[00:00:33] And that because i saw you very recently you did i had a very nice trip up to your house for a weekend getaway you were hosting me because there was a indoor fly in event what i

[00:00:49] Don't why are you laughing nothing i just thought it was funny that you chose you were hosting me

[00:00:55] It was i my mind was going somewhere else and i had to reel it back in sorry because there exchange student or something yeah exactly well he did he fed me he was really nice very nice but anyway so he had an indoor fly-in first one i heard you guys had up there and we can talk about that in a little bit i think we're getting ahead of ourselves but well to be clear all three of you

[00:01:22] Were invited well here it comes true and once again i could not go because of work yeah so this just continues the tradition terry and i still have yet to actually meet each other in person

[00:01:36] Yes we'll we'll close that loop one day we will hopefully sooner rather than later and you could always come down to illinois i mean that has been discussed oh okay so yeah i think that's probably somewhere in our future sweet yeah i think so too we have to find the right event for him

[00:01:54] Though yeah or maybe there doesn't even need to be an event maybe it just needs to be a a weekend of flying and you just yeah just that's going flying yeah things to plan that we will talk about and then i'm also trying to get him to come to journal oh my that is that would be amazing

[00:02:13] It's on you terry yeah i know i know so between you and fitz and lee i get that i get leaned on pretty heavy for that and again yeah i want to make that happen just like i want to do toledo my problem is the spring

[00:02:31] Which one did we say is in april are they both in april no toledo is in april and then obviously may is when joan all is yeah because it's and unfortunately the first weekend for joan all

[00:02:45] Is mother's day weekend yeah yeah so the april stuff is always hard for me because my daughter's birthday is in the first week my wife's birthday is in the second week then we have an anniversary in the last week and sometimes there's easter so april almost always seems to be difficult to plan around but i guess that excuse falls short for joan all so well i don't know we celebrate birthdays

[00:03:08] For like three weeks at a time so that goes into may you can use that same excuse

[00:03:14] Yeah well i can use that excuse for my own birthday i don't think it would go well to suggest it for

[00:03:19] Anyone else's oh it depends but yeah so we'll we'll hopefully get him to joan all and if not

[00:03:30] We'll get him down here for some flights it's it's hard to i mean i'm terry i'm sure you've you've heard it from lee ray and fits and and and us but it's it's something you have to experience you can't like no one can really truly put it into words really yeah that's what everybody says and that's kind of how

[00:03:51] I describe air venture as well to people who have never been right you can talk about it till you're blue in the face but until you actually go to the thing and experience it you just don't

[00:04:01] Know which i still need to do i will someday yeah and i agree air venture is awesome and it's fun but the hands-on the interactiveness of the everything of rc airplanes at joan all is just amazing

[00:04:15] Well air venture is not about rc oh i know but yeah and i i i get it yeah but i'll make it there eventually just like terry will eventually make it to joan all i'm i'm confident so

[00:04:35] So what next do you want to talk about new stuff really quick sure we can get that out of the way and then we can go on to carrie's house trip i dig it okay speaking of speaking of things that i dig

[00:04:48] Fms is re-releasing the super scorpion the v2 it's a 90 millimeter if you're not familiar v-tail orange and white although the new v2 is also coming in a camo version which is a really really nice looking 540 which puts it a little bit below the viper 90 price but well i mean you got to buy a receiver yeah i was gonna say that's p p so i know i know taking pre-orders

[00:05:18] Now and they will ship november 25th ish i think i saw on the website very very soon that price by the

[00:05:25] Way is the 6s version the 8s version is a little bit more a little bit more i want to say it was 30 bucks more or something i remember i'm having in front of me yeah i think me personally i think i

[00:05:34] Would go with a success just because of the lighter weight with the lighter wing loading i think the airplane will do more i've seen the original version fly when i was down in florida earlier this year a couple guys had them down there and they were making that thing do stuff that jets without vector thrust should not be able to do so i would i think i think if i was to to get one it would

[00:05:59] Be the success version i think anyway well now can you if you buy the 8s version you can still run it with a success right i mean like it should still work i would i would think so but i don't think

[00:06:08] It's optimized for success because the motor may not be happy on success yeah the 8s version is a different motor different speed controller it might even be a different fan i just i just took it as

[00:06:18] It was able to handle the extra voltage whereas you could still hopefully fly it on when i switched

[00:06:25] The 15 to 8s it was a completely different drive system all the way through have you tried it on a success since then no no okay because yeah i don't think it has to have 8s does it well that's kind of

[00:06:37] Sad because i already have success batteries i don't have to buy more 4s you don't have them up

[00:06:42] Just to get the success version but then it's not as fast you'll be happy with the success version trust me i don't know if it's anything like the the first version yeah so anyway the new camo version is pretty pretty cool too that they that they're introducing with it this time but they

[00:06:56] Said on the as version it's 150 miles an hour that's what they said that would be fun yeah and then if you crash it you don't pick anything up because there's nothing left which i've proven yeah it would be confetti i think at that point with the foam and yeah it would just be gone

[00:07:12] It would be a spectacle that's for sure to crash at that speed but yeah that's new from fms so you can expect to probably start seeing guys fly those early december probably i would i would

[00:07:24] Imagine hopefully we'll see some reviews online soon yes and unfortunately that is our down time because of winter and yeah cold and there's that snow and boo yeah it's even worse for you though

[00:07:35] Terry isn't it my winter's worse than yours yeah is that your question i think their climate's about

[00:07:41] It should be similar i mean they get more snow i think probably but i don't know i'll let terry answer

[00:07:45] Yeah well i don't know what yours is like but that's true you wouldn't that's true but being an implant to the green bay area it is and having grown up in florida i expected much worse than it

[00:07:59] Is yeah that's gonna change but how do you how do you handle the cold though because the older i get the more i can't handle the cold it sucks yeah i think it's still a novelty for me so it's not that

[00:08:14] Huge i still think it's fun to run my snowblower down the driveway and so i'm sure all those things will wear off at some point but for now i it doesn't bother me most of the time and i try to go flying off the snow and yeah i try not to stay indoors too much in the winter oh man yeah that would

[00:08:35] Be cool cool oh i didn't do that oh my gosh i'm brilliant without even trying wow no but like i get so cold anymore and like my fingers just get frozen and i just i it sucks but you like it cold though i have a very very narrow window that i'm comfortable in let me see huh okay high maintenance i

