[00:00:58] No, it just had a lot of sawdust and stuff on it, so I assumed it was a 46 model.

[00:01:05] It is my shop computer. It is covered in paint, sawdust, lacquer thinner, you name it.

[00:01:11] And that's okay. It's still chugging.

[00:01:13] It's a sign of a healthy workshop. Stuff gets done in his workshop.

[00:01:18] So dust and stuff is a sign of a healthy workshop? Yeah. That my shop out there is perfect.

[00:03:13] Yeah. End of year wrap-up. And it's been exactly a year since we did this. We did this on the day after Christmas last year. Did we really? Yeah. Because my house exploded and…

[00:03:23] Yeah. We had to, remember, go up in his attic and fix his water pipe?

[00:03:26] Technically, your house didn't explode. Your pipe did.

[00:03:28] Well, he had a pipe burst in the attic. Yeah.

[00:03:31] Yeah. Because it was like 12 degrees outside.

[00:03:33] Yeah. It was much colder this time last year.

[00:03:35] I do kind of remember that, but I don't remember the timing. Like, I don't know how you remember days. Like, you remember the day we recorded last year. Tommy doesn't even remember you being here. I don't know.

[00:03:49] He's still acclimating to daily life.

[00:03:51] So you have half your hearing and half your memory, then, is what you're saying. My right ear is fine. My left hemisphere is fine. Nice. I don't know about that one, though.

[00:04:04] I am bequeathing you parts I do not need. Okay. I have started assembling my Siegel models PC-9. Nice. Yes. And I looked, because I wasn't sure how old that was. What year was it? The catalog that came in it is 2010-11.

[00:07:22] But I wasn't just talking about the Electro Streak, either.

[00:07:24] And I think two of them were test flown on February 11th. Yeah. Yeah.

[00:07:30] So, where my mind went on that was, I thought I heard somebody say they were going to put a build log of their ARF assembly on the website.

[00:07:39] Well, there is a build log on the website.

[00:07:42] Oh. Remember that? Yeah, well, a lot's happened since then.

[00:07:46] Oh, there's some integrity issues then.

[00:07:49] Wait a second. Time out. My whole life got exploded. Not really exploded, but like flip turned upside down.

[00:08:04] Well, but I had a lot of things to do on my own.

[00:08:27] That's why he doesn't feel the need to finish the electro streak because it's so close to the shiny.

[00:08:34] Even though I feel like the electro streaks fly better than the shiny. Much more power. Faster. Smoother.

[00:08:41] I don't know what in it. Well, and they have rudders. Yeah. That makes them, I think.

[00:08:48] That's true. Mine lights up pretty good, I think.

[00:09:00] Because mine's fully sheeted because I was anticipating going a lot faster, which. Hey, six miles an hour is good. I was surprised that it didn't go as fast as the shiny. Apparently it's draggier than we think. Yeah. I think we've reached the aerodynamic limit.

[00:09:17] Well, I know we have because mine goes vertically as fast as it goes horizontally. Yeah.

[00:09:22] But you have a big prop with a, I mean, you need a smaller prop with a less. More RPM. That's it. Thank you. Not. It's going to say less diameter pitch. Oh. Less pitch. Less pitch. Not diameter. Yeah.

[00:09:34] So are you going to do another group project?

[00:09:37] No? Why?

[00:09:38] We should. You should. Well, it's a little too late now, honestly.

[00:09:45] Well, number one. I was going to say, I'm trying to think. A group. Hold on. A group project would require spending money that I don't have. So right now. Oh. Well, everybody knows, the car situation. So we're not spending right now. So a group project would have to be something that I already have.

[00:10:03] Which I don't have much that needs work on right now, except for the.

[00:10:22] Well, I'll find stuff to do. Like my shop needs cleaned. I can probably recover the contender now.

[00:10:27] Oh, and good idea. But no, no, no. This year we will not be doing. No. Maybe next year. We'll have to talk about it when there's more time to talk about it. Like, I mean, honestly, if we decided to do one now, it's a little late because we have no clue what we would build. We have no. Yeah. Logistics. No. Also ordered. No. Yeah. Nothing.

[00:10:50] Well, you can't buy Balsa right now anyway. Not in quantity anyway. Right. It's still hard to get, I'm assuming.

[00:10:58] I don't know. I don't remember who it is, but I've been getting emails from some Balsa place saying, hey, specials, this is what you get. And they were actually pretty good deals.

[00:11:07] I don't know who it was.

