[00:00:05] Hello everyone and welcome to the RC Plane Lab podcast. I’m Ron, I’m Tom and I’m dave. We’re recording a little bit earlier again. Yeah, it’s wednesday night. Wednesday, tomorrow is halloween, which that reminds me. Should we re-release the halloween episode? I think so. So if you’re listening to this when it comes out, that means yesterday we re-released the halloween episode. Let me make a note of that because I’m not going to remember.

[00:00:41] Use the pen that dave took from me. It’s because you were clicking. I was doing that on purpose, yes, and he took it away on purpose, yes. So what’s up? Not a lot. It’s been slow like. It’s been very, very windy, although we did get some flying in last weekend.

[00:01:03] Dave and I did, yeah, and daniel, okay, you can tell me all about it, because I don’t know. Actually I have not talked to you about it, but we went out the weekend before we did. All of us, yes, but anyway, first, if we’re not talking about anything other than flying, I wanted to circle back on what we talked about- whether or not airplane markings are offensive- a couple episodes ago. So we actually had a lot, a lot, a lot of feedback on that. We did with the general consensus saying:

[00:01:40] What do you think? Well, so I guess I shouldn’t, yeah, so, the general consensus being that it’s okay as long as it’s historically accurate, right. So I feel the most of the people that we heard from were kind of on our side of things. There’s a few exceptions, but, yeah, there were a few dissenters, but there were by far majority and they pretty much said it’s best not to use the swastika. But I would say what 90 of people that we heard from of the responses we

[00:02:13] Got yeah I’d say a very high percentage okay we’re we’re sort of aligned with our way of thinking yeah.

[00:02:20] If it’s historically accurate, then it’s probably okay. Yep, so, and then the resolution of what brought this whole thing up- that’s what we want to talk- was Reggie’s airplane. Yeah, he returned it. Oh, he did.

[00:02:33] Yes he returned it interesting that’s the story I got from him he said he took it back and when I.

[00:02:40] Asked him why he didn’t just pull the markings off, he said that he would prefer somebody that can appreciate it in its unadulterated form, with swastikas as the natural state that the fw 190 would come in. He would prefer to go to somebody like that would appreciate it for what it was and he didn’t want to bastardize it by taking the stickers off. I think he was just lazy and didn’t.

[00:03:09] Want to deal with it, to be honest with you, but that’s, yeah, that’s. I don’t know. That surprises me that he that, he that he took it back. But okay, I mean, that’s his decision to make. So

[00:03:24] Well that’s the story I got so for what that’s worth yeah that’s what he told me okay no that makes.

[00:03:31] Him happy, he’s more comfortable, yeah, apparently. So. Therefore, yeah, if he’s good to go, yeah, if he’s. That’s his opinion exactly. If he’s not comfortable with it, then he probably did the right thing.

[00:03:39] There is no right or wrong thing I think on that one it’s whatever their personal preference is.

[00:03:43] Yeah if he was feeling that he was going to upset people and doesn’t want that sure then yep.

[00:03:48] I get that all right all for you Reggie moving on all right so that’s the resolution on that.

[00:03:55] Okay, we do have a tool of the week this week. Yay, we’ll talk about a while later. Yeah, maybe it’s tool of the month, tool of the year, I don’t know what. Tool of the episode? No, we don’t do it every.

[00:04:07] Episode well we don’t say tool of every episode we could just say tool of the episode but the.

[00:04:12] Week you’re listening so much better that’s true plus we already have the jingle that just sounds.

[00:04:17] Stupid of a tool the episode no we’re not doing that but anyway we’ll talk about that in a little.

[00:04:22] Bit, yes, but regale me with some stories, what like? Well, yeah, so last weekend, let’s go back to the weekend before that. Oh okay, but I do it because I like stick in order, or else I’m not going to remember. Oh okay, he’s very linear, isn’t he? Yeah, I’m very, very linear. Well, go ahead and start us off.

[00:04:39] Well you went to eli yes now I remember so that’s why this line of reasoning yes that way we’re going.

[00:04:47] Like I said, in order of what happened. So we went, well, we all went saturday, yes. And then I went back sunday, correct? Why did I go? Crystal had something she had, oh that’s right. She had a baby shower she had to go to, that’s right, in champagne, yep. And so I figured, hey, what a better time for me to go back over there to fly some airplanes. And then I have one- I need to take some pictures of that- the f-22. So she came over and we got some pictures of that. I figured she’s driving literally right by the place, less than a mile away from actually, if you’re going just over to the interstate, you’re probably, as a

[00:05:21] Crow flies yeah it’s like 600 feet maybe more than that but maybe so anyway very close yeah that was a.

[00:05:27] Good excuse to go two days in a row yeah and as always good times were had by us so much fun there.

[00:05:33] Like I it’s, it’s a full day thing that I don’t ever feel like I get enough flying in. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. But what else? Lots of flying, lots of flying. Telemaster, what was a? What did you?

[00:05:47] Find it was a multi what did you fly when you fly of my power source day for me yes but when you have.

[00:05:53] All three represented I’ll get to that god fine it’s like a jeez I know I feel like it sometimes yeah.

[00:06:00] Yeah, so down to piper’s level. Sometimes. I flew all three power sources. I flew nitro, I flew gas and electric. That day it was a glorious day, and I also I guess four, if you count the fact that I flew Ron’s jet. Okay, there, go ahead. Are you happy? Yeah, I mean Ron, let me fly his jet. Finally, I am happy that the first jet that you flew was owned by me. Why is that? I feel special, oh, okay, yeah, I didn’t really have a preference. I didn’t care which, my, my, really that hurt my only preference, the only I don’t want to.

[00:06:37] Say requirement- I’m not sure what the word is- request. Maybe that I have when it comes to flying jets is that I made my own jets when the time comes, if that makes sense, yeah, so yeah, thank you for.

[00:06:53] Letting me fly your jet. Yeah, I’m just the opposite. I’m absolutely okay handing the well and I guess, now that I’m past that first one, I don’t necessarily care to have anybody else made in mind, right, but with the setup on that, with all that, I hear the cats running upstairs. But I don’t, I didn’t mind having

[00:07:10] Somebody else? Yeah, in that airplane for me. Yeah, I get that and realistically, probably somebody will made in mind for me because I obviously won’t have my waiver. Probably it’s quite possible that’s.

[00:07:24] True, like I said, you can use my airplane, you can do it, and it might take a weekend or two. He’s got to finish that first, though. So well, that’s true, I’m not holding my breath, but anyway, yeah, fly is.

[00:07:35] Very nice that I, like I’m- I don’t want to say I’m shocked, but I’m very impressed with that synapse. I mean it is just super locked in synapse, with the design of the airplane right, the whole, the whole.

[00:07:52] Way it’s set up it’s just it’s a very well behaved yeah very well I’m very happy with it yeah it reminds.

[00:07:59] Me of flying a like a late 90s pattern plane and I know depression I got when I flew alleys, yeah, and I know dave, yeah, could, could understand what I mean by that. But it just it goes exactly where you expect it to go. If that makes no bad tendencies, nothing, well, I mean, I didn’t really get to explore the envelope very much but I have a little bit more short fly time but, yeah, what a good rock solid airplane that is. So now you’re so, thank you. Oh, I was ready to get your own, but I’m ready.

[00:08:31] Finished. I really, really am fired up to get mine going. And here comes winter- yeah, it’s perfect time for it. Obviously I need an engine still and some of the ground support equipment, but I’ll get there, yep and I, but I’m super excited about it. Yeah, if mine flies anything like yours.

[00:08:50] I’ll be super happy and I’m sure it will I think it will it’s a it’s a good flying airplane from what.