[00:09:03] Know i mean yeah you definitely like your house what i would call frigid

[00:09:09] I i will keep it as low as crystal will allow it to be oh so you were probably miserable up here then no actually this time it was fine for air venture last year i'll admit yeah i was i was sprawled out like a starfish but this time it was nice and comfy so i was okay oh yeah and you were in the basement where it's typically a little yeah and last time i was up higher and it was heat rises so yeah but

[00:09:36] Yeah no it was it was fine thank you okay so at the risk of ruining this for you are you guys still looking at that scorpion too yeah i still have it on my phone so i pulled up the website and the first picture is a side view yeah and it's got a pilot figure in there and the first thing i think when i see that is a really short guy driving an suv and they're the seats all the way up front with the steering wheels basically on their chest yeah it is okay it does look kind of funny and that's pretty

[00:10:09] Bad at least it has a pilot that is true unlike they've got blocks on the rotor pedals or

[00:10:17] That's true that's a really big airplane to the scale of the pilot yeah yeah yeah that's funny

[00:10:24] Okay but don't let that deter your excitement oh no i'm so excited because i know how well they fly

[00:10:30] I had one of the durafly vampires and the pilot was so short in it he's like staring at the middle of the instrument panel it's like this guy's a phone book right at least they put a pilot in it

[00:10:42] You're right though i suppose but that camo version looks pretty slick though i i really like that yeah a little decal work on that and that's surprising you're orange all the way i know

[00:10:52] But i really dig the yeah i really dig the camo yeah and this is one of those camo schemes that shouldn't affect visibility in the air shouldn't exactly it's at least it's not silver right silver or gray on gray or any of those low visibility things they really work yeah this should be fine

[00:11:12] Yeah it's funny the top view it looks like they're like he might have his kid in the back seat he's ogling over it right now i am i really like it yeah maybe someday maybe i'll find a used

[00:11:28] One at toledo or something there you go there we go that's the hope cool what else well we missed it by a day last time well that was your fault i mean that was because of me yes you are correct e-flight came out with a sportix 1.1 meter it's different it's a low wing timber a mid-wing timber or mid-wing excuse me i i would have to fly one to see how i feel about it it looks

[00:12:01] Different i mean like it it's kind of a cool looking little airplane small enough to fit in your car 3s or 4s 2200 to 3200 milliamp hour battery so that's nice but yeah shoulder wing

[00:12:17] To be like a shimber shimmer my timbers shimber my timber it's designed from the ground up to offer

[00:12:27] Modern day features conveniences and performances for low time to experience pilots interested in sport and aerobatic flying so they started with the wheels yeah 40 fan or 45 amp esc blah blah blah blah blah ar631 yeah it might be worth looking into though cool little price oh shoot hold on i'm sorry didn't mean to stump you no that's fine 269.99 bind and fly so that comes with the

[00:12:57] Receiver and all that stuff so i don't think it's not so bad terrible and it's not called timber anything they should have called it a timber just for funsies can you imagine the outrage

[00:13:11] The it would have broken the internet yeah but anyway so like i said it looks like cool little airplane i haven't seen one in person yet but i'm sure i will decide i want one once i do probably that's unfortunate yeah it's not a bad looking little airplane i don't think so and like i said good good

[00:13:36] Home yeah yeah every time every time every time yells at us yeah but yeah yeah i'm on silent mode and airplane mode there is no way this thing can make any noise and yet we survive i told you i don't

[00:13:48] Anymore oh okay ever since i started doing it oh so what else terry have you gotten any new airplanes recently

[00:13:59] I can't think of anything that i've received like off the shelf so my only new stuff is old stuff that i've built or the one we'll probably talk about later that i made from scratch

[00:14:12] Mm-hmm so so terry i gotta tell you it was one of the podcasts you guys have done recently you guys were talking about the new old school model works raider kit the stick your name came up well and i was listening and did did i hear you correctly did you did you say you've you've never owned a like a

[00:14:34] Traditional stick right out of all three of us on my show none of us have had a regular old ugly stick airplane you have to get one that's what everybody tells us i mean we feel like frauds once we figure that out so how can that statistically that just doesn't happen yeah you're not alone i've never owned one either yeah so yeah another thing we'll have to close the loop on yeah yeah i mean the original

[00:15:05] Design goes back to 1965 i mean an airplane that has been around that a design that has been around

[00:15:12] That long i think says something about and with so many variations right exactly but i think

[00:15:21] Terry and i are in the same boat as in the one i got from you that tommy the the mini stick or whatever that is that's still a stick the 40 size stick no even smaller the e-flight one oh yeah that's a

[00:15:33] Stick yeah yeah so okay so i've had one of those the okay the original mini ultra stick yeah but yeah i don't know if i would count that as i mean i think it's a stick in name only it's not the full stick

[00:15:45] Experience well and i kind of hope not because i never thought that flew great the well i don't know the one i thought if you have my old one i did i think i sold it oh i thought it flew awesome well i had for what is it the second one that you had oh i never flew that one so i don't i don't know okay but the one that i had previous to that one which was identical to it now identical but flew had been

[00:16:12] Crashed before and that's true so maybe that had something to do with it too before you at any rate

[00:16:17] Terry are you looking to buy one of the new raiders that's not on my list now because i've already got another one of their kits that is in my queue to build okay now if i run across a stick whether it's a raider or one of the other variants i've got nothing against them and if i find a good deal i would probably get one and as a matter of fact great planes used to have did they just call it the electro stick they well they had an electric version of the stick yeah yeah a little bit like either a large park flyer or small sport plane size a friend of mine had one and really liked it

[00:16:53] So and this would have been 20 years ago probably if i find one of those i would probably bring that home and that's got the traditional scheme too red with the call it a maltese cross yeah yeah so yeah i think that i would finally be in your club if i got one of those

[00:17:15] Well i'm just a huge fan of them so and like it's i don't know if i want to say shocking shocking might not be the right word but anybody who's been in the hobby for 20 years plus seems like at some point in that time they've had at least one stick and i was just very surprised a

[00:17:31] Stick a cub and a mustang that's just the three that everybody has to go through at some point i've

