Episode 217: RC Fest, Ring of Fire Redemption, and Piper Takes the Mic

[0:04] Piper: Hello everyone welcome to the rc plane lab podcast i’m piper i’m ron i’m tom and i’m dave

[0:20] Tom: Well what is that buddy it’s the whole game we are all here right now how amazing is it

[0:26] Ron: Plus one plus somebody else hold on just one second i’m trying to check something on here because okay tom you got sounded weird just for a second there oh my apologies

[0:41] Ron: You sound like this my apologies we’re recording right yes piper we are recording so my daughter is here today she is going to talk a little bit about the rc fest event that we uh went to last weekend she was kind of excited about it and she wanted to come on and talk about it and now i’m nervous to hell oh god no stop it we don’t that’s not no we don’t use that language

[1:10] Ron: You can at least edit some we’re not editing anything watch your mouth let’s move on okay everybody hi let’s uh let’s yeah so rc fest rc fest was fun but we’ll get to that in a little bit first off i want to talk about what you tommy and dave right did while i was gone yeah so i got i got

[1:32] Tom: Lucky and i uh i got a week away from here and was able to go home for a visit which was really nice uh and while i was home i you know went to the state fair a couple times saw you at the state fair that was awesome and then i got to fly with dave yay i wasn’t there dave was gracious enough to allow me to fly pretty much every single one of his night flyers which i greatly appreciated and

[1:56] Dave: Really needed to be honest yeah yeah it was really nice to be out there that night weather was good yeah the weather was great company was great yeah what what are you saying there dave ron wasn’t there

[2:09] Ron: That’s hurtful he was saying it without saying it but he did say it oh yes he did so anyway tell me

[2:17] Tom: Would you guys fly what’d you do oh gosh dave let me fly his uh hey i’ve pretty much let me fly everything his ultrix the mctwist the shadow seeker which actually i don’t think i flew the shadow seeker yeah i don’t think he did yeah but uh the uh the piage i got to fly that and man let me tell you i know dave has talked about it before but that little piage is very nice very nice i’m gonna have to like so nice i’m actually thinking about buying one myself eventually yeah i can’t believe

[2:47] Dave: I stumbled into that thing at a swap meet and somebody didn’t want it you know it’s just amazing flying airplane do they still make them yeah oh really still buy them yeah nice and they’re cheap

[2:57] Tom: Yeah yeah uh was it motion rc yeah yeah motion has yeah yeah for like i forget exactly the price but it’s very very reasonable so i’m gonna get one of those and then the other pattern-ish plane

[3:11] Dave: You let me fly dave what was oh that was a yak the yak 55 from um not the ra cores the other one yeah all of a sudden it’s slipping my mind it’s the um

[3:25] Tom: Dancing wing hobby one and thing wings that’s it um also a good flying airplane but i gotta tell

[3:30] Dave: You that piage like night and day difference oh yeah the weight difference um the piage is so light versus the much heavier uh yak pretty sure you could fly that piage in a gym oh yeah we talked about it

[3:45] Tom: While we were flying and like absolutely could fly that in the gym and be aerobatic with it yeah

[3:51] Ron: Exactly uh yak not so much now the that yak is the one that’s got the actual uh the wings are oh my

[4:01] Dave: God my mind went it’s an airfoiled airfoiled wing yeah okay yeah that’s the one i had to change the servers in to make it flyable right because the stock ones were not cutting the job yeah it was me i’m

[4:11] Tom: Sorry but all in all it was a it was a great evening and i thanks again dave for letting me

[4:16] Dave: Fly all of your stuff anytime feels like i’m missing one though uh what else do we have out there we had the piage the yak the uh all tricks mctwist mctwist and then you flew the shadow seeker i’m pretty sure i guess that was it yeah that was it yeah you just didn’t know you uh yeah that’s right you did

[4:37] Tom: The uh remaden of the uh oh gosh dang it not the beaver oh yeah i had the beaver out there and it

[4:44] Dave: Was a beaver okay yeah i did a remaden flight on the beaver so pretty good too with the dave redid

[4:50] Tom: The nat or the uh the beacon and uh actually you know it’d be awesome if you did like a how-to on that we put it on the website or something because that strobe looks really really good

[5:00] Dave: Uh i can do that but there already technically is a how-to on the internet i can find a link for it for everybody to watch the video that i copied but you can just do your own

[5:11] Ron: That way we can all watch dave doing it okay yeah and then watch dave cuss when he makes a mistake and

[5:16] Dave: Burns himself yeah watch me do board work i suck at board work uh yeah so anyway it was a great evening

[5:25] Tom: And like i said i’m really thankful dave for uh you let me fly her stuff because it was you know not not a uh in the cards for me to transport an airplane home just to fly it for a few days all your

[5:35] Dave: Support equipment and exactly yeah yeah i like having somebody else fly my stuff so i actually

[5:40] Ron: Get to watch it i mean yeah it’s a different perspective i was gonna say i hope you watch

[5:45] Dave: It when you’re flying it i was gonna elaborate okay that’s you’re flying it you’re flying it you’re watching it to fly it but you can’t relax and enjoy the sight right you can’t take in the beauty

[5:56] Tom: Of it as much right yeah it’s like a it’s a different perspective too because like when you’re flying it you kind of know what’s coming well i hope you know what’s coming because you’re flying it like if you’re watching somebody else fly you don’t know what’s coming next so they could do something really cool and be like oh i didn’t know my airplane could do that yeah you did some

[6:11] Dave: Really nice rolling circles with the piaget i really like that yeah i gotta get one somebody’s been practicing makes me feel like i suck but yeah i get about halfway around and then things go

[6:21] Tom: Haywire i get upside down and i go oh they weren’t beautiful but that airplane makes it makes it easy

[6:28] Dave: Though oh it does it just you know like i am horrible at hovering but man that airplane will just let you just hang it on this prop with no problems don’t even think about it nice yeah

[6:40] Ron: Big fan i’m a big fan did you have a question piper you said you raised your hand which one was what