[00:11:08] National Balsa. Could have been.

[00:11:10] Sounds about right.

[00:11:11] Yeah.

[00:11:12] Dave's not impressed. Apparently not.

[00:11:14] I was not impressed with my order. No. Okay. The quality was eh.

[00:11:20] Okay. So did SIG not open up again?

[00:11:23] So SIG has moved to Chicago. Mm-hmm. As far as I know, they're on track to start producing kits and ARFs again, hopefully by the first of the year or around the first of the year.

[00:11:37] But they are moved, at least according to the internet. They have moved into their new digs in Chicago somewhere.

[00:11:46] Yeah. I don't remember what town it was or what suburb. I don't remember. That's kind of cool, though.

[00:11:51] Yeah. I'm looking forward to seeing SIG back on the map, so to speak. We should see if they do tours. Oh, that'd be neat.

[00:13:26] I've gotten rid of a lot, yeah. Excuse me, of ARFs and KISS. I've gotten rid of a lot, too. But, yeah, I don't think… I haven't purchased anything in a while, actually. No airplanes. I did, buy that engine from Brian. Traded for it, rather. But that big…

[00:13:50] That I was thinking about putting on my cup.

[00:13:53] Nice. Dave's still over there, like he's trying to solve an equation or something.

[00:14:02] Well, before we do that, let's talk highlights of the year. We did some cool stuff this year.

[00:14:10] Dave is going to join us this coming year.

[00:14:12] Yeah. Well, Toledo also is fun with all of us.

[00:14:18] That was our year.

[00:14:20] Well, we went to Jonal for the first time. That was… And that was amazing.

[00:14:24] That was a blast.

[00:14:26] Yeah. Can't wait to do it again.

[00:14:29] Like, seriously, I had a dream the other day that I was back there. That was the whole dream, was just we were back at Jonal.

[00:14:35] So, it's an incredible experience. The whole week. I mean, the things you see there,?

[00:14:47] What was Daniel telling you about his wife and the trip? I didn't catch all that conversation. Otherwise, I'd do it.

[00:14:55] So, something about… He said, yeah, I'm going to go to Jonal next year. And she's like, okay. And he didn't tell her where it's at. So, I think she was under the assumption that it's just going to be some little weekend… Local weekend. Local, like to greet her or whatever. Well, I guess… And then a conversation happened sometime later. And he said something to the effect of, well, yeah, I'm going to be in, North Carolina, anyway.

[00:15:26] And she's like, what? What are you talking about? He's like, yeah, well, that's, Jonal's in… It's actually South Carolina. But he told her North Carolina. And for a week. And then she was like, well, you didn't tell me that. And then there was this whole conversation about him trying to tell her about Jonal.

[00:15:44] Whoopsie. Is Daniel going now? That's what I was going to ask.

[00:15:47] Well, I mean, I think… Yeah, I think he's still planning on going. So…

[00:15:52] I think we're up. Yeah.

[00:15:53] So, yeah. It's going to be a good time. We're going to have the whole crew this time.

[00:15:58] Supposedly. I mean, we'll see if Fredgy backs out or not.

[00:16:01] No, he won't. I think he'll go.

[00:16:03] But so… Okay, we talk about how much fun we have when we're gone. And, Laura, you're used to Tommy being gone for… Yeah….times. Months at a time.

[00:16:12] He was gone a lot this year. Even prior to… He had a lot of work trips prior to him leaving. And then he was at Jonal like two weeks before he left.

[00:16:21] So, you're used to him being gone.

[00:16:22] I'm used to him being gone. Off and off.

[00:16:24] But, like… Dave, what do you do with your animals when you're gone? What is your brother going to do? And, Crystal, what did you have to do? Because you had… Piper's Lad School. You had all that kind of stuff you had to deal with last year.

[00:16:37] I honestly don't remember. Cool.

[00:16:39] You and Tommy should hang out more often.

[00:16:43] No, I don't remember it being a pain or anything like that, so… Good.

[00:16:48] So, that tells me Ron pretty much contributes nothing. So, she can operate just fine without you.

[00:16:53] I didn't take it that way at first, but yeah, that's kind of what it sounds like. Wait a minute.

[00:16:59] I can tell you if he was gone like that when our kids were little, it would probably be worse, but…

[00:17:04] Like when they're six or seven?

[00:17:06] Yeah. But we had three of them versus one, but we're empty nesters, so we just have the dog.