[00:17:36] Never had a mustang yeah yes you have oh well you've never had a mustang right no i did i had that stupid hangar nine trainer thing is that really a mustang though i mean it's what it was called i know but was that really a mustang yes okay it was a mustang what you've had the little one right yeah that's a little purple thing oh that's right i guess i have had a couple i guess and you like that one it's okay oh it's okay it flies okay it's not one of those that i would say oh that looks

[00:18:09] Like it flies nice it flies okay really mm-hmm yeah it surprises me it's it's weird it's fast it's not as fast as this little the umx conchendo the little conchendo is faster is it really oh yeah i guess i haven't paid much attention yeah interesting same battery too the 3s 300 yeah yeah a lot cleaner fuselage though yeah less drag on the conchendo yeah yeah yeah so yeah cool and now you have a

[00:18:51] That might put us in a different category i don't know internet searches yeah well i just bought an airplane shocker lead into that so so anyway i saw fms had a sale on their 64 millimeter f18 the another f18 gray i know there's a theme here small f18 well you like what i like so that's okay well so this is the same size as the x-fly the twin 40 like almost the exact same footprint size yeah so i figured it would be neat to kind of do a comparison

[00:19:31] To see the differences in them so i got that one actually got it yesterday assembled it there are some differences between that one and the x-fly one that surprised me yeah well i mean the fms

[00:19:46] Version is a single 64 millimeter and the dura flower the x-fly is 240 millimeter twin 40s yeah same battery

[00:19:54] Which is nice oh that's cool but the and so the the blue angels f18 from f or x-fly is a two seater whereas the fms is a single seater and there's not nearly as much room in the fuselage for batteries it just doesn't seem like the fms one is actually is thought out as well as the x-fly is for electronics for battery placement and all that kind of stuff it is pretty cramped in the cockpit i was very surprised to be honest yeah like i think if i would have done this the opposite way and had that one first i

[00:20:26] Wouldn't have thought anything about it and then when i got yeah sorry and nobody heard that that was not my phone you heard nothing but then as i got the x-fly one if i would have had that second i would be like oh this is cool but going the opposite way it was a little disappointing

[00:20:41] To be honest yeah i could see that i don't like the way the canopy is the magnet is not strong enough yeah i might like just holding the airplane upside down the canopy fell off well the only thing

[00:20:54] That i hope did that was all the wires inside are still not connected to anything because i don't have a receiver in it yet they're pushed against it right and same with the battery connector i don't

[00:21:04] Know so it still felt weak when i haven't played with it but i was just hearing it snapshot oh it is

[00:21:09] Yeah it's very weak and i'm used to the the freewing f22 that i mean like i'm almost scared to pull

[00:21:14] The whole thing apart when i don't know where freewing gets their magnets but good lord they're those are like rare rare rare earth magnets yeah and there's two of them on that one too so yeah i can't hardly get

[00:21:24] The f86 canopy off sometimes it's it just stuck yeah which is kind of how i prefer it yeah well

[00:21:31] Yeah you don't want them popping off yeah yeah while you're flying so anyway we'll we'll get those out

[00:21:37] Together and do some flying and compare them and see what we have and the intakes go from them yeah and that's what i can't get past like the well i didn't even notice it until you pointed it out so

[00:21:47] Thank you yeah the intakes on the on the little fms one are just they're just wrong odd they're not even the correct shape they're not in the correct location it's just ugly if i'm honest but probably

[00:22:00] From 20 feet plus away you'll it'll look fine or if you don't know them as well as you do like i it would not have caught me as such a negative your xy ones look good though they they're an f18 guy how

[00:22:13] Did you not notice that you love f18s well i guess i just didn't okay okay i mean i don't know but the

[00:22:20] Which one are you talking about the new one from fms all right i guess it's not new yeah it's the fms 64 millimeter f18 the 64. you have a 70 and a 64. yeah okay 64 and it's one on sale right now for 120.

[00:22:37] Now i see yeah i'm glad i didn't buy one i'm glad i did especially now after seeing your line stab versus

[00:22:45] Elevators yeah that's a huge deal for me too i don't know why oh yeah those intakes are big

[00:22:51] Yeah they're they're the wrong shape they're not in the right location and it's got cheater holes

[00:22:57] In the front too that seems like it's for airflow but i don't know why it would be unless it's for

[00:23:01] Cooling the electronics yeah battery and whatnot the speed controller is at the back of the airplane underneath that fin and cover yeah open kind of like open so i don't think the holes are for cooling and i don't think they're for cheaters because the intakes are huge because they're the wrong shape so i don't know there's like yeah it's weird yeah like i said from 20 feet away it'll probably while it's flying it'll probably be a blast i'm hoping it flies good yeah yeah if it flies well

[00:23:29] All those other sins are forgiven exactly but the good news is if i crash it i don't care as much

[00:23:39] Next fly one really does look nice it really does i was very impressed the shape is accurate the price version is nice there's plenty of room for the battery you can actually move the battery somewhat to to change your cg if you want to make it a little more tail heavy or more responsive full flying stabs yeah it's just a better looking airplane we'll see how this fms we'll see i bet it flies

[00:24:01] Good i still haven't flown the x-fly one without gear i would like to do that but i i'm we're just

[00:24:07] Running out of time and daylight yeah but anyway we'll see how it goes is this a single fan or

[00:24:15] Two it's a single 64. yeah okay and then the x-fly is a dual 40. yeah gotcha so it sounds cool too when it's flying because especially when they get just a little bit out of sync out of sync yeah

[00:24:28] And it seems to have enough power i mean i think the 64 the single 60 formula is probably going to be more efficient so it's probably going to give you a little more thrust i bet than the 240s but

[00:24:39] I would think that and probably a little bit more time weight wise with the battery i have not gone that far yet no it'd be interesting to see if there's a difference a significant difference of weight yeah i doubt it but i'm just i'm i'm a big fan of the full flying stabs on the x-fly i just having it just looks weird to me on the fms version but we'll see yep we'll probably do that in the spring

[00:25:30] And fly every month or do you even pay attention i don't necessarily have goals to hit x number of flights and let me rephrase that i definitely do not have goals to hit a x number of flights a year but i do like to fly often and like i said before even in the winter so i'll try to keep my thumbs

[00:25:55] Trained yeah yeah it's a good idea i've i've tried to fly well i have flown for the last two years now at least once a month so that does get me flights in every month of the year nice but i do i do think i'm going to change it up for next year though and not have a set number of flights i'm going for because it's sometimes takes the fun out of it yeah you don't want it to start feeling like work yeah i agree yeah thanks laurie