[6:49] Piper: Get up i had two questions i don’t know what either of them were one was if you do if you like copy a video and post it on like your own website is that copyright that’s actually a really good question

[7:04] Ron: That is but if you make your own video and it’s all of your own then no it’s not and also

[7:14] Piper: The mind of a nine-year-old yes it’s okay a couple times it sounded like dave’s voice was outside

[7:21] Ron: Yeah it sometimes this kind of changes your your voice and makes it sound a little bit weird because you’re not used to hearing people in headphones when you’re standing right next to

[7:32] Piper: Them um yeah and that’s okay and i’m so scared don’t be scared anyway you you’re you’re doing just

[7:41] Tom: Fine so far we’re gonna talk about your stuff pretty soon and then you won’t be scared at all you’ll just be excited to talk about the stuff you liked and it’s all good your new toys

[7:50] Ron: Oh yep don’t give it away okay we won’t we won’t we won’t so what else that happened

[7:57] Tom: Tommy i guess after you got home oh yeah well home away from home where yeah where i’m where i’m currently at uh yeah so once i got back i bought a trailer of course you did out of all things of all things yeah more of a structure out there than you do here i know yeah so yeah so where i’m at it’s a it’s a larger area uh so there’s more stuff to choose from so facebook marketplace is really kind of the bane of my existence honestly well you’re because i have a lot of time on my hands

[8:28] Ron: I was gonna say you’re bored half the time there’s nothing around to do so you you shop yeah so uh so

[8:35] Tom: Yeah i found a uh it’s a seven by twelve uh with a v nose and i call it a drop v nose because it it goes to a v but it also kind of slopes down at the top if that sort of makes the top yep yeah uh which i like because uh i don’t you know know how well my car is going to haul you know a trailer which actually i know now it hauls it just fine anyway um and it’s a tandem axle which is hard i don’t want to say hard but it’s not it’s unusual to find a 12 foot trailer with tandem axles yeah that small

[9:05] Dave: With a tandem is really an oddball setup yeah but when you buy them and have them built you can have

[9:11] Tom: Them built however by the way just well that’s and that’s uh so this is an older one it’s a 2001 um i forget the brand oh well actually it’s a rance r-a-n-c-e i think uh but the guy that bought it actually ordered it custom and he had the door installed on the drivers or the left side which is different i don’t like that actually it’s a european trailer yeah yeah i don’t mind it actually uh because you just get out of the car and there’s the door it’s it’s uh it’s convenient

[9:38] Ron: So what’s going to be nice though honestly is when we both go places and have to park next to each other to have the doors facing each other that way oh that would be cool we could even put something like above it and then we could have like an awning between the two of them yeah or we could hop sure if you’re going to talk talk in here remember oh yeah hop from one trailer to the next yeah i see

[10:03] Piper: What you’re saying they will they will do that too it would be so funny imagining that even

[10:10] Tom: Yeah welcome to my world

[10:14] Tom: Oh but uh yeah i’m really excited um like i said it’s a tandem axle has lightweight um axles it does not have the 3500 pound axles has 2200 pound axles so they’re torsion um oh those are nice though it really does right really like i hooked it up to my to my x5 and like i barely knew it was back there except you know looking in the mirror and that’s all you can see but yeah yeah and i was i was a little worried about the extra width because i know ron you had mentioned that you know you liked yours because you can see around it in the mirrors um and that is a

[10:48] Tom: Slight concern i have so i’m thinking i may go with like a wireless uh backup camera that i can use you know like kind of as a rearview mirror kind of a thing yeah the other thing you could do is

[10:58] Ron: Just get the mirror extensions for your your side mirrors for towing too but that’s something i didn’t want to have to do that’s why i yeah that’s why i went with the width i went with

[11:07] Tom: I mean but uh but the price was right i didn’t have to pay new trailer price which for an older trailer which i was you know everything i buy requires work and i’m okay with that

[11:19] Tom: Yeah but this one doesn’t require that much i was gonna say it’s in in good shape and it’s set up well so far it should have no corrosion correct nope there’s there’s zero corrosion funny story though funny story like there’s a sticker on the side of the trailer uh from the dealer that it was bought from and it was bought from a dealer in morris illinois so just down the road yeah so somehow this trailer was ordered custom in illinois and somehow ended up

[11:49] Tom: Here where i’m at and now it’s gonna end up back in illinois which is kind of funny i think it’s up many miles away and i’m back yeah um but yeah it’s gonna it’s gonna be it’s gonna be cool it’s not gonna be the way you want it yeah it’s not gonna be as bougie as ron’s trailer but it does have air conditioning uh there’s an air conditioning unit already on the on the roof so

[12:08] Dave: Which i think is worth about what you paid for it you’re in pretty good shape you’re in you’re in

[12:13] Ron: Good shape i think so too next i’m really excited i was gonna say next you’ll be buying a generator um i mean maybe and a fan carry with you and a fan a fan is a necessity absolutely fans kind of a

[12:25] Tom: Necessity i’ll i’ll be getting a fan for sure but yeah generator is not outside the realm of possibility and i don’t know if i’m gonna go with the battery inverters set up like what you have i i don’t know i’ll think about that but you have at least in the meantime yeah at least in the meantime i have a good usable trailer that i can use right now absolutely awesome which you’re probably gonna

[12:47] Ron: Need i have a feeling that’s that was probably one of the reasons you bought it i mean yeah i have

[12:55] Tom: Bought a lot of stuff since i’ve been here and i may need that trailer to get some of that stuff home

[13:01] Ron: Yes i mean that’s gotta that’s gotta make it easier to to help you sleep at night knowing you’re not worried about constraints of trying to get everything in the back of one right so what questions do you have piper she she passed me a note oh okay that’s what that was yeah talk into it

[13:23] Piper: What’s your question what’s corrosion if i’m even saying right you are so remember talk right into this

[13:30] Ron: Don’t mess with that there we go do you want you can take that one since you talked about yeah piper so

[13:36] Tom: Corrosion is basically a fancy word for rust do you know what that is yes same thing it’s just a

