We’re recording earlier, because I’ve got a ton of stuff coming up, and I think I meant to say something before we recorded, but I think we’re probably going to skip the next episode, perhaps. Unless something major comes up we can talk about.

[00:05:46] We thought it was going to be several months. Yeah. And. Crazy how quickly that turned. 24 hours we went from we’re doing okay to here we are. This is, yeah, not good. So love those closest to you as much as you can. Yeah, for sure.

[00:06:03] Because you just don’t know. You never know. Yep. And how quickly it can turn, so. Right. Yeah. But anyway, I’m super happy you decided to come out anyway, because you needed it. Yeah, I do. And I wanted to see you anyway, so.

[00:06:24] I put my armor back on, and we’re okay. And me, maybe remotely. I mean, you never know. Hopefully it’ll cool off a little bit where I’m staying, and I can do some flying and stuff and have something to contribute. I’m going to have a little pressure off myself.

[00:06:54] So, by the way, I was looking at my calendar, because I have a couple things on here that I want to talk about coming up. So, not all RC stuff, but my weekends are booked with things until you might be home. Okay. Like, it’s kind of upsetting. Why? Because I don’t have a weekend free to do other things. Yeah, but you’re doing awesome stuff with your kids. Well, I agree. With Piper.

[00:07:20] But still, it’s one of those, like, oh, there’s not a weekend off for this whole six, seven, eight weeks thing. But it’ll be okay.

[00:07:28] But yeah, you’ll look back on it, and you’ll be happy you did it. Absolutely. Because you’ll remember the stuff you do with Piper way more than you remember hanging out with two doofuses at an RC event. Yeah. I get it. Two curmudgeons. Curmudgeons. There you go. I’m a curmudgeon.

[00:07:51] So do you want to talk about our trip today, or do you want to talk about something else? Or do you want to talk about the new thing from….

[00:07:56] Let’s start with, I made it to the Illini Jets jet meet. Only made it for a day.

[00:08:03] Another event. I’m sorry I missed.

[00:08:06] Yeah. Actually, I think next year I’ll sign up to fly if you’re coming with me. so, I’m going to be honest, it was very, it was bigger this year. Like, I think there was another 15 pilots this year than last year. Last year had some, I don’t want to say main players, but some normal guys that show up for it, weren’t able to show up. It was in, at the same time with something else, I think, going on. So. Wasn’t there something in St. Louis or something last year?

[00:08:37] I’d say I don’t remember. That’s why I….

[00:08:38] Did it overlap with Kentucky Jets, maybe? I don’t remember.

[00:08:42] I don’t think so. Anyway.

[00:08:44] But, yeah, it doesn’t matter.

[00:08:46] There were a lot more people this year. I think we had right around 50 pilots registered. That’s awesome. very busy flight line. One day I made it. but I’m going to say, we’ve been to a lot of fly-ins. I would say. This one, I, the, the caliber of food was provided.

[00:09:10] Did you see the menu they posted? Like, crazy. Unfortunately, I’ve been kind of busy and I didn’t catch any of it. Right. Well, I mean, I’m just, like, talking about the stuff that, like, flowed across my Facebook page, whatever.

[00:09:22] Yeah.

[00:09:22] Crazy menus. Not burgers and dogs, huh? No.

[00:09:26] Okay. Well, so I, I, I wrote down the menu and I wanted to, to talk about that. So, yes, Wednesday was burger, brat, potato salad, and chips for lunch. Dinner was chicken fried rice with shrimp. Shrimp?

[00:09:40] Shrimp. Had a fly-in. Chicken fried rice?

[00:09:45] L72, pork fried rice. Sorry. So, oh, I gotta behave. So, Thursday was a pulled pork sandwich with chips for lunch. Dinner was skirt steak, pasta salad, and green beans.

[00:09:59] Skirt steak?