[00:08:55] I’ve seen too. But yeah, so I flew your jet, thank you. And then, yeah, I took the Telemaster to fly that, so that was awesome- offered you to take the sticks and you- almost- I was, you almost did it, I was so close. But I just I don’t know. I mean, I mean you were actually walking up and I was getting ready to hand you the transfer and then you turned around and walked away. Funny thing is, I was walking

[00:09:17] Up to take the transmitter from you. Why did you turn around and walk, I don’t know, like I. I had the jet there and I think I was more excited about that and other airplanes. I was just like it’s a big goofy trainer. I mean, yeah, I mean that’s. I think that’s the thing, like it wasn’t. It flies super exciting I.

[00:09:33] Mean it flies itself. I mean it, yeah, and it’s fun to do things with it, like the one wheel cub thing and trying to land in a crosswind or play with the flaps even. I mean it’s just dave says it needs oil on the wheels but it’s a little squeaky anyway, yeah, I flew the Telemaster. What else? I flew the big cub finally for the year with the sato one, or, I’m sorry, the os 120 glow twin on it that flies. It sounds good. It does sound nice that engine, by the way.

[00:10:08] Has onboard glow, an onboard glow driver, but I rarely use it in flight. That’s how good that engine run, os, yeah, yeah. So anyway, I’m like my sato, yeah, that thing, you could talk about that anyway. And then, of course, the vipers. I took both vipers, the 70 and the 90, and man, those things are.

[00:10:31] So much fun. Yeah, actually on sunday, when I went back, I took the viper, I took everything with me. I didn’t even put the viper together, believe it or not. Oh, that’s right, you didn’t. Well, you weren’t.

[00:10:44] There, so you wouldn’t know. I wasn’t there sunday, but did you? Oh, you flew it saturday. I did just a couple times, but I’m gonna get the 64 millimeter version. Am I? Yeah? No, really okay, are you? No, I’m not, oh, really, I mean, that’s how you said. That’s me. Well, it’s surprising because you, because you, you really like it- no retracts, like I think that’s 64 millimeter, you’re probably not gonna no, and that’s.

[00:11:08] Fine, okay, like I, I understand that size doesn’t come with retracts and stuff, and you’ve completely forgot what you were going to say, weren’t you, didn’t you? I was going to write it down and I forgot before I got to write it. So, what were we talking about? Let’s back up, because I don’t remember what we were talking about: the vipers, you flew those. That’s what we were talking about. And then I think then you got an idea that you wanted to write something. Yeah, it’s okay anyway.

[00:11:29] No. So I ended up taking the f-22 and I flew that a few times. I think I’ve got eight flights on it now, eight or nine. It’s a fun little airplane. Feels like it could use just a smidgen more power, but I can’t complain about it. Plenty power for hand launches and that kind of stuff, not a lot of area underneath to actually grab it to throw it. F-22 is very slick underneath. It’s hard to throw, yeah. So I haven’t flown it yet without the gear on, so the gear kind of gave me.

[00:12:02] Something as a like a backup, to kind of put my finger behind. So I had a something to fling it with when I did the, the hand launch, but I had. So when we were there saturday, one of the guys at the field was there and I asked him ever so, or ask him if he would just maiden- well, not really maiden. So I had the 50 millimeter habu. I had that set up with the, the stock setup that they had, that you get on the receivers, yeah, and so I ended up taking that, erasing it, putting up to the AS3X+ plus.

[00:12:35] And then starting from scratch. So I asked him if he would show me how to set it up from scratch, because I wasn’t now, granted, I could have read the directions, which I- why would you ever do, which I have not done, or watch the wikis or any of that stuff. Yeah, but anyway. So I asked him. I turned into that guy that just, instead of doing it on my own, ask somebody else the question. But before I got to him I had the, the setup done right to where I had the, the top.

[00:13:13] Trim buttons. I had those set for the AS3X+ gains on one and then I had the stop lock release rate on the other. So where I was messing up was I was starting with the stop lock release rates low, so that starts all the way high 100 and then AS3X+ rates start at zero. That’s what I was doing wrong, but anyway. So he flew it, got it all taken care of with. I don’t remember what we ended up with number wise, but the AS3X+, you fly it until you get the single bounce, like you’re if it bounces a couple.

[00:13:48] Climbs back and forth and it’s too high, too high. Turn it down to where you get a single bounce, like when you just let go of the stick fast, right, and then after you get to the single bounce, then you re or you lower the stop lock rate until that bounce goes away and then you’re done. It’s very fast, nice. Yeah, so had him do that for me. On the like as of the 50 millimeter. Habu ended up flying that one a lot that day like that. Yeah, you had me fly it too after it’s a fun air, like a lot of those are, and

[00:14:19] You don’t, I don’t know you forget about them because you move on to something else and you go back to you like that’s a fun airplane, but anyway. So after setting that up, I did the same thing on my own on the f-22. Okay, and now that’s set up correctly. He also showed me the basics on how to do the hand launch control, hand launch mode. Yeah, that is so. I mean, that is slick, that is sweet. So I have that set up not only on habu now but also on the f-22, and AS3X+ plus is really what, where that I mean.

[00:14:50] What makes that shine? Like the previous versions of AS3X+, they have the hand launch sort of figured out, but with the adjustability of it now, so they didn’t really have hand launch.

[00:15:02] Available okay. So I’ll say I don’t know this for sure, but from the conversations I’ve had and the things I’ve seen online, I’m pretty sure AS3X+ plus was in, like the f-14, because I’m pretty sure that’s the first one that had the hand launch control. Or the f or the sr-71, I don’t remember which one came out first. Those both had the hand launch okay built into them. Those were locked obviously from the factory. The receivers were that would have had that hand launch.

[00:15:34] Control code into it or in it, because the regular AS3X+ receivers that you could program and put in your other airplanes, that was never an option. So with AS3X+ plus and synapse and all that kind of stuff, that’s when you got all the extra options. Okay, because synapse I’m pretty sure is just AS3X+.

[00:15:52] Plus on a bigger receiver too. Yeah, because, like so the v900, for example, it has safe and if you launch it on safe it does almost what hand launch mode does, but not as good. It doesn’t have the up elevator, right. Right, it doesn’t exactly. It doesn’t have that option to where you can adjust the- I don’t know- take off my goal or climb out angle. Yeah, so you can change with the AS3X+.

[00:16:20] Plus that I have on those. Now you can change the climb angle, you can change the what’s it called. So in order to get into the hand launch mode automatically, it has to see a certain g-force right and it has to be at a certain throttle. Okay, so you can change whatever throttle position you want, if it’s. I think mine are set at 70 on both of them and I think I change it to one and a half g’s. So if it sees one and a half g’s, it knows it’s being thrown at full throttle and with that, yeah, it’s.

[00:16:53] Not something you have to turn on or anything, right, it’s automatic. And so with that you don’t actually have a lot of control with the ailerons. And I said you can set time too. So I set it for three seconds. So what that does is it kind of goes into a safe mode. That’s kind of enhanced. When you throw it, you can literally just leave your throttle alone, full throttle, whatever. Throw it, you don’t have to touch the transmitter at all. For whatever amount of time you have it set, like I said, mine’s three seconds, with that being three seconds, then you have full control. You don’t have full control.

[00:17:28] Until those three seconds are over. Right, how I learned that? How I learned that is when I tried it with the habu the first time, before I asked for help setting it up. The rates were very high on the habu, so that’s one that you have to throw with hand launch like there’s no gear that I have on or anything like that, and, having flown it before, I was not worried about it through it. And this is when it was set, I think, at two seconds. I didn’t have a full three seconds on it and as I threw it,

[00:18:00] It went straight ahead and actually kind of pitched down a little bit because I didn’t have it set up right. So I gave it up elevator and it was fine. And then I started to turn a little bit with ailerons and it just slowly started to turn. So I’m like: okay, so it’s slow. So I gave it more aileron and then the, the hand launch kicked off, kicked off and since I had the rates up so high, it just sat there and, like it was a very fast roll rate, scared me, almost lost it, but I didn’t. And then that’s when I

[00:18:33] Figured what maybe. Maybe I should ask just to see what I’m doing wrong once it was explained. Like I said, it’s very easy to do, very simple to set up and I will happily have that on any hand launch airplane that I have from now on. Yeah, it just gives you that extra time to get your hand from the airplane to the transmitter without worrying about it exactly. Yep, very handy and that’s.