[13:43] Piper: Fancier word for rust that’s all it is why do we have to use fancy words instead of normal

[13:48] Ron: Understandings for kids because that’s how your dad likes to talk well and let’s be honest so rust comes from iron well right and yours is an aluminum trailer so you get that white and so mostly right so it is corrosion it’s not necessarily rust rust is what happens on iron so it’s corrosion is

[14:10] Piper: What happens on other metals too so it’s way different and not basically rust but yes actually rust is corrosion rust is a type of corrosion yes i think talking about this is making me even more

[14:23] Ron: Confused okay well then we will move on we’ll discuss this later yes yeah we can google it later

[14:28] Piper: And if if wow we use google for depend on our lives yes even though google can be wrong okay well

[14:36] Ron: Everything can be wrong unfortunately um if you have questions like that while we’re talking just wait till somebody’s at the end of a sentence and interject but then someone else is going to interject

[14:46] Piper: Well then you interject faster i i’m not good at interjecting it’s interrupting well we don’t want you to my friends always talk all lunch then we have to line up and i didn’t get to say a single

[14:59] Ron: Thing so i’ve learned to interrupt okay well let’s interject and talk into the microphone not dance back and forth because that makes it hard to hear dance back and forth oh boy he’s ready to kill me on this

[15:11] Piper: One so

[15:15] Ron: Yeah so you got a trailer and it will be exciting to get it home yeah and is there any racking in it

[15:20] Tom: Yet or is it just an empty box nope there is a uh there’s a craftsman tool bench and a couple of craftsman cabinets in it that i plan on removing okay and then i’ll put the rack system and all that kind of

[15:32] Ron: Stuff because i don’t need a workbench in there have you figured out what the what track you’re

[15:36] Tom: Going to do uh it’s going to be the x track like like what you have are you going to do the black one yeah let’s see look at you go i like the looks of the black and i’m going to probably end up painting the walls instead of putting the paneling on because there’s already some kind of paneling on it i’ll just paint it white you know for the light uh and then and then yeah i’ll put the black

[15:59] Ron: Track system on top of that see and i might i’m i probably have more of the the wall covering if you want to do it that way we’ll we’ll talk how’s that sound we’ll get it taken care of i’m going to keep everybody up to date by the way i just had a note passed to me from my daughter that says i farted so oh she did and thanks for sharing apparently that’s why she is waving that i’m the i’m glad i’m where i’m at and not where you were at ah

[16:32] Tom: Piper if it’s anything like your father’s oh boy hey speaking of that like we’re going off topic but that’s okay like can i mention what you did to me at the top of your stairwell last time i were there

[16:45] Ron: I don’t remember what i did to you yeah yeah oh yeah you do i do what did you no we don’t have

[16:50] Piper: To talk about that it’s okay no what did you do seriously i’m gonna make you say that i’m not

[16:54] Ron: Gonna say it tommy’s gonna spin the yarn and tell the tale well it’s not much of a tale other than

[16:59] Tom: Ron trapped me at the top of his stairs in a fog of stench that i had uh never experienced before

[17:07] Piper: In my lifetime wait i remember that i had to smell it for a long time too yeah i could taste it it was

[17:15] Dave: It was so bad i followed five minutes later and it hit me in the face and in the face it had some

[17:21] Ron: Lingering capabilities i will tell you that right now definitely had somebody to see a doctor

[17:28] Tom: Yeah are you eating oh anyway i don’t think it’s just i don’t think you ate that i think it crawled up in you and died i think is what that was it had to come out somehow oh burped it out so dave you

[17:41] Dave: Finished reggie’s airplane yeah i did it got picked up yeah no he gave me a e-flight ultimate uh 300 i don’t know what it was anyway e-flight ultimate um had uh some odd 90s covering on it that was very almost like mica film it was very very light and clear um was it brittle it was brittle and it had like no adhesion to it i tried to like tack it back down with an iron and it it just

[18:14] Dave: Wouldn’t stick and so i ended up stripping the wings um and recovering them with uh the china coat i can’t even remember which brand it is i use um value cover value cover yeah um and that stuff that stuff works really well it does like it does tear a little bit easier than like monoco that’s the only thing i’ve noticed so if you get like a little nick in it and you put any pressure on it it really tears quite easily other than that uh it works almost exactly like ultra cut i really like

[18:45] Ron: It yeah i’m i’m happy with how i’ve or how that’s covered before um and it’s a good price and the

[18:50] Dave: Price is excellent it really is a roll for less money yeah there’s no paper roll in it so there’s

[18:55] Ron: No throwaway yeah it’s great it’s nice and and compact when it’s rolled up um yeah the stuff the

[19:02] Tom: Stuff i’ve used it feels like the best compromise of both ultra code and monocoat it’s like the best

[19:09] Dave: Of both best of both yeah sorry about that um so really like that stuff and got it nice and covered it looks good and um the white is much brighter than the white that was i did not read to cover the fuselage so fuselage is a duller white than this stuff but i think it looks okay it probably won’t last long anyway so it doesn’t matter and it’s got a couple other issues with the fuselage that i just kind of like patched up yeah and if he flies it and likes it and wants it redone i was just i had a fair amount of time involved in it i’m sure and sure try to keep his price down a little bit

[19:44] Dave: For him so i got it flyable if he flies it likes it and wants to proceed then we can finish yeah do it right tricking out the fuselage yeah but if it comes back to you in 100 pieces you’re not gonna have to worry about then yes moot point um so we’ll see how that goes i was glad to get that out of my shop though because it takes up it’s small but it takes up a lot of room yeah well that’s the wings i was gonna say that’s the problem with the biplane

[20:14] Dave: Yeah but they’re so pretty and i thought the beaver was a pain in the butt to put together this thing is really bad to put together so yeah i’m not surprised yeah that that beaver was troublesome yeah troubles with beavers yeah that was a lot of work it’s still putting together i’ve got it sitting on the bed and so it’s a one piece now it’s one piece yeah i don’t blame him you should