[00:10:01] Friday. Lunch was spare ribs, corn on the cob, and a roll. Friday, the dinner that I got to enjoy. Tomahawk steaks with chimichurri. Tomahawk steaks? Caesar salad and risotto. Oh, my goodness. And it was delicious. I’m sure. Not gonna lie.

[00:10:21] Well, Steve does a really, really good job.

[00:10:23] He does. Saturday, for lunch was pulled pork tacos and Mexican street corn. And dinner was brisket, mac and cheese, cowboy beans, corn muffin, and a dessert. The Saturday dinner was also the awards banquet and all that kind of stuff. All I can say is, if anybody knows Stephen Petrato, he’s the one that does all the cooking for these events. He has a big smoker, trailer-sized smoker that just, I don’t think, got shut off at all for those four days.

[00:10:58] I was talking to him when he was working on the tomahawk steaks and stuff, and I asked him, how long? Because, okay, so I’ve smoked stuff before. I have a pellet smoker. You and I, Tommy, both have, I guess, the cheating versions that you set the temperature and then it feeds the pellets in when it needs to. And you set it and kind of walk away and you don’t have to worry about it. You can go overnight, wake up in the morning, and you’re fine.

[00:11:22] I asked him when, like, how often does he have to check stuff? And he said, if he gets all of the, because this is wood burning. Right. If he gets all the wood set up right and, perfectly pyramided or however he does it in there, he can leave it alone for 30 to 40 minutes.

[00:11:39] Oh, my gosh. That is so much work.

[00:11:43] So.

[00:11:43] But you can tell.

[00:11:45] Oh, absolutely. I mean, like. There is a lot that, like, he, I cannot believe or imagine how much work he puts into that. It’s amazing.

[00:11:56] You can tell he really enjoys it because the food that he prepares is amazing.

[00:12:00] Well, it’s funny because, so, he obviously works for Horizon and that’s his life. And for us, we all have our own jobs. We have stuff we do. And RC airplanes are our hobby. Right. That is what we do in our downtime. Right. Now, for him, RC airplanes. This is his job. Is his life at work. Right. So, in his downtime, it’s all smoking meats and cooking.

[00:12:26] I think that’s, like, the name of his. Yeah, his YouTube channel and stuff.

[00:12:29] Yeah.

[00:12:30] Smoking meats.

[00:12:30] So, I mean, that’s good for us. Yeah.

[00:12:35] Yeah. I’m glad he does that. And, like I said, you can tell that he enjoys doing it because the food is that he prepares is. Yeah. Always. Restaurant or better quality. I mean, it’s really good.

[00:12:48] And I’m sorry I missed it this year.

[00:12:50] No, it is next year.

[00:12:51] But there were some big, I did see on Facebook, there were some, what did you call them? Big league, not big league, main players. What did you call them?

[00:12:59] I don’t remember what I said now, to be honest.

[00:13:01] But, Pablo was there from EA Motors. EA Motors. Elite Aerosports. -huh. I think it was.

[00:13:09] He had the BDXL there. Isn’t that thing cool? And he had the, what is it, a two meter razor now or something? Yeah. Yeah.

[00:13:17] Yeah, he’s got the small razor. Did he have the Firebird there? Do you recall?

[00:13:21] I don’t remember seeing it, but. Oh, that is such a sweet looking airplane. It’s, it’s overload. I mean. Well, right. With the small amount of time I was able to stay there and do stuff, it was sensory overload with stuff.

[00:13:32] But yeah. So, looked like a, looked like a good turnout. I loved all the pictures that, that Miguel posted and other folks I saw.

[00:13:39] That other people posted. I didn’t even think to really take any pictures, which, that’s.

[00:13:44] I mean, you’re only there for a day, so.

[00:13:46] A lot of cool jets, though. So, there was, and I, I really should have gotten more information on it, because I can’t talk to exactly what it was, but there was a huge F-14. Two turbines, retractable wings, obviously. And that was probably my favorite one of the whole, the whole gambit. And it was a big one, too. It was huge. Yeah. I mean, wings out, it was a well over 10 foot wingspan.