[00:18:57] The time where most of those hand launch crashes occur? Yeah, is that transition from airplane to transmitter? Yeah, or somebody gives you a bad launch or there’s that. Who, why, why were you looking at me both of?

[00:19:10] You, it wasn’t you. My mig 21 got thrown straight up. Well, that was daniel. Sorry, daniel don’t mean to die. Wow, that was a long time. He has gotten so much better. He has. He really has. Yeah, but yeah, no, my mig 21 got thrown basically straight up in the air and yeah, I don’t like that. Yeah, I wonder how much that would have helped. It would have immediately knocked the nose down. It probably would have helped a lot.

[00:19:36] Yeah as long as it’s not stalled then it would be okay yeah but it would probably never have gotten to.

[00:19:43] That point. It would have seen the. It would have seen that coming up immediately while it still had speed from the launch. It would yeah, yeah cool. I like it, me too. Yeah, very cool. So that was my flights.

[00:19:57] Had that. Like I said, I got a few in on the jet. Didn’t quite make it to draining my five gallon, can that I wanted to do, I remember. But oh good, I’m so glad. But that’s okay, I will maybe get another flight or two in this year. If not, that’ll be next year, we’ll see. Yeah, this weather is getting.

[00:20:16] Weird it is. I hope to do some more, like I’ve been flying a lot at the school just down from the house. Yeah, not the last few days, because it’s been so dang windy but windy, windy. But yeah, hopefully there’ll be a few more days. I’m hoping, yeah, we’ll get some more. It won’t be as warm but it will get.

[00:20:33] More. Yeah, I think I think I’m probably unfortunately done with eli this year because I don’t like the cold and all that stuff he’s done for the year. No, I can’t be. I have not made my goal yet. But hey, speaking that, what was your goal? A lot, 400, and where are you at? I don’t remember the exact number, close, but let’s say 380, something. Oh man, you’re so close, I know I’ll probably. I mean I will get there, yeah.

[00:21:02] So I updated my spreadsheet. I’m sorry. I did ask you that so that I could talk about myself. I’m sorry, I’m not a narcissist. A good lead-in, that’s nice, I like that. But I finally did get around to updating my spreadsheet, both for a number of flights and to airplanes, and I’m surprised like I’ve flown more than I thought I had this year. Good, that’s the goal, yes, but I tallied them up and I’m at

[00:21:27] 176 Or five or something like that, which is way more than I was, than I had in my head. Yeah so, and my total number of airplanes is 38 for anyway and 28 flyable, and then 38 total. That’s down a bit, it’s down.

[00:21:42] Quite a bit good yeah well that should be my goal for next year which was my goal for this year which.

[00:21:47] Was my goal for last year well new year’s coming you can make new goals there we go and not fail to.

[00:21:52] Achieve them actually I’m I think I’m good I think I’m still negative net negative this year there you.

[00:21:57] Go so dave I think I’m positive I don’t know I haven’t looked at the count lately what about number.

[00:22:03] Of flights. I don’t remember you selling setting a goal. He did. Did you 100? Oh, okay, so where are you at? He’s at like seven. He’s doing great. He’s more than that. Actually. That’s about what I need left.

[00:22:15] No, I think, nice. I ran the totals the other night and I think I’m at 86. Excellent, odd. Yeah. So I just 14 more. That’s all you need. I just haven’t been able to get flying this year. Yeah, well, we’ll get there, I think. Yeah, I’m thinking I might be able to get 14 in before the end of the year, but it’s going to be close. Yeah, oh easy. I mean honestly, yeah, seems like every time I go flying it’s like five flights. I got six in last saturdays, yeah, exactly. So just take more.

[00:22:47] And more time so you fly more yeah so I did that I’m a little limited right now on what I can.

[00:22:52] Take to the field yeah the convertible mustang can’t haul a whole lot no but here’s the thing.

[00:22:59] It hauls small airplanes really well and small airplanes are easy to fly almost anywhere.

[00:23:04] Right, I’m just saying. I’m just saying I have my Remote ID so I can be legal. See, if they’re small, you don’t need it. Well, yeah, they’re over, yes, 800 millimeter. Fms t28- yeah, that’s over the whatever.

[00:23:20] 250 Grams or something. Yeah, it’s a small airplane, but not that small yep. So yeah, I was surprised I did not set a goal for this year, but yes, you did, I did. Yeah, what was it? I don’t remember but we have it from. Oh well, you should look that up because I don’t remember so I can look. But yeah, 170, just call it 175. If we get some more decent days, I’ll fly more down at the, down at the school with my small ones, or come out here. I almost did. You tried to that day that I was. Yeah, you were busy.

[00:23:54] Oh that’s what we went to the pumpkin patch yeah he said no I’m doing other stuff I don’t want you.

[00:23:58] To come out here and fly. It’s basically. I don’t think that’s how the text read. I think it was more. I wish I could come and do that. That’s how I read it. I wish I could get more quality time at the.

[00:24:06] Field but that’s just not happening that yeah that’s probably going to be coming to an end.

[00:24:12] Yeah just because of the weather because of the weather yeah hold on here we go.

[00:24:19] Yeah I was a I mean I was both shocked and surprised at my total number yeah because you thought you.

[00:24:24] Were way high yeah then you got thinking oh no yeah I’m way off way low if I had like.

[00:24:30] Honest to goodness, I had estimated that I was maybe at 100 for the year, maybe, so you were way off. So I was way off. Yeah, your goal was 200, by the way. Oh man, doable, I have it written down from.

[00:24:42] Last year’s so you’re about the same number off as I am yeah as I am man and I have to work this.

[00:24:51] Weekend do you oh yeah you do oh yeah you do sorry geez my bad let’s see I’m at 384 right now yeah.

[00:25:03] So I am what is entirely possible for all of us for all three of us okay I’m gonna have to try harder.

[00:25:11] So he’s gonna have to bundle up and just man he’s just gonna have to man up and do it.

[00:25:16] Yeah, you’ve got the cool glove thing. I know I know the older I get, though it was cold well, and I’m gonna be honest too, like I sun really, yeah, I thought it was nice out. Oh no, I’m sorry saturday. Saturday was a little chilly, okay, saturday. Yeah, my bad, that’s right, yeah.

[00:25:34] Saturday was a little chilly out at our field anyway what was I doing saturday you guys go both.

[00:25:38] Days: no, both. No, saturday- wait what? I had dog stuff sunday so I couldn’t go sunday. Yeah, right, anyway. Yeah, you were calendar together. No, sunday. I know we went to the pumpkin patch, but I’m trying.

[00:25:53] To think what saturday was, because sunday is when you, tommy, texted me about coming out to my house if I was not busy, which I was. That’s sad. That’s sad. That was like five days ago, I do not know what.

[00:26:06] I did on saturday but anyway so I can throw all my yomex stuff in the mustang that’ll work.

[00:26:13] Yeah 16 flights easy yeah oh yeah we got to make this happen.

[00:26:20] Yeah, I’ve thought about flying the 50 millimeter habu. Here too. I think I could. You could totally handle, especially now with the with the hand launch piece of cake. One shot at landings though.

[00:26:30] I was gonna say you’re, you’ve got one, yeah, but I mean I’m getting pretty good fairly tall grass out there, if you have. You looked out there? No, it is like short, short, oh, have you, you did cut it, that’s.

[00:26:42] Right I cut it a lot I think last time I cut it like an inch and a half full field so it’s yeah but.

[00:26:48] It’s got five inches of cuttings on top of the not anymore we burnt them off but way off topic.

[00:26:55] I’m talking about airplanes and flying I don’t know what I was yeah I was gonna say something else.

