendors are are kind of showing up and and setting up and things like that but then and then yeah wednesday hits and it's there's there's something to see all the time and that's for me that was that was one of the things that was really eye-opening the fact that you any time you wanted to watch something there was always something going on so yeah it's like one of those
[00:18:51] Three four ring circuses there's always something going on somewhere you can take a peek at so yeah same thing here yeah look over there it's like oh look the control line guys are doing something interesting oh wait no the 3d guys are doing something oh no i hear a jet flying over with smoke pouring out of its yeah orifice everywhere let's go down to the main line see what's going on
[00:19:08] Over there right yeah well i mean like it's it's getting dark out and i can count i just looked around count of the eight airplanes that i could see flying yeah actually i guess seven because one just crashed he did that was our landing i can't use my air quotes yeah land arrival the lights are
[00:19:27] Still working so maybe yeah i guess you could say that this event is really can fulfill whatever type of flying you like absolutely much anything you like there is even helicopters even helicopters there's a helicopter section yeah for all two of them yeah well if they're good they can come join the rest of us but yeah i fly helicopters so i'm just joking on them but yeah there's a group there's a section just for a helicopter which is real nice anything they can fly around it's not super well populated but i've last year i actually made a point to go and talk to them and they're
[00:19:58] Very nice guys they're pretty cool they see them flying around so yeah yeah so yeah it's really and i think when we're talking about busy and not busy if you like to fly don't like to fly with a whole lot of people then it's great to come in early in the week you still get to absorb the atmosphere and the ambiance and you can fly a lot and that would be really bothered by a lot of people but if you like the fun excitement and adrenaline then you can come later in a week and you see all the really neat stuff and you sit back and watch or you can participate in it but just a
[00:20:29] Lot going on all over the place any place all the time well even if flying is not something you
[00:20:35] Enjoy watching there's vendors here so if you enjoy looking at airplanes there are plenty to look at new ones flyable ones i mean it's just like i said it's i i it i struggle with finding words to describe this experience yeah i guess we should mention the vendor row there's a
[00:20:54] Lot of vendors out here yeah and you can't really cover roles more of an l shape yeah it really kind of is the vendor l the vendor l and there's a lot of stuff companies i've never heard of companies are very popular showing their wares some really interesting and interesting aircraft lots of vendors also have lots of little nooks and cranny kind of things little niblets and i bought i was going to say let's speak about that niblet you bought which niblet so i go to a fly-in i buy a submarine
[00:21:28] There was a vendor selling a little little model submarine here here yeah the guy with all the helicopters and stuff in his cars really i did not see i saw the helicopters and stuff the helicopters yeah the excavators earth movers and the buried in there was a little submarine or a rail-controlled submarine that had working ballast pump it's not very big it's maybe about four inches long or something really rechargeable but i just had to get it because i like to play with those kind of things so and then there's another vendor i bought some carbon fiber strips and things just to play with just some oddball stuff yeah i saw that there yeah and you bought the last 16×8 prop right
[00:22:02] No you just told me i want to tell you two or three other vendors that have props there's a few quite a few of them and they're from all over the place i'm from california get a 50 carbon fiber 168 for our trash can telemaster and i i lived on the edge today i paid 20 bucks to buy a lottery ticket oh to win that giant f-16 that they were ruffling off oh yeah there were not that many there was not
[00:22:29] Cars or not cars tickets in that box so yeah i can't remember the vendor i'm sorry but was that
[00:22:35] No extreme flight i don't think it was extreme flight i don't think it was extreme flight but it was a really large f-16 yes yeah it was 200 plus class engine engine for it and of course i didn't win but i thought yeah oh they did the drawing already they did a drawing yeah today okay and of course it's a beautiful f-16 xl straight into my veins man that was that was beautiful there's going to be a
[00:22:57] Go fund me for that yeah i was going to say that yeah whoever yeah whoever won that yeah they're going to have to do it well it wasn't for it was for sale it wasn't a raffle yeah this is a different
[00:23:06] F-16 this is the full full wing delta f-16 oh that's okay i jumped from the real a regular f-16 raffle to the f-16 xl which is a delta wing modification of the f-16 to compete with the attack craft back in the 80s and i always loved that aircraft i built i kind of packed a scratch built one many years ago very small speed 400 pusher electric it was kind of barely flyable but i've always had i've seen a real one too on in california and i thought it was just such a neat looking aircraft and somebody
[00:23:38] Made a jet version of it it's kind of big a little too big for my taste somebody needs to make one about half the size as electric edf and i i take a couple of them
[00:23:50] Okay all five of our listeners now are dialing their contacts with the companies to say okay fitz was just said he would buy two of these so five thousand dollars each we're making them
[00:24:02] No the half scale electric one that's a big yeah i get you
[00:24:06] Half size that's a yeah that's a good like i like the f-16 it's not my favorite airplane but if i would have won that raffle going back to the raffle i would have definitely
[00:24:20] Been happy oh yeah that's such a mighty fine piece of aircraft yeah and i have to reveal that i have a i have a special place in my heart for f-16s because many moons ago i used to work on them as well for the company so yeah yeah so we have to trade some war stories so yeah it always sounds pretty cool yeah i remember when we had the f-16s in
[00:24:42] Springfield before they got rid of them yeah they were always neat to see jets flying around
[00:24:46] Which you just don't see that anymore nope not in springfield no yeah we got bragged anyway
[00:24:51] That's a whole other story but speaking of f-16s he's trying to push a draco out of the way or something
[00:25:03] Dude and goliath there yeah the stuff these guys do when nobody's looking it's comical
[00:25:12] So ron where did you fly believe it or not the only two things i flew i did bring the shiny so i got a couple flights on that and then i brought the well the one you have to the the beaver or not the beaver my god the twin otter twin otter yeah on floats or on floats oh yeah i was hoping to meet up with you and fly them together we didn't oh that would have been nice two ships passing in the night i know like always passing but wasn't that neat i mean flying at the float ponder so i've never flown
[00:25:43] Off of floats before this ever and for those of you not not watching at home fitz just almost about his neck exactly that was that's what was missing well no i like we don't have a place around
[00:25:58] Springfield to where it's called water it's not as fun when it happens to me guys i am so glad you all those monorails in a way so anyway i have not had the occasion in in my history of flying to fly off of water and i really enjoyed it like yeah it's a lot of fun it adds a whole nother level to it
[00:26:24] See fitz has the umx twin otter and he put floats on it and he flew it in a puddle that's all you need ron he says wait for the rain and then go outside and just find a puddle exactly find a puddle
[00:26:35] I guess i need to get floats for my umx twin otter how did it go did you have successful flights any problems well i did not end up getting an airplane off of i didn't have to get in the boat of shame to go out and get my airplane so i call that a very big success which by the way folks the boat is
[00:26:51] Actually called the boat of shame it's got it's written on the side of the boat it's a retrieval
[00:26:55] Boat yes yes and the best thing is so as the week goes on the the battery for the trolling motor it dies more and more and so it's slower for them to get out and get their boats or get their flipped
[00:27:08] Airplanes to get back in there's ron plenty of opportunities to take pictures of people and i have
[00:27:13] So all you need on the boat is to put a bunch of ec3 or ec5 connectors on it and it would all the people flying with electric aircraft you have to supply supply your own battery
[00:27:25] There is a paddle in there though tommy said he's been in it a couple times i like i said i have
[00:27:31] Not just wanted to point that out nice really is that true that's absolutely you were in the boat of shame twice can you share those stories with us please once i was to retrieve an airplane for a
[00:27:44] Friend was not my airplane and then the second time yes it was to retrieve my own airplane yeah first time float flyer also well second time i guess i flew once way way way back in the day
