Ep 92: Servo problems and a few Listener Questions

[00:00:03] Hello everyone welcome to the rc plane lab podcast i'm ron i'm tom so i have a couple news so once again it is very late and cold outside and apparently cold inside

[00:00:27] Well i'm always wearing a jacket in this place you've got like 40 something degrees in here

[00:00:32] It's cold it's like almost nine o'clock and i know that might not be late for some people well that's like my bedtime well me too usually i'm in bed by no but anyway so we're spending the night together no we're not spending that we're spending this evening yeah punch drunk because we're both tired and so we'll see where this takes us i have no it'll be fine it's going to be one of our bestest okay episodes yeah good news bad news yeah so a couple news articles i came across we're gonna start off with the sad first yeah because then we can work

[00:01:04] Our way up and not start high and work exactly down yes i like it the antonov an-225 is no longer yeah it's very sad it was destroyed in its hangar at the antonov airport and the ukraine ukraine during the russian invasion a couple weeks ago so after i saw that article i kind of was looking at the wikipedia page on it yeah i knew it was big oh yeah but i didn't know how big big was big is pretty big it's huge 290 foot wingspan yeah that's i mean like can you imagine doing a

[00:01:38] 42 version oh my gosh i mean bigger than yeah it would still be as big as like a 737 yeah that's even at 50 i think something like that but yeah it's huge airplane six engines yeah which that's

[00:01:51] For those that don't speak english units that is 89 meters apparently okay it could carry almost 560 000 pounds that's crazy which for our people that don't speak english metric is 254 000 kilograms yeah this is the one i was impressed by fuel 660 000 pounds of fuel just a fuel 300 000 kilograms so i cannot imagine what it cost to fill that up oh my gosh yeah like that's just

[00:02:26] Absolutely nuts and the max takeoff weight almost one thousand or no one million four hundred and eleven thousand pounds i was off by a complete zero set on that so 640 000 kilograms that is huge that is that is that is weighty that's nuts that's a heavy girl i mean and i think there's only a few

[00:02:47] I think there's only a few airports that they could land this thing on because of that number i can imagine because the concrete has to be a certain thickness and all that sort of stuff but

[00:02:56] Yeah and i didn't realize so it's first the the first thing they used it for was transporting the the baran which was the soviet union union space shuttle back in the late 80s yeah i actually saw pictures

[00:03:11] Of it with the with their shuttle on top and yeah what a monster this thing is yeah and that explains the tail because it's got the the kind of the t not a t-tail but it's like a i don't know what would you call it a twin tail kind of a thing neat looking airplane yeah it's yeah it was pretty

[00:03:29] Cool but unfortunately it like i said it's no longer they said they're going to rebuild it it's

[00:03:33] The longest airplane in the world ever like no other airplane was longer i think the i think another airplane had a bigger wingspan i don't remember which one it was well the spruce goose spruce goose

[00:03:46] Had a wider wingspan however this is the the widest wingspan from what i found that actually flew more than once spruce goose really didn't fly fly i mean it did kind of flew in ground effect yeah

[00:04:00] It was more of a hovercraft yeah absolutely huge airplane and it is no more and they said that when

[00:04:07] They rented that out like the the fee to actually have that do work for you was thirty thousand dollars an hour an hour an hour an hour with a crew of six that's amazing yeah that's that's big big big airplane yeah but like i said sad it's hopefully going to get rebuilt we will see what the future

[00:04:27] Brings there's another one that they hadn't finished yeah they had a second one under construction that they gave up because of its size and cost they never finished and it's been apparently from what i read it has been worked on periodically over the years depending on who was interested in completing it but yeah it makes you wonder if it would be cheaper to finish the one that's kind of under construction or rebuild the one that is no longer under construction yeah it depends

[00:04:57] It is under destruction we we will see like i said hopefully that's something in the next few years that they can get back up and that would be a neat plane to see fly oh yeah like when you see the videos of it almost looks like it stopped i know it's so huge yeah oh so now let's move on to something happier this is kind of funny this is hilarious so from an ap article in columbus ohio let me read part of this to you the backward right flyer that was at the center of an embarrassing license flight mistake in ohio last year flew through the approval process with little to no discussion records or show

[00:05:31] The flipped around plane dragging a birthplace of aviation banner from its front rather than its back end appeared to be there from the outset according to the emails and images from the 15-month design process provided to the associated press through a public records request so 35 000