[00:27:36] Attempts before this that you guys were open and we're going to come up here and for whatever reason i couldn't do it and then out of the blue this one popped up and yeah and i had to work yep and

[00:27:49] Then the time you came to brian's right to work and we met at the swat meet yeah and then for air venture last year tommy was out of country in air venture and then when

[00:28:05] Fitz and lee met you guys at joan all i wasn't there you weren't right yeah so yeah the universe has not seen fit to put us in the same place at the same time that's it's funny but not i mean it's

[00:28:18] To the point now where it's just ironic that no matter what happens it seems yeah but that will end

[00:28:24] Hopefully someday we'll find a way maybe toledo and maybe when it happens we'll find out we just don't like each other and we were better off before it could be you never know oh the anticipation i'm

[00:28:36] Pretty abrasive no you're not you're very agreeable tommy's really ai that's what i'm just typing into

[00:28:45] The the computer right now what i well then how do you explain i mean like terry just said i met lee and fitz did you he just said he did well they could probably corroborate that's

[00:28:57] True there were pictures see just drink some out of the crowd come here and stand here 25 bucks to play this guy for the week but anyway so yes terry tell us a little bit about the event you put on because i think you were the one that ran it maybe with the the flying thing sort of i don't want

[00:29:19] To take all the credit for it oh go ahead and do it it's okay okay fine ron would what's that mean

[00:29:27] So it was kind of a last minute deal and by the way you guys are getting the scoop on this because we haven't talked about it on my show yet oh we talked about it beforehand but we haven't recorded a show since it happened okay so anyway so there's a high school up here that's on the eastern side of green bay and they just recently added on i call it a field house they call it something else but basically it's an indoor training center that has about half a football field with astroturf

[00:30:00] And one of the members of my club is friends with the principal of that school and he arranged for us to get access to that new building at the same time that the high school was having a large craft fair and the idea was we can go flying but also have a table at that craft fair to help direct interested people over there check out what we're doing maybe get some people interested in the hobby so it seemed like a win-win thing the the only deal was we had a few weeks to pull it together

[00:30:32] So that's where i came in they asked me to do kind of the administrative side of it to make it happen and pieces fell into place so it all worked out and i was there for the grand opening of this new building and like i said it's pretty dadgum big and i'm like oh we can fly anything in here this place is huge and then ron you were there that night we went for the setup and just like every other indoor venue that i've been to as soon as your airplane is airborne you're like oh wait a minute

[00:31:04] It shrinks very quickly it's not not quite as big as i thought it was that's the lament of many people that know me yeah but but i'm pumped but regardless it's still pretty big and there are very few planes that i had planned to fly there that i couldn't so i i think it worked out pretty well for for for most people in terms of the size of the place and not bouncing off the walls

[00:31:35] But leading up to it we tried to invite all the clubs that are in the area and we actually had people from sheboygan a couple people came up from madison area which was a good two-hour drive you came up from southern illinois so we did central but close central yeah shows you how much i know about the geography of illinois it's okay i've been telling people up here southern illinois so

[00:32:03] If they ask you that's oh okay well i gotta put a little accent on or something well we're south of chicago we might as well be well that's true yeah we're like smack dab in the middle of the state but

[00:32:13] That's okay so anyway it all worked out very well thank you for coming up and for those of you listening thanks to the people who showed up i i think it worked out as well as we could have expected we had there was never still airtime there was always at least a few people in the air and with four or five airplanes flying at once it it was crowded but it was good to see that happening

[00:32:39] Yeah it was a lot of fun now i i don't want you to undersell the size though of the craft fair like when i heard craft fair i'm thinking okay a couple tables whatever oh my god like the school was filled to the brim with craft stuff and they had what do you have like was it three or four food trucks outside there were like people inside selling food and all that kind of stuff too

[00:33:01] Like it was it was big yeah it's apparently a tradition there i'm still new to the area so i don't know all of that but it was stated to me like yeah there the parking lot is going to be full of people at this craft fair and they weren't lying it was a big deal yeah and that again that was part of the appeal for us to have a pool of people to draw from to come check out what we're doing and

[00:33:27] What we're about yeah so is this something that that you're going to make happen every year now that

[00:33:33] Is our goal so and now that it's happened i'm following up with that principal and other people in the school to see if it's reasonable for us to get in there again and part of that agreement is that we want to contribute to the school as well so when they have opportunities for stem events anything we can do to pitch in beyond just putting people on a buddy box right that's what we want to do so we want to sing for our supper as it were and and try to make this a thing that's recurring

[00:34:07] That's pretty cool yeah same time frame every year you guys thinking that same weekend you're

[00:34:13] Yeah let me know your schedule for next year and work it out wait which way

[00:35:12] Comfortable in that space anything umx was fine even like the two and three cell umx stuff nobody seemed to have any trouble with there was a couple of flying wings that were zooming around they were kind of hugging the wall but they were flying around they're fine that one surprised me to be honest yeah there was even a couple six cell quad racers in there i don't think we'll be seeing that again that was a bit much but they had no trouble that was impressive though it was yeah impressive

[00:35:45] Sounding impressive looking they were both excellent pilots that were doing that but just in terms of the optics for people that we want to come watch that right we might want to mitigate the danger levels a little bit yep and and there are certainly some smaller less powerful fpv quads that would be more at home in there so i think we're going to aim for that next time cool but yeah i don't know i i don't recall seeing anything that anybody brought that day that didn't fit just fine several

[00:36:35] Of those yeah there was one of those in there and that was fine oh okay and the way it kind of worked out is there was a racetrack pattern and nobody defined this i don't think but it naturally just began counterclockwise and stayed counterclockwise and then at one point towards the end of the day i'm like hey let's switch directions and that happened for like it lasted for about a minute and then suddenly we're flying counterclockwise again so yeah what is it left turns for some reason most people are just more comfortable going left for some reason yeah i'm not sure but yeah that that seems

[00:37:06] To be the preferred direction yeah so there tended to be kind of a a racetrack around the outside and then three day area in the middle and yeah it just fell into place that way so that big flat foamy

[00:37:20] That i got from jim oh yeah would probably fly yeah that would have been perfect and that would have

