[00:00:11] Hello everyone and welcome to the rc plane lab podcast i'm one of your hosts tom and i'm dave hello guys i'm not how are you i'm good i nailed that you have to you have to admit
[00:00:24] Yeah you did great thank you we'll go back to me next time yeah i think that's probably wise
[00:00:33] Well so it literally has been like two days i think since we recorded our last episode three right three days we're trying to work ourselves up a little bit because we have a very special event coming up that rhymes with the whole mall maybe i shouldn't have said it that way but rhymes with interesting choice of words rhymes with flow fall sure is that better yeah that's that'll work that way i didn't say it but we do have a lot to talk about we do we have
[00:01:03] Flown quite a bit we did we've maidened between tommy and i nine airplanes in one day yep successfully successful maiden maiden yes big maidens and yeah in my case it was a big
[00:01:20] I don't want to steal your thunder what'd you do i made into my jet you flew your jet my boomerang ranger has been flown finally yes and i got to do the maiden which was we'll talk about it
[00:01:30] Later but very very exciting very important to you thank you also we have a new radio in the group dave has finally received his whatever this thing is no thanks to the united states postal service i
[00:01:45] Don't know what it is i just blanked it's it's a free sky xs20rs or x20rs excuse me so dave came
[00:01:53] Carrying it in like it was like a new baby it was really really it was cute and it was weird he was singing to it and everything it was stroking rightfully so i mean it's an attractive transmitter i think it's cool is it free sky or fr sky or what goes both ways i depends on who you talk to
[00:02:10] Whether or not shut up it depends on who you talk to it's either fr sky or free sky and i tend to go towards free sky myself but i will occasionally call it fr sky so it's easier to say
[00:02:23] Where's the e come from but there yeah there's no i don't know it's more frisky than anything
[00:02:29] Right that it's frisky yeah frisky yeah it's just one letter short of that actually but like with the capital f and the small r how like you abbreviate some words like mr for example m capital m like so maybe it's a so it's like father sky yeah father sky maybe i don't know i know it's
[00:02:48] Definitely not the name that attracted me to it so for sure nobody knows nobody knows nobody knows
[00:02:53] But it is what it is probably just a bad translation of something it could be but we'll see maybe we
[00:02:58] Can get that cleared up here in a couple episodes maybe they meant to put an m there instead of the
[00:03:02] F mr sky i don't know pure conjecture we have no clue yeah not a clue but day seems to be happy with it so i am extremely happy with it yeah and then the other thing we'll talk about is my trailer
[00:03:16] And the updates we have made on it very exciting so far too and what it's probably i'm very excited about that too is what i meant so yeah almost as much fun honestly working on the trailer as it is working on an airplane i said almost but it's been fun actually yeah it looks really really good yeah it's been a blast i can't wait to for you to put pictures on the website hilarious i can't wait
[00:03:41] That was it was fun so who wants to go first are we going to talk about dave's radio we're going to
[00:03:46] Talk about flying stuff or my airplane or my trailer i think dave's probably the most excited about what he brought for show and tell so let's let dave start dave have at it okay so my dx9 is getting a little long in the tooth it's only 15 wait it's longer than that or older than that isn't it dx9's 2007 ish i was gonna say for dave that's new right that's new to me but yeah okay yeah no
[00:04:12] It's been around a while it's working perfectly no real issues with it except for user related
[00:04:19] Id10t problems yeah that's not very nice yes i didn't know if he caught it or not i know what
[00:04:25] That is he knows what that means oh spectrum is no longer updating it you guys go your so-called free upgrade to what 20 channels well i got the upgrade to 20 he already had he already paid for his 20 he had the paid subscription exactly yeah it's okay anyway it was getting to the point where i was needing something a little more powerful and more up-to-date a little more capable a little more capable dx9 does pretty much everything i do i don't fly anything horribly
[00:04:59] Complicated but it was no longer able to support the ford programming and other other things and it just which is nice yeah having that ability the speed controls with the reverse built in i couldn't access any of that right so it was time to upgrade and i started looking around and i just spectrum just wasn't doing it for me anymore pricing was a little high for what you were getting i mean you're getting great radios don't get me wrong they're they're really really nice yeah
[00:05:32] But i was seeing other options out there sure and talking to other members from the podcast and the internet we were they were recommending other manufacturers i was looking at fly sky and radio master and all those others that are out there and i had a couple people recommend to me to take a look at the free sky radios that they were using in jets yeah and high-end helicopters and so forth so i started looking at them and it's like wow this is a well-built radio
[00:06:07] Does everything i wanted to do and then some i'm still discovering stuff it can do you will be for a long time so i'm i didn't even know some of this stuff existed not to mention being
[00:06:19] Able to do it well and to be fair to be fair i'm still like learning stuff with my ix14 yeah same with me and so yeah i think once you once you get into the more capable radios unless you're really really maybe even involved with designing them you probably are in the same boat you probably discover new things every time you sit down and tinker with it so well the nice thing about computer
[00:06:44] Radios too is you get the updates you get changes you get things constantly getting better yeah yeah
[00:06:50] This seems like they update these things like every other month or so yeah this is a brand new radio i had to update it i mean they didn't have them in stock this was manufactured they shipped it out yeah and it was out of date right yep so just in a matter of a few weeks there was an update cool sorry i have too much ice in my cup it's okay his cup overfloweth his cup overfloweth with ice
[00:07:13] Iceth iceth over iceth over careful how you say that yeah anyway so it's up to date having to learn a lot i've never had to use a computer with a transmitter before and now i've got basically this entire transmitter is back up on my computer which is ancient i need to update i was gonna say
[00:07:35] Did you get a new computer too does it support windows 3.1 windows 10 goes out of service what
[00:07:42] In january so i need to look to upgrade my computer too but one thing at a time one thing at a time