[00:27:57] That doesn't count so make fun of him for not flying on floats because he's a lot older than i am truth
[00:28:02] Be told my first time flying on the floats out here i had to go in the boat of shame actually someone else got in the boat for me but good friends what was that it's a common tale it's a very common what was that the sea plane that we flew wasn't the one that greg let us borrow oh yeah the polaris i think okay there you go yeah but i flew my twin honor on floats had a blast and then fitz hilarious i don't wish we had video but fitz posted a video on instagram or a photo of my twin honor with his umx
[00:28:32] Twin honor he was buzzing my plane and doing donuts i mean high speed donuts in that little thing because the cg is so low i mean he was just all over the place and we had a blast flying those two
[00:28:43] Together yeah agree fits agreed okay he looks a little hesitant yeah i know come on yeah but flying off the water here is the the pond they call it a pond i mean it's it's a small lake let's be honest i mean it's huge and if you can't land your float plane on that body of water then you should probably fly with helicopters buddy with buddy box or something yeah it's a huge huge lake and
[00:29:17] Just like everything else here it's a first-rate facility yeah yeah easy to get to the shore yeah all
[00:29:24] Those little pilot stations yeah it's neat you see people driving rc boats yeah there yeah i saw a guy
[00:29:28] Fishing earlier yeah yeah yeah we saw some fisher people there were some rc sailboats out there
[00:29:36] A couple days ago too oh yeah that was a first for me as well yeah i've never actually seen an rc sailplane actually on the water sailing sailboat or yeah you guys really don't have water because
[00:29:47] There was an actual sailplane someone put floats on a radian yeah oh yes yeah yeah yeah no it did like we we saw him flying ours wasn't oh i wish i'd have seen your time yeah his motor gave out
[00:30:00] He got a boat of shame that's what the what the what one guy brought he told me he said he brought an a10 on floats no a seven-foot battleship oh did he really yes he said he was going to float it down the 3d area i hadn't seen it but yeah he said he bought a battle oh yeah we should mention 3d he's
[00:30:17] Got a pond too yes yeah the guys like to hit their tails in there and go crazy yeah that's when you
[00:30:21] Dunk it and there apparently there's a permanent memorial on that pond of an airplane that apparently
[00:30:28] Met its demise in that i'm pretty sure that it's steel and painted yeah there's no way no it can't be
[00:30:35] Balsa it would not last more than a week so i said memorial i didn't say it was a balsa plane you did
[00:30:41] Well when you look at it though that's what you assume because it's just a tail sticking out of the water right it's amazing so let's see one two three four five six and there's a radio behind
[00:30:51] Six now and a fire oh a fire yes a controlled fire yes it's okay speaking of fire combat okay how much
[00:31:00] Fun was that well it was great for me because i didn't lose anything in that did you but you competed i did how'd you do and i lost fantastically okay it was awesome yeah so i 15 seconds that's how long
[00:31:14] I lasted that's it that's impressive yep ron's got it on video though and it's a really really impressive glorious it was it was pretty good it and i needed a bag okay to retrieve the air how
[00:31:25] About the person who hit you or you hit flew right away flew right away it was one of those wings yeah
[00:31:30] So what happened was it happened so well 15 seconds well what were you flying first let's let's paint the picture of what it was so jeffrey arsenault and his crew from rhode island they brought planes with them with the specific purpose to fly in the combat sacrifice yeah exactly they were not planning in fact they did not want to take these airplanes home so they were going to do everything they could to make sure that happened so they flew wednesday these airplanes and they all survived and they're like well well the one you flew didn't survive well it it was minor
[00:32:05] Damage honestly it's still i repaired it crash and that was the deal joe told me hey i want you to fly this thing i said okay i'll repair it and i'll fly it so that's what happened and he called it an aquastar to me it looks like a kind of like a balsa usa laker but the motor wasn't on a pod it was actually built into the fuselage as a as a pusher so aquastar look it up i don't know it maybe that's what this thing was but it was all balsa electric powered pusher huge huge electric motors
[00:32:37] Six cell what was it well that was like a 2200 six cell that was you yeah they're like the red maroon
[00:32:45] Plane yes yeah you were on the other end i didn't know who that was that was me yeah that was spectacular
[00:32:49] Right yeah so they they count down three two one go and and and by the way this is a float plane with no gear on it and i did not get a hand launch was
[00:33:02] Now it's kindling yeah it's well it's probably even less than that it's like shrapnel now toothpicks but yeah they said go and the thing took off beautifully from the grass with with just the float the the hole of the fuselage and yeah i climbed out and made one circle and got hit by a flying wing and that was that it was awesome yeah it was yeah there's a lot of oohs and
[00:33:28] Ahs yeah i videotaped it so i might have the audio you might i'll add this to the podcast yeah we'll just
[00:33:33] Throw that in there yeah so i'll have to confess that that was my favorite plane i'm sorry well
[00:33:41] I i was hoping that it would make it and we could take it home also but really yeah i don't i like
[00:33:47] That one too well i'm really kind of sorry now if i've known you guys you're not you were smiling ear to ear right now i was it was so much fun i did my only regret is so i had a strategy and i was telling i didn't want to tell everybody my strategy but the strategy was when they said go i wanted to already have the motor pretty much spun up so that i could just hit go when they say go and be airborne and that's what happened and but my goal was to turn right as soon as i got airborne and try to
[00:34:19] Clip anybody who was trying to come on the flight line right well it took a little longer to get off the ground so i was actually past the runway because we were what 15 yards away from the runway so it got past runway and i made my right turn and of course missed everybody so now i'm like okay well i'm going to climb and i'm just going to dive through this there were how many airplanes 20 at least i would think at least at least 20 airplanes in this in this tiny little amount of airspace between the 3d electric line and the main line so my goal then was since my first
[00:34:54] Strategy didn't work out i was going to climb above and then just try to dive right through the middle and i made about two circuits in my climb and yeah this wing clipped the basically the right elevator which was also the control horn for the elevator took that off along with the bottom of the rudder which also had the control horn for the rudder so then i had no surgical strike it was like in the video you can see it it's like and it was instant yeah and then the airplane just straight straight down and i didn't i don't think i brought the throttle back at all because i was
[00:35:34] But i needed a bag to reach oh yeah it was awesome luckily there was a couple kids that walked out with us and used their hat as a back like they picked up all the little pieces put it in their
[00:35:44] Hat and just came out can i keep this maybe they did i don't know but no i saw them throw it away i don't think there's anything it could do with what was left of that no there was definitely no putting
[00:35:55] That one back together fitz didn't jeff let you fly was it a calypso glider yeah oh yes yes he let me
[00:36:02] Fly briefly during the combat yeah you got nothing and i got nothing but i did get his calypso going down yes because we landed to put more batteries in it's epic and then he yeah and then he took off again with it and then he lost his tail oh wow yeah they don't play too well without
[00:36:18] The tail no i got both both coming down it was pretty wild yeah and again the cheers oh yeah sacrifice we
[00:36:28] Demand sacrifice so yeah now that airplane will not be going home and jeff doesn't have his calypso and jimmy he his walrus he sacrificed that so that's not going home and then of course joe's airplane
[00:36:42] So mission accomplished so can we talk about some of the nice planes that were flying to combat yeah somebody had a brand new trujan edf the f-16 edf f-22 edf there was an f-22 i didn't see that one yeah so fairly small but very nice nice little cub on floats he was like why are you flying these
[00:37:01] Things what's wrong with you i got up and close up close and personal that f-22 when he was coming down in the first we didn't mention this but we had two dog fights because nobody was like hitting anything so we all came down changed batteries but when the f-22 came down man he came right across my nose i mean he was on this side of the runway and i was like hello hello but yeah they had that in there but i i was surprised with the the t-28 trojan the yellow one like dude and he only landed because