[00:17:15] Yeah. Fred's my problem. I'm still not sure about leaving him for a week, but…

[00:17:20] You can't take dogs, do?

[00:17:22] I don't know, but… They don't recommend it.

[00:17:24] Yeah.

[00:17:24] I don't think I would.

[00:17:26] Yeah. I wouldn't. There's too many very expensive airplanes for as rambunctious as he can get, especially around people you don't know.

[00:17:33] Well, I wouldn't want to leave him in the camper all day.

[00:17:37] That's what I would worry about, is leaving him alone all day when we're not flying and stuff. I don't think he has separation anxiety. He's fine. I can do that. Hank, I can't believe that. That dog's… He gets like… Daniel gets 10 feet away from him when that dog goes nuts.

[00:17:54] Loses his mind. Yeah.

[00:17:55] Even with me. Poor little guy. Anyway, so yeah, I think for me, the fear is leaving the dog alone in the camper or the trailer or whatever.

[00:18:04] Yeah.

[00:18:04] Well, because, we'll be gone all day, to the float line and then to the main line. Then we'll go watch some 3D stuff. Then we'll go back and fly, off the floats and watch the electric stuff. And I mean, it's just, it's not uncommon, I would say, to leave the trailer in the morning and not go back to the trailer until evening.

[00:18:24] Well, especially if we end up eating on site.

[00:18:27] Right.

[00:18:27] Because they have good food there, too.

[00:18:29] Yeah. Yeah, they do.

[00:18:31] So anyway, that would be my fear. Like I said, he's not my only concern. My fish and everything else, my stepdaughter can take care of.

[00:18:39] It's okay. We're not taking it out.

[00:18:44] And the bunnies, they'll be fine. Yeah.

[00:18:47] They're kind of like cats.

[00:18:48] Cats, you can leave them for like weeks.

[00:18:51] They don't care. Put out so much food.

[00:18:53] Dump a bag of food on the floor and leave the toilet lid open. You're good. Yeah.

[00:18:58] That's, I mean, not to that extent, but that's kind of what we did. We went up to AirVenture. We were gone, what, three days or something?

[00:19:03] Something like that, yeah.

[00:19:04] Just, we obviously had to board Zoe.

[00:19:07] Mm-hmm.

[00:19:07] But the cats just stayed here and catted it out, I guess. I don't know. I mean, they were fine.

[00:19:13] They just did what cats do. They did.

[00:19:15] They enjoyed their vacation. Mm-hmm.

[00:19:17] Without you. Yeah.

[00:19:19] I enjoyed ours without them, too.

[00:19:24] But yeah, Joan All. We did Joan All this year and then made several trips to Brian's. You did the jet rally. You went to watch them fly the jets.

[00:19:34] Fun.

[00:19:34] Which was cool.

[00:19:35] Yeah.

[00:19:35] Did you make it, you went to the AeroToe event, too?

[00:19:38] Yeah. That was my first time actually seeing an AeroToe in person.

[00:19:42] Yeah.

[00:19:42] And hopefully next year we will be doing our own with them.

[00:19:47] Yeah. That'll be fun.

[00:19:49] Were those, the AeroTos, were those, what am I thinking of?

[00:19:55] Gliders.

[00:19:56] Gliders. Were they gliders?

[00:19:58] They were, yeah.

[00:19:59] Big ones, then, if they were towing them with bigger airplanes.

[00:20:03] Yep. Yeah.

[00:20:03] How long did they stay up?

[00:20:06] Oh, God, you're going to.

[00:20:08] Yeah. Well, some of them, depending on the weather conditions, can stay up for a full charge on your transmitter.

[00:20:15] Yeah. Yeah. I mean, like, I want to say some of the guys there were getting hour flights.

[00:20:19] Really?

[00:20:19] Yeah. That's crazy. But what's weird, though, is because there were, like, good-sized gliders. Yeah. Like, over 20-foot wingspan and stuff. And they would be up, I want to say there was probably 10 to 12 of them, and they would all be up at once, which was cool. I mean, they were just all floating around having no problem. But the problem was, when they ran out of lift, like, lift would just disappear.

[00:20:42] Everybody lost lift at the same time.

[00:20:44] Everybody lost lift, and they were trying to all get in and not run into each other, because they're gliders.

[00:20:49] They're gliders, yeah.

[00:20:50] So they don't have a way of taking back off. Yeah. So you just see, like, a line of gliders coming and landing, coming and landing, coming and landing, trying to get out of the way.