[00:05:53] Plates license plates in ohio were produced with the banner being drugged by the what is essentially the elevator which is on the front of the airplane yeah that's in reverse apparently yeah i'm in

[00:06:06] Reverse so they didn't know which way the airplane flew well to be fair to be found the right flyer

[00:06:13] Is an unusual looking airplane by today's standards okay however well no i i'm okay i know what you're saying but so i can see how somebody who maybe is not into airplanes might make that mistake but for it to go through the complete process and make 35 000 of these things with it backwards and then get

[00:06:36] Delivered to people and somebody goes oh wait that's not right right that's what do you mean that's not right no that's perfect look at that i mean that is i wish i had one of those plates i do too have you seen pictures of them i mean they have not it's pretty impressive i can imagine sad but

[00:06:53] Really it's it's like it's like really obvious is it well if what the airplane is yeah

[00:06:58] Yeah i do because it's on the left hand side of the the top but i mean is it big on the plate or is oh yeah it's it's pretty prominent that it takes up like the the top left not quite quarter

[00:07:09] But oh my god it's so it's not some little thumbnail picture in the corner no it's like no no no

[00:07:14] Because the banner that it's pulling is like the main thing that goes across the top of the license plate or i should say pushing i don't know maybe it's a heart's pushing a banner

[00:09:53] Everything and anything that has to do with this hobby can i read your list just okay so here here's what ron is going to the swab meet to buy hardware screws miscellaneous miscellaneous that's by itself by the way so that could be anything kits are full airplanes motors servos and then dot dot dot anything i can find that's so that's how my mind works well who doesn't go to swap meets to buy

[00:10:18] All of that right well okay so as i was i was working on an airplane down here and i noticed i was starting to get low on servo screws okay and i'm like well i need to get together and and make an order so i can get some of these in because it's so much cheaper to buy them online oh yeah for sure rtl fasteners is who i use yep and i was like -huh i wonder if they're going to be there i could say i'm shipping yeah wouldn't that be there you go so that was like oh hardware well what else i wonder if they'll have like tables of like old servo horns and like new and

[00:10:50] Packaged stuff but like the old stuff that's harder to find now and i started to get more excited about it so my original got bigger my original plan when we talked about going was just to buy airplanes right and then it's like it's spiraled out of control when i started thinking about what might

[00:11:05] Be there oh yeah so it all might be there i mean there's just no way to know i mean yeah so that's

[00:11:12] A pretty comprehensive list you've got there ron it should just be everything i mean well i mean the

[00:11:18] Last four words anything i can find i mean that should be that should pretty much just like it covers everything what are you looking for though do you have me personally so i'm not really going well yeah i guess there's a couple things i'm going to be on the lookout for i really want a pits pipeline like i've wanted one for a while never owned one i have a kit a balsa kit at home but who has time to build a kit these days with everything else with everything else we're doing yeah so i wouldn't mind finding a pits in good condition either a used one or

[00:11:54] One that an rf maybe that i could put together over the course of a week or two so i'll be looking out for something like that 60 to 120 size 60 inch wing or so i might also as we discussed on the last episode i might also be on the lookout for another sato radial if i can find one that i can afford what i don't know anything about pricing on

[00:12:21] Them so like what is a rough range on what you would be talking like the the sato 90 three

[00:12:27] Cylinder you well i mean so i would expect to pay for a used version well for for my engine i would expect to pay at a swap meet i mean i hate to i hate to put it out there because then people will ask that for it but if it's in really really good shape i mean 400 bucks or so or more really depending on the condition sure they still bring good money wow seems like it so if i could find something like that or cheaper would be better obviously because then

[00:12:59] I could buy more stuff but something something in the in the 120 to one set like they made a 170 nitro three cylinder that is just wicked so if i could find one of those at a good a good what i consider a good price for me i'd be on the lookout for something like that what else balsa if somebody's got a stash of balsa there i mean who yeah i don't imagine it'll

[00:13:28] Last long because everybody wants balsa right now yeah see i guess like i'm looking more for things that i can't necessarily buy and easily ship to my house does that make sense yes like fasteners and stuff that's small that doesn't take up a lot of room right in the vehicle coming home but like arson stuff kits and stuff that's awesome because those are harder to ship sure like your yeah saves you a lot of money for sure like your motor you might be able to find that listed somewhere else