[00:37:27] He was out of battery he flew forever yeah no one hit him and like how did nobody hit the cub on floats
[00:37:34] I mean that's exactly it is huge slow target yeah so you mentioned that float plane that you guys have seaplane you liked i was sad when the air force version of the t-28 went down because i have one and i think it's the gray version of the t-28 trojan yeah that guy was flying that and he got
[00:37:51] His total man he got severed in half cool we took some pictures of the the battlefield of the carnage and it was oh my gosh there was so much out there there needs to be a ring that somebody's like paint
[00:38:06] A ring that everybody puts their planes into and there's you have to call that their ring something i
[00:38:11] Don't know i don't have the name on top of my head yeah and then at the end light it on fire yes the sacrificial to the sacrifice to the plane gods yeah so yeah that was my first that was my first go around with combat and i'm gonna build something special you're one for one i am all right keep
[00:38:29] That record one for one batting a thousand that's right stay out of my way folks or get in my way or
[00:38:35] Yeah please get get in my way yeah what is that timber looks like a timber night timber
[00:38:45] Yeah it's got lights on it sorry we can easily distracted by shiny objects lots of them that's the kid walking with a lighted up i am easily distracted by airplanes that's for sure i don't
[00:38:55] Know what that is that's flying over there but that little flashing green thing is pretty cool too oh yeah what is that i know i wish our listeners could see this aliens oh this is this isn't my
[00:39:08] Like terry possessing my body he's like okay we have listeners i know i'm sorry you gotta work on making sure you can describe the stuff you're like because like we do the recording on youtube and then so we'll post some photos every now and then and here he has to chime in goes so what are you showing
[00:39:22] Lee so yeah he's very good at that and i'm not so this is a flashing green and red airplane that's
[00:39:29] Flying in the air at night there you go close your eyes imagine if you will there was the other day it was real neat the guys had the parasail yeah the light shining up into the canopy the hacker guys yeah that looked really good he's a really majestic kind of parasail i mean you see everything here yeah it's and they were from germany yes like i loved listening to them talking about yeah so we
[00:39:50] Go who let that yeah okay here's my negative they run every drop of fuel in their jets on the main flight line they'll they'll have those planes up for 10 15 minutes they'll and then they'll come down the runway as fast as they possibly can with like bats out of hell no care for anybody else because i had plywood overcast in the air when two other jets were in the air and i was like holy
[00:40:14] Smokes man see that's my that's i kind of think the that main line like i i felt out of place with the trash can telemaster sitting up there since it is so what's what i'm looking for cheap i guess sitting next to these 25 000 jets it's like this is where they come to play we i feel can move into other areas that are not for the big boys t i don't feel that way at all i i i was thinking we
[00:40:49] Should share it's not like they they do a background check on you and find out how much income you make
[00:40:53] Before you can cross that line and i'm gonna be honest i never got the feeling that anybody was like why are you here why are you doing this like people that saw the plane sitting there they were all happy to see that kind of plan and there was a lot of pictures taken of them and all that kind of stuff too but just i i think it's like i see these other airplanes here and it's like
[00:41:13] You guys do that so we don't accidentally get in your way well i actually heard someone say are they
[00:41:17] Really going to fly that on the main line oh did you really see and you should have said yes well i think i told you all earlier is like we were saying some people might say well this is supposed to be giant scale aircraft like half of those jets that are flying right now are not scale exactly at all well 80 inches are bigger and those were perfectly fine yeah well but i think
[00:41:39] They were trying to stress the word scales like yeah no come on guys yeah but the future yeah i don't think a future like exists in the real world yeah bdx yeah yeah looks cool but gbr3 yeah i don't think
[00:41:54] So but so while we're jumping on planes what is something else that caught your eye here some of their plane whether it's a big giant scale or or 3d anything else you remember so i like watching
[00:42:05] 3d but i think for that line my favorite thing is the 3d jet that they do i don't know if you guys
[00:42:11] Got a chance to see that one i think it made a j10 is it the canard delta canard no well then that's
[00:42:17] Not the one i'm talking about there's one that that has that and does that yeah but that one doesn't
[00:42:22] Perform as well i don't remember what the kid's name is luke luca luca something or another but anyway he's got a a 3d jet that he i mean he it's amazing with the thrust vectoring he does a little corkscrew thing with a smoke on it literally looks like a corkscrew in the sky like i could just watch that all day there's something about just it's mesmerizing it is absolutely yeah so that would be probably performance wise one of my favorite things that i've seen plane wise though that that gb was pretty nice oh the big one the r3 was a really big one didn't make it the blue and
[00:42:59] White one then you can't it may have went in the trees before you guys got here oh i saw another gb on
[00:43:04] Line it was huge the red and white one must have been half scale oh yeah i know that was an r1 actually had a belt reduction drive yes yeah yeah that was so big yeah no ron's talking about the
[00:43:15] Gbr3 that was down way on this oh r3 okay this was r1 i think and yeah it was blue and white beautiful airplane took pictures of it and had a like a 111 or 120 mounted instead of horizontally it was mounted vertically because the cows on those are kind of elongated yeah so it was mounted vertically with this exhaust coming outside it was actually pretty cool yeah unfortunately that one met it didn't
[00:43:34] Make it demise there's one i saw on the ground i wish i seen in the air it was the concord somebody yeah over there yeah i saw that too that's allies is it really the concord did it fly though because i
[00:43:44] Only saw it static i didn't spend a lot of time up there so i don't know what all he flew but he's bought or brought a lot of his jets here yeah it was a twin turbine yeah
[00:43:52] That's the only thing i saw him fly in person and what yeah and you and you think like as soon
[00:44:06] As you hear well ali flew an aeroscout so immediately you're like oh well okay yeah sure it looked like
[00:44:11] It no he made it look like a 3d plane yeah absolutely i mean i was pretty impressed the plane that i own can do that right but i can't with an aeroscout yeah with another his invert i'm
[00:44:24] Just saying his inverted pass down the electric flight right right here was damn good with the aeroscout i mean yeah yeah i bet it was protesting all the way it was like 10 inches off the ground
[00:44:36] Steady as a rock and the safe was like push up
[00:44:40] They did say that safe and all that stuff was disabled on there have you flown an aeroscout yet though i have one yeah i brought it here they fly really well upside down they do like hands off upside down it's amazing yeah surprising they fly really well
[00:44:55] Period and that that is a fantastic little trainer i guess you haven't seen mine because i took no
[00:45:01] I did see you just got different color wings full disclosure i got mine secondhand from horizon when we were at air venture they were demoing some and they had a midair and we had all these pieces on the ground they said well we can't sell these so they gave them to me and my son and we had to go buy some extra parts and put them back together but the gear was totaled so i i ripped the gear off and just sealed the bottom so it's gearless and then i changed the prop to a three-blade quad prop and that thing flies like a bet out of hell it's awesome oh my gosh i bet
[00:45:31] That's cool no i didn't see that one that's different i don't know for me i think i think the the
[00:45:37] Stuff that that grabbed my attention every like when i could hear them it was an immediate head turn is this really really big radials that are here no matter what they're in yeah yeah like i've never i mean we've seen them i think we saw one or two of them when we were at the the street or fly in i think but here they have the big ones though right i was gonna say but here they have the big ones the well and then the val valak valach the lock the lock whatever it is
[00:46:09] Whatever's in ali's fly baby those like the sounds are what what i think i'm gonna go away with fond
[00:46:17] Memories of yeah there was a fucker wolf what had i think it had a monkey radio in it and then those things sound just so neat especially when they're idle yes or just off idle yeah have that
[00:46:28] Yeah it's a wonderful growl tool yeah what about you see there was someone who brought