[00:27:00] But it doesn’t matter. Well, you were talking about AS3X+ plus and how that has enabled you to enable the, the hand launch mode, and how that’s different than the, the safe and all that. Nothing’s ringing a bell. We’ll move on, going into another segment. Oh, you’re wanting to talk about yourself again, sorry, yeah, so I updated the receiver in my turbo timber evolution. I’m really

[00:27:23] Getting to like that airplane now that’s the red one right yeah the red and white one okay.

[00:27:27] The one I didn’t like when I first got it very much didn’t like- yeah, I, I’m really getting to like it, like, and so what’s the difference then? Why do you like it now? Well, I updated the receiver right and so it’s got as it’s open. Yes, I unlocked it. It’s got AS3X+ plus and I can fiddle with the gains. I can put the gains on a channel and adjust them in flight. I can adjust them and set them per flight mode. I love it. But what I love most about it- and dave will, I think, back me up on this- yes, because I didn’t get to see it and I bought the super timber wheels and put them on it.

[00:28:02] So the rubber squishy ones? What a difference really, oh man, the thing just sticks. Now, so are those heavy? They are slightly heavier than the stock phone ones, but not a noticeable, noticeable at all in flight, not enough to make a difference. No, but it makes landing so much, so much better. On grass, asphalt, it does it, it will bounce. I’m not gonna say it doesn’t bounce, but when it bounces it’s less severe.

[00:28:34] And it bounces less so, since I’ve still not seen those tires. How inflated do you have them? Like when it’s sitting on the ground? Do you see squish? Yes, yeah, okay, yeah, and it looks like a bush plane.

[00:28:49] Tire. So yeah, they’re adjustable, right, yeah, so you can, yeah, you can. So on mine, e-flight tells you they, they don’t give you psi, they give you diameter. Right, they say I think their recommended diameter is:

[00:29:04] Five and a half. Five is the middle minimum. Five and a half is they’re recommended for most aircraft, and is it five and three quarters or six, I don’t, I don’t know. There is a maximum size. I want you to blow it up too as well. But yeah, five and a half is a record and the rubber is very, very thin and pliable.

[00:29:23] And like one little pump of the pump that they give you with the wheels, makes a big difference. So it’s it’s quite an art to get them exactly the diameter and to get them to match that you and to get them to match. I’ve discovered that I cannot take mine down to five because they deflate. Mine came.

[00:29:41] At five and my airplane is a little squishy, so I put mine on the fms 1700 millimeter super cup, which came with absolutely pathetic wheels. Yeah, those are awful too, are those the hard plastic?

[00:29:54] Those are ones I just gave you. Okay, that’s what those are. Those are nice size, but they are they’re. They’re cartoonish. First off, I’m trying to think what it reminds me of, like the power wheels, wheels.

[00:30:03] Or something like that. How hard they are- hard as a rock. Yeah, ground handling on grass and asphalt- both was asphalt- was impossible, could not get it to go in a straight line long enough to take off. I mean, they may as well be hard plastic. Yeah, the in grass they were acceptable, but acceptable minus, yeah, yeah, awful, awful. I don’t know why they did and they put inflatables on the 1300 millimeter. I don’t know why they really didn’t offer 1300 or 1700 with inflatables. Yeah, but yeah.

[00:30:40] Yeah, well, anyway, what huge difference that airplane is. Well what they go ahead. I’m sorry, the ground handling is night and day. That’s what I was gonna say. Yeah it, yeah, it doesn’t. It seems like they do a fair amount of shock absorbing also, even though I think so, even though they’re the gear is spring loaded on the on the turbo timber evolution. They, like the wingtip strikes on landing are much less now too, like I can be a lot sloppier with the landings now and it’ll not hurt. It makes you look yeah much.

[00:31:12] Better. Yeah, it’s just so, between those wheels and unlocking the receiver and opening up the menus where I could modify them. I don’t know if a lot of people know this and I didn’t know this. I think I might have known this and then forgot and then remembered again. But AS3X+, like so from the factory, those 637 ta receivers, they come programmed for whatever bind to fly airplane. You get them in and that stock programming limits the amount of travel, no matter what you do on the.

[00:31:46] Transmitter. They will only move the servos so far. Like you can go max travel on your, on your- I call it epa- but on your servo adjustments in this, in the servo monitor screen. You can go max travel there, max travel on, do max everywhere, and you won’t get max travel out of the servos because there’s something limiting in the programming of the receiver. Once you unlock it, wipe it clean, get rid of that factory programming and then have an open receiver. It opens all that up and now I’ve got full travel out of the servos.

[00:32:20] And it looks like 3d travel. Like the elevator goes up almost 90 degrees. It’s awesome, so that for that reason also, I’m gonna. It’s going to be a good 3d practice plane. Nice for me. Yeah, okay, it hovers- like I can hover it now with the with the open receiver, unlocked receiver. Yeah, so like I’m having a lot of fun with it, and the fact that it’s fairly small ish, but still not like really small, like small enough, not too small. Yeah, I can fly it good.

[00:32:50] Size, it’s a school or come out here. I could probably fly it out here. Oh yeah, I’d be comfortable flying out. And the flaps: I modified the flaps too and they come like almost 90 degrees down. Oh, and I have crow now too. I took, and this like I’ve done a lot of stuff. I’ve spent a lot of time on this, probably more than I should have, but I cut one. So the ailerons are wide right, but there’s two wing halves with two connectors that have the cool connection on the, on the fuselage, the plugs.

[00:33:23] Right, the cool little plugs. Oh, yeah, well, because they’re wide connector, one wire from each plug gets soldered together somewhere and then it gets into the one aileron channel. I cut one of the wires right and put a connector on it so that I could plug that aileron servo into a separate channel. So now I have crow, I have flat, full span flaps, I have it’s. Yeah, it’s been a lot of fun, that’s awesome. A fully configurable wing: yeah, yeah, well, I really want to find slats on that. No, no, I don’t know.

[00:33:55] Are those removable after you put them on, are they? They are, but they’re not magnetic, so they’re. They’re stick on. Yeah, they’re. They’re having adhesive. So, yeah, you could pop them off, but I just I prefer to leave them off. It’s fine. The plane already rolls slow, even with the max throw that I have. It’s just aerodynamically limited, I think, on roll rate, and putting the slats on would just slow it down further. So I’m just going to leave them off, but so you can talk about whatever you’re going to.

[00:34:25] Continue on with oh that was it I was just having a good time with that one well I was going to ask.

[00:34:29] How did you find the update process for going to AS3X+ plus so we went through it last time we got.

[00:34:35] Together to record. And you showed me how you did it and we ran into that one snag. I forget what the fix was selecting: selecting the right one when you shut it off, yeah, when you disconnect the power to the cable. So I did it again, I just started over and it five minutes. Yeah, it was super, super quick. Yeah and yeah, and that’s, that’s from an old curmudgeon that doesn’t know computer exactly. The forward programming is so handy. The avian speed controller.

[00:35:12] Programming with the forward programming or however you want to call it. That is super easy. I mean, it’s just, it’s a very easy to use system. Yeah, for me, and that’s important because I don’t have a lot of patience for computers- yeah, it happens, it’s okay. But yeah, I mean I’ve been having a blast and I’m that I can. Yeah to AS3X+ plus and probably going to unlock all of them and set up my own stuff. Beautiful thing about those receivers is that you can store, not just one you can store.

[00:35:48] Multiple profiles on that receiver so you can back up whatever’s on it before you start tinkering with it. Yeah, and if you get it tinkering tinkered out of limits or out of your too much, you can load the factory program right back on it from the receiver. It’s awesome, nice. Yeah, I love it. Yeah, super, super, super easy to use, even for a guy like me. So there you go. I just need to bring my slow stick receiver.

[00:36:13] Over and have you guys ford program it peace cake so it’ll work with both ailerons yeah and I know.

[00:36:19] The fix for that. I’m sure Ron does too- the so like, if you don’t unlock the receiver and you try to do the flap around, you’ll only get stabilization on one aileron. Yeah, and it works. Yeah, it works. It’s just weird, understood, but if you unlock it and start from, yeah, you can, you can have.