[00:37:25] Been part yeah because there were a lot of other airplanes that size yeah they were that were flying

[00:37:31] They were okay cool yeah well sounds like a good limit it really was and the only limitation that i noticed were some of the one cell ultra micro stuff the wheels were too small to really be effective on the astroturf so some of those were hand launched or they would lay out a piece of cardboard or something to take off oh sure yeah yeah other than that i will say so i brought the umx air tractor

[00:37:56] And that one runs on three cell 300 i think i told you you did tell me but terry said it was huge so i flew it in there a couple times but that was a little too fast for that area and not too fast like to actually fly it in there but too fast to be enjoyable with the other airplanes that were around the umx radian was perfect the umx yak that i took i like flying that one too and honestly even the turbo timber evolution was fine the umx one oh yeah was getting that too cool it flies a little

[00:38:31] Bit slower than the air tractor yeah so i don't think i saw your air tractor fly in there that was

[00:38:38] The first night i brought okay i just brought the the bigger stuff the first night and yeah that's that's why i think you were out getting somebody else set up or doing something yeah and it was a little too much and there was not a lot of people there the first night which made it nicer too i think if you got around four or five other people with a plane that size that fast it just would have been more hectic than it was worth yeah and to be clear you're saying the

[00:39:05] First night the event was actually on a sunday morning but we had access the previous evening to do setup setup night yes and within our setup window we got everything done so we're like whoa we're here we have airplanes let's let's fly yeah yeah so setup night well it sounds like a lot of fun i

[00:39:30] Ask if there's normal indoor venues where you guys usually fly not so no but yes now the club that

[00:39:42] So there's nothing in springfield area the club that we're kind of close to in champaign the champaign county rc flyers club has an indoor event that they put on several times actually i think in the next month there or no the next three weeks there's five dates they have really i looked it's about an hour and five minutes away from here but it's in a high school gym i've not been there i've heard it's good sized so i was thinking about maybe making that trek sometime to try it

[00:40:16] I have not i mean this is my first time indoor flying at this event thing and it like i said it's fun and it kind of made me want a lot of smaller airplanes after seeing what other people have built and brought yeah it was kind of neat to see once again it's a different side of the hobby that i don't often right get exposed to yeah i would like to try it someday so if you

[00:42:45] Hanging down right that's a pitching cage right oh okay i didn't think it was yeah a little rectangle that kind of comes down so they can have batting practice within there and yeah i was surprised too because that's offset from the wall quite a bit and it's not real clear how far it's offset but people seem to get the distance right and it worked out yeah i think a lot of people were cutting it shorter

[00:43:11] Than necessary because like me they were kind of afraid of hitting that yeah yeah i expected more carnage than there was to be honest that's good though what i was going to say though is i found out because i brought my 1s batteries for the umx airplanes i brought and i found out that of the eight i had only one was good so that was unfortunate like i charged them all up and stuff before i went up there but whenever i put them in the airplane they just like went to zero voltage yeah what are you

[00:43:45] Doing to your poor batteries well i haven't touched them for ages like it's i don't think i've flown a 1s airplane for well over a year but you flew my 1s ultrax just not too long oh that's okay so these are the 1s 150s you're talking about the 1s 500s yeah which is a little bit different so i came home and i figured i was going to wait to buy them until like spring because there's no need to have them sit all winter but the horizon was having a clearance sale i found out and they had them for two dollars and 69 cents a piece i mean oh there you go so i bought like six of them because

[00:49:46] Friday the indoor thing wasn't until sunday so we had a whole day to kill and so you had to take care of me for an extra day right and so i threw together a little impromptu flotilla fitz has his thing down in houston he calls fitz's fantastic flotilla of fun so we'll call this one terry's fantastic flotilla of fun basically we went to the pond behind my house and i've got a whole bunch of different boats and other people brought their boats and float planes and we just yeah just played

[00:50:22] With our toys like little kids i love flying off water it's a lot of fun it really is and interestingly on this little lake that i live on most people have docks that are on wheels so sometime in november the group of us go around pulling all the docks out for the winter before the lake freezes over well that had happened the week before so my dock was no longer in the water and so it quickly became apparent that we were going to have a lot more fun with the dock out there so a handful of us we just manhandled that thing back into the lake for the day and then at the end of the day we pulled it

[00:50:57] Back out and i think it was worthwhile yeah it was is your spine okay yeah oh i i'm fine like okay it took me a few days but i'm fine now yeah you were on the end that did the heavy lifting yeah terry

[00:52:41] What else we call that a cigarette boat not because it's because of the color it is taken on i get it yeah so like my airplane fleet i have a lot of vintage boats so nothing terribly fast but like old kyosho boats with brush motors which to me are fun but i'm sure there's much faster much more capable boats out there now but i have fun fixing those things up so there were a handful of those and like you said the kyosho surfer dude which is fairly modern but also brushed not very fast but

[00:53:15] Really nimble like that thing turns a 180 in an instant and i don't know how it doesn't flip over because it's very top heavy with that yeah figure on top but yeah it just carves right through it

[00:53:27] It's well behaved like i i think that's the first time i've really driven a boat driven i guess is what you say that's it's highlighted the boat whatever and it was it was a lot more fun than i was expecting honestly yeah especially the sailboats i enjoy right so i'm gonna be honest like good i was just gonna say i'm gonna be honest i've seen those before and i thought my god that's gotta be so boring but it actually is not like i equate that to going out to the flying field of an evening when you don't

[00:54:02] Have much going on you just want to relax and you take a sail plane the same kind of thing like this would be fun like for you without anybody else around if i lived on a lake or something like that just to go out put a folding chair out on the dock and just spend an hour out there doing

[00:54:17] Nothing but that while just relaxing yeah i don't know if i could fill an hour with it but it's good for 20 minutes to half an hour for me it's kind of like sail planes that they're fun to do i like the launches and i like to try to soar with them and climb the challenge of the landing yeah yeah and i really like doing aero toe but when i do that i like to do the toes and then spin back down let's do another toe but i look at the sailboats like i looked at rock crawlers before i had tried them

[00:54:53] They seem just kind of boring like you said and then i had an opportunity to try a sailboat i'm like oh there's something to this it's not a freebie you actually have to use some skill and some strategy to get where you're going and also it'll do things that i didn't realize that it could do like you said ron you were surprised that it could tack into the wind to come back yeah and so yeah there was much more to it than was obvious to me which made it fun yeah and i had the same experience with