[00:20:58] Yeah.

[00:20:59] Ron, don't you have a glider that has a motor on it that you could take it back up and then shut it off?

[00:21:04] Smaller ones. So does Tommy.

[00:21:06] Okay. That's what I thought.

[00:21:07] I remember seeing something. Got a couple two-meter, six-foot-wide ones. Mm-hmm.

[00:21:11] Yeah. I look forward to flying that also, by the way.

[00:21:14] I look forward to flying a lot. Yeah. But we'll see.

[00:21:18] We'll see how it goes. Well, hopefully you're not going anywhere. Well, you do have to go one place for a month.

[00:21:23] Yeah, but that's spring. Yeah. So hopefully summertime will be.

[00:21:36] I've been using mine a lot. So the airplane stand is perfect for that, or working on that jet. So that's going to be a very handy.

[00:21:45] It's a good height. Yeah. To work on it. Yeah.

[00:21:48] So fill us in. What did you guys do while we were gone? And I say we, because he was gone, so I really didn't. I only talked to you guys a few times.

[00:21:57] We really didn't do all that much. I mean, like, we're very boring people when it comes to work and not having time for much. we didn't fly a lot.

[00:22:07] Well, you went to AirVenture.

[00:22:08] Yeah. Yeah. That was nice.

[00:22:10] What did you think of that?

[00:22:12] We need to stay longer.

[00:22:14] Done.

[00:22:16] Weekend. The only thing, the only problem I have with the weekend was parking. The first day was fine. We found parking so easily. Second day. Oh my gosh. We were in line just waiting to park for how long? Over an hour.

[00:22:34] It was almost two hours, I think.

[00:22:36] Yeah.

[00:22:36] From the time we hit a line and stopped to the time that we parked.

[00:22:39] Wow. That line was backed up really far. How do you remedy that?

[00:22:44] Get there earlier?

[00:22:45] Yeah. Well, and that's. I think we're planning on getting there earlier in the week this time.

So it continually, like, confused me as to which way we were actually on the runway. Like, what side of the runway we were on. So we ended up on the right-hand side of the runway is where we, and I don't know if it was north or east. I want to say it was east, but I could be wrong.

[00:24:28] But we parked on the right-hand side of the runway. And it's a long runway. It's a mile and a half, whatever it is. And the tri-motor was all the way down on the other side of the runway. So we made our way down after, I don't know, what felt like 17 hours of trekking.

[00:24:46] Only to find out that it was gone. And then, I mean, there was not that much to look at down there. So then we had to turn around and trek all the way back. And it was hot.

[00:46:08] It's pretty close. It's off a couple degrees. Yeah, it's a few degrees. Anyway, the wind is usually from the kind of west to southwest. That's sort of the prevailing wind direction here. But Sunday, when we were out there, it was mostly south. It was almost directly, yeah, south-southeast. So, it was almost directly across wind. I know. And then, so, we have trees behind us. So, there's the pit. And then, when you look at the runway, it's just an open, cultivated cornfield.

[00:46:39] No trees. The trees are behind us. Well, when the wind is coming from behind us, it hits the tops of those trees and then does this weird roll thing as it comes across the runway. So, it tends to get kind of interesting when the wind picks up from the south, any kind of southerly direction. It does weird things to the airplanes. And then, the stronger the wind is, the more effect that has. And so, lightweight airplanes don't do well with south winds.

[00:47:05] Or a narrow track. Or a narrow track.

[00:47:07] But that's only, like, the middle 200 feet, 300 feet, maybe? Just right where we're standing. I mean, like, really. Just right where we need to land. If you land past it or before it, you're usually fine.

[00:47:19] But then you have to hear from the peanut gallery behind you, well, why don't you land it a little closer? You want to take the truck out there to get it?

And I think I've only got enough battery for one attempt at a landing, because I was having so much fun flying it that I wasn't mindful of the battery. And this was before the days, I think, of telemetry. And, we didn't get the feedback. Yeah, we don't know. So, yeah, so we're just guessing.

[00:50:35] So, yeah, I line up, and the crosswind's taking it, and I'm feeding in rudder, and it's going farther over to the edge of the runway, and I'm feeding in more rudder. I was like, oh, yeah, there's no rudder. And it goes over the—it went over our head.

[00:50:48] It got in behind us into the pits and into the parking area.

[00:50:51] Yeah, into the parking area. And then it wasn't going very fast, because I was set up for landing. So it wasn't going very fast.