[00:07:50] And this is more important yeah learn this thing and then and then worry about a computer because this like i'm assuming like most computer radios this one has wi-fi and it can hook onto your
[00:08:01] It does not do wi-fi oh really yeah it does have to be plugged in that is one thing we've noticed amongst the other higher end radios that they they are bluetooth i guess i guess it's bluetooth that
[00:08:11] They do it on well ours has both bluetooth and wi-fi yeah this one does have a usb-c cable
[00:08:18] That's also the charging cable which i really don't mind too much because i know there's not gonna be any missed bits in the translation because it's just going through the cable yeah there's checksums and stuff so they know it's okay but i it'd be nice if i didn't have to plug it in but it's not really bothering me but you also didn't spend two grand on it no i'll be fair this radio i end up spending 650 on this yeah so it's considerably less how many channels
[00:08:49] It's 24 channel 24 yeah 24 channel it's got enough buttons to kill a horse it does have a lot of buttons yeah i'm looking at it right now and yeah there's a lot of buttons get two extra trims beyond your normal four trims so you got those plus you got pots you got momentary buttons and they're all i'm
[00:09:08] Assuming they're all because it's so customizable they're all assignable they can be all assigned
[00:09:12] Whatever you want you can make them do whatever you want to do i think that's pretty much standard
[00:09:15] With most of the higher end radios because we can do that with ours too touch screen and and when i
[00:09:21] Say ours i mean our spectrum i access yeah yeah it's touch screen as well as nice you can use the buttons as well it's whatever you feel like and i've kind of got in a kind of a hybrid mode where i'll touch screen some things and use the jog wheel on other things cool you just kind of develop a pace i guess and the touch screen nice though touch screen is nice having a touch screen and
[00:09:42] I didn't think i would when i first got that my the ix 12 when i remember when i first got that and it was slaggy and laggy and all that and then yeah i finally got a the ix 14 and oh man the touch screen
[00:09:55] Is the way to go touch screens and my body chemistry don't generally work very well i get a lot of miss cues and so forth well yeah this has really been super super accurate well there's a difference in
[00:10:05] Types of touch screens too i don't remember what they are but there's one that doesn't work nearly as well yeah and i think those have kind of gone by the wayside more recently they were cheaper
[00:10:14] Things yeah wonder if that's what was in the ix 12s because it would i would touch it in one spot but it would register the yeah attack somewhere else yeah and i've got a screen protector
[00:10:24] On this one so i was kind of thinking that might throw it off no it's beautiful it's what works great nice it's took me six hours to program the first plane into it first radio well a lot of
[00:10:37] That was stop six hours though come on it's his first time with the radio okay the big problem was
[00:10:46] I was if it was just a straight using a free sky receiver it wouldn't have been nearly that long but i was using the add-on multi-module that goes on the back oh to allow it to speak other
[00:10:56] Protocols it speaks to just about anything did you catch what i said there did you hear that
[00:11:01] It sounded like i knew what i was talking about oh yes i didn't know what you meant a majority of what i've got a program for right now are spectrum receivers and it's been working beautifully cool
[00:11:12] Now will it and i'm not asking to be a jerk or anything because i honestly legit don't know the answer to this but so with the module that speaks dmss whatever the spectrum protocol is yeah can you access the as3x on like the newer receivers with it so you said earlier it doesn't
[00:11:33] Do forward programming it does not as it sits there is a third party script that can be downloaded into it third party app okay that will allow you to do forward programming and as3x plus and then do whatever you want to do okay i have not currently downloaded that into this radio okay i just but
[00:11:56] Fr3 sky whatever it is they have their own stabilized receivers though right yes so okay
[00:12:02] Yeah the only reason you would need the as3x programming app would be if you have a spectrum receiver that you're using as a third party that is something that is available to work it is available to work in it and like i said i have no experience with it at this point but i know it's out there yeah sweet as far as stabilized receivers go they offer quite a few different ones and different channel counts this is also a twin protocol it does 2.4 gigahertz and 900 megahertz simultaneously okay at the same time at the same time and so if one is that legal in the states no clue i thought
[00:12:38] The 900 megahertz stuff was oh your i didn't think your old mobile phone was 900 megahertz
[00:12:46] Okay i'll have to look that up because i because i remember reading somewhere that the 900 megahertz was kind of like the old days certain frequencies were set aside for certain certain
[00:12:54] Things i thought i could be wrong yeah yeah it must have been cleared at some point otherwise it wouldn't be able to right exactly now you can get in there and adjust the 900 megahertz output and you may be able to exceed what's legal that's what it was yeah the power like the i forget what
[00:13:12] It's and i don't know what the power limits are so forth i haven't messed with it it's all coming back to me because one of the other one of the youtubers i think it was lighter side they did a he did a comparison like of the radio master and the fr sky and all the transmitters and the radio master signal wise like killed everybody like it was it could see air quotes over hills and through obstacles and stuff like that but that's because it was transmitting at 900 megahertz at a power level that was not technically legal yeah so i gotcha okay so that's what
[00:13:47] That okay so you went by cheating well right but so 900 megahertz is is not the it's not the
[00:13:55] Problem it's the output it's the output okay cool it's just a nice little backup i've never had any real problems with the 2.4 in a congested area or anything that apparently some people i have especially like at big events and so forth this has been but it's just a nice little backup i know it's there working in the background just in case something bad happens yep and it'll compare back and forth between the two and fix any issues so have you have you flown anything with it yet what does it feel like it's a little bulkier heavier than my dx9 of course pretty much anything
[00:14:27] These days is heavier yeah yeah the dx radios were light like comparatively speaking even to our ix's
[00:14:34] There wasn't much in them well that's true compared to you i mean just a battery and that's that's majority of your weight that's true was that rechargeable even with those double a's dx yeah it's rechargeable it's i can remember where the where that came in to where it went from the four double