[00:13:57] Probably i mean i haven't been on the on the message boards or the classifieds for a while so i haven't really been looking but generally speaking the swab meet they'll be cheaper oh okay so well

[00:14:07] Then maybe it's worth it we'll see like i want to fill your car on the way like by the way i talked to reggie about this he's gonna he can't get off of work to actually go on his own okay but they're gonna apparently i think i'm okay to say this reggie if not sorry whatever i'm telling everybody so he's a truck driver obviously i mean he said that before right they're gonna route him out east oh and that

[00:14:32] Way when he comes back he can stop he will be he will be so we can fill his semi that's what i was

[00:14:38] Gonna say he will be in ohio on friday and i told him well then i can buy whatever i want i have literally a semi that we can fill up yeah because it'll be empty as long as it'll be empty on the bad

[00:14:49] Call well i don't think i'm gonna have enough money to fill a semi but no but if we need because he

[00:14:56] Even said well i'll go buy more straps and tie downs or anything that i have to do to get some some stuff in the trailer so it's safe coming back oh my gosh if we find a bigger airplane

[00:15:05] I'm just saying maybe saying okay well that's between you and reggie i'm no longer limited to

[00:15:10] The size of your car i'm limited to how much money i have that's yeah so yeah that might be fun so what

[00:15:16] Else i mean what else would i i mean if i find something that that was really neat and cool back that they don't make anymore i'd be interested nearly every which is yeah a lot of things but older kits i'm always i have a stash of kits of my own but i'm always if i could find a goldberg ultimate biplane kit that's reasonably priced i'd probably i'd probably snag that too yeah those are great flying airplanes i had one many years ago

[00:15:45] Like the nice thing about going to something like this with you like i see airplanes i'm like oh cool i like the shape of that and i know enough about them to know price-wise what i'm paying what i'm getting into right so that part doesn't scare me i guess i'm not concerned about getting taken advantage of but there are certain things that i don't think without having the the knowledge of the history of the hobby that you do i would not appreciate as much as i should if i say oh i see what you're saying and i think having you around to say oh this is such and such this is why

[00:16:19] It's cool it's a blessing and a curse i'm here to tell you no i i understand but there's just a

[00:16:25] Little bit more knowledge that comes with a lot of the older stuff with you that would make me appreciate seeing some cool things that i might not even consider yeah purchasing but if it's something that's there that right actually would have a little bit of history or some kind of coolness to it it's i don't know it's just it's it's nice having you yeah yeah so around so my list is much

[00:19:42] Done a little bit on that like i said last time i was impatient and started working on it it it's a very fast assembly arf they did a good job of getting it kind of all lined up to where it would go together fast however well before i get to that i was kind of impressed with the motor mount that came with it so it's a wooden motor mount that obviously bolts right onto the firewall but in order to accommodate different size motors like different length of the can and all that

[00:20:17] Kind of stuff it actually slides forward and backwards but then when you get it set to the right distance you actually have to epoxy it in place with tri-stock yeah like okay you say yeah

[00:20:29] Like oh everybody knows that well i didn't know well no no i'm i'm just saying that seems like a seems like a fairly straightforward process well it does but the ones like the couple i've assembled

[00:20:39] Beforehand did not have the adjustability in that it was adjustable based on how far forward or backwards you move the cow you move the cow i got you okay so i thought that was kind of interesting it is different you could use different size motors on it i've seen metal ones before that are adjustable adjustable right but nothing would like that so i thought that was pretty cool that's a

[00:21:01] Pretty good idea it's different i i don't think i've ever well i don't have a lot of electric experience but i don't think i've ever seen one in the build process be adjustable like that that's kind of neat

[00:21:12] Yeah i'll maybe i'll pull a cow off and show you here in a little bit cool i was like i said i thought it was kind of neat the way that went together one thing i don't like though after reading the directions you are supposed to mount your battery to a tray okay and then the tray comes out every time oh so i'm gonna have to find a way around that because i don't want to put a tray in and out and have a battery on there because you actually have to use a screw to hold the tray in