[20:40] Tom: Have seen the wiring the mess of wiring he was trying to deal with yeah you got ailerons flaps and

[20:45] Dave: Lights all from two two different directions going into a tiny little space yeah yeah not worth it but it did look good flying in the dusk i’m just saying it really did i was quite happy with it yeah very nice sorry it’s okay can we move it on that’s all i’ve got i really haven’t got much done

[21:05] Ron: This last couple weeks so so my my nitro airplane i think after we last recorded we figured out what it probably is yeah without too much doubt yeah 90 sure it’s close enough for me a falcon 56 so the the thing that you guys figured out was that there’s no wingtips on it right it’s just got flat plate wingtips instead of the carved wingtips which makes a difference in the wingspan and

[21:37] Ron: Converted it to a tail dragger yeah it’s been converted to a tail dragger and there’s no canopy on it so yep it is just kind of plain but we’ll see i did get uh i did get a little bit see what you did there plain oh that was completely not planned oh that was amazing and i gave you credit for it though yeah piper looks i said it’s kind of plain and it’s an airplane yeah i’m kind of just

[22:05] Piper: Zoned out because i’m so confused i have no idea well remember to talk in here even when you’re confused i’m just like i’m just zoned out because i’m so confused because i have no idea about airplanes

[22:16] Ron: Basically yeah she’s still confused about corrosion yeah but remember you wanted this you asked

[22:21] Piper: Okay that’s before i knew it was gonna be so confusing okay i’m lost in my own siding we’ll

[22:29] Ron: Get you into it here when we talk about stuff shortly okay yep we’ll get there so just behave so you’ll be in your element before you know it i did do a little bit of work on it um long story short i put a ar637 in it what’s that it’s the receiver that is a spectrum receiver that now has the as3x on it what’s the stability control so that uh if the wind takes a little bit it kind of

[22:53] Piper: Evens it out for me okay if i don’t stop asking questions we’re gonna be doing this for way over

[22:58] Ron: Two hours well we’re not you have a bedtime coming up actually you have a bedtime that was about seven

[23:02] Piper: Minutes ago so i don’t like that so i don’t care i know i’m not surprised i’m happy to stay up so

[23:09] Ron: Anyway i put a new receiver in it and uh also did the refreshed battery pack the five cell nimh so we’re going back to nimh batteries um oh just remembered yeah we didn’t talk about our trip to brian’s

[23:24] Dave: While i was home yeah we did that was last episode that was already of it yeah oh i guess we did okay oh that’s right now i remember yeah right yeah because i bought a stick yeah wait what he was

[23:37] Ron: Oh yeah ultra stick you did and anyway you didn’t yeah you can talk about what you did on that too here shortly yeah i forgot all about that wow um anyway so i checked the controls and servos and all that kind of stuff uh it’s a can be something or another i don’t remember what but anyway so as i was installing all the new electronics and stuff and and had the battery powered up and and doing all that piper started messing around with controls on the on the stick uh around the transmitter normally i would say hey let’s not do that because you know let’s not do that but then i thought you know

[24:12] Ron: There’s there’s no reason not to let her just mess around with that for several minutes it’s a good test on these servos that i have no clue how old they are or how good they are see if they’re overheat glitch out exactly so she sat there and played with them for a little while while i was doing other things and knock on wood so far they seem to be okay so i think we’ll good we’ll fly with them and then hopefully not crash with them um that should be fine i knocked on wood you said you said i did say knock on wood i don’t remember saying but okay god not all the time one one knock is good

[24:47] Piper: But why not three knocks okay now three knocks is fine but not 19 i i added a 10 i only did nine times

[24:55] Ron: Not 19 you are right she’s very factual by the way she she is a numbers girl um anyway so dave was gonna bring his a fuel pump for me because that’s one thing i haven’t bought yet but he pretty much just told me he couldn’t find it because he didn’t want to let me borrow one um

[25:11] Dave: It’s a good possibility i either gave it to daniel or i sold it yeah and listen there’s a couple in

[25:16] Tom: My basement laurie will be helping you will be happy to help you find them well i might i i just need

[25:22] Ron: To buy my own i think that’s the only thing i’m missing at this point because i had to buy the glow that i literally threw away less than a year ago um but anyway so i still have to go through that

[25:35] Ron: This whole next week and all that is just ridiculously busy with stuff every night so i don’t know if i’ll have time to fly this before the the vintage fly-in uh if not then i guess i’m not going to fly it there but if so i will and we will just kind of see how all that goes yeah this week this next week’s gonna be so crazy like cray cray i know so that’s all on that um now do you want to talk about rc fest yes

[26:07] Ron: So piper i love how she’s so excited about it i know well okay so here’s the thing and this year was a little bit different so they didn’t do rc fest last year when we were talking about or when i found out it was going to be uh on again this year and we were getting kind of closer to it i was told to ask them uh whether or not there was going to be a jump house and that was at piper’s request and then i was told to ask them what food vendors and food trucks are going to be there at crystal’s request so we know we know what they found to be

[26:43] Ron: Important at rc fest um yes ironically enough though piper didn’t even want to do the bounce house when we were there because she was too excited for other stuff can i talk about what i got now okay well you’re kind of leading it to that that’s the point i know we build up to it so that you can then do it so i let’s talk a little bit about the event first just to make it more difficult days like he’s pushed his microphone away he’s he knows oh god the the earrings come off he’s he’s

[27:19] Ron: Picking up a plane he’s starting to to go what is that well i wasn’t like that before was it maybe i didn’t see it anyway well he’s finding more things i have to do on that falcon 56 before he’s finding more problems before you fly it yeah before i fly it thanks dave um no anyway so rc fest was back this year they had a lot of stuff going on some try me courses and all that kind of stuff set up that

[27:48] Piper: Piper did what try me’s did you do kid so i did don’t just call me kid that’s my first rule of all things okay child what did you do nope we’re moving on what did you do but um so the try me’s that i did at rc fest were so there was like this nascar race one well it doesn’t necessarily race but i don’t know why i said that but you’re you’re okay you did the nascar cars the try me’s there