[00:55:42] Dragon force 65 which is pretty well known in the sailing community as a great off-the-shelf sailboat for everybody and i think a lot of sailing clubs do like a one design racing class using that

[00:55:59] I got that one a few years ago at a swap meet and oshkosh because i had heard about them how good they are and i had had a couple sailboats before that that i tinkered with but i got that one and i can tell you it is hands down the best sailboat that i've had it does exactly what you expect it to do all the time with no surprises so that's a great one to put people on for their first sailboat experience yes it was to give them a taste of what it's capable of and as you

[00:56:33] Found out later not all of them behave that way nope i feel like i was i feel like i was set up on that one

[00:56:41] So i sort of i i i i built up my courage and my confidence with the one that the he was just talking about dragon force i think and i mean like i said that was very well behaved i could actually control it i i was having fun with it and then and it's forgiving if you do stupid stuff with it it just yeah yeah it just bounces right back and doesn't care and then he pulled out a different i was like well here try this one so i'm like cool this is no big deal it was a big deal

[00:57:12] I couldn't get it to go where i wanted i couldn't get it to go into the wind i couldn't get it to stay above water so yeah did you think broadside to the wind and it would just tilt right over yeah did you sink it i did sink it not fully sunk but if it would have been three more minutes it would have been sunk they haven't seen the photos no i don't think i've shown them pictures of anything

[00:57:45] Well okay so in my defense which i always have to put one on one of your friends was there was kind of explaining to me and he has done sailing like full-scale sailing in in real life and he was explaining to me that pretty much it's okay to let the the sailboat like get close to the water like it doesn't have to stay 90 degrees if you get it down even where it's like 30 degrees or something like that with a sail close to the water it's fine it still works don't go fast yeah don't get scared

[00:58:16] Or anything like that it's okay so that's what i was doing with the the black one and like i said i built my courage or my confidence up a little too high because apparently that one is sealed on the top whereas and what's the small white one there's a smaller white one i think it's called a

[00:58:37] Westward it's a horizon hobby product oh of course so it apparently is not gone it's it's not sealed like the battery hatch is not sealed like the the dragon force but i think it's made for lighter wind conditions and it was pretty windy by the time we pulled this out so yeah i handed you a grenade when i put this light wind sailboat in your hands yeah and while we're talking about this you guys mention

[00:59:38] Better like i have to give him some credit that was after i got back from wisconsin i was like hey what i didn't crash terry's plane let me crash yours and you didn't well i i mean not crash but we were doing silly stuff with them oh that's not crashing yeah it was okay so with that one tommy it was completely dark out which i don't normally fly completely dark and trying to see how low we could

[01:00:17] So back to the sailboat that i got set up with it was not sealed on top like terry said and so i i was driving it or whatever you do to those the same way sailing it the same way as the other one without even thinking about it and of course i couldn't get it back to the dock that i was on so terry went to his neighbor's dock he's like well here just bring it over to me which i couldn't do that either and so yeah one of his friends had to go out in the boat to grab it because it was

[01:00:49] Sinking yes i think it would have stayed there forever because i think it had some air trapped in the hole but the stern of the boat was totally submerged it's it's not quite vertical but yeah it's

[01:03:45] He said he's done it in real life so that gives you a little bit of an upper hand on knowing what to do i think maybe but he put me to shame i don't you did great with the dragon force so yeah well i mean i at least was able to control it but he seemed to be able to get some speed and stuff out of it that i wasn't able to do so yeah yeah well that has to do with the rigging and tuning well it was doing the exact same it was just who was on the sticks at that point i know on

[01:05:00] Oh do you remember that tommy yeah nice thing about mine is it's sealed first off and you can take and lay the sail in the water and it'll pop right back up oh wow so that's really nice

[01:05:13] Probably that horizon one is supposed to be sealed with tape around the hatch but ain't nobody got time to do that every time so anyway i got time for that well yeah because you have to take that hatch off in order to turn it on right no i did set it up with a switch the first run of the day you got to take the hatch off to plug in the battery but after that you can just turn the switch on and off

[01:05:36] Yeah mine's set up the same it's got 10 screws it takes a while to turn the boat on for the first time but you plug it in for the day when you're done you take the hatch off so that any moisture

[01:05:46] Gets in there will evaporate i can imagine those have to go like a month on a battery though i mean like there's hardly anything on there that uses it's two servos and a receiver yeah that dragon

[01:05:58] Force uses double-a dry cells and i've had it for two years now it's on the original batteries that were in it when i bought it which i have no idea how old they were wow yeah wow that is impressive yeah yeah so they're gonna die at some point probably in the middle of the lake

[01:06:13] But yeah as long as you're the one that's doing it and not like me that's okay i would feel bad no but it was fun and then i think out of all the stuff we did that day though the highlight for me was the zigzag racers yeah so in anticipation of doing a little boating

[01:06:36] I made i think zigzag there is zigzag or the boat division of hobbico okay yeah i think

[01:06:47] Their hobby zone which is yeah these are horizon yeah oh was it no no so hobbico had their own and this was not the hobbico one this was the horizon version they both had very similar looking boats that could turn upside down and would write themselves so and before you guys came over i made some buoys out of pool noodles and some leftover copper pipe and we did that to set up a simple

[01:07:17] Three-point course just off the dock and i also had three of these zigzag racers which are really simple brush motor they use a six volt speed 400 motor and originally they used a six cell or seven cell nicad but i converted them to a two cell lithium ion and they're not incredibly fast but man are they maneuverable they're agile yeah i they've got to be pulling i don't know how many g's laterally around

[01:07:52] To turn it's just insane to watch them turn so we had three of these which are identically set up so they're equal speed and we tested that out so basically it was stock car racing for us we traded the transmitters around and we would we were figuring out as we went along at first we were just doing races outside of the cones and that worked well but we started doing variations on that theme where we would do how would you describe it ron where we went around a cone so we would go outside of two

[01:09:01] People were cutting buoys and it's fine it was the honor system but man did we have fun doing that yeah lots of that was that was my favorite and hollering and and not only are these boats maneuverable they're tough too because i know we had at least a couple full speed broadside hits and no damage that i can