[00:14:49] Lays all the way out my dx8 has rechargeables in it my first gen i couldn't remember what mine was
[00:14:54] It's got a lipo in it even okay i think mine's a life i think yeah life yeah it's a lithium battery of some sort but i don't think it's a lipo same for this one yes yeah but you've not flown
[00:15:08] Anything with it yet not anything yet because we haven't had great weather and the weather's been
[00:15:11] Pretty bad and i've been extremely busy are you excited to fly your first oh yeah i'm just itching it's like okay what's i was thinking it's like man what's the weather like today we're about to
[00:15:19] Throw something in the air i was thinking oh man i totally should have brought the terry dunkel you should have man i almost did too but oh well yeah it's kind of rainy and so what airplane
[00:15:32] Are you gonna fly first with it whatever i can grab well what's what's programmed already i have a majority of aircraft that are living in the house in it a lot of you everything in there currently is electric there's no gas or glow in it currently i tried to put a glow plane in it and that's the one i did have one receiver that refused to talk to it and it was an older spectrum six channel i can't remember six thirty six i don't know it's an older spectrum and for some reason it wouldn't talk to it yet i had another one of those in another electric plane and it worked
[00:16:05] Just fine so there must be something off with that particular receiver yeah it just happened to be the
[00:16:10] One that was in my glow i was going to try if that's the difference between dsm and dsm2 it was it was a dmsx oh that's the new one newish one i don't know there's probably something wrong with
[00:16:20] That particular receiver regardless we're good i'm thinking probably something umx just in case i have a dumb thumb incident but it all looks good so what does it take what does it take to set
[00:16:35] This up to like let's say you buy an e-flight umx bind and fly whatever like a waco maybe yeah
[00:16:43] That's the first thing i programmed into it was the waco how neat it's actually not bad at all it's programmed exactly like a spectrum as far as you have to tell it what switch to use you have to flip the five times or whatever it is the only real programming difference between this and using a spectrum was you have to get into the transmitter the transmitter side of it and turn on the external module which is the multi-module you have to turn it on and then you
[00:17:18] Have to tell it what protocol it should be using and that's the only reason is that part of like the
[00:17:23] Binding process or pre-binding process yeah and then once you're into that then you hit the bind
[00:17:26] Button oh okay it is super super simple to do you just hit the airplane button you go over here rf system and you've got internal modules you don't want that because this is using a spectrum receiver you've got the external module you've pushed that button oops it was already down so you push that state is currently on because it was well i don't know what i just did i just bumped the screen so we'll have to fix that we'll just hit the return button i don't know why it crashed
[00:17:58] And then you have to tell it it's spectrum and then what protocol and then as after you do that you just go down here and click the bind button which there it is now it's binding so i wonder how
[00:18:09] That works with the the newer spectrum receivers that have the airplane programming in the receiver should be pretty simple probably doesn't i wouldn't think doesn't work with them or there's no
[00:18:20] Difference i wouldn't think there would be and once again just talking out because i have no clue but i wouldn't think that would give you the information from the receiver onto that radio yeah i don't think
[00:18:29] It could it won't be able to download it no telemetry but the receiver no not telemetry i'm talking
[00:18:34] About i don't think when you bind to it it's going to say hey here it is so so yeah you will have to
[00:18:41] Manually program it like you would before that ever came along but and then when it comes to the as3x settings it uses whether it's pre-built into it yeah if it's bind and fly it just lives on the plane yeah all my as3x stuff works exactly like it did with spectrum radio yeah i just can't get in there and adjust it at this point if i wanted to i could download that program and free party app yeah yeah cool but i don't see any reason to do that at this point because everything i've ever had with as3x and it's worked pretty good for that particular airplane yeah it's for when you're setting up
[00:19:13] Something from scratch not something that bind and fly or something like that what i do
[00:19:17] I have one airplane that i can think of that would need that and that would be the slow stick with the flaps i put on it where i have as3x only working on one aileron yep that could technically need be programmed once again i could bring it to you guys if i don't want to install this yeah you guys
[00:19:37] Can do that and then they would know what to do with it and i think oh no as i say on the on that receiver i mean if you still have the spectrum programmer app on your computer you can still program it that way but i don't think you can i don't think you can use the programmer app for the
[00:19:52] Newer ones no no it doesn't work because i'm through forward programming yep yeah okay well maybe
[00:19:58] That's something that so yes i should probably download that to have it on here for that particular situation but that's the only thing i can think of that i'm going to need it for so i can't wait
[00:20:08] Till you fly your first plane with it see what the see how it feels like the response so
[00:20:13] We're going to start with simple cheap stuff and move our way up cool it means so dave likes his new
[00:20:20] Radio and you have it's handsome like it's a handsome trend like i'm holding it in my hands right now and it's it feels good it's a good looking it feels nice dave said that the gimbals you can actually kind of rotate them a little bit so like if you're a thumb pilot like me you don't always pull straight down maybe so you can actually kind of rotate the gimbals to to match your oh that would be which i think that'd be i mean might be something worth looking into if you do that
[00:20:48] You're not going to be comfortable flying any other plane on any other radio if you're used to that well that's true but yeah like that's the one thing it's nice about having some standardization to
[00:20:57] But if you're if you're like you you don't fly anyone else's planes so you don't really have to worry about that it happens sometimes but it does have custom call outs and all that kind of stuff too right yes yes i like the screen up high yeah like that that's kind of cool and the dimming function is pretty sweet too i'm a little worried about glare bouncing back in my eyes because
[00:21:18] I sit and fly i don't hold it yeah yeah so i'm a little worried about that i might have to get a cloth or something that i could velcro across it or something or get maybe you can find one of