[00:46:36] An electro streak and it was really nice i think terry would be so happy he got to see it up close because it was really cool a finished one like one that's built it was no i'm serious it it was a very nice plane oh well thank you for letting me it still is a very nice plane and this is a i haven't seen it yeah i left it in one piece yeah but this is for terry again we're giving a shout out terry terry you need to finish your electro streak because tom's is awesome he let me fly it flies so good but here's my story here's my joke this is for you ron because i don't think
[00:47:07] This part he hands me the transmitter i said so is this a bank and yank and he goes yeah okay because that's what i have i mean my t-33 is a banking my thunder lines being and he said yeah phil was next to me too okay so what is a banking to you to me you don't have rudder thank you so he handed to me i go flying i'm banking and yanking this thing i'm having a grand old time i said what really could use a rudder he goes well you have a rudder it's kind of like you never told i said he goes he goes i said banking oh it's got a rudder yeah it's kind of so i flew that whole
[00:47:39] Time but it flew great that's why i'm giving it credit expertly build nice covering the fact tom mentioned your your wife made the graphics or cut out the graphics she absolutely did it's it's really nice a lot of fun and now that i've got my hands on it darn it terry's gonna like say well you need to
[00:47:54] Build one you kind of want to build one yeah i do yeah i might have to they fly well from what i've seen and if they fly like the shiny then they are are good it flies just like a shiny with a rudder i thought you were going to say that because there actually was another electro streak here that we saw yeah somebody built yeah like 30 plus years ago yeah yeah i really wanted to get a picture of
[00:48:17] The two of them together say something like 30 years separate these two airplanes but i missed that opportunity but yeah he well it's funny we were sitting here at the electric line and and i saw that airplane it was black and it had a batman logo on the top which was kind of neat but black on the bottom and the top you can imagine blank silhouette the orientation yeah the orientation
[00:48:37] But anyways if i'm going to build a plane i'm going to fool everybody but say this is the top on the top and this is the top on the bottom yes that would be awesome yeah have your wife make those graphics for me i'll put them in there
[00:48:53] Yeah done yeah that's my electric or just say this is the top on the bottom and this is the bottom on
[00:48:58] The top i don't know sure i don't know i think i like lee's idea this is the top on the on both sides was it the top yes it says it is but anyway yeah so i fly by and it looked like a very familiar shape i was like i have to go ask this guy so he landed and i ran right out there i was like hey is that an electro streak he said sure is yeah and he built that from the great plains kit before they did the arf so yeah that was 30 plus years ago so still still flying was he flying it like see this
[00:49:26] Would make terry like all giddy was it a brush motor no he had converted it but he did tell me when
[00:49:32] He first built it he was flying it on seven nycads not nickel metal hydrides now that's seven cell nycad with a i think he told me he had an astro cobalt motor and see the next question would
[00:49:45] Have been was it an on off switch for the throttle probably back then like a little servo click on probably no you need to give fitz an evil eye now because he's got an electro streak that's
[00:49:56] That needs to be finished yeah i got the shortcut it's funny i actually had an actual electro street kit for the longest time and i figured oh i'm never going to get to this thing and i ended up selling it off and then a few years later you guys come up with the short kit in the in the the build and that competition just yeah that just that went away really quick but still it's like oh man you inspired terry i should have kept the kit so i ended up getting the shortcut and one of these years i'll put it together but it'd be nice to do modern equipment this was all terry's
[00:50:26] Idea by the way the electro streak thing because of the shiny right really yeah
[00:50:31] Yeah it was terry who who brought it to ron's attention that the the shiny was really kind of similar in shape and size and weight in fact it even looks like an electro streak so yeah terry turned us on to that and then next thing and then it turned into tommy wanted
[00:50:50] The shiny we couldn't find a shiny right so tommy said he was going to build one then i should build one too which i think pretty much was because he wanted me to cut stuff which i don't even think i did that for you did i oh no i did yeah you did yeah so dave cut his own dave is the one that cut his own because he wanted to get his done before everybody else which he did like a summer build but anyway so because of terry we did that build well some people did i didn't and started then also
[00:51:20] Because of terry i found another electro streak that was like an hour not electric i keep doing that another shiny shiny that was like an hour away from me yeah so like i said now i have brand new in the box yeah so i don't really need to build the electro streak anymore you can the only thing is
[00:51:37] I think the shiny power set was kind of mild same setup yeah i mean the one that the one that i have it's it's yeah that's why it's the same well electro streak you can kind of put your own stuff
[00:51:48] In it you can really hop it up yeah yeah and well go ahead i was just gonna say i didn't realize like the actual shiny arf comes pre-assembled like it has the servos and it has everything in it ready to go the motor the esc and all that yeah and the lights and i opened the box up just to look at it and i was like wait there's servos in this oh that's so much easier wait there's a motor in this oh this is
[00:52:11] So cool i was not expecting that at all yeah it was a it was a nice surprise when you opened that box yeah well it was a nice surprise that terry found that for you from where he lives poor terry
[00:52:23] Just a hundred miles away from you yeah me too we say that all the time now you guys need to egg him to go to best i need some help i need him to bring him down to best that's october that's so
[00:52:34] Far well not well duh you get on a plane well that's true wait a minute you're telling him the best is far when they drove here from texas a thousand miles yeah well that's true he can he can make
[00:52:48] It we're just they know how far it is this doesn't seem like it's a very long drive to me because i slept most of it i feel like i'm three hours away from home i'm gonna make up for this one tomorrow
[00:53:00] So if i can i'm gonna have fitz talk about the maxi lift i'm gonna switch gears real quick because he brought a plane and on the main line that was fun oh yes this is the seagull models maxi
[00:53:11] Lift from legend hobby this is an i think it was 88 inch high wing it's not a scale of anything it's just a high wing sport plane meant for about 35 cc engines but what's neat about this plane is it has a bomb bay cool on the bottom servo actuated bomb bay and a glider tow hitch as well on it nice so you can tow gliders and carpet bomb your field with whatever you want and so it's a subject of a article in model aviation and a future issue and we brought it here to join out for to get some
[00:53:46] Pictures through courtesy of lee ray this photography prowess and for me to main it i hadn't flown it yet and so i just finished it and so we we brought it up i i bought some army not really army man just parachute parachute people figures whatever to shove in the shove in there and so we took it up to the main flight line i think it was on wednesday right yeah yeah and so it was it's a brand new plane never flown it only run the engine a bit to get it tuned tuned in and broken in a little bit and the fly is fantastic it was really super easy plane to fly it flies like a trainer and so we flew
[00:54:20] Around and i i dropped the the payload fortunately well i'm going to interject here real
[00:54:31] Quick because one thing that kind of screwed us up anyway was someone crashed yes i was going to say and then they i mean he crashed it was a jet oh my god yeah let's let's jump on this real quick because fitz is flying this jet comes by he loses his canopy they say his wing disintegrated like he was doing a knife edge so we see his canopy fly off then the wing disappears and the jet just keeps on going down the runway and then they close their flight line and fitz is still flying so they're like trying to get fitz to hurry up and he's got the he's got the parachute guys he's like okay i'm
[00:55:00] Gonna drop them yeah yeah well it was kind of good that the flight line was clear so i was free to drop anything i wanted right so i could drop more debris so i flipped the bomb bay door open and two out of three come out i could sort of see the the third one kind of dangling as it's flying around
[00:55:18] Wait for me the joke the thing was fitz needed these photos so we're back in the rv he's writing his article i'm editing photos and i send the pictures he goes oh look you can see the third guy i said what are you talking about and i didn't even notice there's a little hand sticking out the last guy's like i didn't jump yet he whipped out it was great so i don't know if they'll use it but i hope that picture goes in the magazine i can't do it i can't do it i'm stuck i was like i'm