[28:18] Piper: Um like there was like a time just like a random time yeah like we were like they weren’t doing it so we were gonna go get um our nascar car and turns out we got it from the very long walk we came back they were doing it again we had to do the very long walk again to put it away yeah so they had the try

[28:46] Ron: Me track set up they were doing the try me stuff and then we went into the hobby shop we noticed there was nobody on there so i asked one of the guys i said hey we have our own can we just go grab it and run it on there he’s like yeah that’s fine he said they’re trying to figure out if they’re going to do the try me’s on it again uh he said they might start up in a little while but they haven’t got it all figured out yet so we went and grabbed the car and it wasn’t a terribly long walk but i mean it was probably 400 feet maybe something like that um so we went got it got the battery put in got all that stuff ready to go walked back up and by the time we got to the try me nascar setup

[29:20] Ron: They had uh they were doing the try me things again and like so we walked back put it back and then she got in line put mine back in the car and then she got in line and did it again and like i

[29:32] Piper: Like right now i don’t think it took a long time but then i’m pretty sure i thought it took like 5 000 hours yeah well it didn’t take that long it didn’t take that long but it felt like it took a long time i was sweating so much out there yeah that’s that’s my main dislike it was it was on the warmer side but it wasn’t extremely hot yeah but like they i also did there was like but like for still like on the nascar um dad said well ron said i don’t know which one to say on here it’s fine

[30:12] Piper: You can you can call him dad yeah he’s your dad it’s fine dad said um that he was glad that we didn’t use ours because at the beginning like i’ve never done a nascar on such a small track well i’ve never done a nascar but so um i i crashed into the wall like 5 000 times no and like not that many

[30:37] Ron: But you know what i mean i do like i know what you mean i’m gonna be honest those cars probably six times those cars take a licking i mean there were i mean like none of the none of the kids that i saw do it look like they had ever done it before and they might go three feet and then run right into a wall or turn around go backwards run into somebody else those cars are built very well by the way

[31:05] Piper: Yeah like but by the end of the day there were only like two cars and like at the beginning there were

[31:11] Ron: Like more than five yeah i think they started out with six and by the end of the day i don’t know if they just didn’t have enough people charging batteries or or what or if maybe they broke who knows yeah because they looked really rough that well yeah and i don’t know like those obviously are used at other events too so it’s not just rc or rc fest that they did it so they take that track

[31:34] Piper: Um to like other places to do stuff yeah was it just an oval oh yeah yeah it was like banked what’s banked mean so it means it goes up at an angle it’s not just flat yeah yeah and of course whenever i ran into the wall like like when i was going straight then i went like sideways of course i would slowly roll down and so i would keep hitting the wall because i couldn’t get the steering figured out because i kept going down and i couldn’t figure out the six but i also are we

[32:14] Ron: Say that was funny because like they had somebody standing in the middle of the oval to to move the

[32:19] Piper: Cars when they got marshall yeah actually embarrassing when you do it like are you talking about like when the car whams in and knocks the thing down oh well yeah and that that was the other thing too so the

[32:32] Ron: Track didn’t seem to be like constructed all that well because the inner uh guards like when you ran into

[32:39] Piper: Them kept like falling off yeah and i i kind of ran into them lots of times and i thought i broke it because like i i didn’t see anyone else do it before i did it go figure because i wasn’t watching a lot but but so i was like okay so i just used your words and so like um i’m not good at talking instead of

[34:15] Ron: This okay so anyway she did the nascar thing she did pretty good on that a lot of the kids were

[34:20] Piper: Running into the walls too and breaking them down breaking them down but just a person in the middle they kept like it kept having to like like he would look at the person that did it and like make eye contact and then um like put the thing back yeah and a lot of times though it was funny because

[34:37] Ron: The other kids didn’t quite know how to get to reverse on them and piper at least knew how to yeah so every time they would walk up and try and grab the car she had just enough time to hit the reverse button twice and so then it would like just take off and reverse while they were trying to grab it

[34:52] Piper: That’s kind of funny yeah that happened so many times only a couple times he actually turned it but so okay go on at first i didn’t know how but then i figured it out and like oh you have to press twice oh i get it because they’re faster cars and you could really hurt someone if you did an accident not like exactly not like the rock crawlers yeah but yeah what do you want like the other try me now

[35:21] Ron: No we’re not going to do that yet so we ended up buying some nascar cars so i already had the uh the one for my collection then i saw they had some pretty good prices on them so i asked uh some of our friends if they wanted any tommy wanted one told me he didn’t care which one so i bought him i think i bought you the number 22 do you want me to go check no that’s the one that you said

[35:49] Ron: Well i don’t know which one’s a ford can i please go check 22 or 24 i don’t know nascar so it doesn’t matter either you don’t need to check it’s okay so anyway i i had picked one of those up for you and then they actually got cheaper towards the end of the day a little bit and sit down thank you and anyway um so i picked up two more of them two different of the uh of the bodies and stuff nascar because i wasn’t sure like i know cody had said something about maybe being interested in it

[36:20] Ron: Piper might be interested if we can start teaching her to actually drive better if you make a track i will be happy and do it like a lot yeah if i make a track i know that’s just another thing on my list of things to do however that’s that’s the next thing on your list but anyway so we we did buy a couple extras of those um and then tommy decided i i sent you a picture of the three we got because i don’t know who it is i really don’t care what ones i have and you decided you wanted the number five

[36:48] Tom: That was after yeah that was after you told me that reggie took the 22 okay yeah yeah because he

[36:54] Ron: Bought his own number 22 which is the shell pens oil joey logano um and i bought the uh william byron the number 24 raptor that’s a cool looking one sorry but i have no idea who the people were talking about we don’t either to be honest piper i don’t follow nascar at all i’m glad that i don’t know something that you guys don’t know yep we are all in the dark on this one um yep but anyway so

[37:22] Piper: Understand that word of speech we’re in the dark figure of speech yes i do not understand means we