[00:21:27] Those matte i think they call them matte screen protectors where they just they don't reflect
[00:21:31] Yeah i think you'll be okay because if worse comes worse you can always just adjust your hands yeah i can try to five degrees a little bit that's all it's going to take i mean all the buttons are
[00:21:41] Metal there's no plastic buttons i was just going to say the feel of it it feels to me it feels like it's quality it doesn't feel like a toy no it definitely has a good quality feel to it and i noticed after holding my 14 and your 20 ron that i went back and i did something in my shop the other day i was moving my dx8 around and i picked up my dx8 and i was like man this thing
[00:22:03] Feels like a toy now after holding these nice trans yeah the dx9 just is like this thing's so flimsy
[00:22:09] Let's remember they are all toys well that's just saying that's true but you what i'm saying yeah it felt like a not a hobby grade transmitter but yeah it feels good dave i like i'm i'm happy for you and i can't wait for you to fly with somebody else to try to to see how they
[00:22:24] Like to feel to it oh i'll for sure take a take a pull on it take a spin yeah yeah cool so with custom call outs dave did program one for some reason i found it necessary but i was just
[00:22:39] Playing around seeing if i could do it and this is what his left rear oh the volume's turned down on
[00:22:49] Oh where's the oh it's right there okay ron is indeed wow a winner is that what it said ron is a winner no i think the term was weenie
[00:23:03] Oh see it must not be able to read very well because i'm sure it says winner
[00:23:09] Well like i said i'm very excited for dave i know he's been super super stoked about getting this thing and now he's finally got it in his hot little hands and so far judging by the smile on
[00:23:19] His face i'd say he likes it yeah i've gotten really super comfortable with it the first couple of planes were a little struggle bus but six and a half hours what do they call it the
[00:23:29] All the videos on youtube university youtube university without youtube university i'd still be
[00:23:35] Trying to figure out the first plane but yeah my biggest problem on the first airplane reason took six hours as i was trying you're supposed to install the the script into a certain file folder and there was no file folder to put it into it didn't say anywhere that i had to create this file folder once i created the file folder two minutes later everything was up and running
[00:23:54] Dave the reason you had trouble with that is the same reason i would have had trouble with that we're old yeah like the newer generations they would have understood that probably right off the file folder yeah because that's what they are familiar with we just
[00:24:08] We're old yeah all the youtube university just assumed that was already on there
[00:24:13] Yeah so am i supposed to argue like okay okay because i right i feel like i beat you to the
[00:24:19] Punch on that one i wasn't even thinking that oh i've gotten a lot about things and now i've owned some expensive stuff over the years but as far as one time one purchase this is the most expensive one single item i've ever purchased congratulations so welcome to being an adult
[00:24:34] Adult yes awesome if she have cars then yeah yes this coffee is good by the way you should tell crystal i will later tell her all right so what's next dave thanks for bringing that in i'm glad i got to take away i can't i seriously can't wait to you fly with it yeah yeah i'm still itching to do it it's like let's let's get some weather yeah good luck with that yeah it's supposed to rain and blow for the next i mean it's spring in illinois we go through this every spring doesn't make it any easier it's
[00:25:07] Not windy it's raining if it's not raining or windy it's it's freezing whatever you just never know what you're gonna get here yep but you guys were able to find a nice day to fly we did nice segue well done he bought a segue so we did ron and i took last weekend which doesn't mean much to our listeners took some time but recently yeah we went and did a day's worth of maidens went to our
[00:25:38] Favorite field eli i'm speaking for ron but it's my favorite field which is in monticello i'm assuming it's your favorite field also yes should i not assume i mean no that's fine but i
[00:25:50] That made no sense the way you said that but okay well i said our favorite and then i said well i
[00:25:56] Shouldn't speak for ron because i don't know if that's indeed your favorite so i shouldn't speak for you that's what i was trying to say it is how's that sound okay okay but yeah nine made not successful nine maidens in one day that beats our previous day's worth of maidens by two see i'm
[00:26:15] Glad you remembered that because i could not remember i mean i remember i just went back on our facebook page oh because we posted last time okay that it was i guess i should have done that too to figure out what those seven were because i saw you posted that seven was the last one i was
[00:26:28] Like what do we made in seven yeah just go back to i figured when it was last year sometime but yeah
[00:26:34] Nine successful maidens so you want me to start then since i'll be quicker you have your okay sure other things that you're more excited about and you'll be able to spin a yarn you'll tell a tale you'll let us know how everything went so i took four airplanes the freewing f-35 that i just picked up in toledo was top of the list then i was also on the way out looking around here for planes that i had that hadn't flown yet because which there's a bunch that's not a bunch there's a several but
[00:27:11] As i was looking around i saw that i saw the fms f-18 that i got last year that i hadn't flown and the small goldberg chipmunk that we both bought chipmunks you assembled yours you flew yours you sold yours
[00:27:28] Mine has sat since like a year since you've sold yours but it was all put together we we did it at the same time i think right yeah anyway so i ended up throwing that in the car too and then i had the the new hanger nine cub that i had to get a maiden on so because because i needed to get it maiden before we went to joe and all pictures anyway so f-35 i think was the first one i did
[00:27:59] No no f-22 was the first one i did so that was low on my list of being worried about right is that how i went let's just say the timeline doesn't matter because i can't remember what was first so f-13 or f-18 was one that i didn't mind not liking or crashing hold on back up i said f-22 you didn't
[00:28:20] Take it that's the f-22 i'm sorry f-18 is what i'm okay there that's why i was giving you the look because forgive me then i don't remember seeing an f-22 in your pile of airplanes that one all the f-22
[00:28:29] Almost went with me but i had flown it already so the f-18 so the f-18 fms 8 f-18 is the one that i took and that was the first one that i flew because like i said it was hanging downstairs it hangs next to my x-fly f-18 they usually look pretty good together but i didn't mind not re-hanging that one up if something stupid happened does that make sense it does so it took that not being sure how it was gonna fly and i'm very impressed like i didn't want to like that airplane because i kind