[00:14:09] Yeah. I thought I saw that John from lighter side was going to be there. Was he there? Did you see him by chance?

[00:14:16] Not when I would have been there, no. Oh, okay. Not that I saw, at least.

[00:14:21] Like I said, I was there for probably a whopping six hours.

[00:14:23] Oh.

[00:14:24] If that.

[00:14:25] But it would have been neat to meet him.

[00:14:27] I did, my sister and her husband came with, that was their first time actually going to anything like that, so.

[00:14:43] And then, of course, I remember the first time I saw a turbine. I was like: is that, is that? Does that really? That’s what I’m? I’m sure somebody who’s never really been exposed to model air things very much would have totally been wowed.

[00:14:59] And then there was a lot of, well, how much is that one? Oh, you don’t, you don’t want to know. You don’t really need to ask. Yeah. Remember when you bought your car and thought that was expensive? Who wasn’t? I mean, go figure.

[00:15:11] It’s a nice down payment.

[00:15:12] Yeah, exactly. So, yeah, it looked like they had good weather, too.

[00:15:16] Yeah. It was, it was very nice. Not a lot of wind, but the wind that was there was directly down the runway. Perfect.

[00:15:22] So, yeah, it was a good night for them. Cool. But, yeah. Sorry I missed it.

[00:16:34] We are looking at the Skynetic F-35C Lightning II Micro 30mm EDF jet with gyro from Motion RC. Yeah, $190. And it comes with a battery, and I think it comes with a…

[00:16:49] No, that’s an additional. For $190, it doesn’t.

[00:16:52] Okay, so maybe it’s the ready-to-fly version that came with that. Anyway, $189. It comes with a gyro three switch. It’s basically a UMX.

[00:17:03] I would absolutely call it a UMX.

[00:17:05] I would call it, yeah, UMX. Especially looking at it in the guy’s hand, that’s definitely UMX-ish. So, like I said, it…

[00:17:13] I’m going to sound bad on this one. I’m going to take the Dave route and be negative. Whoa! I know. It’s rubbing off. But to me, it looks like a Timu version of an RC airplane you would see at a reputable hobby shop.

[00:17:26] The molding is horrendous.

[00:17:29] It’s… I’m going to go out, and I’m going to say it’s not pretty. I mean, I like F-35s. I don’t have anything against them. And me, being… Well, obviously, we’re all airplane guys, but, like, I’m not, like, a huge F-35 fan, like, just in general. And this one, it doesn’t make me like them more. If that makes sense. Okay, yeah. It’s got this weird bump underneath. It looks like a hernia. Yeah, I don’t understand what…

[00:17:57] I mean, I suppose that’s there maybe to house the EDF, maybe? Yeah, I’m sure it has something to do with the motor and EDF.

[00:18:02] Air movement, yeah, maybe.

[00:18:04] The panel lines are basically Grand Canyon deep trenches. Well, and the…

[00:18:09] Yeah, if you scale that up, they’d be, like, six inches wide.

[00:18:11] Yeah. And if you look closely at some of the photos on the Motion RC website of this thing, like, it doesn’t look to me like the two pieces of… It looks like two pieces of foam kind of together for the fuselage. They don’t mate well. They don’t line up well. Yeah, so…

[00:18:30] The only thing I can think of is possibly. Possibly that’s not the production version. That was a sample that was sent in.

[00:18:37] I mean, that… But then why would you use something that looks that horrible as your….

[00:18:41] Because you had them early enough.

[00:18:43] I mean, because maybe that’s all they had. On the plus side, it looks like it flies really nice.

[00:18:49] I have not seen any fly.

[00:18:50] I have not seen the videos yet. But, like, it’s hard to want to go look at the videos after looking at the photos.

[00:18:56] And here’s the real killer. It’s got a painted canopy. Yeah, come on, guys. I know.

[00:19:01] That’s Dave’s thing. You couldn’t put a clear canopy on that easily.