[00:55:44] Stuck so i would be remiss if i didn't mention that there is a giveaway going on for that plane not the one i built but from the company from legend hobby i think if you go to his website or go to we've had some advertisements around on i think on yeah ama ama legend hobby legend hobby rc roundtable rc roundtable facebook page and stuff you can go in it's free to enter and what it is is you visit various sites and the more sites you visit that's on the list the more chances you have to win this aircraft so you get the aircraft the maxi lift and
[00:56:18] A 35 cc engine to go along with it nice so you have to i don't know when you guys are going to produce this but you have to the end of the month end of may to enter and you can win
[00:56:30] Nice but i can vouch it's a mighty fine aircraft yeah that's cool it's good at everything but
[00:56:37] Dropping paratroopers apparently well actually i've been racking my brain for things to drop out of it
[00:56:44] So so it's gone all over the place so so my first thought was army men of course that's just cool the parachute man so i bought some on amazon i bought like a package of like 20 of them or something like that and then i found these little space shuttle things that you put together gliders that are really small and i want to drop out of it yes i'll probably do it in my home field i'm gonna i plan on doing a video of it as well for a youtube thing and so i'll probably put a bunch of these little gliders in it drop it i found some things that those kind of like firecracker things you throw in the ground they pop snap that was the first thing by the way that came to my mind is it
[00:57:19] Yeah i bought a box from off of ebay of those things oh so we have a paid runway one thousand snap box oh yeah i'm going to cover it and i was talking to a friend i have a friend who's kind of devious so i always bounce ideas off of him because he's not right that's the kind of friend to have that one friend he came up with the weirdest thing he goes hey you can buy like a five pound ball of silly putty
[00:57:46] They're like silly putty like what would i mean like a huge just ball and apparently if you drop it from a high enough height it just shatters when it hits the ground oh really yes i thought i did bounce yeah you would think a bowels are just bold no apparently they just shatter so i briefly thought about getting some silly putty but it was expensive when you buy like a 10 pound it was quite pricey so yeah i'm constantly looking for ideas i wanted gills used to make these foldable gliders they were like slingshot gliders you can fold over those
[00:58:19] And i was thinking we need to pack some of those in there they can unfold somehow or something but
[00:58:23] Apparently no longer available all right so listeners let's start sending sending those ideas in ideas what shall fitz drop from his maxi lift yes so just so they know how big is the compartment like
[00:58:35] How much they have to work with roughly brain measurement put you on the spot six inches wide i guess by eight inches long by maybe about three or four inches deep box what's like the size of a kleenex box yeah a little bit smaller yeah but yeah roughly yeah okay so i'm looking for things things to drop that won't hurt people
[00:59:01] Bouncy balls bouncy balls oh no i'm not cutting balls but bouncy balls on fire i didn't get to finish flaming cotton balls you guys ever played jarts when you were a kid the ones that you outside the long darts oh yeah deadly find some of those the the official game of darwin charles
[00:59:22] Yeah i don't know about that i played that when i was a kid but that was a lot of fun but dangerous
[00:59:28] Yeah yeah i think they're banned now yeah well they're different i think they have like big like
[00:59:33] Tips on them now they don't have they don't have the knife that they don't yeah yeah it was a big yeah
[00:59:38] Yeah that'd fit in there though it would well i don't know a jart might be too big for that
[00:59:44] I remember them being pretty size yeah they're pretty big 3d print some lawn darts under the
[00:59:49] Wing yeah i thought about pretty printing some things i poked around on thing averse or 3d printable little airplanes yeah knickknacks and whatever so whatever i don't know there's bomb looking
[00:59:59] Things on there too little bombs so that was your first flying at the main flight line right
[01:00:03] It was my first time flying yeah because i didn't fly to the main flight line last year so this is the first time ever i had to ask them some dumb questions like where do i stand where do i who do i look at that kind of stuff but they were real nice and helpful they said oh yeah just pick a spot here and stand over here that kind of stuff so i'd be amiss not to give a shout
[01:00:22] Out to the staff here yeah because when we went up there with our planes i went to talk to the flight boss and i told him what we were because that's great just just take three lines get to play fly together they were very generous so a big shout out to the triple tree aerodrome yeah staff we had
[01:00:39] Any incident volunteers greg and i my friend greg this thing with us we went up to breakfast yesterday morning and we just sat on the table by ourselves and one of the volunteers just walked up sat next to us to start talking to us today guys how you doing what you doing how you are you
[01:00:53] Liking everything just real personable well the owner of the place we were at the float flight line i think our first or second day full day that we were awake pulled up to you and started having a
[01:01:08] Chat with you right there in the in the pan harness came up to you yeah he came up he's like well how do you like the place and stuff and i was like well it's pretty cool it's first time here and stuff and then he introduced himself and i was like oh okay yeah i'm not with the big wigs yeah it didn't take us very long at all maybe he felt sorry for me because i was just sitting there watching somebody else but i don't know yeah but yeah it was it was a good conversation i like the the history behind this and there's it's just an amazing place to be and what surprised me because i asked him i was like
[01:01:39] How many rc events do you do versus how many full-size events because obviously this is a full-scale runway and he said it's actually about half and half half full-scale airplanes and half rc events
[01:01:52] So and during the the meeting they had on thursday night the ama helped sponsor that they were very generous about saying how much they're passionate about rc being part of this facility
[01:02:05] Because it is a stepping stone into full scale yeah well sure yeah yeah i could see that i missed that meeting i wish i was able to make it but i wanted to well big shout out to joyce hager 53 years
[01:02:19] With the ama 53 53 years and she she's retiring she likely retiring but she's moving to a house not too far from here so okay this will she'll still be coming here and hanging out so i i've been putting
[01:02:34] A name with a face now so she was one they were talking to at the main line i think it was wednesday maybe i remember what day it was but they were talking about how long she was with the ama and how much of a help she's been and how pretty much awesome she is and how much of a loss it's going to be with her not being there anymore 53 years it's a long time i mean i don't i don't know if you have
[01:02:55] Any friends who have been working at a job for over 30 years yeah you real well i guess if it's
[01:03:02] What you what you 30 i'm over 30 now years well you're old too it's impressive it'll be 39 when i
[01:03:11] Retire wow yeah not 52 though that's amazing yeah but when you do something you love apparently and
[01:03:18] It seems like she was very into what she was right she's seen him come and see him go yeah
[01:03:23] There's been a lot of people in the in the offices there so yeah yeah but they they appreciate her she loves us and and terry her her boyfriend yeah he does pylon did you see the pylon demo he did
[01:03:34] Yes pylon racing yeah i watched that oh yeah i heard it yeah that was that was quick that was very fast so so i i kind of reminded me i should mention that there are there were multiple seminars going on throughout the week here they may not have been the best to advertise but i guess they're on the website and things like that there's one we walked into one at the learning center on the futaba people were giving a seminar and the s bus and how to use it in different types of s i actually didn't know there were two different types of s buses because a unidirectional and a bi-directional s bus
[01:04:04] That they use were for sensors and stuff i thought it was kind of neat i think they had another one on getting into jet turbine flying one on aerobatics starts with how much money do you have yeah do you have both your kidneys
[01:04:20] So they do have a really nice learning center it's full of all kinds of neat stuff and i don't know if you guys have seen it did you guys we did not make it up oh you gotta check it out if you can it's just a neat room there's a room just filled with airplanes on the walls and there's a room with a bunch of simulators in there and there's a bunch of chairs and stuff for and the screens and monitors and so they can actually give presentations and stuff and so they actually had several on i had a few on my phone but every time my alarm would go off i was in the middle of something like no i can't leave now i'm doing something yeah but that was that's a pretty neat so it's it's a really well