[00:29:04] Wanted to get rid of it just there's a few things on it that i'm not too fond of but it flies really
[00:29:09] Well it really does look like it may not look great up close because of the inaccuracies of the yeah of the design but in those intakes yeah but in the air it looks fantastic yeah and it's funny
[00:29:22] The intakes don't bother me as much as the rear the rear stabilizers yeah the stabs are not full flying stabs on the fms they have elevators and it's just like no but in the air it looks fantastic and it flies it's flat good i enjoyed that one a lot i think i got two or three flights on that one that day then the other one i think my next one was the f-35 yes yeah which also
[00:29:52] Flew very nicely yeah once i got the rates turned down and got it dialed in it flew much much better one of the things that i don't like about the f-18 there's no rudders the f-35 being the little bit bigger 70 millimeter fan has rudders and has everything on it that you would want rudder yeah retractable gear and stuff so it no no flaps okay so i got a couple flights on
[00:30:22] That that's a good one too the first landing was a little bit iffy because i i tried to use the rudder which apparently i had set up too high and as soon as i hit it oh yeah yeah i remember now it like went off to the side and almost stalled and it was not very pretty but i got it down no
[00:30:40] Harm no foul yeah it was so startling that i even asked you i think was that you yeah because it looked like a like an old school 72 megahertz radio hit is what i'm saying get hard glitch with it nope it was
[00:30:51] All me it was it was the rudder was set up at too high of a rate and not enough expo got all that dialed in though like i said the other flight or two i don't remember how many i had on it i think landing was landing was very good yeah and it's a fun plane to fly for four minutes it looks good in the sky too yeah i think the next one i flew was the goldberg chipmunk i think that one was the one i was most nervous about because you did not like yours you didn't like the way yours flew so much
[00:31:27] That you got rid of it after you flew it a couple times and so i had that in the back of my mind that this is not going to be a good flying airplane but apparently there was something different between the version one i guess is what you had and i had the updated version two or whatever however that worked because there were some differences in ours yeah yeah construction
[00:31:45] Wise yeah mine was still brushless powered but it was a gearbox arrangement yours is direct drive and i believe there was some small differences like the way the airframe was put together too like you had more room to get a battery in and out mine you had to finagle yeah exactly so yeah my hatch
[00:32:02] Came off differently than yours i think you actually had a latch yes i didn't have a latch on mine it was pretty sure it was all magnetized on i don't remember anymore but anyway so i was a little bit more concerned about that one no problems whatsoever i mean that thing flew slow that thing flew well even with a little bit of crosswind so that's one that will definitely be staying because it's easy to store it's small flies good looks good i enjoyed that one it does yours looks look it flies way better than
[00:32:35] Mine did yeah and i don't know i mean i'm sure i probably could have gotten mine to that point you
[00:32:40] Know with tinkering and stuff but yeah well if you have the issues where you can't get a battery in easily you can't right there's just some things on an airplane that's kind of a deal breaker yeah and not worth keeping when they update an airplane there's a reason exactly yeah right there's and mine was
[00:32:55] Noisy like mine i mean it's probably the gearbox yeah it was for sure the gearbox but when you when you would pull the throttle back just like the i don't know dave if you remember the f15s you built for us remember those were gearboxes and when you would pull the throttle back they would make that weird kind of chattery wine noise and it was just it was just really annoying plus yeah that that along with the the pain of getting the battery in and out of the front of it was enough for me to to move on yeah i understand yeah i mean it's a very pretty airplane yeah both of them
[00:33:28] So anyway sorry no i'm glad i'm glad i finally got around to flying that so so you're going to keep
[00:33:32] That one now it's not an unknown yeah i don't have any reason because i would like to fly yours just to compare i offered i know but i didn't it was a maiden well there was a fully charged battery
[00:33:43] Afterwards i thought i offered you but maybe i didn't maybe i thought about it and something else happened and i forgot to it doesn't matter there will be other days trust me and then the last one i i made in that day was the hangar nine cub that i wish we had video of that oh god that why did
[00:33:58] I why did it not even occur to me like i was standing right next to you like why did i not why because it's a cub because i wasn't expecting it to be a non-issue
[00:34:09] Exactly but it almost it was very exciting it was i can't i can't believe how many things actually went through my mind in the amount of time what it could have been more than one or two seconds two seconds maybe right so there was a bit of a crosswind there was apparently a decent crosswind it was a significant crosswind and as soon on the maiden as soon as it broke ground one of the wings tipped i don't remember you might have to walk me through some of this because it all happened so fast
[00:34:41] Dropped the right wing okay we're taking off from left to right in front of us and the wind was pretty much right in our faces right right across the runway and as soon as the gear came off the ground it dropped the right wing and headed for the bushes well it turned like i mean it made a 90 degree turn away from us so it was going after it dropped the right wing first headed for the bushes you corrected with the rudder snap rolled it essentially because we had too much rudder dropped the left wing and that's when it turned and it's still over like the middle of the runway and now it's turning
[00:35:14] 90 degrees like to the runway going away from us and you chop the throttle i'm like no no you got it go
[00:35:21] Go go well and so in my mind the way it happened like i saw that it kind of leveled out and so i'm just going to land it back down and and be okay it was not it had no forward airspeed well that's why i was going to land the score is stall no but i'm saying before it did its turn to the left so my brain was a little bit behind when i cut the throttle because as soon as it kind of started to fluctuate back and forth i figured cut the throttle land then my mind went eight different places and then as soon as i saw it with no throttle three feet in the air maybe yes facing sideways and i still think it was going