[01:09:21] Tell yeah there that was impressive because there were when you're so when you're not doing just an outside course and you have to go around there was a lot of times where i was like just stopping and waiting for people to make sure i didn't hit them but it didn't seem like everybody was being as careful so there was a lot of courtesy is not expected it's not my boat be different if it was but yeah so it was it was a blast though like i said it was it was fun because nobody had an advantage it was the exact same setup so it was all on skill yeah and at one point we made the course a little

[01:09:57] Bit tighter because i think it was just more exciting the boats excel at maneuverability rather than flat out speed yeah so we closed it in so we were turning more and yeah that i agree with you that was the most fun part of the day and we did it a few times oh yeah there was there was a bunch of different heats yeah so one of the boats was a little bit troublesome it kept having the the prop shaft break loose it's just a friction fit of on the i guess you would call it a pulley or an adapter to

[01:10:31] The motor so that one went in for repairs a couple times but it's working now but based on that experience i'm like i really need to get some backup boats if we're going to do this more often and maybe we can do more than three next time so i mentioned that next to you ron and next thing you had pulled up this ebay listing that had a dozen of them so long story short that that dozen

[01:10:57] Boats is in my basement right now did they come with a stockpile of like extra batteries and parts

[01:11:03] And stuff no actually i made a deal with that person because they had the stock nikad batteries and i'm sure they're 10 years old and not that great so i said can i buy it without the batteries and so that's how we worked the deal out so yeah i they all need a little bit of work but they seem to be complete i've matched up some that are ready to go others that need to have modern radios put in them because originally these have 27 megahertz radios and there's only six channels that it used

[01:11:35] Within that so i was trying to get a variety for my own stash that didn't have any overlapping channels and then there's some of them where the the onboard radio gear which is not like a receiver and a servo it's one printed circuit board with everything on it so if that's dead you just got to chuck the whole thing yeah so there's a couple that will be converting and several more that are fine so i think the next time we pull one of these flotillas together we can run five or six of these at the

[01:12:06] Same time and and then probably have some backups as well yeah it's gonna be fun it is

[01:12:14] I don't want to build it up too much but yeah you you can though like i said i i think the the matching everything speed wise and stuff is what made it more fun than anything it's not like anybody had their own that was quicker or anything like that so it was just very very even and it was all just about who could drive best or just cut the most and not get caught right who was the most

[01:15:11] But we did have a really interesting visitor out the field we got an american bald eagle which is not very common for us to have yeah not down here it's not really no i think he got blown up we've had so much south wind for the last week i think he got blown up from the st louis area

[01:15:31] About two miles away from here yeah i mean they're just not super common up here yeah and he's never been we've never had one at the field before i have yet to see one here the turkey buzzards were there in for us i had 13 or 14 of them we counted but then they just all disappeared boom gone and about two minutes later here comes this eagle nice and they wanted no part of that he did a few circuits at the field and drifted off in a thermal it was quite thermally that day really is that a word i don't know sure anyway so he drifted off and he was gone for five minutes and all the turkey

[01:36:19] Transmitters for different airplanes well i have two transmitters but i'm i'm not currently using my ix12 well you're talking about switching stuff considering yeah i was considering putting all my nitro stuff on the ix12 and then everything else on the on the 14 and the reason for that is like so my ix12 is older it's not as new as it used to be right so like and nitro stuff tends to get messy just the nature of dealing with nitro engines so i thought well if i bind all my

[01:36:55] Nitro stuff to the ix12 it has all the programming i could ever need for anything that i fly that's nitro and while yes it is kind of a kind of a pain to turn it on and an hour later it'd be able to finally fly it's not that bad but i wouldn't mind getting my ix12 messy if i could if it would allow me to keep my ix14 new looking okay that was that was the that was the whole reason behind it but i'm i don't know we'll see i mean i still like the feel like the ix12 so i i programmed the beast

[01:37:32] To it thinking maybe brian might want like a complete ready to go setup obviously he didn't want the ix12 but while i was doing that i i holding it in my hands was more comfortable to me than than even the ix14 right now like it's still to me it's still more comfortable than any other radio i've ever i've ever held the 12 is interesting but it's just something about the way it's balanced like the ix14 has it's not as big as a 20 but the 14 has a bigger screen and there's

[01:38:05] More transmitter below my hand where i would hold it so it feels like i'm constantly trying to and i the balance feels off yeah i fly weird like i fly way up here by my i pull the transmitter way up like if you look at pictures you can see it's like it's almost at my chin when i'm flying the way the 12 is balanced that's comfortable and the 14 i find that i'm sometimes like trying to still find a comfortable position to hold it so that's fine i still like the ix12 i really do i mean i like the way it feels the resolution is fine the link is is i've never had a problem with

[01:39:03] The origin of that goes back a little while there was a time period when i was doing a lot of airplane reviews for magazines and back when hobbyco and horizon were separate if you're reviewing a hobbyco airplane they wanted it to have a futaba radio system in it so i've always had a an up-to-date futaba system and same thing with hobbyco they would want a spectrum system in there so i always had one of each and also i had high-tech stuff as well for the also rands and so i automatically

[01:39:38] Have these different radio systems so i want to use them and i have a collection of receivers so just that alone i have enough airplanes to use all of them so i do now you made fun of me or maybe you just commented but you were talking about why do you probably made fun of you like that's what he does

[01:39:58] Lovingly i was using my using the dx8 for my indoor stuff and the ix12 for kind of everything else spectrum i don't know exactly the reason for that other than when my ix12 was new to me it was super fancy and probably the nicest radio i had i'm like i don't want to take this to an indoor event where there's people stepping over stuff and like i i'll take my older dx8 i'll bind that to all my indoor stuff and that way a i don't have to take two transmitters and b i'm taking my transmitter i don't care as much about so that was i think the origin of that and i just haven't had a

[01:40:34] Big driver to change there yet but now that my dx8 is pretty much full i'm at that threshold so we'll see

[01:40:43] Yeah like i'll be honest i've gotten used to the feel of my ix20 and that is a very comfortable radio even though it's bigger like that doesn't bother me with the actual physical size difference and when i used your ix14 tommy the other day it felt not bad by any means but just i noticed a huge difference in feel of that radio so i could get used to it yeah like if that was all

[01:41:41] Guys because i've got the ix12 i have never used the android features of it is that something you