[01:04:51] Rounded event here yeah just not just flying yeah i don't know why i never thought about putting
[01:04:59] A reminder on my phone to go do something because there were so many times i oh i want to be up there by three o'clock to see this or whatever time and then oh it's already seven o'clock at night and like i have noticed being here as long as we have like time just like does not exist like you wake up yeah and then you go to bed you wake up it's like what day is this exactly like you're looking back
[01:05:22] Trying to think what day something happened it just all goes together the day ends in y right
[01:05:28] Yeah it's amazing oh there's some cool looking wings going up describe them rainbowy white and red on the other side there you go i'll have one now you can hear them and now you can
[01:05:44] Probably oh yeah they're definitely wings yeah they're coming this way coming right forward they launch from yeah right down there they just hand launched them yeah well that's looks like
[01:05:54] The whole other area of the field there this is normal for this time of night yeah yeah yeah i think every night these guys come out yeah we're sorry yeah one of our listeners emailed us and called these a gaggle right like he said the late night gaggles happen he said buy an assassin come join us for the
[01:06:12] Late night assassin gaggle which that is pretty late we did not do well we attempted to
[01:06:20] Lee remember the one year best that somebody was flying the loudest biggest night flying at like four o'clock in the morning or something like this do you want me to continue the story because
[01:06:31] There's a part to it oh yeah go ahead oh so we're we're tenting on our end yeah we're camping out yeah and so it was like two in the morning but it was like that except big plane over our tents right over the tent i get i'm in i'm in my pajamas oh man i'm barefoot i walked down there and i the heck out of them i was like guys we're sleeping over here you're flying overheads go to bed and i was like oh you're the crotchety old man i was like come on two in the morning no it was it
[01:07:02] Was oh god o'clock in the morning yeah it wasn't like 11 o'clock midnight that we wouldn't
[01:07:07] Care but nobody was awake there's like 24 hour flying here like i mean you can get up at four o'clock in the morning oh yeah and you'll see something like not usually this loud but you can look out and see a radian or something like that i was just gonna say something like that yeah yeah
[01:07:24] Plus they have the dark patrol i guess every morning well he missed all that too yeah i can go
[01:07:29] For that as an alarm clock 5 30 6 o'clock okay i'll get my butt going but right two in the
[01:07:35] Morning yeah i get it well it's what's quiet hours supposed to be like no gassers from 10 at night to eight in the morning i think okay so yeah they stick to that they actually have like down there at the 3d line there was one night i heard a gasser late yeah i've heard some gassers pretty early
[01:07:56] Too they had a party or something at 10 o'clock was it last night oh no i can think it rained out radix throw down was yesterday yeah it didn't get rained out it was on okay here we go far away it was pretty cool that reminds me did you guys camp on site or you're in the hotel no we're camped way oh that's right you're down by the 3d line yeah so so yeah i guess maybe a lot of people don't know that this is a huge camping site people camp rvs really fancy stuff tents everything there's some hookups there's just lots of places to park somewhere wherever you want
[01:08:28] And so it's a real neat place just to camp there's a streamed out at one end like you mentioned the pond here you can walk around you can take your go-karts of course you need you generally need some personal transportation yes yeah absolutely it's a huge facility yeah it's very huge yeah you see all kinds of stuff
[01:08:44] I figured it out just today alone from the driving that we did is about 30 miles on the golf cart wow i mean it's it's ridiculous you it's just big well i'm gonna say we have a golf cart had a golf
[01:08:58] Cart and it turned in three days half a tank of gas already gone oh my gosh yeah mine's electric so it
[01:09:06] Was nice that i didn't have to worry about gasoline but then i had to worry about charging it every night yeah so so are they like you can't get it anymore is that why you had to turn it in or yeah they don't
[01:09:16] Offer them on saturdays i don't know what the reasoning arrangement is now they do offer shuttles so they'll continue to shuttle you down the road back and forth ouch but yeah we had to turn it in well you're in a good spot though because you're not too far from the e-line yeah and we have a vehicle so if we need to go up we can take my truck that's true but that's let's i was going to jump on that to have us all share now that this is your podcast too yeah and we've done this before so we've already had it but now that we're doing a new one have a refresher course what is some advice that you would give someone who hasn't been to joe nall which by
[01:09:51] The way you have to put joe nall on your bucket list if you're listening well if i could jump in just
[01:09:56] Real quick you mentioned bucket list so this was this has been on our bucket list for a little while and now that we've been here it's it's an annual event like it's no longer a bucket list
[01:10:07] Something we have to come to every year i agree like i do not want to i already told my wife that and she said that's fine figure out when it is scheduled off at work and she's giving me the the freedom to go yeah although i'd love to get her to come but i don't know if i can
[01:10:24] I'm gonna get a truck driver to let me drive my truck in my trailer onto the bed and then have them drive me so i want to be part of that that's number one no i mean first off it's a long drive from texas so my fellow texans get a buddy to to take that trip with you but i'm gonna say this and i know we didn't follow this rule last time because we just flew here but if you're going to come first time you got to get planes here because you just got to fly something yeah i mean i'm
[01:10:54] Right into a couple people said oh yeah i just came here to come watch dude you gotta fly something you gotta bring something so you should have to like ship it to your hotel yeah buy a plane or two ship it to your hotel put together bring it out here and come fly it wait you can ship here they
[01:11:09] Will receive really yeah they'll receive that yeah because a lot of space hacker and car models and stuff they're coming from overseas and they can crate ship stuff here and they will receive it in their warehouse here there you go in situ that's interesting yeah so we already mentioned it golf cart golf personal transportation and i have to mention there's some really interesting personal transportations yes you look around you see all kinds of cool
[01:11:34] Stuff people are driving many bikes with side trailers it's not a car but yeah it's just a
[01:11:40] A third wheel and a platform and that guy was everywhere i know we saw him all the time yeah there's a lot of good ideas that i've never thought of for transportation right here that are it's interesting to see yeah what people come up with so what i i in a different episode that we recorded earlier unfortunately for well not unfortunately for us fortunately for us we had jeff arsenault and he was i pretty much called him tour guide barbie because he met our camper guy he told us exactly
[01:12:11] What to expect what we need to do what we need to bring and he made it easy like very easy on us
[01:12:16] Absolutely and we'll give credit to jeff too he was the one who encouraged us to get an rv this year oh
[01:12:22] Really yeah well way to go jeff but like having somebody that's been before is that's a good thing if you can talk to somebody that's been before you're now one of them i know so we will have like on our episode where it's just us tommy talking about kind of our wrap up and and all that for we need to kind of make a list on what you need to do okay because i can't remember everything now because that's the other thing like i have been so sleep deprived this week like i just feel scrambled
[01:12:56] But in a good way because it's so exciting i mean like how can you not be amped up with everything going around here i agree
[01:13:06] Sorry that that guy playing with his motor was annoying as heck oh i don't know if y'all heard it but boy that was just like making me twitch there's a discharge of death you will fly no power you will fly no power so tom any advice
[01:13:24] You'd give new people come to joe no i mean yeah bring a plane even if you have to ship it here even if it's just a umx of some kind bring like if you're a nitro guy like me really the only place available to fly nitro is on the pond nitro is probably not going to fit in on the main line
[01:13:46] Unless it's interesting top that's a good point because there's really no place to fly nitro here