[00:19:03] And then the battery bay is behind the canopy. So there’s no reason that that canopy can’t be clear.

[00:19:09] Canopy can’t be.

[00:19:11] Yeah, like… Yeah. But to be fair…

[00:19:14] To be fair. To be fair. I don’t even remember how to do that anymore.

[00:19:17] It is… It’s a small airplane. So, you would get lost in the details if you tried to make everything scale. Right.

[00:19:25] So they just need to leave it off.

[00:19:27] I mean, I’ll, I’ll give them a pass on some of the, like, the panel lines and stuff like that. They’re trying to make it look cool, look like an airplane. Got it. But, man, the fit of the two airframe components, for lack of a better word, is awful.

[00:19:44] If I run across wanting to swap me for 50 bucks, I’m snagging it.

[00:19:48] Yeah.

[00:19:49] But….

[00:19:49] I even think that’s overpriced.

[00:19:50] I need to see the video.

[00:19:52] I need to see the video. I’ll be honest. Plus, it does come with, there’s multiple versions you can get, Futaba ready, Spectrum ready, or ready to fly. So that, I understand, that’s going to add some cost. Got it. To that.

[00:20:06] And they all come with a gyro.

[00:20:07] Yeah. So that’s not terrible, I guess.

[00:20:10] No. And it’s an actual EDF, as opposed to the… It puts it right there at the UMX price point, but the UMX stuff looks so much better. Yeah. Yeah.

[00:20:18] The UMX stuff, you can tell they have taken the time to refine the molds and, do the… And those molds are expensive. Oh, I can’t imagine.

[00:20:27] I mean, probably not the one for this airplane. They chiseled it out of, like, cardboard.

[00:20:33] You got a guy with a scriber.

[00:20:34] Yeah. Give me another 2×4. I got to make it fit.

[00:20:38] Yeah. But anyway, it, from, 50 feet away, it looks great.

[00:20:44] Maybe. In theory. In theory.

[00:20:46] But I have not seen the videos. It’s flying. The videos I’ve seen, it looks like it flies really well. It flies high alpha really nice. No wing rock, which I’m sure has a lot to do with the gyro. Absolutely. Oh, yeah. Yeah, for sure. I can’t remember. Does it have flying stabs? Or does it have elevators? I don’t know if they cheated on this one or not. No.

[00:21:04] Looks like flying stabs. Cool.

[00:21:07] I would almost think that would be easier to make, though, to be honest. At that scale, I’m sure, yeah. Single small servo inside.

[00:21:12] So, yeah, I would consider that a plus. Yeah, that’s definitely a plus. Same. So, you can, you can do the, the John from Two Brothers Arthas C thing and make them, if they don’t already do the… Stabilator. Stabilator, whatever.

[00:21:25] It depends how it’s hooked up.

[00:21:27] Sure. Well, they’re separate servos.

They have the try-me’s for everything. Try-me’s for flying. They have a main flight line set up.

[00:27:25] So the flight line is closed for the public. They’ll have flight demonstrations and all that stuff going on, showing off Horizon stuff and others. This, though, is the event that I knew nothing about. I knew nothing about Horizon being so close. I knew nothing about the club or anything like that. We got an email from one of our listeners saying, hey, RC Fest is coming up. Have you guys ever been there? I was like, no. So that was the year.

[01:06:33] Yeah. Reminder to anybody who has airplanes with nylon, especially small airplanes with these really, really tiny nylon clevises and snapper keepers and things like that, check them often. Yeah. Because that nylon does get brittle, especially if you store your airplane in a hot environment. That nylon breaks down. Hot and dry. Hot and dry. Very bad. It breaks down, and then when the pin breaks off of the clevis, you’re done. Yeah. Especially if it’s on the elevator.

[01:07:02] So just a reminder, part of your, maybe at the end of the season or beginning of the season checks, check those things out. And replace them every couple years. Yeah.