[00:21:40] Yeah i had an airplane like that once i can't remember what it was i don't like it you probably have it now but anyway i've had what was it yeah we had it was actually i think the kristen eagle is that way now that i think about it well i don't have that one i think yeah i think it has a tray but yeah you pull out that has the battery on it and then you swap batteries or whatever and then you slide the tray back in and yeah that has a because it's tabbed at the front it fits under something and then it has a screw at the back a single screw i mean there's no reason yeah i'm

[00:22:14] Not a big fan of that either there's no reason that i couldn't build an actual box in the front that the battery slides into and then a single strap around the back of it with a block to stop it from sliding forward backwards yeah i mean that's so much simpler i think so that's one of the things i'm going to do on there yeah not a good idea not a huge hurry now because i so we talked last time too about the amazon servos that we bought yeah and i was so happy we were excited i mean they were a good deal i ended up ordering 12 more after the four i bought for this because they seemed

[00:22:51] Like they tested fine yeah everything bench tested okay we had no problems with them i put them in the space walker got them all set up and then as i put put the radio in that's when the problems arose yeah so three of the four that i have don't center right yep and i think kind of goes back to what you were talking about with i don't remember what airplane you were talking about last week the yak not centering right i think it's probably about the same thing like that because

[00:23:21] When you turn it on like you can get it to center where it's supposed to center but then if you touch the elevator is where i noticed at first if you push down on it it like fights you which it's supposed to but then it like over corrects up the other direction three eighths of an inch oh my holy cow obviously the longer yeah the farther away you go from the

[00:23:43] Hinge the greater it gets but that's that's not going to work yeah no you can't yeah and so if you

[00:23:49] Flip it back and forth then it will go back to that center spot again where it's supposed to be but once again any little little pressure on it will like if i push down on it it will fight me up and then if you push down or i'm sorry if you push up from the bottom it straightens itself back out so it's not like it stays in that one spot when you're done so yeah that was disappointing i when i figured that out i texted you and said hey have you checked yours yet because you already had some put in your gb right yep yeah so you said you were going to check them a couple days later and then ended up

[00:24:22] Like 10 minutes later you're like i couldn't wait same thing with the ones i have exactly the same problem so i have not pulled mine out yet yeah but i will be oh mine are already on the way back to amazon or oh really oh yeah see i wasn't i've used them so i wasn't sure if i was going to send those

[00:24:37] Back or not oh i packed well so i mounted them and in my gb i had i used three of them so i had one on throttle one on rudder and one on elevator and for the for the ailerons i put those and you're going to hate me for this i put those savux servos that i got from you why would i hate you i mean they're

[00:24:56] Probably good servos and it's not my airplane so you do you want to do but i like the way they

[00:25:01] Center actually because they're rock solid yeah it's thinner by the way the savox servos are the ones that came out of my extra yeah the one that came out of the corner or bean field that i don't

[00:25:12] Trust anymore because of that which is why you said i would hate you yeah i don't hate you

[00:25:16] Well anyway i don't agree with you so i had i had three of the amazon servos in the fuselage and yeah after you texted me and told me about your experience i was like well i have them installed and i i had the push rods installed i just didn't have time to wait for my ix12 to turn on so i could test them so i gave up for the night and figured i'd get back to it well i couldn't wait so i went downstairs and waited the 25 minutes for my ix12 to boot and then once i got everything turned on exact same thing but what i noticed first was it was it wasn't me moving by

[00:25:51] Hand the control surface i watched the servo arm and as i moved the stick through center and back it would not go back to the same spot every time oh okay and then when i'd go the other direction it would stop short the same amount but in the opposite direction as the moving the stick the opposite if that makes sense yeah and then and then i noticed if i just breathe on the stick the servo didn't know what the heck to do it would just it would just it would just like do this weird

[00:26:21] Oscillation thing and then just stop because i because it's guessing because yeah exactly yeah and then after you said with the pressure thing i i checked that and same thing if i pushed on the elevator it would fight me like it's supposed to but then when i let it go it would like go completely wonky past center the opposite direction so one out of the six because i bought the six pack one out of the six actually centered fine wow so five the other five terrible yeah and some and and it didn't seem like there was any consistency which i'm not surprised now but

[00:26:57] No consistency as to how bad each one was like one of them was really bad like it you you could see it without even putting a horn on the output shaft but by looking at the splines you could tell it wasn't going back to the same center every time yeah so see i didn't notice that because i