[37:28] Ron: Don’t know what’s what they are we don’t know what’s going on we’re in the dark we haven’t seen the light well already i have one okay five things from this yeah you should sit on this like every time right dave um so anyway we also rc fest brought in a couple other rc cars um we we actually might have to change the name of this to like the rc car lab podcast with what we’re starting on now yeah

[38:50] Piper: Try me i did wait how much time do i have you have 13 seconds what that’s are you serious we’re not going to spend a lot of time on it so about the other try me it was like a soccer try me and you had another like really fast car and um like so there were a bunch of balls in the thing and um like i did that try me like at least three times and um the last time i did it it was the last time right where it like died yeah there were so many that died at like the exact same time batteries

[39:25] Piper: That’s yeah yeah they were all ran about the same time yeah and it was a decently big thing and they had to like clear it up so fast once it was done and then get the batteries charged yeah yeah so these

[39:38] Ron: Were the arma mojave groms the 16th scale little stadium trucks um gonna be honest i don’t know much about any of these either but the one she was doing there they had the brushed versions

[39:51] Piper: What’s a brush version we can talk later it’s a it’s a slower motor what’s a slower okay i’m sorry i

[39:59] Ron: Have like five no i know but we are really dragging on so we’ll we’ll do that afterwards what’s wait why

[40:34] Ron: Like really small so she got the axial scx 30 ford bronco rock crawler a crawler crawler

[40:44] Piper: And then i also got a 50 plus mile per hour uh what the wind pink blue i didn’t realize it was 50 plus

[40:54] Ron: It said 35 plus on the box and to be fair i handled it well to be fair you did you’re doing very good with it so she bought 100 plus she bought the the army or arma mojave grom blx 20 or 223 s for anybody that knows what that means that should tell you something um so out of the box it’s a two cell lipo and 35 miles an hour four-wheel drive she did a pretty good job with now this does have the what is it the dlc or whatever they call them now it’s the it’s the as3x for cars what’s as3x for cars

[41:32] Ron: Well we went over as3x earlier it’s the same thing as as3x for airplanes uh-huh so it helps you drive in a straight line if you start kind of getting out of out of kilter like start going sideways that

[41:44] Piper: Automatically corrects your front wheels for you wait so that’s hard because whenever i’m doing it and it’s like a turn i actually stop on the throttle and turn it and it does like a like skid yes

[41:58] Ron: That is how it usually happens um that’s called a fish tail but anyway we’ll do that later so anyway yeah so on a 2s it’s it’s uh 35 miles an hour i didn’t realize you can run it on 3s pretty much from stock and it will do 50 plus miles an hour so she’s excited about that now we don’t have a lot of areas at the house right now to to run those so i did cut grass in a very just to test i cut a

[42:30] Ron: Little square outside as low as the morrow would go which is 1.2 inches so no it’s really not that bad but anyway so in some spots yeah so we’ll have to go out and try those whenever we have a chance

[42:45] Piper: We need to like go to the beach and get five full buckets no 57 full buckets why are the numbers for me always 57 i don’t know but a lot of buckets of sand and then like put it there even though we would get like lots of sand in our eyes and mouth and get it in our poo so anyway i ended up buying

[43:05] Ron: The army or arma i keep saying army i don’t know why uh the mini kraton 3s blx what’s so the one i got i mean i really don’t know i don’t know what these are i know there’s a bigger one that’s just the kraton and this is or maybe it’s a kraton i don’t know k-r-a-t-o-n kraton kraton i’m showing my stupidity on all these but anyway same with me it came with two 3s batteries which i thought was kind of nice two 3s 3000 or 2000s and uh yeah i’m happy with the way that is that like a 10th scale truck or

[43:39] Ron: Something it is no it’s smaller um oh okay it’s about the same size footprint as the 16th scale thing piper got but okay it looks bigger to me for some reason which thing did i thought your grom

[43:54] Piper: Thing i swear it was smaller i mean yeah it it was anyway it was a bit like what’s this called wider no the other thing longer yeah it was a bit longer but um mine was way wider yeah i still think

[44:14] Ron: That counts as being with the work it could be but anyway so with all of these new purchases and with all the little rc cars i have had in the past and i guess present with all this oh wait a

[44:27] Tom: Minute before you say it do i see a new spreadsheet entry what’s a spreadsheet entry no not yet um okay

[44:34] Ron: That’s not a half bad idea what i was gonna say though is that i have started a collection of these little slt2 transmitters that come with every single car you buy so basically yeah i have another one upstairs that goes to my car i know so we need to figure out how to keep them with each one

[44:57] Piper: And number them so we know it’s what we need to label we need to label and be like okay so this one is like for example my 50 mile per hour card that i got we could like label that and say pipers 50 plus mile per hour colors so what i would probably do is just like number six

[45:25] Ron: And then number six goes with the other one or color code them oh there you go oh yeah color code but

[45:33] Piper: Mine’s yours already color coded mine’s basically already color coded but all the other ones aren’t

[45:38] Ron: But anyway we can talk about that later because we need to get moving along why i don’t piper i don’t want to go to bed anyway i gave her the dad look by the way that’s what why she stopped i saw that yeah um i felt it all the way over here and you stopped talking too i guess it worked and so dave hasn’t said a word for the last 20 minutes so yeah well he got the dad look a long time ago the other things i picked up and this was um i’m gonna say this was a deal of a lifetime

[46:12] Ron: Um all through some comments on facebook that worked out pretty good i ended up with two fms super scorpions is it two or like one and three quarter well there’s two airframes so maybe one and if you want to call it that one whatever um one is completely bind and fly i i did break unfortunately one of the control horns and it needs to be replaced oops um but that’s okay other than that i mean it has the receiver and everything in it so it’s i already bound it up to my transmitter and

[46:48] Ron: Put the gear down made sure everything worked and have kind of been chomping at the bit to get that one flown the other one oh and that one is is kind of in rough shape like you can tell it’s been flown you can tell it’s been um landed a little bit yeah banged up landings were kind of rough on some of them um but that’s okay because that’s when i’ll fly and not care about really and just be able to have fun with it so the other one the second one is pretty much new except there’s no power system in