[00:36:40] Your AS3X+ on all your channels from the. That’s the e-flight slow ultra stick. I gotcha I. I wasn’t sure what airplane we were talking about at first, but it’s super easy to do. Yeah, I’ve flown.

[00:36:51] Yours and I’ve flown daniel’s in the wind and yeah, it’s much more stable in the wind than mine is. Yeah, just using the one aileron as a having stabilization now in pitch, it’s fine there’s.

[00:37:01] No difference there. But well, that’s such a slow flying airplane that you kind of need both of them really to stabilize it, if you, because there’s not a lot of air movement over it. Yeah, it’s not fast. Now, calm air is perfectly fine. It’s. Yeah, hardly anything’s moving. So dave hasn’t talked about.

[00:37:19] What heat fluid eli that day oh well dave and daniel were there too yeah and then we’re flying.

[00:37:25] Let’s see, here we had the. What did I bring? I don’t know. Let’s see, it’s been so long. You had the skywarden, I had the skywarden. It’s been about a year since I’ve flown it. It’s it’s going to swap me, which, by the way, in case anyone’s not familiar with,

[00:37:44] What the skywarden project is. It started as a hangar 9 pawnee, the 40 size, the 40 size one, and then dave modified it to look like a light attack aircraft. I would, yeah, it’s, I think it.

[00:37:55] Looks cool. It’s very cool. It’s got the bomb drop. It needs more power. It definitely needs more power, which is really strange. It’s got the seto 80 on it, which is the hangar 9 recommended four stroke for that aircraft and, granted, it’s a little heavier now because I’ve got underwing ordinance on it and it’s a pilot and so forth, it did not gain that much weight. Yeah, I’m not sure that 82 is giving you its best. Yeah, it has to be tuned to the max to have it fly reasonable. Yeah, and it’s got a.

[00:38:27] Little cranky and wanted to die. I had old fuel to start with, so it sounds good, though now- and it was lean on the low end, it was popping and cracking and backfiring, and so we wanted to fix that. Before it threw a propeller at anybody, yeah, which they are known to do- it ran good, it just needs more. It needs more power, which what does that say about us, right?

[00:38:54] It flies fine, like it does fly fine with that power plant. We’re just so accustomed to having so much power on tap that it just it feels underpowered, even though it has enough power to fly at scale. Yeah.

[00:39:08] Look at the Telemaster. Yeah, exactly same. Through the bombs at Ron. Yeah, I mean, I didn’t know what was going on with that, by the way, but all of a sudden, as I’m, I was on the field pelted by foam. Oh, I was blowing the field, is that when I was? You’re blowing the field with your habu or whatever? Oh, yeah, because there was there was grass clippings and I was wanting to get it cleared off before I ran the jet up. Yeah, so grass clippings on the runway. So I was using my habu as a leaf blower. All of a sudden, leaf blower? Actually probably not, but- and then I get attacked by these two things that are just like.

[00:39:43] Smacking on the ground next to me like what the what the heck is this what is going on.

[00:39:48] Dave was dropping his ordinance on you yeah very rude.

[00:39:53] Yeah, that was fun. It was fun for some. Yeah, well, and then it dead sticked on me so we had to land it a dead stick of one of two dead sticks on saturday for me. Yeah, the cub was the other. Oh, I forgot about that. Yeah, yeah, daniel had his cub out there, his hanger, not in the hanger nine. It was a great.

[00:40:10] Plain 60 size cub with now this is post repair because last time he had it out was the doink and.

[00:40:16] The run yeah he that’s 60 size yeah it’s 60 size it seems small for 60 sizes well I mean he.

[00:40:23] Had it sitting next to my quarter scale maybe that’s why it seems small what was do wingspan on it.

[00:40:30] I don’t know 80 81 or better around because it’s imaa legal oh yeah okay I always thought like 80-ish was.

[00:40:38] 40 Size 40 size on the cubs no that’s that’s pretty big for a 40 size yeah I think 68 to 74 I think is.

[00:40:47] The 40 size-ish range, I think. Anyway, okay, sorry. So anyway, it has evolution 15 gasser on it and this was the first flight after he had put the nose back on it, because he knocked the firewall out of it. So I had it again as a first flight and flying around a little bit and it just shut off.

[00:41:09] Yeah, like, not like running out of fuel, but just it didn’t gag, it didn’t do anything, just off click like somebody flipped the switch. Yeah, they literally did. Well, something happened. Something happened. So it was in a awkward position for me to land. So I had to think about it a second. It’s like, okay, I need to side slip it a little bit, but then I also need to move it out, and I’ve only flown this airplane one time previously, but it’s a cub, yeah, it’s a cub. Yeah, anyway, side slipped it a little bit.

[00:41:41] Did some mess turns, got it arranged, made it back to the field and actually came in a little hotter and I expected it to. I thought it would be a little drag year, but it made it back, no problems, we dealt with it. Couldn’t get to restart. Couldn’t get it to restart, no crack, no pop. And this engine usually starts pretty quickly and we had an electric starter for an evolution. Yeah, those gashers are always pretty good, though I thought one thing: this one’s a low compression and it just it doesn’t like a

[00:42:07] Hand flip it likes a starter yeah that’s how the one I had was on that mustang yeah I couldn’t.

[00:42:12] Hand start it. You bump it with the starter, it kicks right over. But you try to hand flip it and it’s kind of no, I don’t think so couldn’t get it to go, couldn’t get it to go, couldn’t get it to go. And then he noticed that the red light on the dashboard, which is his opto kill switch, was off, even though we had it on. And I start toggling down off switch and no light, no light. So we’re good that there’s the indicator. Yeah, so we’re thinking that there’s a problem with the ignition battery. It went dead because

[00:42:46] Who knows, it’s hard for him to get to. So I thought maybe he didn’t get a good connection when he charged it and it shut off. I don’t know. So to bypass that, just to see if it was in fact a bad battery, we just bypassed the switch and plugged it directly into the ignition and the engine fired right up, ran great, yeah. So we start digging around with it and come to find out that it’s got a bad connector on the opto kill switch. Oh okay, so it’s not the switch, then switch seems that’s good. Fine, as far as I can tell. Yeah, we weren’t able to diagnose it completely, but that seems to.

[00:43:21] Be the issue, because he would take and hold the connectors just right and it would work just fine, cool. So in order to fly the rest of the weekend, we were just going to leave the battery plugged into the ignition. I got the that’s going to run that battery down. I don’t know how much it pulls just sitting, just sitting there, yeah. So got digging around, found a couple extension cables and ran them.

[00:43:40] Outside the wing and so we could plug the nice it worked because they flew it a couple times after.

[00:43:45] That it was a little farmer rigged but it’s okay it worked it’s all right and that’s.

[00:43:50] A good really good flying airplane I mean it’s a cub yeah they all fly pretty good and they.

[00:43:56] All fly very similarly, I would say, unless it’s a clip doing when those fly a little bit different. But yeah, and then I had the fms super cub out there and flew it around quite a bit getting used to the new wheels. I’m a little slightly over inflated on my wheels. I want to take a net, let them down just a little bit. Yeah, I think I put them in just about five and a third inches. Five and three, eight somewhere in.

[00:44:19] That range. Yeah, if I go, if I go below five and a quarter on mine, they won’t hold air. Yeah, well, let me rephrase that if I go below five and a quarter, one of them won’t continue to hold air. So those actually.

[00:44:34] Are like set on the rims. They’re beadlocks. They’re beadlocks, really. Yeah, I just for some reason assumed it would be like a, an inner tube. Nope, huh, okay. Well, I don’t think it’s an inner tube.

[00:44:46] No, I think they’re actually beadlocked onto the wheels. Yeah, yeah, anything, anything, I forget which one, right or left- under five and a quarter inches it won’t. It doesn’t seal, then I guess. Yeah, I think it’s not putting enough pressure against it, right, probably. But I like it so much when they’re soft and squid, like when you put the airplane down and you can see the bulge. Yeah, that looks so cool and it does such a good job of impact or absorbing impact. Mine barely bulges. That’s really. I want to let them out.