[00:27:14] Set them up using the servo tester servo tester i didn't actually have it set up to where i was using it or trying to actually work i just put it to center on the servo tester which it sends out that center signal so i wasn't going back and forth when i was setting it up it was just as simple here's here's center fine center okay now i can mount it and do my push rods yeah and it was yeah it was i'm not too thrilled and it was hard for me to tell too because obviously the distance between the hinge and the aileron is different like the outside of the aileron is different than the diff or

[00:27:51] Distance from the hinge to the back of the rudder yeah so obviously the one on the rudder looks a lot worse because it's six times longer right than it is on the aileron but at the same time they both are off so i don't i mean i don't know if any of the servos were worse than each other but there was definitely something wrong with the i don't know if it was a potentiometer inside or what yeah

[00:28:12] That's a definite no-go i suppose i suppose these servos are probably fine for i think mine in the ad it says like for di wires or something like if you're building robots or or stuff like that they're probably fine but for an airplane there's just no way no way i was going to trust

[00:28:34] Those well and so that's the other thing too like what was that they were the mg 996s yeah

[00:28:42] 996 r's that's what mine were labeled yeah and then they had some weird name on them i couldn't

[00:28:47] Read yeah so we had different brands we had different stickers but i'm sure it was made in the same factory so it was not surprising yours yeah yours was diy something i don't remember what mine was and then like i said i ordered 12 more which luckily i figured this out before they shipped yeah so i was able to cancel those and that was a completely different brand which i thought about getting them just to see if they were any different but then it was like i i mean why it's the same servo somebody else just rebranded it with a different sticker probably yeah if i don't i mean

[00:29:22] I i wouldn't trust these yeah because maybe something just would have to take a little jolt to get messed up on the inside of them so i think what i'm going to do is if you sent yours back i'll probably send mine

[00:29:33] Back i did they're on their way now like i we i dropped them off last night oh well well they have those so amazon has a really slick way you can do returns they have these lockers have you have you

[00:29:44] Heard about these things no because i always i always drop mine off at work so oh we have a ups pick

[00:29:49] Oh i got you well so if you do the the amazon locker thing it doesn't cost you anything you don't have to pay for shipping or anything all you have to do is package it and then print the label and stick it on the outside and then the diner place that laura and i really like to eat at the the place right on the way here road ranger right there place they have amazon lockers outside amazon send you a pin really you go to the to the kiosk you type in the pin and a door pops open you slide your stuff

[00:30:19] In there and close the door you're done really yeah it's really slick i've never done that before that's kind of cool yeah and very safe then exactly yeah and it's already got the shipping label on it and stuff they just have to pick it up and now it goes the other way too you can have stuff delivered there right you can that's kind of yeah if you're worried about like porch pirates taking your stuff yeah you can have them shipped to i think you can have them shipped to these lockers and there's several different sizes too like i had the smallest one but they have really big doors there too so yeah pretty cool pretty cool setup anyway yeah mine are on their way back

[00:30:52] That is that is kind of cool yeah so now so what go on oh i was waiting for you to finish oh yeah so i was going to say now i think i'm just going to send those back and i'll probably like i've had a lot of luck with futaba s 3003s yeah or the 3004s i don't know i don't know if it really makes a difference with the ball bearing in them or not

[00:31:15] Do you think the amount three weeks the amount that we fly probably not yeah i mean if it was something we flew a lot like i could see putting a ball bearing servo in like my stick my go-to airplane that i fly all the time but other airplanes that i'm flying once every three years right maybe but yeah yeah so yeah that i won't skimp on receivers and now it looks like i'm not going to skimp on servos yeah except for the little nine gram servos for our micros i'll

[00:31:47] Buy those all day long that's because they they once again they are either dead out of the package

[00:31:53] Or they work fine so and they center fine yeah which is crazy to me because they're so much smaller and you would figure and they're so cheap the electronics are much tinier and size doesn't matter

[00:32:05] I mean first for certain things size doesn't matter i mean you can get potential number that's small enough for that it's got to be engineering and all the other stuff with the bigger servos i think

[00:34:22] Out there oh well so i went through my batteries i had a lot of old ones a lot of ones that should be retired i i had several that i wasn't flying with anymore because they were old but i just hadn't hadn't taken that step of getting rid of them so i finally went through every battery i had and i let's just say decommissioned 34 of them 34 yeah well so like if you decommissioned 34 batteries