[47:18] Ron: It so there’s no motor or esc um it’s i’m sorry did you say what these were yet yeah fms super scorpions

[47:28] Tom: Oh yeah okay good what you already bought yeah well mine’s the v2 but which is really the same thing

[47:34] Ron: Well this is i’m sure v1s because they’re older yeah um and they weren’t new but they’re still gonna be fun to fly and yours is yours is the the uh oh my god the camo one success yeah it’s the orange though oh yeah yeah yeah so we we have orange that’s what i have too yeah i like that better

[47:55] Tom: Than i think you should put the yeah i think you should put the 8s setup in one of those i think

[48:00] Ron: That’d be a lot of fun i might have to think about it we’ll see um yeah we’ll see but they will both fly eventually i’m sure because those going back to the the swap meet where we saw them in decatur decatur yeah um i have wanted one for many many years so yeah fate has intervened and now not only do i have one i have dose one which means two yeah okay two airframes whatever um only thing was he

[48:32] Ron: Couldn’t find the second uh uh wing tube but he says he knows where it is he just didn’t have a chance to grab it before he left so he’s going to bring it to me at the next meeting next week so yay okay good times so that was our haul that we got at the uh rc fest that was fun and then we ended the night on what i would say is a high point of a redemption flight through the ring of fire anybody that remembers uh two years ago i did this and my first try at going through the ring of fire

[49:09] Ron: Was um flying into the ring and breaking my airplane ring one ron zero yeah um yep and it just i’m glad dave came back in just to make fun of me but anyway it uh it was perfect timing it beat me um so anyway this was my redemption time i was able to go up again and there was a bunch i mean i don’t know how many people but there was a bunch of us going through it um so if you don’t know or don’t remember the ring of fire from like this setup kind of originated at uh air meet in germany and

[49:47] Ron: There’s a little bit different they actually soak rags in some sort of fuel and light the rags on fire which i didn’t realize that um rc fest here though uses a trampoline that they found on facebook marketplace and it is plumbed with propane and then they just light that on fire and there’s a really cool flamethrower mounted on the very bottom of it that shoots flames up uh via a command i was gonna say via an rc transmitter uh that they went into the the audience and let some of

[50:19] Ron: The kids press to try and take some of the planes out um so i took the slow ultra stick there again and the first pass through there i was i was so nervous because a lot of people around a lot of people that know what they’re doing compared to me and it’s kind of getting dark which means your your depth reception is kind of off plus you’re it’s just an odd setup because you’re not used to flying through something like that that is literally lit on fire first time that i went through i almost

[50:53] Ron: Doinked it and had the same ending as last time hit the right hand side of the uh wing on it and it spun around and did a full 360 and luckily i thought fast enough to just full throttle and it was able to pull away um so did it go through the ring twice then no no no so it kind of hit it and then as it went through it just kind of pirouetted around oh okay and then i was able to like i said save it

[51:24] Ron: Luckily so that was the first time then i was able to go through i think two more times nice and successfully the third time though i’m gonna say this wasn’t my fault i am completely innocent in this one one of the guys that was there decided that it was easier to start going backwards through it so he was flying the opposite of the pattern and we had a mid-air head-on collision in which my fuselage went through the ring of fire my wing did not

[51:55] Ron: Um it’s funny because i saw a couple different angles of videos that people had taken i didn’t realize how far in front of the ring of fire my airplane was when we hit but it was a lot closer to us than i thought it was when it happened because you know depth perception all that kind of stuff but he was flying a night timber and it took him out also it just kind of sucked and ended or ended the day but it was a lot of fun i already ordered replacement parts because let’s just say i knew this was going to happen had to get a uh so that little center wing joiner part the

[52:31] Ron: Little plastic one that holds the wing on had to replace that because it tore it off um had to buy a control link set too because the uh on the i think it was the elevator the control horn the little piece that goes through whatever that little you know on the clevis uh broke off so got that and then they were out of course of the propellers and the uh uh what’s it called the spinner they didn’t have those in stock either so i’ve got to get those next month when they’re back in

[53:02] Ron: In uh in stock unfortunately the led strips and all that stuff were also torn in half off of the wing oh no so i will have to redo those and find out exactly what needs to be repaired because i have not even plugged it in yet since i have been home but at least i have some of the parts and i do have enough leds to fix it based on whatever goes wrong so we’ll get that back up and then next year when you’re back rc fest is going on we will uh we’ll have to all go out i’m really i’m really glad that

[53:35] Tom: The ring of fire came back because i was like was it last year or the year before it got in pretty rough shape and they said yeah we’re done with the ring of fire right and then i’m glad it’s back it

[53:46] Ron: Wasn’t until well actually it was after we recorded last because last i heard the ring of fire was not going to happen and then dustin came through and pretty much did it all on his own so yay happy that happened happy that we’re able to have fun with it again and i can’t wait till next year yeah it’s

[54:06] Tom: Gonna be hopefully i get to i get to participate next year too with my oh my very own uh slow ultra stick that you put lights that you put lights on too that’s so awesome i did yeah i should put

[54:16] Ron: Pictures out there somewhere you should you should have done a build log on but that’s okay a little

[54:21] Tom: Too late to think about that well i was in a hurry i thought maybe i would get to fly it with dave but

[54:26] Ron: I didn’t get it done on time it happened yeah um i would want it looks really cool yeah speaking of looking really cool i saw the new e-flight oh i’m gonna i’m gonna do this pilatus pilatus there you go pc21 um they had that at rc fest and they were flying it man that’s a nice looking airplane looks like it really flies good i know right um it’s 1.3 meters so it’s about 51 inch wingspan and it’s actually longer than it is wide so it’s 57 inch uh long yes honey pov of dad oh where can

[55:05] Ron: I get this plane maybe um and so anyway 100 plus miles an hour and that i i don’t know i can’t decide if i want to spend the 529 dollars on it which sucks but man it’s nice looking airplane it sounds good