[00:45:13] Just a little bit more to help with some of the bounce. Yeah, and I put down a couple hard landings on purpose, just to see what, how badly they would bounce. And it wasn’t I did. I did too, not on purpose.

[00:45:26] But yeah, they do a very good job of. You could say it’s on purpose, it’s okay, my mistakes. Like I said, I can be very sloppy now with the landing of this thing and it will make me look like a hero. I need to.

[00:45:38] Throw a bicycle tube repair kit in with my oh that’s a good idea just in case that’s a really.

[00:45:42] Good I’m going to find a thorn or something yeah especially on our field at here yeah that’s.

[00:45:48] A good point, biggie, so you don’t want to ruin your day because of a flat tire, right yep. And then I had something else out there. Oh, I got the eltrick 600 back out after the motor repair and of course it flies.

[00:45:59] Fine flies perfect nice it still does the cool pancake spin yeah scared to death I’m gonna throw.

[00:46:07] The other motor out. I need to change that other motor mount out. Yeah, yeah, the one that broke was the 3d printed one, wasn’t it? I changed both into 3d prints, so just one of the 3ds broke, yeah, so I replaced it with the stock one, and the other one I didn’t bother to change out yet, but I need to because the other one had a tremendous amount of stress cracks in it. Oh okay, so there you go. Maybe they just have a life and time to repair. That could be well, and I don’t know what the guy used to print.

[00:46:35] Them that, true, did it too. I don’t remember what material was, or if he was curing right or over curing or under cure, because I wasn’t the one that did those. Yeah, so I’ll take that responsibility off my shoulders and place it somewhere else. So that was the. So that was the saturday that.

[00:46:52] We were all at eli and you went back on sunday yeah the other thing that happened saturday though.

[00:46:57] I forgot. So I took my fw 190 out. That’s right. First time I had actually flown that flies really nice. It does, it really does. So it has a retractable gear. I really like the way it flies. It’s a little well. Here we go again. A little underpowered, which really isn’t underpowered, but I mean it flies very scale-like. Yeah, you’re not gonna have unlimited vertical or anything like that, but I’m running the 3s 1300. I think it calls for like a 3s 1800, which is just a weird size and I’m not gonna

[00:47:28] It was fine it balanced fine all that stuff with it but anyway so I had I don’t know two or three.

[00:47:34] Maybe four flights on it yeah you had several at least because I know I watched it a couple times.

[00:47:38] And I mean it’s like I said, it’s a fun, good flying airplane once I figured out, by the way, it’s so quiet it is, but it. So the first time when I made it I took off and stuff and it was really slow, really pitchy and it I. So it has the, the split flaps, which I forgot that it had flaps, because I’ve never really messed with it too much. So I was flying with full flaps, not realizing because when you’re looking at the airplane you don’t see them from the top. So after I figured that out and figured what switch that was on and actually got them up, it flew a lot better, a little bit faster.

[00:48:12] Too, but anyway. So I took off, landed several times good airplane. I was practicing the slow takeoff, which is hard to do, the slow takeoff and stuff. And so I say, tommy, I want you to fly this, see how you take off and see how good you are, as opposed. No, no, that’s not what you said. Hey, Tom, you want to fly? That was in my mind. Oh, that was like I want to see, because I know how hard this is to ground handle and take off. I want to see how you do it. So hand you the controller.

[00:48:45] Charge battery, all that stuff and go out. Well, first off, I was very disappointed in your takeoff because you just went full throttle and you were off the ground and 10, 15 feet- yeah, I wanted to fly it. Well, that’s boring. Like I wanted the scale takeoff to see how you should have said that. And well, I didn’t think you would just power out of it. And the other thing that I know is too like I don’t know. Other thing I noticed too, when you land, like it holds the tail up forever, like you almost have to be stopped before that tail actually drops down, which is cool I wanted you to experience.

[00:49:20] That too, because I thought it was cool. Well, I didn’t get to experience that, you did not. So as soon as you took off, maybe 20 feet in the air, you think, oh, I don’t even think it was that, you don’t.

[00:49:31] Think you were that high I think it was like 10 to 12 feet high all we noticed something falling off.

[00:49:36] The airplane -huh and go rolling down the runway. The wheel came off and I was so disappointed because I wanted you to experience a landing with it, but unfortunately we didn’t have the right size nut to put it back on. Yeah, with us, and so, yeah, you didn’t get to land with the gear. No, you said you.

[00:49:59] Took it back from me and put the gear up well the gear was already up and as per my recommendation.

[00:50:06] You landed in the grass and there was zero damage. Yeah, so we did a, we did a flyby with the gear down to kind of look at the gear and get a better idea of what would happen, because my original plan was just land gear down until I saw that there was nothing structural hanging down, it was all just the, the gear cover and stuff. Yeah, and so that’s when you suggested putting the gear up and just landing, which I was hoping to, not mess anything up with the propeller and all that stuff. But man, not a problem at all. No, not a problem, not a scratch that I saw or anything. So, plus, it’s not the prettiest.

[00:50:39] Of airplanes. To begin with it has a little bit. It looks pretty good from oh yeah when it’s flying, but like if you’re looking in your hand, oh well, it’s got a little bit to it. It was when I got used a couple.

[00:50:49] Years ago a year ago whatever it was I’m glad you finally flew it I am too I didn’t have the battery.

[00:50:54] For it for the longest time. I didn’t want to buy an 1800 just for that one. For that, yeah, and so 2200 fit in it. No, too much. Huh, it’s too tall because the way, so, the way that one goes, the battery goes.

[00:51:07] Perpendicular to the motor shaft. So instead of it running horizontal in the airplane, it goes vertical, straight up and down under the hatch, and there’s no room anywhere else to put it. So I had- I don’t remember what I bought. I bought the 1300 for something. There’s actually an air. Oh yeah, never mind, it was for the gwsa 10 that I don’t know why I bought a battery for that already, but anyway, so that’s what I had that for. And then I was looking through batteries and stuff and so I was like I wonder if that would work in that airplane. So I finally got everything together.

[00:51:41] And it works well great yeah so that’s a good airplane that’s one I will be keeping because it’s fun.

[00:51:47] I like it. I did have another airplane I completely forgot about. I had the freewing f86. Oh, that’s right, I’ve flown that for a couple years. Yeah, excellent, it does much better on the on the asphalt.

[00:52:00] Yeah it does a lot the grass takeoffs are come on come on you can do it you can do it please do it.

[00:52:07] Yeah, where’s that little bounce? Need a bounce? Yeah, kind of like trying to fly your old t-34 off the grass. Yeah, yeah, where’s the bounce? Come on, I know you can do it somewhere. You can do it. Come on, buddy. So, yeah, yeah, yeah. So that was the. That was saturday, and then you went back sunday. Yeah, I think it was just more flying, the normal stuff. Did you end up taking the jet sunday? I did. I flew out a few more.

[00:52:32] Times, cool, good deal. Yeah, I just left everything except the fw 190. I took that out since that didn’t have the gear for sunday, but I flew everything that I had taken. Oh, and I guess I didn’t put the viper together either because I spent, like said, most of my time back and forth on the habu and the f-22. Fun, fun, flying airplanes. Yeah, flying airplanes is fun. Yeah, yep, and then since then I have kind of ish started on figuring out how to put floats on the viper 90. You can see my mock-up.

[00:53:10] Right there. Nobody else can, but you guys can. It looks awesome, it looks. It looks really cool. It really does okay. So tell us which floats are these, dave? Tell us which floats are these? These are the ones dave gave me that were off of something he had. They were the floats for the grand tundra, oh yes, and which went poof. Yeah, and I’m I’m gonna be honest, like if I had my option, like if I went to a hobby store and there was 10 different floats sets sitting there, this would be the one I chose. I mean this, it’s.