[00:35:58] Away from us not actually flying forward it was like flying sideways because of momentum it had no forward momentum i just throttled out of it and luckily that's a cub that's 82 and a half inch wingspan or whatever with a 6s 5000 battery in it right it had the horsepower to pull itself out it has yeah yes plenty of horsepower so after but it was very very exciting after i about shit my pants that was can't say that crap myself whatever sorry after that happened everything else is actually
[00:36:32] Pretty good it's it's a cub it's a cub my next takeoff beautiful was perfect so even the landing
[00:36:38] Was good yeah like that landing after that horrific takeoff was fine i think i'm glad there's no video
[00:36:45] Because oh my gosh i like i for setting purposes yes it would have been nice but yeah yeah i think you get in your head that it's just a cub it flies easy it flies all that kind of stuff i'm sure that's
[00:36:56] Why i didn't whip out my phone yeah because i've recorded the first takeoff of vrf35 35 you did yeah which you were you were saddened by because it was a non-event yeah it was it was it was not nearly
[00:37:07] As exciting as the cub but i'm sitting there's a recurring theme over this weekend with ron and
[00:37:12] Rudders yeah using them using them too much or like having them having them set up a little bit too much yeah and then the f-18 without a rudder right that was yeah that was painful yeah and yeah i was
[00:37:28] Watching i think yeah you were flying the f-18 i was watching you fly it and i i saw you which is a testament to you you're learning you're feeding in rudder with with your turns and coordinating them now although there's just no rudder on there it doesn't do anything even though you were feeding
[00:37:44] It in we all do that i know i'm over here trying to bend my left stick over and nothing's happening
[00:37:49] Because there's no rudder yeah well that was i forgot one of the landings with the f-18 i ended up about five feet farther over than i was planning on being because i had no rudder to correct it right and that was another one of those last minute do i throttle up and try and not land in the tall grass or just it's not going to get hurt yeah let it flop so instead of landing in the short grass i just had no way of correcting it bringing it out because it was about to touch down and so i didn't want to get the the wings off level and lose lift and all that kind of stuff going slow so i was
[00:38:21] Like it'll be all right sure enough it was yep yep just plopped right in yeah so it was a fun day
[00:38:26] Though for me we got a lot of maidens on my airplanes in yeah lots of successful day lots but at least
[00:38:32] Elevated heart rate on one of them a cub of all aircraft cub of all who just thunk it and so what what did we determine was the the factor in that ugly takeoff was the crosswind combined with
[00:38:46] The rudder and the over correction problem or probably also yeah so i turned the throws down on the rudder which i think i'm going to turn it back up okay and then probably add a lot of expo because like you need full rudder deflection for taxing yeah like i cannot make a 180 degree turn yep from one side of the runway to the other on low rates and that's a good size runway too you should
[00:39:12] Be able to 50 feet wide yeah so so yeah just add a lot of expo yeah that's my takeaway that was my day
[00:39:21] Nice four successful maidens and now you and i had five so i took i took five airplanes with me that day so i'm just going to preface this by saying i was not planning honest to goodness i was not planning on maintaining the the ranger i really wasn't the lie detector test determined that was a lie no that's not a lie you can even ask lori based on the text i received beforehand so the text so i did some research on the ama website and i you can in fact fly a turbine powered airplane good job
[00:39:58] Without a waiver and you can do this by having a licensed or a wavered turbine pilot on a buddy box with you yeah so i texted you the night before a couple nights before i was like hey by the way i don't know if this or not but according to the ama i could fly my jet if somebody that's wavered can do the buddy box with me and you were like yeah yeah that's seems seems accurate or whatever and didn't you probably didn't think another thing about it no i so in my mind i i
[00:40:32] Saw that and i was like yeah i know that's true because that's how i was flying before i had my waiver with people to learn how to do it right there's no difference in that i'm just in the different position even though right not really experienced and so like i said i knew that and as soon as i saw that i was like i know his plans for tomorrow so i don't normally beat around the bush
[00:40:55] Like i'm i usually am to the point and if i wanted you to get on the buddy box with me so that i could fly my jet i would have come right out and asked you hey would you mind doing this i never did that i never came right out and asked you if you would do it i know so it was not my plan my plan was i knew you were going to be at the field and i wanted to get i had not run it yet like i hadn't even fueled it yet before i got to the field so my in my head i took the jet because i wanted to do its first run and i knew you would be there to record it because i've said
[00:41:30] From day one the first run i want someone to record it so that we can put it on the our facebook page or on our web page or whatever so that's why that's why i loaded the jet in the car that's why i put fuel in the jug that's that was my that was all i was expecting was just to run it and for someone you to record it so that we could put it out there okay having said that got to the field five five new airplanes i think dave was sleeping oh yeah he opened his eyes i put dave to sleep i'm
[00:42:06] Not sure how i feel about that that's kind of hurt it hurts a little bit but that's okay so the five airplanes i took i bought the the umx timber x at the toledo took that to fly i took that su27 jet that we picked up or that i picked up in milwaukee milwaukee the cap that i i forgot to mention this in the last episode but i bought that samson rc hobby shop cap 231 in the splat scheme
[00:42:41] I thought you said something about that i i think i totally yeah you guys skipped it daniel daniel bought the big stick from them as well yeah at any rate have that assembled and ready to fly i said welcome back dave and then i took the terry dunkel to fly and then obviously i took the jet to run so yeah i started with the umx timber x i mean can you really call that a maiden they fly
[00:43:09] Out of the box like if you do the binding all technicalities yes only because of technicality
[00:43:15] Right and of course it flew great lucky expected it to fly yeah yeah it was a good flying it's got big big for a umx it has huge control surfaces yeah yeah it's like super super agile i guess would be the word so that's going to be a lot of fun when i put the floats on it when we take it to what did you call it home all that flow paul paul paul so that was a non-event the su 27 was up next loaded up the 4s 2200 i think in that one and flew it off the wheels first just because