[01:13:50] Unless it's a speed on the speed circles the control line there's a lot of nitro there but nitro rc get yourself if you if you've got a stick or something like that and you're really a die-hard nitro guy do like i did put it on floats or find a cub a nitro cub on floats that's and it's a great place to fly too i really enjoyed flying off the pond with my stick so that would be my first kind of set your expectations appropriately don't don't think you're going to bring a 58 inch stick here with nitro just fly it like
[01:14:23] Everywhere you're not probably going to be able to do that yeah yeah bring electric because honestly
[01:14:29] Like this e-line is like very laid back very there's no very expensive airplanes here so you don't feel
[01:14:36] Bad if anything happens yeah i agree yeah bring a wing like a flying wing if you've got a flying wing with lights at night and these guys you could you could hear behind that they're having a lot of
[01:14:48] Fun and that is a lot of fun yeah bring a plane that you can do combat and take tom out yes
[01:14:52] That's your goal next year take me out i've got plans i'm developing plans for what i'm going to bring next year for combat bring lots of money yeah that's the other thing really yes do you spend a lot of money yes really okay i didn't i hardly spent any food was about all i bought i bought a radio that'll do it so that's what ron means bring money to buy stuff yes yeah well in all fairness there were
[01:15:20] Some pretty good discounts on all the stuff even from some major vendors but you don't have to buy
[01:15:24] Stuff to have a good time absolutely here you can you can bring your electric plane and fly it yeah
[01:15:30] Have a good time but don't be to the point where you want something and don't have cash for it
[01:15:35] That's that's a downer to you that'll be bad i didn't i didn't yeah i come here to and i guess it depends i didn't come here to buy anything i came here to fly well i never go places to buy
[01:15:47] Anything but then i find stuff yeah i didn't come here to buy anything i brought money just in case i
[01:15:53] Found something well true you never know there's people selling stuff oh yeah i mean there's a bunch
[01:15:57] Of planes on the side of the road yeah yeah oh yeah yeah everywhere you look there's something for
[01:16:02] Sale i agree yeah but what about you guys what are your thoughts i'm buying stuff for no i'm like
[01:16:11] I'm not like what you want to somebody who's coming for the first time your recommendations
[01:16:15] Well because you have the benefit of experience over well and yeah i'm going to say we we've had the benefit of both coming for a few days and coming from the final days and i think what's this it hasn't happened yet it's friday but we thought this would last longer on saturday like go through the night but really kind of like seph seph cut out early too a lot of people leave midday saturday to head back home and like i'm not used to that we have an event in texas best and i mean it's saturday's the heyday people spend the night saturday night because we're flying at night
[01:16:45] And everything so it's kind of weird for me to have people leaving on a saturday so that's that's something i'll find out tomorrow on how quiet it'll get here and is it worth staying through saturday because you guys are leaving before us we're leaving tomorrow hopefully dark and early yeah and we're not leaving until sunday because we thought we'd have some more time yeah i mean i was saturday but i'm gonna say that too if you have time to kill and you want to get some flying in stay through saturday because half this place is going to be gone yeah that's true but we mentioned the golf cart you got to have some time of transportation bring something to fly
[01:17:18] There's tons of electricity here so you have a place to charge oddly enough thursday it was kind of bad weather it's all rainy and stuff but we had a good time yeah we hung out with people and talked so bring a jacket yes okay so didn't expect it but yes yeah bring a jacket just throw it in there somewhere because last year when i came i didn't i didn't bring even jeans and i just brought shorts it was like in the 40s or something like that but it's been weird here i mean the temperature change has been pretty drastic but having a jacket would
[01:17:49] Be a mandatory thing bring a smile on your face because boys this is field of dreams
[01:17:55] For rc it really is laurie that's my wife yes she said this is your disneyland and like after i thought about it's like i'm not really into vacations at disneyland and that sort of thing but sure enough this is my disneyland it's like i'm like in like it's like an rc mecca here and it's everything i hoped it would be and more yeah and the funny thing here is when you have an airplane
[01:18:22] Strapped to the top of your golf cart going down the road nobody looks at you funny nobody it's
[01:18:26] Normal it is it's like it's more like why did i think of that well i the funny thing is that you
[01:18:33] Said that is like we had plywood overcast split into two pieces in two different golf carts i saw that
[01:18:37] Take it to the main line that was impressive yeah it's it's yeah it's just pretty darn cool here
[01:18:44] There must be an alarm for something you're missing if you if you come and you want to watch and i'm not trying to i don't know who i'm really talking to here there were a lot of people here that i saw that really just wanted to sit and watch they didn't want to do a lot of flying if they did it was like one or two times but they said they're they wanted to come and sit and watch so bring chairs yes bring comfy chairs and comfy shoes because during the noontime thing which but i liked it i just don't think i would do it every day but the noontime demo was spectacular some incredible
[01:19:14] Pilots young and old but you want to sit there in a chair get comfortable and watch because it does tend to run for a long time yeah but it is amazing and just the i can't do my i'm showing my little cha-ching the the money on that main flight line is wow yeah wow it's amazing break sunscreen too
[01:19:35] Sorry good point random thought okay well i was thinking about when we were on the flight line i think it was wednesday there were no clouds most of that day and yeah we i got a little burnt because i didn't want to leave the flight line i wanted to watch the show but yeah you want to put sunscreen on sunscreen it would be a mandatory item along with a jacket and a hat
[01:20:00] And a hat yeah for guys like us fits advice for new people don't know if i can add anything you
[01:20:08] Guys pretty much covered it all i think i don't think i can offer anything what about so this is
[01:20:18] Completely off topic which is par for the course for me yes maidens at joe knoll like i read somewhere that you're not supposed to do that but there were probably more maidens this weekend than than i've ever seen at any event well fitz said he maidened his did he did he really say that i don't know i heard that he had flown it once it could either confirm or deny but like i mean think about it like people who buy the the horizon stuff here obviously they're going to bind it and fly it oh yeah absolutely so
[01:20:49] Like how do you how do you police that i don't know what he does yeah well as we i had a conversation
[01:20:59] With someone about this so you're not supposed to maiden anything at a sanctioned event that's the key that's actually written so you should not do that at a sanctioned event but on the other hand if you are a skilled pilot and you're getting purchasing like a umx plane or something with safe and so forth right and you're purchasing it right from the manufacturers like right down the street you'll probably be okay in fact it was one guy bought he goes i just bought a plane that i already have because i wanted a second one why is that any different i'm fighting so i it's a
[01:21:30] Slippery slope boys but yeah be careful be smart yeah does flying an airplane that you've flown many
[01:21:38] Times on just hypothetically on gear and then you put it on floats and fly it here on floats the first
[01:21:45] Time is that a maiden that's not really it's fun man i mean okay see look you're getting both sides but i have to say because who are we talking to i was you were your first time to fly on floats right yes and you had a fun experience right yeah was it entertaining absolutely okay there you go i mean i mean it's you got to try somewhere right and why not do it in front of other people like your buddy tom where he can just egg you on and i didn't have to go out in the boat
[01:22:10] There you go no i he was talking about his he's had his stick for i don't know i've had my stick for
[01:22:15] Many many years and he's never been on floats so i put an old pair of goldberg cub floats on it and flew it here for the first time on floats so does that count as a maiden not really but it's an airplane that's but it did it maiden well i mean it flew fine yeah it flew great oh okay yeah i didn't have any problems with it that was like the fifth sixth seventh flight that
[01:22:39] He oh okay he landed a little hard and dunked it okay it was a wingtip you didn't tell me how i
[01:22:44] Thought it happened like right after oh no no i'm sorry no no no no i consider that more of a soft
[01:22:49] Maiden soft maiden okay we'll run with that okay well agree close we got passes motion yeah motion
[01:22:57] Pass or yeah that's whatever it is on a way off topic by the way i have to weigh in i don't remember who's on what side but on the battery is where the the velcro the soft side of the velcro goes okay