[00:53:42] Really is perfect size. They look the part. Yeah say, if it looks right, it’s got to be right. And the airplanes sitting on them, it actually looks like. I mean, it looks like it was made for those. It’s not.

[00:53:53] Going to be hard. No, to put mounts in there. No, like I think I’m going to probably design something on the computer and probably cut it on the laser to give me. I want it to be strong enough, yeah, especially for the back one so that it doesn’t tear out, or anything like that. And then on the, the floats the back ones are designed with the wire to actually go up into the fuselage. So I’ll have to cut a slot, like I said, line it probably on both sides with balsa or not balsa, but with like light ply or something like that. But I want to make sure.

[00:54:24] Whatever goes up inside the fuselage doesn’t block the airflow, yeah, so we’ll get that figured out. That’s probably going to be a little while, but I want to try this. Yeah, on snow. Yeah, yeah, got to figure out a rudder, I guess. Yeah, a water or snow rudder. Yeah, the snow rudder part is going to kind of suck.

[00:54:42] Yeah that’s not going to work in the snow no that’s what I mean like I don’t know.

[00:54:47] I don’t know we’ll figure it out that’s gonna be easy oh yeah because it will just sit there and.

[00:54:52] Continue to move with the floats mounted the way that you’re thinking about you’ll still.

[00:54:57] Be able to raise and lower the gear. I know, isn’t that the best part? It’s completely out of the way. Yeah, so that plane will still work just fine. Yeah, with those things, awesome. Yeah, I know I like it. And that’s when I crash. So if I crash again, I don’t care. And actually, to make it lighter, you could pull.

[00:55:13] The gear out of it to compensate for the weight of the floats I don’t know if I’ll need to yeah.

[00:55:17] Like, I mean, I thought about that, but the- the gear is actually what holds the doors closed, the gear doors closed so it’s smooth on the bottom now, as opposed to having the turbulent surface underneath and the nose gear especially. I guess I could figure out a way to keep that closed. But the, the spring is actually closed with the gear. I gotcha, but no, I think it’s going to look good, I think it’s. I actually think it’s like sized right where I’m not going to worry too much about any of

[00:55:48] The splatters getting up in the airplane or anything like that. It should be okay off of water. So maybe, if all goes well, I will have a viper float plane for joe and all next year. I just can’t believe how.

[00:56:01] Perfect they were for just dragging something out of my garage I know I mean like that is just that you.

[00:56:05] Cannot. It’s that fast for a better size airplane? Yeah, it’s awesome, or floats, I mean. But yeah, so that’s about all I’ve been working on. Yeah, I’ve done a couple of things: fixed the umx, consendo, consendo, whatever, and flew that a couple times, got that back from my crash and joan all this year.

[00:56:25] We both fixed crashes. Huh, so we both fixed crashes, hosers, the motor on the- oh, that’s right. Yeah, I forgot about that, that was john, all three. So what did I have to fix? A little beast with an fcg and asymmetric thrust. Tommy is thinking, thinking, thinking. Yeah, I’m trying to.

[00:56:45] Think of what I had to say. Oh yeah, the Telemaster that’s fixed. Oh, from, yeah, not crashing, but from the transport, yeah. Yeah, I didn’t crash anything this year. We didn’t fly it at joan all this year, no, but I didn’t crash anything at joan all this year either, intentionally, I mean yeah.

[00:57:07] I thought you did combat not this year no oh just yeah I did combat that’s right.

[00:57:13] I see that I mean: well, I guess technically the turbo timber did go into the lake, but that wasn’t really my fault. No, I didn’t crash that, it crashed itself, right? Yes, that’s what I’m going with.

[00:57:29] I get it, but anyway, joan, all next. So that was yeah, yeah, so that was, that was weekend before last. And then, yeah, this past weekend, you that you didn’t, I was, I did not partake go. Yeah, dave, daniel and I and who else was, I guess I was just: yeah, art was out there. Art had an interesting experience, yeah, so I don’t know, maybe some of our listeners have experienced this, but I believe this is the first time I’ve ever actually witnessed it, but a hawk physically attacking like, with intent.

[00:58:05] An airplane a model airplane it gave it his all oh man yeah so art was flying his.

[00:58:12] Dura fly or whatever. That is the efx. It’s like the v900 copy right from hobby king. He was flying that, which is a fast airplane, right, yeah? He goes from left to right in front of us across the field and then, when he gets down to the right side of the field, which is the east end of the field, making his turn out from nowhere- I have no idea where he came from- comes this hawk like big, large bird.

[00:58:39] Going after art’s airplane. It was. It was quite interesting. Rage in his eyes. Oh yeah, this hawk was very angry, that’s awesome. But yeah, coming like, I’ve never seen a bird physically try to attack a model. I’ve heard of it happening. But yeah, now I can say I’ve seen it. It was pretty wild. He missed obviously. Yeah, I mean it’s hard to keep up with that airplane. But yeah, oh, that’s cool, that’s funny. But yeah, that was, that was interesting. Flew the v900. I think I finally have the prop dialed in for that for four cells. It’s an eight by eight apc. Dave had his tester out there, his.

[00:59:18] Watt meter. I forget what the water. It was like four something, wasn’t it, or did it go over that? It went to 54 amps. 54 Amps, yeah, but like as far as watts, right, oh, we measured, we measured. I can’t remember what it was. It was up there for what it is, yeah, but it has a 60 amp speed controller in it and we an eight by eight wide open 54 amps. So I have a little bit of headroom. Now you have more than

[00:59:45] That because it won’t unload that much in the air it will unload some yeah but it won’t be I mean.

[00:59:51] You won’t pull as much in the air as you do exactly around. Yeah, static test makes worse possible. Yeah, and we proved that because I did fly it that way and the battery came back no warmer than it would.

[01:00:00] Have come back had I been flying it barely warmed up yeah so that you did you wasn’t full throttle.

[01:00:05] The whole time you do that’s true it breaks I did yeah but I’m pretty sure I had much to do with.

[01:00:09] That now maybe the temperature on the esc oh and it wasn’t I touched the motor right after the.

[01:00:14] Flight it wasn’t it wasn’t it wasn’t warm no it was fine nice yeah now in august it might be a.

[01:00:19] Different story, but I might have to be careful in august, but way faster than it was. With whatever, the problem that I had on it was huge, change, huge. So it’s fun again. So more fun, huh, yeah, nice. And now that I it has an AS3X+ receiver that I’m going to unlock and I’m going to enable that hand launch mode and it’ll be even easier to launch. Yeah, on three cells it wasn’t half bad either. No, no, it was scooting right along even on three cells, so nice it’s. It’s as fast now on three cells as it was. It might even be faster, as it was on four cells before. Do you launch full throttle or not? No, full throttle, it’s too.

[01:00:54] Much torque, right, and that’s kind of what I was thinking you said before. So just make sure you turn your throttle sensor throttle threshold for the launch mode down lower. Yeah, knock it at 50 or something.

[01:01:08] Yeah I launched it I launched it at about 70 now so give yourself enough room though so if you’re doing.

[01:01:13] About 70 I would do 30 or 40 maybe even 50 percent because it’s it’s feeling that thrust that throw.

[01:01:20] Too, yeah, but yeah, it’ll be even more fun to fly after I nice get to tinker with that. So, yeah, what it was fun to be able to know exactly what we’re pulling, so exactly I don’t know. Yeah, yeah, and art hooked it up to his too and his was about the same, had about the same percentage of headroom on his too, assuming that his speed controller. Yeah, we don’t know exactly what’s in there, but yeah, so cool, got to fly that and I think that was all I took to fly. Yeah, that was it. Yeah, because it.

[01:01:52] Was kind of windy that was yeah and it was a little cold too yeah 45 degrees across the runway yeah it.

[01:01:57] Was although for a windy day it wasn’t bad to fly no daniel flows slow stick that’s right yeah he did.

[01:02:04] That one, oddly enough, handles, handles wind very well. It has no fuselage, so there’s nothing to affect, it’s true? Yeah, yeah, turn it right into the wind, land backwards, yeah, yeah. And then I had multiple.