[55:21] Tom: Too it does especially with that five blade prop yeah is that a 6s 5000 setup or that is uh between

[55:28] Ron: 4 000 and 7 000 milliamp hour batteries on yes 6s so yeah might be worth looking at it does sound really cool you know what else i we were remiss about talking about and i’m glad now we have remembered because i wrote it down do you know do you know what i’m saying you know what i’m saying no i don’t so tommy has become the last of the rc plane lab hosts to become published oh yeah i mean there needs to be more fanfare than that i guess do do i don’t remember what button that is

[56:28] Ron: How i’ve written reviews and stuff for the magazine dave also did that he did repair log that was published tommy just did one for the august edition of the magazine that came out and he has his own review in print now has that never happened before no this is the first time yeah it’s the first time

[56:51] Ron: Of all the people who have done it now well no of of us three hosts of this podcast i know but i’m

[57:10] Tom: Tommy do you remember what the airplane was so yeah i do uh so it’s a airplane i’m actually quite fond of that uh actually brings back good memories too you know because it’s been a while since i’ve been to toledo uh this was one of those um samson rc hobby cap 231s and you know i’m a huge fan of caps uh and this is the matt chapman splat scheme so uh it was an airplane i was drawn to at the toledo swap meet i bought one there and i put it together and basically did a build review uh and that’s in the august issue of model aviation and i’m really happy with how it turned out

[57:41] Tom: Yeah it’s good i had a lot of help from uh from you ron and uh and terry helped me out too a lot so uh for that i i thank you guys but it was a lot of fun and i’m looking forward to doing another one

[57:54] Ron: Yeah maybe someday i think you should so this is also the one that uh you got the wing signed yes you didn’t you didn’t put anything about that in the review though yeah i didn’t i thought about

[58:09] Tom: It um i really did but uh so i you know i i didn’t have the airplane with me to take pictures when i finally finished the review wherever i was at at the time um so i couldn’t like get a picture of the signature so i felt like that needed to be part of it if i was going to mention it

[58:31] Tom: It just saying well that’s true that’s yeah no i get it but yeah yeah it’s a it’s a pretty cool it’s a pretty cool airplane and the fact that i you know that i have matt chapman the actual matt chapman’s signature on one of the wing panels is pretty special yeah because that’s the the splat scheme that he made famous yes exactly yep so yeah it was a it was a lot of fun to do and uh to anybody who was thinking about doing it um take it from a guy like me who’s not really good at writing things and uh describing things and all that it was it was a lot of fun and uh getting

[59:04] Tom: Outside the comfort zone was was actually pretty rewarding yeah it is it’s i don’t want to say

[59:10] Ron: Harder than you think but it’s more involved than yes you would initially i agree yep and pictures are

[1:03:02] Ron: Do do do because i i look just to be sure i don’t think there’s anything on here about it being uh large scale no there’s not there are many giant scale planes there but i don’t think that’s a necessity anyway registration 40 bucks if you can make it fine that would be awesome if you can’t make it to be a pilot whatever come out and say hi anyway okay i think that’s about all i have

[1:03:44] Ron: Next week are there he’s he’s gonna i don’t think he’s gonna go out as much obviously as for the jet meet but there’s gonna be at least at least one maybe two meals in the evenings provided by him i mean it makes it worthwhile honestly i know really that yeah he’s he’s so good at it if he quits

[1:04:09] Ron: Like attendance for the jet meet is just gonna plummet because i mean that’s honestly of all the places i’ve ever gone to any fly-ins or been to or seen or flown in it’s the best food we ever had yeah very amazing i concur i tried to cur once i concur now too because you couldn’t yeah yes piper

[1:04:31] Piper: Two questions so one is there going to be food trucks at any of the events food trucks no in two

[1:04:40] Ron: Are you getting served meals probably on saturday because i’m sure we’ll have something served because saturday wraps up at these events uh with the uh the align our warbirds and classics we’ll have a um oh my my just went blank an awards banquet kind of thing three so what times are they uh usually that’s between five and six on saturday evening four oh

[1:05:11] Piper: Are the meals free no five how long are the events so the event runs from uh thursday friday and

[1:05:21] Ron: Saturday 8 a.m to like 5 p.m i said events well that’s all the other ones i think they’re probably 8 a.m to a little afternoon maybe up to five what i wanted to i wanted okay go on last question make

[1:05:38] Piper: It a good one um let’s see i’m trying to find the best question then we can come back to it one of

[1:05:43] Ron: The things you said reminded me when we went to rc fest i i have a little bit of a gripe that was nobody’s fault but they had food trucks there and there was one it was a pasta truck you know me in and pastas and i was waiting for crystal to get there because she was doing some stuff at home piper came with me first which i actually think if crystal was there i we probably wouldn’t have been able to get as many cars because you know she’s a grinch but anyway um no she’s not the grinch the store but anyway there was a food truck there and i was so excited because it had a lot of

[1:06:18] Ron: Good pasta stuff on it and i was waiting for her to get there they left at like four o’clock they packed up and just the pasta truck was gone i’m so sorry i know it did kind of make me sad you do like pasta i yeah that’s my downfall but anyway what was piper’s last question so my last question

[1:06:39] Piper: How many rc’s things are there name every single one like drones planes boats cars name all of them even helicopters and motorcycles name every single thing of rc well thank you everybody for listening

[1:06:57] Ron: Um i think it’s time to no get out of this one because piper is doing her darndest to get out of going to bed but it is no no piper there’s a lot of them and i’m now giving you the dad look so you must behave you you’re starting to give me the dad look i’m i don’t want to have to go full dad look should i check my mouth yeah that’s a good idea oh and what was that is that here you can hear that yeah is that by you yeah yeah oh is that an airplane no that’s yeah sounds like a siren

[1:07:38] Piper: I’ve got nothing to cover other than she needs to go to bed i do not need to go to bed i have school tomorrow when i only get up at six anyway i do not care about school i get good enough grades