[00:34:52] So obviously you did not decommission some batteries right yeah i still have a few well

[00:34:57] What's a few not nearly as many as i got rid of i think i have all right i think i'm down like 16 or so that's a lot of batteries maybe that's yeah it's about 16 that's crazy well but now keep in mind that's also counting like four of the one cell 150 milliamp hour ones for the the little micro ones okay and the 30 that's fair the 30 some i got rid of also includes three i think three of the little one cell ones okay the rest were two cells and three cells and a few four cells but

[00:35:32] Mostly it was three cell batteries those are the ones that scare me yeah mostly it was three cells i got rid of 1300 milliamp hour all the way up to 5000 that just some of them even went back to my car days that i had i had the three s 5000s i ran car the hard packs yep that i actually used to fly too because there's still a good battery i mean it ran fine for the like e-flight advance i always put bigger batteries in some of these and they're supposed to and i don't have problems like cg works out fine you

[00:36:40] Bunch of things on it i have capacity discharge rate number of cells brand weight connector type and for the ones that i could find purchase date yeah that way i know first off how old the batteries are and i know what just by looking like what battery it is for each airplane so when i have the we have our list we talked about and what's your number of all of our airplanes now so i

[00:37:12] Can actually list in there the battery matters yeah the numbers and i guess if i want to do the actual battery itself which i don't i have it under the numbers which numbers work because the difference it's weird certain batteries of different brands with the same capacity way differently yeah so yeah that was that's going to throw off your cg if yeah absolutely a big difference in it no i

[00:49:31] Gas but won't touch nitro that's a good question it is a good question i also would like to know why you're okay with gas and not nitro nitro is expensive and not available in some of the bigger plane or bigger engines for some bigger airplanes nitro is kind of dirty but i mean it does smell good you're referring to the slime yeah when you say dirty all over like yeah it gets all over

[00:50:01] Everything but since gas engines are available all the way down to like some kind of 10 cc but 15 cc and so i i just don't see a a real reason to go with nitro anymore i mean well i mean what do you think

[00:50:22] Well i mean to avoid the the things that you don't like and going to still a gas you're

[00:50:32] Reciprocating engine yeah i think that makes sense well certain times you have to go well i shouldn't say you have to go it gets to a point where the size of the battery that's necessary the size of all that it doesn't quite make it worthwhile to me it's better off just to go with gas yeah so if i have to choose between gas and nitro whereas nitro is 30 bucks a gallon and goes through it really quick as opposed to gasoline that just barely sips it at granted now it's 450 a gallon or five dollars

[00:51:08] Depending on yeah on what grade you get with a little bit of oil added to it that's a no-brainer yeah i mean you use so much less gasoline than you do nitro with the same size displacement yeah that if

[00:51:23] You have no emotional attachment to the to the nostalgia let's say of nitro yeah absolutely that makes perfect sense and no one i won't fault you for it yeah and glow plugs yeah i mean well but honestly though how expensive they are yeah like as long as you don't make dumb mistakes like i did with the with that with the three cylinder and i smoked three of them in two seconds really the blink of an eye yeah once once you've got an engine tuned and running good you don't go through glow

[00:51:58] Plugs very often but they are they are expensive right now yeah and i mean so is nitro fuel then

[00:52:03] You have to go or have a glow plug igniter you keep charged which granted i know that the ignition battery has to be charged but to me that's in a plane you just set up two charger ports hopefully you're charging it out of the plane no i know we've talked about that before no i don't for nimh batteries i don't they're fine in my opinion oh yeah yeah i do too lipos i wouldn't charge enough but anyway so that's kind of my answer as to why i'm okay with gas and it's not that i'm not okay with nitro

[00:58:41] Is there something i don't know that i use them i'm some people don't like them because maybe they're a little stiff it takes a little servo power to to move them and and because of that resistance maybe you don't get as much deflection as as you would like pinned hinges when they're set up properly there's there's almost no resistance so you get all the power of the servo moving the control surface instead of fighting the hinges that could be one reason why he doesn't like them some people don't like them because they do have a they only have so many cycles in

[00:59:15] Them before the plastic fails it's a lot okay yeah something i would probably never ever something i've never i've never met okay but sure you flex something so many times eventually it's gonna snap or fail but that could be one reason why folks don't like them i don't like them in every situation but i'm not opposed to them i i use them i mean our little chipmunks are built with