[01:23:13] All right is that we're doing battery is soft i don't remember if that's the hook or the loop i think that's the loop that's the loop so your loop is off loop on the battery on the battery tom i'm trying to think of is a soft fuzzy on the battery i think so yeah on mine yeah as it should be yes okay you are all wrong no you are all i couldn't remember who it was it was the weird one or summer child terry and fits are wrong
[01:23:43] And i don't know what my answer was which by the way i won it's like you go to the manufacturers and find out what they put on and the manufacturers put on the hook they do on the aircraft they do you're
[01:23:52] Wrong no they're wrong no i don't want to hurt my hand when i pick up my battery i want nice soft fuzzy things on my fingers when i move my battery but yeah and i don't know if it was you or terry that
[01:24:03] Said this but this is like when we had we had this discussion in our podcast yeah it's like yeah but if you have the hook on your battery and you put it in your car's carpet or something it'll stay there i'm like so what that's just that just happens to be the why would you put your battery on your car's upholstery it's because he did okay okay so okay fitz your turn this feels to me i'm sorry this
[01:24:23] Feels to me like the whole how do you put the toilet paper on the roll argument yeah you
[01:24:29] Look at the patent yeah the patent says forward yes and what does the patent say about putting
[01:24:34] Velcro on battery well it depends of course the patent is opposite if you have a cat yes it depends if you have a cat or not
[01:24:45] So why do you say why do you say we're wrong what evidence do you have fits what else do i have yeah you don't because it's convenient okay that's how i accidentally did the first time so i made everything match permission to treat this witness as hostile thank you wrong all right so yes for for the people who listen to rc plane lab what did you have you already
[01:25:11] Done this i guess no no like i haven't like honest to god i haven't never given it any thought which piece goes where i just slap two pieces on there and make sure that the opposites and off
[01:25:23] I go but well wait well the first thing is well like it is convenient for you can actually hang the battery on things and the carpet on the walls and that kind of stuff if you drop it on the ground it's easier to clean the hook than it is the loop i've never hung my battery on a wall oh no my battery is sitting on my walls though so are you never holding them you don't do it all the your batteries i did it all the time back of my car had a carpet and i stick the charged batteries in the wall the uncharged ones would go on the floor it was a nice organizational thing well i guess
[01:25:54] I can see that but that's still weird i i did an unscientific test on our poll we did it on our facebook page we win we win yeah you should you could do your own but i'm just saying it's soft and fuzzy
[01:26:07] On the battery well all my buddies are dropping off a bridge i'm just gonna look and laugh at you that was number one to go with the crowd so he's also an anderson power pole guy so they're awesome really well not anymore i wean myself off of them but i still have a high respect for them yes and i use them in other projects low resistance yes real resistance connectors a lot of power they're modular low resistance jeff still uses them oh really yeah i saw that i was
[01:26:38] The shape of your jib they're they've been called many things over the years i've always called them light speed because that was the name of the yeah there's been different brands yeah like yeah power
[01:26:49] Anderson anderson power sermos with sermos yeah but it was funny because i've seen them the ham radio guys love them because i'm used in ham radio stuff and i walked into a lab that was used by a nasa contractor and they were using those connectors so nasa uses them so they must be good enough for nasa good enough for them yeah yeah but they're they're kind of older now but i still like i have some oddball stuff i use them on still all right so let's get back to joe knoll
[01:27:23] Joe knoll yeah sorry that was my fault where were we took us off on something about things velcro yeah velcro that's not even joe knoll either sorry yeah well i was thinking about batteries putting them in planes because of joe knoll and that's what made me think of it okay well you do whatever
[01:27:40] Works for you then which is kind of where i'm at which is right most smart people do is put this now you had to go and do that yeah they're being magnanimous and you gotta go
[01:27:50] Stab the knife in to each their own but you're still wrong
[01:27:56] Some some people really appreciate being right or wrong and some people just don't care and i'm kind of in the second camp there yeah you use bubble gum as long as the battery stays where i put it
[01:28:07] I really don't give it well it's like terry making fun of me who i sent him a picture of i went overcast and he goes gaff tape because i use gaff tape to keep the wings on i was like it works just be quiet it's mine now if you were here you could do it your way exactly

[01:30:35] I don't know if you touch the top three they're very long that's the intro music the tool of the
[01:30:45] Week button and then the outro music yeah i wonder maybe this is how we end we got to tell this fancy setup you have here we're i imagine that was really close by the way oh yeah heads up
[01:31:00] Shield shield okay that was within 10 feet that night rating it looks like it's about to go i think his

[01:31:20] Of the table i know we didn't see that yeah at least we can see it coming you guys are in for
[01:31:27] Surprise i'm not sure i'd want to see it coming actually i'm going to do a shout out to ron because
[01:31:31] This setup is really cool man this is nice audio we don't have this fancy stuff and we talked about you guys are able to do it with each other we're remote so we're using our own mics on youtube and and stream yard it's rolled by this control panel but yeah we have we have we found this table in the shed we were sitting on our chairs outside in the beautiful i mean it's nice right now it's like what 71 that's perfect absolutely and we probably could go on for another hour or two if we just wanted to keep hammering about rc but velcro and velcro but all good things must come to exactly
[01:32:06] That's true but i wanted to thank you guys for meeting up with us because we just kind of mentioned that and say hey let's get together and do a recording we're going to share the same audio file for both of our podcasts and we're glad to have met you in person yeah we're glad to have met a lot of people who've heard of us and and it was a pleasure to let you guys fly plywood overcast and just have that fun at the main flight line we appreciate it memories that i will definitely
[01:32:32] Never forget for sure yeah thanks for letting us join in in your podcast adventures oh sorry
[01:32:39] And i failed to mention i got to fly twin timber oh yeah finally the running joke was like we don't have enough twin timbers but my hey what another shout out phil tallman district vp had a blast hanging out with him here at joe knoll i've we've been he's a listener of our show but we've just become friends he's been giving terry goodies like he finds these astro flight motors and stuff and ships into terry and i have another box for terry that phil brought me but he talked with the horizon guy says what this crazy guy named lee he didn't get to fly a twin timber can
[01:33:12] You please like appease him and shut him up and sure enough we got to go out there and fly the twin timber and thanks sean from horizon for letting me do that so that's my little last note there that
[01:33:22] Was awesome no they're i'll be honest the horizon guys that i have met and stuff they're all very cool guys down to earth really good guys to hang out with so and very professional like even even
[01:33:34] When they're like air quotes off the clock that you just very professional hey there's
[01:33:41] Another paraglider there's your powered parachute yeah or yeah i always call it and those are big by the way have you seen them up close like actually what's that when we're done here we'll go look i think it's like almost two meters on that one of the biggest one they have is 2.6 or 2.8 meters really
[01:33:57] Well that's pretty big yeah and i think that's the big one and there's a technique to launching them
[01:34:02] They can be tricky to launch yeah you really get it down yeah but when you figure it out it's not bad to do as long as the wind is good yeah yeah i watched plenty of people do it incorrectly and i was able to launch dave's for the first time successfully oh nice so i have that under my hat yeah did you see the wing just the light go off on that one yeah i did too i was scared wait where'd it go yeah you
[01:34:28] Don't want the light that goes off wrong switch it's an invisibility all right yeah so if you're a
[01:34:37] Listener and you've been listening to us talk about the airplanes we're looking at there's like i said you have to see it you have to be you have to yeah you have to make a sorry
[01:34:47] Make it happen but yeah so i agree okay we're good we're good we're good well i'm gonna say good night me too good night so long farewell thanks for listening goodbye peace out peace out