[00:43:51] It's a maiden even though i've got the the 631 as3x plus with the hand launch and all that kind of stuff flew it off the wheels another non-event flies flies fine the wheels really well we'll talk about that they're noisy aren't they they're noisy yeah terrible it's like they're hard plastic and like when you land it sounds like you're crashing it sounds like a kid in a power wheel yeah yeah and the next airplane the cap same oh yeah that one's even worse yeah like it it's almost like
[00:44:24] A drum where it just reverberates inside right it's terrible so i'm gonna replace it built up
[00:44:29] Yeah i'm gonna replace the wheels on the cab with some dubro ones which i think will help that and it's mostly the tail wheel on that airplane it's it's like plastic it's not even like a rubbery yeah it's just hard plastic so but anyway they flew the cap after the su 27 it flies really really nice i've got some figuring out to do i don't think the cg is located accurately in the manual because it flies to me it flies tail heavy like it ratchets and when i say ratchets i mean when you pull back
[00:45:03] The elevator it kind of does this weird stall thing and then recovers and then stalls and then and the faster the airplane is going the faster the ratchets are yeah so i think it's a little tail you're stalling the tail but i never actually performed the inverted 45 degree hands-off test i'm going to do that on the next flight but i have a feeling that it's it's tail heavy which is disappointing to me because the thing is already eight pounds and i wanted it to be around seven and a half so if i have to add nose weight that's going to make me even more disappointed
[00:45:34] Yeah but i may there there may be something there that can save me because the radio tray has two holes in it for the servos the servos are mounted in the tail but there is provisions it looks like in the airframe you can move them that'll make a huge difference yeah so pending the outcome of my cg test flight i may move those around but otherwise keep the throws down and keep the maneuvers kind of to a minimum it flew great plenty of power like it has plenty oh power that's kind of one of those innovative i mean this is the name of the
[00:46:11] Company a badass motor the b4520 dash innovative designs yeah plenty of power no shortage of power so i'm happy with that power combo with my avian the 130 amp speed control nice yep so yeah no crash there took the terry dunkel up next man what a nice flying airplane terry if you're listening you nailed it like and you're right like keep it light okay i can imagine had i tried to fly
[00:46:45] My terry dunkel at three pounds probably wouldn't be nearly as well we probably wouldn't be having
[00:46:50] This conversation no it would have been seven maidens or eight maidens and a crash yeah but no what a
[00:46:58] What a nice flying airplane it really i mean i'm thinking you should probably market these terry if you're listening and then last was the was the jet the the unexpected maiden so we got to the field and like i'm bringing the jet out and i'm not sure i got there just a little bit before you did so i may have still been assembling it i think when you got there and then as most jets do when you're putting them together people come over and see what you're up to and see what you got
[00:47:29] Or whatever and miguel alvarez was there from horizon he's a very experienced i would consider a very experienced jet pilot he's like hey you got two licensed wavered turbine pilots here do you want to do you want to fly it and of course i said yeah well yeah i sure do i mean i was gonna just run it but yeah i mean if i can run it and fly it why not so miguel was nice enough to jump on the body box with me and let me do the maiden he did help me out with the trim which i greatly
[00:48:00] Appreciate but it was it was really kind of a i mean as far as jets go i would consider that a non-event it flew it flew great flew the way it was supposed to yeah i thought i would be more nervous honestly like i really did like i was telling laurie i thought i would have the shakes and just be super super nervous but i wasn't it's really really odd like i was more
[00:48:24] Nervous flying the cap than i was the jet which is odd that is weird so for me like when i did the maiden solo and all that stuff on mine i was very nervous because i knew i'm not replacing that i have no plans on buying another jet at this time you do so that's the difference well but you've got
[00:48:41] Another one in the pipeline but i mean just an airframe like it didn't you get the cost of another turbine provided the one that crashes doesn't make it through the crash i get it so i mean it would be time and lots of more cash to so i mean that thought did occur to me i mean this is a lot of money rolling down the runway but i was never i'd never had the like i never i wasn't as nervous as i was expecting to be yeah probably because i had the reassurance
[00:49:18] That had an experienced pilot oh yeah just a button release away from getting me out of trouble so at any rate yeah five successful maidens well four plus an unexpected one we'll call it that but it was five successful maidens yeah no that's good everything went well i'm i'm happy yeah we unfortunately we ran out of time and daylight and it was starting to get pretty windy there towards the end of the day yeah that was so we decided not to push our luck with trying to do the
[00:49:48] The waiver flights which i'm totally fine with yeah i think you're you're in good shape though i
[00:49:53] Mean you've had a lot of time on edf's you've had a lot of time on high performance type airplanes you just have a few things you have to get into your head that's different with the turbine and after that you'll be fine yeah don't let it get too slow don't like it too slow more
[00:50:07] Importantly turn off the fuel tank oh right yeah turn the turn the fuel off before you're trying to refuel it or or do anything unless it's running and don't forget to turn it back on when you're
[00:50:16] Trying to start it i'm not gonna say i haven't done that yeah because yeah i had the same thing
[00:50:21] It's like why is it not starting and then oh yeah they're like did you turn it on no sure didn't ah crap but what a lot of fun yeah that was a fun day and the jet fly is great yeah i'm sorry you
[00:50:35] Won't have your your turbine waiver before joe and all but it's okay yeah i'm not something to look forward to when we come back exactly yeah and i got all summer so yeah it'll happen very
[00:50:48] Quickly it's been flown pressures off yeah exactly i know it flies i know it flies good and man i mean if i if i could say it i nailed the landing like the landing was i wish you could well you can see it we got video of it yeah i did i nailed the lane sorry i missed it guys but breezed it right
[00:51:07] In it was i mean it wasn't on the center line or anything but it was cool oh of course had a crosswind
[00:51:13] So i was compensating you did a good job you really did i mean it's yeah i was flying from ear to ear at the at the end of that so and i did i told i think i told you i figured out the brake issue yeah you had settings right on the radio yeah easy fix yeah so i'm looking forward to flying it again when we get back from null nice but from here to joe no we've got work to do yeah we're going to start