[00:59:42] Them yeah but i didn't like the ones that came with mine they were delaminated yeah well i think that's probably because they were old well that's not right well actually i don't know the the ones i have are old to begin with it might not be no they might be that old because i i bought a whole bunch of them that came with a kit from somebody at the field well not from them from their estate after they had passed oh yeah and that was 2014 oh that's not old so that's not i mean this if this airplane was

[01:00:14] Built in 12 or 13 it shouldn't be that bad which is weird yeah the hinges in mine were fine yeah

[01:00:21] But mine weren't like i said they you could get like slowly start to put them in and then the whole outside top which is the fabric would come off and that's not good you couldn't get it in so i had to cut and of course they were smaller yeah so i had to cut other bigger ones i had down to make them

[01:00:38] Them but yeah so anyway yeah donnie you can absolutely use pinned hinges just make sure that wherever there is a hinge there's a another piece of backer square stock or whatever behind there for that pin for that hinge ear for lack of a better you mean the part that gets bigger yeah the so that that has a nice yeah some place for it to to get a good glue yeah bond so

[01:01:05] Okay yeah absolutely you can do that very last question are you ready there's no name on this one so okay it says tom do you have a particular method for tuning four strokes when they are mounted inverted in models one of mine seems to be very reliant on an onboard glow system in order to keep

[01:01:22] Running at low speed yeah so the tuning method i use is the same method i use for for no matter how the engine is is mounted but i do have a method for when i'm mounting engines inverted i'm you have to be really really careful about the center line of the fuel tank because the engine is mounted inverted the center line of the engine is still wherever the center line of the engine is but your but your carburetor is now flipped now 180 degrees from being upright so that usually

[01:01:54] Lowers yeah the requirement for your tank so if your tank is sitting above that center line it will siphon into the engine even when it's not running and you can usually see it running out of the carburetor so that's something you need to pay attention to probably it sounds to me like if you're reliant on a glow for idle to keep it running you might want to take a look at the the height of the fuel tank in relation to the carburetor not the center line of the engine but the carburetor

[01:02:22] Very important yeah because i guess i wouldn't have thought about that if you're just right if you're just setting an airplane up that is normally supposed to have it mounted the right way well up i should say there is a whole bunch of other things that comes with going upside down yeah yeah

[01:02:38] Yeah when you when you flip the engine upside down now the carburetor is also 180 so it's chances are it's much lower than it would be if it was mounted upright so does that make it any harder to suck the fuel up into the carburetor well usually four strokes that makes it easier because the four stroke most four strokes are updraft when they're mounted upright so they're actually harder to get fuel in when they're mounted upright like initially but it's much easier to hydro lock an upright or i'm sorry an inverted mounted four stroke because now the carburetor

[01:03:12] It's basically gravity feeding right into the cylinder right onto that exhaust valve or intake valve

[01:03:17] Golly it's late it's okay yeah so hydro lock is bad though oh hydro lock is yeah that's gonna make

[01:03:23] Your engine like it's flooding it's it's flooding to the extreme right so just make sure where

[01:03:29] There's no nowhere for the air to compress it's completely liquid yes and so you're gonna you're

[01:03:34] Gonna mess up your connecting rod or or something exactly so so pay pay really close attention to the to the level of the fuel tank make sure that center line of the fuel tank is roughly equal to the center line actually wherever the fuel inlet is to the carburetor that's where you want that center line to line up or on an inverted engine maybe even the tank just a little bit lower so the engine has to work a little bit harder to suck fuel and what's happening the reason he needs onboard glows because the engine is basically flooding at idle it's siphoning fuel and it can't keep up the

[01:04:07] Glow plug can't stay lit because it keeps getting cooled off with all this cold fuel in there and so

[01:04:12] It can't suck the fuel through fast enough to keep it from getting flooded is that or am i not it's getting too much fuel right but that goes away at high engine speed yeah yeah because you're you're

[01:04:24] Burning it pulling more through pulling more air through okay in relation to the fuel yeah cool yeah so there you go anything else it's been a long night no no that's that's all i have i'm really excited about toledo did i mention that well we're going to toledo does our hotel at least have i hope to see some like i hope i really am like hopeful that i see at least one listener there that would to me that would be a success that would make well to me a