[01:02:15] Flights with the super cub so yeah nice adding to our numbers we’ll get there fellas yeah I really.

[01:02:23] I had completely forgotten that I had set a goal so now that I know that I’m close I’m going to.

[01:02:29] Push for the end. Yeah, that’s good, actually even very happy way the fms t28 handled in the wind. Yeah, it did not get bounced around nearly as much as I thought it would for a very small.

[01:02:41] Airplane. Yeah, and I told you guys that these were the ones that were racing out in tucson. Oh yeah, fun. That looks like a lot of fun, nice, so I guess we can talk about the new stuff next time. No, we can.

[01:02:53] Do it now okay after okay let’s let’s do my tool of the week first oh yes we can have a short.

[01:02:58] Discussion on that it’s time for rc plane labs tool of the week so as I was soldering my new connector on.

[01:03:09] The f22. It came with a et or g 60, xt 60 plug on it, and since I fly with the ic stuff from spectrum, I had to put a new end on it. Now I had to do the same thing with my f18, and I did that forgetting that I had purchased the soldering jig from spectrum for soldering your ends- battery or fuselage or esc ends- and so this time I finally remembered that I had one and ended up using that, and my goodness,

[01:03:47] That made it so much easier. Yeah, so instead of maybe like melting part of the fuselage like I did on the f18, maybe- like I’m not going to say it happened, but it could have- instead of doing that, I actually had this nice heavy duty soldering or the soldering jig soldering station thing for just the end, putting that on the on the fuselage, handy, handy. Yeah, they make different ones, obviously for what you’re using, but what I like about it is it works as a heat sink.

[01:04:21] So you don’t have to worry as much about melting and deforming before there you go. I was going to say bending, but you’re not really bending, but I have xt60 connectors and stuff that I’ve done before. I have maybe overheated them and not realized and the pins move inside the plastic and no longer align, and not realize until I tried to plug it in. Then you have to start over and go from scratch, but anyway. So yeah, go ahead. I was gonna say so. This one you can do. Ic2, ic3, ic5 and bullet.

[01:04:54] Connectors nice, and it even has the helping hand arm clamp that comes on handy. It’s kind of expensive for what it is- it’s 30 bucks. But I mean, here’s the, here’s the beautiful part, it’s still available, it’s.

[01:05:08] Something you can still buy unlike most of the tools we talk about it actually just came out like.

[01:05:13] Within the last year- I don’t remember when it was- I bought it knowing that I was switching my stuff over to these connectors and then promptly forgot that I had it until I was working because the f22 was hard to get to, because the leads were very short on the esc, so I was having a hard time.

[01:05:32] Stretching and not bending stuff. And then you remember stuff and I was like, oh, I should try this thing. If only there was a tool. I know I, when you forget what you’re buying and you forget what you have, then it’s hard to use it. But- and it’s one of those things- you’re not going to use it often, yeah, but when you need it, that’s the tool for the job. Yeah, I seldom use mine. I’ve got different style.

[01:05:56] Made of aluminum. I seldom use it, and the problem- I just realized that we’re sitting here talking about it’s like: why don’t I like this thing? I don’t like it because it forces you to solder vertically. I solder all my stuff horizontally. Yeah, normally this is more comfortable than straight.

[01:06:11] Up and down, and that’s the reason I don’t like it. So this is set up obviously for the, the vertical, but I’m sure you could easily figure out a way to do it: lean it against a wall or do something like.

[01:06:25] That if you need to 3d print a bracket there you go horizontally yeah so that vertically so I can.

[01:06:32] Solder horizontally. Horizontally, yeah, but what I see. It’s nice, though, because this has the alligator clip on it too, kind of like the little helping hands thing that you can position exactly where you need it and it can actually move around the base, yeah, so there’s multiple holes to where you can.

[01:06:47] Put it in different areas to it’s one of the nicer ones I’ve seen yeah it really is yep it’s I mean like.

[01:06:53] I said it’s kind of pricey for what you’re actually getting it is the right tool for the job but.

[01:06:58] Right, makes that job easier, yeah, and the results are better as long as you remember, as long as you remember that you have it, yeah, and can find it. So there’s your tool of the week. Tool of the week: cool, okay. So real quick. I know we’re running long. A couple of new releases or announcements. I’ll say announcements: old school model works, a new. So it’s a stick. They’re calling it a raider. It’s going to be part of a new line of airplanes that they’re going to offer, I’m assuming they’re going to make.

[01:07:29] Sticks, in various sizes probably, but it’s called the raider and it is a identical outline, I’ll say, of phil craft’s original 1965 stick. Hard to believe almost 60 years of sticks. Yes, we’re all counting up in our heads. Yep yeah, almost like 59 years that this design has been flying- a testament I would say. And how many copies are out to its, to its outstanding qualities? I mean, it just flies a.

[01:08:04] Stick flies great. So anyway, brand new from old school model works. They’ll be shipping in november. They’re taking pre-orders now. All laser cut. It’s all laser cut interlocking assembly- super. It’s going to be super, super easy to assemble. Probably quick build too. Then, yeah, I tried talking lori into letting me grab one, but maybe, maybe, after I get my jet finished, this will be next.

[01:08:29] Easier to ask forgiveness than permission I don’t work that way I’m wondering if you could do that.

[01:08:34] As a low wing. Well, that’s a good question that I was going to ask them. And then also I was going to ask them if you could build the wing flat, because it comes with dihedral braces designed for dihedral. But remember, yeah, we always build them flat, like completely flat. So anyway, new stick from old school model works. Speaking of sticks, a new company kind of splashing down onto the kit scene: aero spaz, aero spaz, aero spaz. Yeah, aero spazcom. They’re-engineering. I’ll say

[01:09:13] Some classic 90s, 80s, 90s pattern planes like a dirty birdie, the mk blue angel and also a 60 size stick in their line. All same thing. High quality balsa and light ply construction, all tab lock. The wing ribs have feet, kind of laser engraved on. You have to break off that you break off. Yeah. So nearly impossible to not build them straight. But these are some.

[01:09:46] Airplanes that you haven’t seen in kit form for a long time, like dirty birdie and the mk blue angel. I’m assuming that they’re going to do more, because these looks like it’s a couple of pattern guys. This seems to be their thing, so hopefully it’ll be some- maybe a curare or a tipper re or something like that in the future, which would be really exciting to me, because I always wanted a curare and never had one cool. So yeah, a couple of new, new stuff out there. I believe they have their kits in stock actually. Oh nice, 399, I think, which is fairly reasonable for a

[01:10:17] Re-engineered balsa imply kit these days because the old school model work kit is 299 so let’s say.

[01:10:24] 300 Seems to be the going rate for most similar items and those are the ones those ones all those.

[01:10:29] Airplanes I mentioned are all designed around a 60 size glow engine or comparable electric power.

[01:10:37] Cool designed around glow. They are well classic pattern airplanes, that’s what they were powered by. So yeah, but the, yeah, the, the osmw, the old school model works kit and their stuff is always so nice. There’s very nice, and he actually on their website they have a electric power package designed for that airplane too. So if electric is your thing, you can go. Electric with a classic stick- cool can’t go.

[01:11:01] Wrong, nope, anything else. That’s it for me. That’s all I get, okay? Well, I guess that’s that then. Well, cool, then, until next time I’m wrong, I’m Tom and I’m really abrupt ending. Well, I mean what? There’s nothing else to talk about? There’s nothing else to talk about. You did this just last time. Was that the?

[01:11:19] Only new stuff that was this week did I am I the only one that did the new stuff I guess I came up with.

[01:11:25] A couple things but we weren’t sure if they were actually new or not so oh yeah that panther and.

[01:11:30] Stuff I saw was released that day was talking about but I think that was I think no yeah shipping.

[01:11:34] I should say so yeah okay pretty sure that was already out apologies for the abrupt ending guys.