[00:51:43] On that right after this as a matter of fact we got some trailer work to finish up to to make the
[00:51:50] Inaugural journey with the trailer to joe and all that'll be the first time it's had airplanes in it for hauling and all that kind of stuff it's gonna be nice the trailer's gonna be sick when it's done we ended up taking so far we've taken all the plywood out of the inside we have insulated the whole thing ceiling walls did the electrical for the lights on the ceiling did the electrical for the lights on the outside and that's about it right now so our next step is to put the actual
[00:52:20] Walls up which will be here in hopefully a few minutes and we'll go from there yeah you can put
[00:52:28] An awning on it i was thinking i mean maybe eventually but not right now yeah i was i forget when it wasn't yesterday but one of these days recently i was thinking man it might not be a bad idea to put it up the problem with putting an awning on those trailers is the door goes all the way to the top so when the door is open and if the awning's down the corner of the door they put a roller on top of the door yeah but then that's still something contacting the awning which provides a place for it to see yeah get worn out and stuff and yeah and that too so but anyway either that or an easy up next to it would be just as easy well just so happens i know somebody has a really good
[00:53:02] Looking easy up who i've seen yours no i would i would buy my own i know i have another one too that's basic thing that's a better one actually we so we would actually be a lot farther along on the work that we did yesterday had it not been for my cheapness and i i do actually regret it so long
[00:53:26] Story short but now that it's done do you though i mean yeah because we've been so much farther along yeah but you saved yourself a a fair amount of cash by doing it the way we did
[00:53:35] Did but i mean time has to be worth something but we're not so far behind that's true i guess but long story short i had a pallets of foam that i had gotten to insulate my shop i have since decided for insulation on my on the shop ceiling that i'm just gonna actually buy house insulation so i don't need this foam anymore and like i said there's some that are inch and a half tall there's some that are four inch thick foam two foot by four foot pieces and so i decided just to just a hot
[00:54:08] Wire the thickness of these down it worked but there was a lot of downtime while you're waiting for it to cut yeah but luckily there were two of us working yeah i mean we we did a lot yesterday yeah so you came out but you were supposed to be out at seven yes in the morning yes and so i know you like to get places early so i was actually out in the shop at six well i wasn't planning on being here that early well i know but i still wanted to at least get some things organized and ready so we
[00:54:44] Could actually get to work and i didn't come in last night till a little bit after seven so with the exception of 20 minutes for lunch and 20 minutes for dinner yeah so you were it was a 13 hour day
[00:54:55] Yeah yeah yeah long long less for me it was more like 10 for me because that's a lot because i had to go home and get lunch and take care of poppy and all that kind of stuff yeah yeah it was a good it
[00:55:06] Was a productive day i will i think i will be excited to get this done and loaded and go oh the other thing completely forgot i ordered the new battery for my golf cart that will be here tuesday so i went with a lithium ion 36 volt or lithium whatever they're called lithium ish life po4 whatever that one is i think is what it was so that'll be here tuesday it's a single 36 volt battery with charger
[00:55:34] Yeah with charger with the voltage regulator so i still have headlights and all that stuff take it down to 12 volts there's something else in there oh it comes with a handy little fuel gauge that you can mount on the nice on the dash that'll actually be really handy even more handy which is maybe this is stupid i don't know but i think it's kind of cool has its own app so you can actually look in there to see what charge it's at how long if you're charging it how long
[00:56:02] It's going to take to charge of course it has an app and all that kind of stuff yeah excited about it
[00:56:06] That's kind of neat so it's only supposed to take like five hours to charge from dead oh so i don't think that's bad yeah that's considering i think was it the year before last yeah the first year we took the golf cart down and it had brand new batteries we put it on charge one night and it was like i want to say it was 11 or 12 hours later it still wasn't yeah fully charged yeah it took a while
[00:56:30] Yeah so i'll be getting rid of those batteries they'll be gone no more be gone with you no more lead acid battery weight and all that kind of stuff so we'll oh yeah this battery will be lighter too so
[00:56:41] That'll make it even more efficient so good all around so and this should last a lot longer than
[00:56:47] Two years because buying batteries every two years is kind of sad yeah that it hurts well granted though the batteries that are in it are still good enough for around here but they are not going to last long enough for the day's use we need it joe no yeah i said it again but anyway it made a lot of trips too
[00:57:06] Yeah like we yeah we put a lot of miles yeah i think we figured it was like 35 ish a day i think it was something like that yeah which is surprising but yeah you do a lot by the well where we were
[00:57:17] Camped that first year and it wasn't nearly as long last year that's true because of where we were we were camped out but being all the way down by the 3d line and having to go all the way down past the 3d line around the end of the runway and then another mile up or so to get to the the lines we were at and stuff yeah it adds up quick a lot of time too wasted just sitting on the golf cart going back and forth so yeah yeah cool that'll be good so yeah we're gonna finish up some more on that and yeah i think after tonight you'll be in a pretty good pretty after tonight i hope
[00:57:49] To be in a spot where i can do everything else myself and if not i mean an evening here or there i can probably yeah next weekend like i said i'm out next weekend i hope to be finishing
[00:58:00] Touches on my own with it but we'll see cool right on yeah so there you go there's an episode anything
[00:58:06] Else we good dave you wait dave you want something to drink eat i don't know some caffeine dave yeah
[00:58:13] I've been drinking okay is that alcohol or one leg and alcohol don't mix all this you fall
[00:58:20] Enough as it is i can see that yeah anyway i haven't had a drink since 2007. nice so anything
[00:58:29] Else we're gonna talk about alcohol now no i'm good okay i think we i think that pretty much
[00:58:35] Covers it well everybody thanks for listening until next time i'm ron i'm tom and i'm dave good night