[01:41:48] Guys have utilized i have but because of the speed or lack thereof of the of the processor in my ix12 i i don't use it anymore but yeah on the 14 i do on the 14 well i mean so the ix14 i will use the wi-fi i will use the google apps i will use a lot of that stuff to go out and find updates for the transmitter or like the other night i was doing some programming with it i forget what i was

[01:42:18] I was working on my jet and i didn't have my phone next to me and i wanted and i was trying to find a setting i think i was looking up synapse stuff i think and i just opened up the browser right there in the transmitter and i mean yeah it's not quite as fast as like as my cell phone or whatever but it worked it worked fine yeah so yeah if it's hooked on to wi-fi or bluetooth even

[01:42:41] It it does it does pretty well yeah but you're just using it to update the firmware of the transmitter essentially yeah so when these when these things first came out and they were touting all the benefits of android we're like well what is your transmitter going to become like your phone is no longer just a phone it has all these other functionalities so do they envision that sort of adaptability for your transmitter and we didn't know the answer right and now what are we five

[01:43:12] Years down the road i would say we still don't know the answer i would say the answer is no okay because i mean the the reason they run that is because the airware software is built on the android base i mean it's it's running the same software like an android tablet does just for ease of them programming and stuff i've used like mine to watch youtube videos before but that's a novelty that's not something that i would do every day exactly so having said that i think that's based on android is helpful for things

[01:43:47] Like as tommy said wi-fi bluetooth being able to transfer instantly download updates from the play store transfer files yeah all that kind of stuff makes it very easy too yeah like i can it it takes me

[01:44:03] 15 seconds to transfer a model setup from my transmitter to ron's yeah and it's easy to unpack

[01:44:09] And install when you have it that way too that part like i said just is cool based on the android system having all that stuff in the background but as like using it for looking up recipes or whatnot and having it sitting on your countertop while you're cooking no yeah so an interesting thing happened

[01:44:31] With my ix12 the other day i went to look for firmware updates and connected to the play store and all of that and then logged out of it and because of all that i had to change the password on my gmail account and in doing that it it sent a verification to my transmitter check your spectrum ix12 to verify this message like what it's treating it like a regular device like my phone or something yeah and i didn't have the option of doing something else so i had to boot up the transmitter again and confirm this message

[01:45:08] Which i found oh surprising yeah so like i said yeah it works just like a a tablet yeah when you do the sign in things like i've i've had it before we recognize you log in from a different device right yeah yeah and it usually comes through to my phone because i think that's the main thing i have on that account but yeah you can do the same thing on the transmitter when it's hooked up to to wi-fi and stuff it'll go through that way unfortunately the ix12 has hit end of life

[01:45:39] For updates and stuff yeah horizon's not going to be making any more updates for that one nope unfortunately

[01:45:47] So it doesn't get the as3x stuff or the as3x plus and all that stuff either the new one that just came out which is sad yeah moment of silence for the ix12 i mean really to be honest yeah to be honest so that that was a groundbreaking type transmitter i mean oh yeah when it came out when it came out that was that was it so yeah i'm glad to see they came out with some that were a little bit faster and

[01:46:18] Actually usable really but i'm thinking about getting rid of mine there's no reason to hold on to it well you're not going to get much for it let's i'm going to get more than i'm going to get if it just sits in my transmitter case is a secondary radio that i forget to charge and when i need it i don't have a

[01:46:32] Charge radio that happened don't forget to charge it well it it's right next to your other radio

[01:46:37] Yeah so when you charge one charge both now i'll just put one in that has double batteries oh for a trainer for a trainer one yeah i've got heck i can even throw i have a dx8 for that yes i can

[01:46:48] Do that too so i still have my dx8 i don't have mine sitting over there as a i don't have any plans

[01:46:54] To get rid of it well i don't either because what are you going to get 20 bucks well but i mean it's a

[01:46:58] Good radio still yeah but mine is easy to use and so gen one's really that's what's in laurie's airplane that's what's programmed to her airplane so it'll never get used somebody check on dave

[01:47:11] Oh he's he checked out okay what are you going on this this high-end spectrum stuff i live in dx world so and getting ready to leave that yeah so i'm i i got nothing to say well you'll be high-end radio though when you get this other one though with features and radio but it's just

[01:47:30] You guys are using not spectrum spectrum yeah yeah and that i mean it's what you get used to and what

[01:47:36] You stick with so if i could make a recommendation don't do anything with your dx9 oh no i'm gonna hang

[01:47:44] On to that just in case there i've got some projects that i don't want to use a higher-end radio for so cool oh yeah i'm definitely not going to get rid of the dx9 until it decides to quit working yeah and you never know when that could happen i will say with the model switching issue

[01:48:02] It might be sooner or later that's second gen though right that's one of the talk scene stuff

[01:48:07] Yeah it talks yeah so that's still a newish radio yeah it's it works fine i can't do any ford programming

[01:48:14] With it but right that that's the big hold up so yeah like i said if you need to you can use one of our radios just to do that and then get back out yeah but like i said slowly but surely we're weeding

[01:48:28] Out all the spectrum stuff see that'd be another good reason to hang on to your ix12 in case somebody

[01:48:33] Needs to use some forward programming here you go see well you'll have yours still so i don't need

[01:48:40] Mine oh okay maybe i don't know we'll see i'm wishy-washy i go back and forth you do if it's that's okay 100 bucks or whatever it is and that's more money for something else it's another airplane

[01:48:52] It's actually the x9 i can just throw in the flight box i don't even carry it in a case it just goes in the flight box if i break off a switch yeah just replace it yeah yeah no big deal if it gets knocked

[01:49:03] Around a little bit the screen gets a scratch in it yeah but see that's how i am with my x22 though like it's a tool that i want to work like i don't care if it gets a scratch on it or something like that i just see i i've never been that way i just as much money as we spend on these things i try to take care of them as best as i can i'm not saying i'm going to go throw it in sand and you don't care if you do but i'm not going to be upset if something accidentally happens to it right unless it's really

[01:49:31] Bad thing is digging me more than anything is the rubber pads keep peeling off the back of it i have to keep gluing those back on yeah it's like stop yeah because that's just uncomfortable yeah i get it i'm flying and my finger's digging on it yeah kind of like a scab yeah

[01:49:50] Picking at that instead of flying your airplane
